FEATURE

TEACHING YOUR KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF

Giving

Story Jenna Gallina

The greatest gifts are the ones that you give. But, most children don’t seem to see it this way. Teaching your child about social awareness and giving back will help them grow to be empathetic, compassionate and caring. Research from the Greater Good Science Centre tells us that gratitude actually blocks toxic emotions and allows us to celebrate the present. What’s more, grateful people are more stress-resistant and have a higher sense of self-worth.

The importance of giving is a tough lesson for parents to teach and a tough lesson for children to learn. Here are a few activities that may help: READ ALL ABOUT IT

PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL DONATION DRIVES

One of my kid’s favourites is the Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmes. Another cute one is The Poky Little Puppy’s First Christmas. After you read the story, talk about what has happened and what the main message is.

It’s so much easier to simply buy the raffle tickets or the chocolate bars your children are selling for their school fundraiser. But don’t do it. Instead, walk around the street with them and help them practice their sales speech. This not only harnesses the importance of giving but also boosts their confidence.

WRITE LETTERS Spend some time writing and delivering letters to those in the community who would appreciate a hand-written card. VOLUNTEER Participate in the working bees at the school, get involved in a community project or visit those who are less fortunate. DONATE TOYS AND CLOTHING Ask your children to choose what items to give to Vinnies or another charity. It can be difficult for them to part with certain items but this is such a big step to teaching them the importance of giving. ADOPT A PET If you are looking into getting a pet, go to the RSPCA or a similar shelter. If you are not ready for a pet, then ask to see if there are any opportunities to volunteer with the kids.

8

NOVEMBER 2015 www.pakmag.com.au

PLANT TREES IN A COMMUNITY GARDEN Trees are an important part of the ecosystem, and planting one makes a difference in your community for years to come. Make a point of planting trees with your kids and explaining the integral role those trees play in the ecosystem. GET THEM INVOLVED IN HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTION For younger children, start them on the path to kindness by asking them to pass out cake, cookies and other sweets when guests are over. Teaching them to give the guests their plate first is a simple tactic used to explain the concept of sharing and giving. MAKE GIFT GIVING LISTS Rather than focus on letters to Santa, ask your children to write three lists – one list of items they would like to receive, one list of items they would like to give to family members and one list of items they would like to give to those less fortunate.

START A KINDNESS CHART

BAKE YOUR APPRECIATION

Track your children’s kindness by getting them to record one act of kindness they do once a day. This could be setting the table, letting their little sister choose the television program or helping to feed the pet.

Spend the afternoon baking biscuits with the kids. Rather than eat them up (or freeze them for school snacks), put them in small jars or wrap them in cellophane and give them to neighbours, teachers and others that deserve to be thanked.

ENCOURAGE SHARING & LISTENING AT THE DINNER TABLE Make it a habit of sitting down as a family and everyone sharing a story, a joke, the best and worst part of their day, or anything they want to discuss. Take turns going around the table and stress the importance of listening to each other. CREATE A GRATITUDE SCRAPBOOK Give your children your camera or smart phone and ask them to take photos of the various things they are grateful for around the house. Print out the photos and paste them into a scrapbook. USE STICKY NOTES Leave sticky notes for each family member to thank them for something you appreciate. MAKE A GRATITUDE VIDEO If you have little performers in the house, then they probably already love the camera. Make a thankyou video for someone who has showed kindness or done something nice for your children.

KEEP THE END GOAL IN MIND If the phrase “I want one!” is a common one in your household, then know that you are not alone. Children’s worlds are naturally all about them and it takes time for children to understand that other people matter too. It can be so frustrating (and slightly embarrassing) trying to teach a child about empathy and kindness but be patient. Try to see it from your child’s perspective - it can be extremely difficult to understand the feelings that often come with watching someone else receive a gift – anger, jealousy, sadness, frustration. Try not to be too hard on your children if they get upset. Little steps around the house will encourage kindness and help them understand just how important giving and gratitude is for a healthy, happy life.

EDUCATION

Tips

FOR MASTERING

MATHS STORY Rebecca Harris, Catholic Education Cairns

Maths is everywhere. We use it every day, even if we don’t realise it. Mathematics helps us to understand and describe our world, solve everyday problems, make predictions, develop our abstract reasoning and make better decisions. But, for many kids, a love of maths doesn’t come naturally. Or easily. Helping your child learn to love maths starts at home. Here is what you can do: Promote a sense of relevance and interest in mathematics. Make connections between math and everyday life which encourages them to want to use maths. Taking part in everyday activities like going to the shops, cooking, or even setting the table can help your child with maths. Getting dressed and learning to take turns when playing a game all help your child to understand patterns and shapes, measuring and sorting. Bring maths into your daily reading routine. Reading to children is a treasured activity. What better way to integrate mathematics into the lives of children than to read them stories that bring mathematical ideas to life? Children’s books related to mathematics can be separated into four categories: counting books, number books, storybooks and concept books. Some good ones to consider are Alfie’s Number by Shirley Hughes, One, Two Buckle My Shoe by Melissa Everett, Sorting Through by Spring-Lizann Flatt and What’s a Fraction by Nancy Kelly Allen. Connect play time with maths. There are plenty of board games and card games that can help encourage maths but you can also incorporate math lessons in other ways as well. Play ‘shop’ and count out money. Play ‘builder’ and measure various items around the house. Children need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. Make connections for your child by explaining how numbers and counting are a part of everyday life.

Think outside the traditional maths lessons. You may feel that the maths your child is doing at school is different from how you were taught, but you will still be able to support your child in many ways and encourage your child with other ways to solve maths problems. Giving your child more than one way to solve a problem is highly beneficial to their learning. After all, there is always more than one way to get the right answer. Encourage them to problem solve. Problem solving is about engaging with real problems - guessing, discovering, and making sense of mathematics. It is about developing young mathematicians who have an 'understanding of the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject'. You can help them build their problem solving skills without them even realising it. Encourage them to ask questions, to analyse the information they have been given and to look at the various ways to solve the problem. Focus on their individual journey. Like reading and writing, maths is something that we are constantly learning and consistently using. Maths today is about understanding number patterns, not learning by repetition. Avoid comparing your own maths skills with that of your child’s. Saying things like "I was bad as maths too" is one of the worst things you can do as it lowers their own expectations of themselves.

Understanding

ORTHODONTIC CARE

STORY Dr Rhonda Coyne We all know how important it is to regularly see a dentist, not only for adults but for children as well. However, many children will also require an orthodontist to help straighten their teeth and ensure proper jaw alignment.

An orthodontist is a specialist who has undertaken

additional education and training in straightening teeth and choosing the best treatment option specifically for you, or your child.

A general dentist receives broad training across all fields of dentistry; however they are not a specialist in moving teeth. Dentists are often the first to recognise you may have an orthodontic problem.

As part of your dental team, a specialist orthodontist has the ability to align your teeth to help create beautiful smiles – but it is not just about straight teeth. Orthodontists are the most qualified specialists to plan, create and retain your new smile. Too often patients are led to believe that achieving straight front teeth is what orthodontic treatment is all about. Not only can orthodontists create an improved smile but one that is harmonious and balanced with an individual's profile. Although moving teeth seems like a simple process, it is not. Make sure you entrust your/your child's teeth, bite and smile to the most qualified person – a trained and registered specialist orthodontist.

Who can be an orthodontist? Orthodontists are dentists who have done an additional full time degree at an accredited university to become registered specialists in orthodontics.

Orthodontists in Australia must: • Complete an AHPRA registered general dental degree. • Have the equivalent of at least two years clinical experience as a dentist. • Complete an accredited three year full-time university degree in orthodontics. • Be registered as a specialist orthodontist. Each patient will respond differently to treatment and without adequate training it is impossible to expect to be able to treat patients safely and end up with results a patient will be happy with.

How can I find an orthodontist? Go to the Australian Society of Orthodontist web page and follow the prompts to find an AHPRA registered orthodontist in your area. You do not need a referral to visit an orthodontist. You can find and contact an orthodontist yourself – Simply phone and book an appointment directly! If you have confidence in your family dentist, they may also recommend you visit a particular orthodontist. By working together, an orthodontist-dentist partnership can achieve results for patients that cannot be produced when working independently. All ASO specialists have trained and worked as dentists and are members of the Australian Dental Association.

IS YOUR CHILD READY

For School?

CPL Is Offering Free Screening Clinics To Get Your Little Learner Ready For School Can you believe it’s almost time for your baby to start school?! Tissues and first day photos aside, CPL understands what a big milestone this is and can help make sure your little learner is ready for school and completely prepared for the exciting year ahead. They are offering FREE screening clinics in November and December for children aged 4 and 5 to test for school readiness skills, plus more (and again free!) screening clinics for kids who have just finished Grade 3 who need some skill development that might have become apparent after their first Naplan test.

CPL offers competitive rates for therapy services to the general public including physiotherapy, speech pathology and occupational therapy

What is school readiness? While learning is an important aspect to be ready for, so is the readiness to play and socialise with a range of children. Important to ‘school readiness’ are things like taking part in activities on a daily basis (such as colouring in, dressing, eating, going on an outing) to ensure your child develops skills that will help them learn when they start school. It’s so important that your child’s teacher is aware of any areas that need extra attention so you can work together to expand those skills in the classroom! Addressing problems How do you know if your child needs help with school readiness? Your child early leads to better could benefit from CPL’s free screening clinic if they have difficulty with: outcomes. CPL is offering screening • Writing and holding a pencil • Speech and expressing • Posture and coordination in sports clinics to ensure their feelings • Hand eye coordination • Physical endurance and strength your child is starting their learning life • Late talking • Dressing • Low self esteem with confidence. Not • Play skills • Picky and fussy eating • Behaviour addressing problems now could leave your child struggling to keep up with the school curriculum because their foundation skills for learning aren’t in place. Children can easily become stressed and anxious if they realise they’re not on the same level as their classmates and may face social isolation as a result. With a call to CPL Cairns, you can make sure your child is on track to shine at school! CPL’s trained therapists will also be running a range of school holiday clinics in January to focus on building school readiness skills (children will need to be screened at CPL’s free clinics before they enter the program.) For more information about the free screening clinic, you can contact CPL directly on 4041 4544 to make an appointment. For more information about CPL’s children’s therapy services, visit their website at www.cpl.org.au/cairns. CPL Cairns is located at 1/111 Spence Street, Cairns.

YOU CAN

RECYCLING Story Jenna Gallena Seeing is believing and often the best way for children to learn the ins and outs of recycling is by seeing it in action. And this is what the Council’s recently upgraded Re-Discovery Centre, located in the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Portsmith, is all about. Uncover the mystery behind what happens to those old juice bottles, the empty margarine containers and the pizza boxes at the council upgraded waste and recycling education complex. The facility provides a visually stunning adventure for kids and adults with creative and colourful murals, a floor baled of aluminium cans and a couch designed with recycled materials. This is upcycling at its best and it’s in our very own backyard. There are tours available for educational facilities including primary, high schools TAFE and universities and there are plenty of hands-on activities for the kids. Families are encouraged to talk to their school to arrange a tour. Find out more about the Re-Discovery Centre and book a tour for your school by calling 4044 3044.

THE ROAD TO

RIGHT Recycling is not only good for our environment, but also for the economy. It can create jobs, protect wildlife, reduce waste and pollution, conserve energy and reduce landfill. Recycling isn’t as complex as you may think and most Australian families only recycle a small fraction of what they are supposed to. A part of it may come down to not actually knowing what can be recycled, what should be binned and what needs to go to the transfer station system.

YELLOW BIN The yellow bin is for recyclable items including: • Aluminium and steel food cans (rinsed out) and takeaway containers • Aerosol, hairspray and insect spray tins • Chocolate and biscuit tins • Glass and plastic bottles (Drink cans, poppers and juice bottles, water bottles, alcohol bottles, jars, sauce bottles etc) • Shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, detergent and cleaning product bottles • Egg cartons, margarine, butter and yoghurt tubs • Buckets and pot plants • CD jacket covers • Motor oil containers • Wrapping paper, newspapers, magazines, phone books and junk mail • Pizza boxes and cardboard

TRANSFER STATION

GREEN BIN

Hazardous items are reserved for the transfer station. These should not be placed in your bins at home. These should be taken to the transfer station for sorting. This includes:

Your green lid bin is for general waste items including:

• Electrical appliances

• Bottle lids

• Flammable paint tins, acrylic paint and spray paint cans

• Clingwrap, plastic wrap and bubble wrap

• Green garden waste, herbicides, fertiliser and pesticides

• Disposable coffee cups

• Old books, bric-a-brac and toys (in decent condition) • Solvent and motor oil • Compact Flouro Lightbulbs • Household, car and mobile phone batteries

• Aluminium foil • Clothing and fabrics • Waxed cardboard

• Polystyrene and Styrofoam • Plastic bags and dirty nappies • Broken glasses, windows, mirrors and crockery • Household food scraps • Garden hose

• Oil filters, oily water and emulsions • Mobile phones • Car tyres • Medical waste

Paper plates, plastic cups and cutlery leftover from your children’s party? Shred them, and put them underneath your mulch, around the base of your plants and flowers. Paper plates break down after several weeks, and help retain moisture and provide nutrients for your plants.

JUNK MAIL INK CARTRIDGES

BATTERIES

In Australia, about 350 million batteries are purchased every year. Over two thirds of batteries disposed are sent to landfill, making them the most common form of hazardous waste. Batteries go to the transfer station, not in the bin!

PARTY ITEMS

HOW TO DISPOSE OF Australians throw away more than 18 million printer cartridges every year which amounts to over 5,000 tonnes of material. There are a number of stores that take ink cartridges including Harvey Norman, Office Works, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Garricks Camera House and Australia Post outlets. Over 5.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard was used in one year, with only 2.5 million tonnes of this recycled. Turns out, you can recycle all junk mail, phone books and even the envelopes in your yellow bin. www.pakmag.com.au NOVEMBER 2015

+ BRUSHING TEETH TIPS Did you know that a child requires assistance with teeth brushing until the age of 7? My five-year-old and threeyear-old would beg to differ. However, tooth decay is a very serious and very common problem across Australia.

+ Be Skin Care Aware

Nearly half of all six-year-olds experience decay in their baby teeth, according to a recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report. And an alarming 57 per cent of Australians are expected to develop tooth decay.

The heat is on, the sun is out and it’s time to slip, slop, slap, especially with National Skin Cancer Awareness Week taking place 15th November to 21st November.

IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME BRUSHING YOUR CHILD’S TEETH, HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO TRY:

With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, all parents need to not only protect themselves from the sun, but their little ones as well. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said sunburn was a sign that skin had been significantly damaged. “In Queensland, even on cooler and cloudier winter days when temperatures are lower, sunburn can still occur in as little as 15 minutes,” Ms Clift said. “Young Queenslanders need to be more vigilant about staying SunSmart whenever they spend time outdoors – at the beach, the footy, by the pool and at backyard BBQs around this time of year. BEING SUN SAFE TAKES FIVE STEPS

• Experiment with various flavours of toothpaste. Having a different flavour to choose each day can keep the routine interesting. • Have a timer set up so they know how long to brush for. • Try brushing their teeth on the bed. Having them lay down can make it easier to reach those back teeth. • Sing a song while brushing their teeth. When the song ends, the job is done. • Take turns – have your child brush your teeth, then you brush his teeth. Then, swap and have him brush his own teeth and you brush your own teeth. TEPE INTERDENTAL BRUSHES RRP $8.95 AVAILABLE www.oralcare4u.com.au

SLIP on protective clothing SLOP on SPF 30 or above broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen SLAP on a broad-brimmed hat SEEK shade SLIDE on wrap-around sunnies. Sun protection is required when the UV Index is three and above, which is all year round in Queensland.

EASY CUBES are Causing Quite the Stir

Sometimes a product comes into the market and you can’t help but think, “Why didn’t I think of that?” This is exactly the case with Adfresh Farms Pty Ltd Easy Cubes, an innovative new product created by local farmers Sebastian and Cyrene Torrisi from Mareeba. Adfresh Farms Easy Cubes make household cooking fun and easy. Using specially designed processing equipment the Torrisi’s have created fresh herbs, spices and other cooking condiments into small mess-free, ready to use, frozen pop out cube portions. Simply pop them into any cooking, marinades, dips, pastas, salad dressings and more. Adfresh Farms Easy Cubes come in garlic, basil, chilli and coriander with plans to expand the range in the future. “Since the launch of Easy Cubes in late 2014, we have had so much positive feedback from the local community. We have also had many travellers and campers say they have been using the Easy Cubes, when they head out on their adventures.” Perhaps the best thing about these innovative little cubes is that they are

grown in our own backyard, on a family-owned fruit and veggie farm 60km outside of Cairns in Mareeba. “It all began when Cyrene struggled to find Australian garlic in the supermarkets. So we decided to grow our own garlic.” Sebastian tells Pakmag. “Faced with over supply of fresh garlic, we pureed the garlic, froze it into cubes and placed the cubes into zip lock bags which we stored in the freezer. Any time Cyrene needed garlic she would simply pop a frozen cube into her cooking. It was so easy!” And from there, the idea for Easy Cubes was born. “We are able to process the fresh herbs within two hours from harvest, maintaining the highest quality and freshness.”

This allows us to produce “a 100 per cent natural

product packed with flavour which will lock in the fresh flavour for up to two years in your freezer.” Easy Cubes are sold in Coles Supermarkets across Cairns and the Tablelands, Cairns Bulk Meats, Jonssons Farm Market, Pease Street Discount Drug store, Atherton Supa IGA, and now Piccones Supa IGA Edmonton and Manoora. If you’re constantly throwing out herbs after they go off, are tired of spending a fortune on spices and are sick of your kids complaining about your cooking being “boring” (I know I’m not the only one.) then Easy Cubes hold the answer. Once you try them you will see just how easy it is to add flavour, freshness and fun into your cooking.

HEALTHIER PREGNANCY So, you’re pregnant? Congratulations! Being pregnant is one of the most special times in your life. You are also probably finding yourself thinking more and more about your health and the health of your unborn child. With the abundance of information available these days, it can be confusing. Firstly, you need to understand what being “healthy” is. Most people think that when you feel ok and can get through your day without feeling unwell, you are healthy. True health is actually determined by your body’s ability to adapt successfully to the stresses of life. Being pregnant puts your body under a great deal of stress, so it is important to support your body and your unborn child with healthy lifestyle choices. These are my top five tips for a healthier pregnancy. 1. HAVE YOUR SPINE ASSESSED Seeing a chiropractor while you are pregnant (and planning to be) is my number one tip for a healthier pregnancy. Chiropractors concentrate on your spine so your nervous system is working the best it can, leading to your whole body working optimally. Women tend to accept that the discomfort and pain you feel while pregnant is just something you have to put up with. This is not true. Through chiropractic care, the body is able to better adapt to the stresses of pregnancy, allowing you to feel more comfortable. Also, when your pelvis is in alignment, there will be more room for your body to move and grow. 2. DECREASE STRESS Emotional stress negatively impacts on your health whether you are pregnant or not. When you are stressed there is a cascade of hormonal changes that occur which changes the environment of your body. When you are in a stressed state, your body is not concentrating on growth and healing – which is exactly what you want your body to focus on when you are pregnant. To bring your body out of a stressed state, five deep breaths concentrating on pushing your tummy out or just five minutes of meditation a day are simple and effective ways to bring your body back into a state supportive of growth and healing. 3. STAY ACTIVE While you are pregnant, it is important you continue to exercise regularly. Even though your body is changing, and you may not be able to do as much as you are used to doing, you must remember that you do need to have a notable level of fitness for birthing your baby and then recovering afterwards. Choose exercises that will not affect your centre of gravity such as walking, swimming or riding a stationary bike. Yoga is also a great option as it allows you to both stretch and strengthen your joints and muscles. 4. EAT SEASONAL, LOCAL, ORGANIC AND WHOLE FOODS As you are probably aware by now, the food you put in your mouth directly affects your health. What supplements you choose to take is very specific to your needs and should be discussed with your personal health care practitioner. Generally speaking, to eat SLOW (Seasonal, Local, Organic and Whole) is the way to go. You want to make sure you are fuelling your body to cope with the stress and changes of pregnancy, and you also want to make sure that the fuel your baby is using to grow is as best as you can provide. 5. REST AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Rest is vital for a healthy pregnancy. It is important to rest as much as you feel you need to right from day one, don’t wait until you have a big belly to justify the rest you crave. Every time you allow yourself to rest by sitting or lying down, you are increasing the amount of blood flowing to your baby, giving it the nutrients it needs. You will probably find yourself most comfortable lying on your side with pillows supporting you from the back and front.

Master of Motocross STORY Jenna Gallina Most nine year olds are happy to spend their weekends at home playing with mates, attending birthday parties and helping Mum and Dad with the chores. But for Cairns motocross rider, Braden Plath, weekends are often spent racing his 50cc or 65cc KTM at speeds up to 65 kilometres an hour and flying over 20 metre jumps. And, for Braden and the entire Plath family, they wouldn’t have it any other way. Braden joined the Cairns Motorcycle Club three years ago when he was six years old after watching the Crusty Demons. Since then he has taken home a number of titles including 2nd in the National Junior MX Titles in 2014, 1st in the TNQ Titles in 2014, 1st in the Queensland State Titles in 2015 and 1st in the TNQ Titles in 2015. Recently Braden and his family, including mum Lea, dad Damian and

brothers Matthew, 11 and Riley, 6, travelled to Bunbury, WA for Braden to compete in the Australian Titles where our local superstar placed 4th. In addition to competing in motocross events across the state and even the country six months of the year, Braden also enjoys wakeboarding and playing FUTSAL. Braden’s brothers also participate in sport and Lea and Damian own a local business as well. For the Plath family, being busy is the norm. The family often spend the weekends on the road travelling to Mareeba, Tully, Ravenshoe and beyond for races. “It is very family orientated,” Lea explains. “We spend weekends camping for events and at the end for the race, we sit back and relax with the other families.” Braden receives assistance from a number of local companies including Ray White Real Estate, Parramatta Service Centre and Wayne Leonards Motorcycles. There is a lot of safety gear including clothes, boots, neck braces, knee braces, helmets, goggles and gloves. Braden rides both a 50cc and 65cc KTM and usually trains at least once or twice a week during the race season. So what drives Braden’s passion for motocross? “You get to go really fast!” he tells PakMag excitedly. And while he has

taken a few spills, the sport definitely comes with excitement and its share of ups and downs. The young daredevil reaches intense speeds of 65 kilometres an hour on his bike. Yes, it may take a village of support in terms of mechanics, logistics and equipment, but it’s all too clear from watching Braden’s eyes light up when he talks about motocross, that it is more than worth it. “I would highly recommend it,” Lea adds. “It may not just be a sport; it’s a lifestyle. But it’s a fun one at that.” For anyone with children interested in motocross, the Cairns Motorcycle Club is your first stop. It has been in operation for over 10 years and the club hosts races throughout the year at its Edmonton track as well as other locations in the Far North area. You can find our more through the Cairns MX Club Facebook Page or email cairnsmx@gmail.com.

BUDGETING

pakmag

SIMPLE WAYS (JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS) Wouldn’t it be great if you had an extra few hundred dollars given to you for the holiday season? Take money matters into your own hands with these simple ways to save and make money.

AROUND THE HOUSE

1. Start a loose change jar - At

the end of each week, everyone in the household dumps their loose change from their wallets, pockets and purses into the jar. Make this your “fun jar.”

2. Start a weekly saving box -

We did this last year and it worked wonderfully – for each week of the year, add that amount in dollars to their savings box. For example, week one, add one dollar, week 30, add 30 dollars and week 52, add 52 dollars. In one year, you will have a grand total of $1729!

3. Get visual – Keep track of

your spending with spreadsheets, planners, vision boards or anything else that works for you.

4. Divvy up the money – For

some families, using envelopes and divvying up the funds to keep track of each expense can help ensure you do not go over each month.

5. Use the 30-day rule – Avoid IN THE KITCHEN

Story Jenna Gallina impulse buys by sticking to the 30-day spending rule. If you see something you love, give it a month. If you still need it one month later, then buy it. More likely than not, the impulse to buy the item will be gone by the end of the month.

you spend money on something indulgent, from a new pair of shoes to a coffee, add the same amount to a savings jar.

7. Be energy efficient – Turn

lights off, reduce your shower times and reuse your bath water *Check out www.pakmag.com.au for more energy efficient tips.

shopping isn’t for everyone but you can find some amazing deals on clothing, toys and other household items.

11. Make your own cleaning 12. Swap babysitting with

neighbours – Babysitters are a killer when it comes to your budget. Start a neighbourhood babysitting system where you rotate with the other parents on your street.

8. Start your own garden – This

will cut down on the costs of some of your fruits and veggies.

9. Declutter – This helps you find

items that you thought you have lost and ensures you are not buying items you don’t need.

13. Stay away from takeaway –

It’s hard, I know... but reducing your weekly reliance on takeaway can save you $200 or more per month!

14. Freezer cook – Meal planning and freezer cooking is one of the easiest ways to save money on groceries and takeaway as well as save time in the kitchen.

15. Ditch one luxury each month

– Swap your monthly hair appointments to every second month. Spread out your weekly spray tan to once every month.

16. Go Meat-free on Mondays – Plan a weekly meal that doesn’t

involve meat. We spend about $10

on meat per family meal so swapping for more affordable veggies, lentils or beans can help.

17. Make lunches in advance – Pack all lunches the night before in case you wake up late. This avoids visits to the local café, pie van and tuck shop for the kids.

Thanks to Everything Fab www.everythingfab.com

B U B B L E B AT H Nothing says ‘Merry Christmas, have a relaxing day’ quite like bubble bath. And making your own gives it such a beautiful, personal touch. You can make your own bubble bath with unscented dish soap, liquid glycerine, water and essential oil. Add the ingredients into a mason jar, tie a ribbon around it and you’ve got another relaxing homemade gift to add to the gift giving pile. Thanks to Blog 25. blog.freepeople.com

B R E A D I N A JA R This is such a cute and clever gift idea! Simply layer the dry ingredients, stir in the wet ingredients and place the bread dough into a milk jar. All that is left is to take the ingredients out of the jar and bake it! Thanks to Sunset. www.sunset.com

One of the ways you are doing this is through the Community Blitz program. Can you explain a little more about this program? Community Blitz is a program run by our church that reaches out to the needs of our local community. On Saturday 28 November, we will be holding our Community Blitz at the Cairns Base Hospital in the children’s ward where we will be adding colour, brightness and hope to the ward by doing murals on the walls with some fun activities for the kids. How can people in the community get involved? We need a professional painter who can donate their time on that Saturday. We need finances for a coffee machine, a TV, decal wall stickers, a face painter, anyone who can do children’s acts including balloons, juggling etc. Any other donation of books or toys for the children’s ward are appreciated and will be passed on. If you would like to donate or get involved please email Nicole and Michael on nicole@citychurchcairns. com.au.

Bali

BLISS STORY Bree James They call it the island of the gods, and for good reason. There is no other place quite like it. There is a special vibe, an authentic essence that touches and inspires visitors from all over the world. The flight is only around 4.5 hours, and with non-stop Jetstar flights to Bali (Denpasar) from Cairns, there's no reason not to go. Bali would have to be one of the closest, most affordable destinations outside of Australia. If you love shopping for clothes, jewellery, unique wooden and artistic items, listening to live music, and indulging in yummy food and drinks, massages, pedicures and manicures all at amazing prices, then Bali is definitely a place you should visit. As soon as you hop off the plane and get through customs the tone of the holiday begins. You have people wanting to carry your bags, offer you transport and book you on tours.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS

Do not drink anything with Arak as an ingredient.

Hire a Nanny. The kids loved doing the crafts with our nanny and were well looked after. It is a minimum five hours, and prices are approx $5 per hour. We used Bali Nannies Bali http://balinanniesbali.blogspot.com

Getting in and out of the country. Be prepared to pay US $35 per person (inc children) for when you arrive at the customs desk. You only need to fill in one customs entry form per family. To exit the country the departure tax has now been abolished. Have your passport in a safe place ready at all times as there are four security checks.

Take your washing to one of the many laundries to get washed, pressed and folded for about $2 per kilo of washing. Spend smart. Book your tours as you go. This saves money if you are not up for it on the day. Shopping options include The Krisna shops is the cheapest place to buy traditional Balinese items and souvenirs. The Matahari is great for the Myer experience of Bali. There are also many quality designer clothes shops. These shops do not allow bartering so save your bartering skills for the markets where you should be able to get the locals down to one third of their original price. Knowing a little bit of Bahasa (Indonesian) will often get you a better price. To avoid Bali belly and getting ill, do not use the tap water to clean your teeth or to drink. Most hotels supply complementary bottled water. Eat cooked foods as much as possible.

Injecting COLOUR into Your Lounge Room Your lounge room is probably one of the most-used areas in the house. It should be a place where you can feel comfortable and unwind after a long day. Pastels are one of the hottest trends this season, but whatever colour scheme and dÊcor you choose, here are some tips to ensure the perfect blend of comfort and style with minimal clutter. Consider the 60-30-10 Rule When decorating a particular room, try to stick to 60 per cent of a dominant colour, 30 per cent of a secondary colour and 10 per cent of an accent colour. Often your accent colour comes from the accessories that you choose. Accessorise with things like lamps, throws, rugs, pillows, candles, wall hangings, and indoor plant holders. A few bright pillows can add a splash of colour and freshness to any living space. Know the Colour Schemes Essentially there are two main types of colour schemes: complementary and analogous. Complementary colours are across from each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange and are typically reserved for formal living areas. Analogous colour schemes are next to each other on the colour wheel, such as yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange and are best for casual family rooms and dens. Understand Colour Codes We may not even notice but certain colours are associated with particular emotions, seasons and feelings. Blues and browns tend to be associated with a more restful feel while reds and yellows are associated with a lively living space. Colours are often also associated with the season – autumn colours such as mustard yellows, russets and browns will create a calm and subdued space, perfect for resting. Spring colours, on the other hand, are more uplifting; pinks, lilac and saffron yellow create an innocent, fresh look to a room.

WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME to Say Goodbye STORY Jane Quinn

We are never quite prepared for the death of a pet. Whether swift and unexpected or after a slow decline, we aren’t fully aware of what a pet has brought to our lives until our beloved companion is gone. Everyone wishes for a pets peaceful passing, hoping to find them in their favourite spot in the morning. Unfortunately this often isn’t the case, and the impact of a pets passing is significantly increased when, as responsible and loving caretakers, we decide to have our pet euthanised. Requesting euthanasia of a pet is probably the most difficult decision a pet owner can make. You don’t want to prolong their suffering, but at the same time you don’t want to put them to sleep when they are still enjoying life.

Making the toughest call Euthanasia is the greatest gift that you can give an animal to mercifully end suffering. Your veterinarian can assist and support you throughout the decision making process, however ultimately the final decision should be based on not only what is best for your pet , but also what is best for you and your family. TO HELP GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER.

1. 2.

Is my pet still eating well? Being hungry and eating with gusto are signs of vitality. Is your pet drinking and maintaining hydration? Reduced water intake or dehydration in spite of drinking plenty is a sign of illness.

3. Is my pet still interested and responsive to things around him (family, toys etc)? 4. Does my pet seem tired and withdrawn most of the time? 5. Is my pet in pain? 6. Can my pet get up without assistance? Go to the toilet outside? 7. Is my pet still interested in exercise, participating in his/her favourite past time? 8. Do they have an incurable illness? 9. How does my pet’s health impact on my family's well being? 10. Do I have the financial and physical resources it may take to adequately care for him/her as his/her condition declines? 11. What do I think he/she would want at this point? What would I want if I were in her/his position? 12. Will the quality of life through the treatment and beyond be good enough for the time it afforded? Am I prolonging his/her life for my pet or for me?

13.

Does my pet have more bad days than good?

There is no right answer when it comes to making end of life decisions; only what makes sense for you and your family. Take your time, don’t rush your decision and remember that giving your beloved pet the gift of a peaceful rest is the last best thing you can do for your best friend.
