Hello and welcome to PakMag’s Guide To Schools. As parents, we know that choosing the right school for your child is not an easy task. So many things need to be considered. Will the school teach my child more than academics? Is the school in a location that suits my family? Does the school cater for special needs? How much are the fees? These are some of the many things families want to know at a glance. That’s why we’ve created our school guide - to take out the guesswork, to bypass the research and to save you time. We’ve compiled a full directory of all the schools in Far North Queensland so you can see all the options available to you. Plus we dig deeper with almost thirty primary and secondary schools to showcase what they have on offer and give you more insight. We are hoping to gain more support in our next year’s edition and feature more public schools, so stay tuned for edition two! If you have any feedback on how we can make this guide better for edition two, please email admin@m2f.com.au We hope this guide helps you on your journey to find a school, and wish you all the best with your decision making. Good luck and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PakMag.

S OF THE FAR NORTH T H E
The Far North is home to many components that make up a true paradise. From lush rainforests to pristine beaches and abundant wildlife, life north of Cairns often involves spending the weekends swimming in natural water holes, exploring the ancient rainforest or BBQing on the beach with the family. North of Port Douglas you’ll find a few cosy towns nestled amongst untouched nature such as Weipa, Cape York and Mossman. Each have something that makes them special, plus amazing warm, sunny weather nearly all-year round and a gorgeous chunk of the great outdoors to explore. This region is a natural playground for outdoorsy families who love to spend their weekends 4WD-ing, camping or fishing. It’s the perfect place to raise a family.

OOLS OF CAIRNS CITY AND THE BEACHES
The perfect balance of being close to Cairns and the beaches! Located 10 to 20 minutes’ drive north of the Cairns city centre, each of the beaches has its own unique attractions including walking trails, watersports, restaurants and great fishing spots. The neighbourhoods have a quiet village feel and offer a range of residential options. If you’d prefer to live closer to the city, there’s various neighbourhoods with equal benefits. You’re closer to shopping centres, restaurants, medical specialists, and cinemas but still just a short drive away from Cairns’ fantastic beaches. Another excellent option for families is Redlynch Valley and its surrounding areas which are close to both the beaches and the city. With an array of walking tracks, parks and swimming holes, families can spend their weekends exploring the surrounding mountains and creeks.

HOOLS OF SOUTHERN CAIRNS
South of Cairns you’ll find endless sugar cane fields, huge mountain ranges and an array of forests and swimming holes to explore. On weekends, you’ll find locals hiking the appropriately-named Walsh’s Pyramid, enjoying a delicious meal at a local cafe or taking a dip at the picturesque Behana Gorge. The south has plenty to offer families whilst boasting a gorgeous location. You’ll find many hidden treasures from refreshing swimming spots to stunning views overlooking the whole region. Nearby, there’s a number of shopping centres, sports clubs and cosy restaurants to discover. While the area has everything you could ask for to live comfortably, Cairns city centre is only a 20-30 minute drive away.

ONDARY & BOARDING SCHOOLS
Discover a world of opportunity at the secondary and boarding schools in North Queensland. The secondary schools in the region offer a variety of classes, courses, and learning opportunities for students, from woodworking to business and animal studies. Excursions are a must, and many students have the opportunity to visit the reef, go camping, or even travel overseas through their school’s programs. While there are many secondary schools in FNQ, there are not as many as primary schools - because of this, some students may have trouble enrolling in their school of choice, which is why some have weekly or full-time boarding options to help those that need to commute. Boarders have access to a number of facilities and are kept busy with a range of fun activities during their free time.

Holy Spirit College is a Year 7 to 12 co-educational Catholic youth assistance college offering a second chance for young people who have found mainstream schooling unsuitable. They have two campuses - the main one is in Cooktown with boarding and day facilities, while the Manoora campus is a day schooling only facility. Both facilities provide an alternative to mainstream education and aim to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged young Australians, especially those from low socio-economic backgrounds. The school values a Christian way of living that promotes a commitment to building relationships, respect and responsibilities through care, service and respect for justice and compassion. Holy Spirit operates under guiding principles that underpin and permeate all aspects of the life of the College. As a Catholic school within the Diocese of Cairns and under the administration of the Cairns Catholic Education, Holy Spirit College offers quality learning and teaching, educational experiences that embrace ‘living life to the full’ and an environment that is safe, welcoming and inclusive. The principles inform how members of the College community interact with each other to cultivate and maintain positive and meaningful working relationships. The school focuses on education for disengaged young people which guides their spiritual, social, emotional, academic, and physical development through an engaging and individualised curriculum.
GENERAL
Holy Spirit College offers an alternative style of learning. The College’s vision is to engage every young person in reaching their potential as confident, successful people ready to contribute to society as informed, responsible and productive citizens.
