SPORTY PARENTS Kids love physical activity. They love to be outside and they love to move. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyles and trying to fit so many things into our day can sometimes mean we neglect finding time to play.
Chances are, even if you enjoyed exercise and fitness prior to having children, some of that dedication may have taken a backseat when they came along. In the nitty gritty of everyday life and parenthood, it’s inevitable that you may have less time to spend on yourself. In turn this usually means a flow on effect on your own wellbeing and fitness. It doesn’t need to be that way though. With obesity levels at all-time highs in Australia for both adults and even more concerning, children, making the time to be active with your kids can be so rewarding. Not only will it get you moving, but it can be a fantastic bonding experience. Participating in sporting activities as a family can improve confidence (for kids and for parents alike), body image, coordination and even have repercussions in the classroom! Physical activity, no matter the source, is known to have a range of other benefits ranging from: • Improved cardiovascular fitness • Assists to achieve and maintain a healthy weight • Improves posture • Better sleep • Boosts self-esteem and confidence • Improves concentration • Helps relaxation • Builds strong bones and muscles • Improves balance and skills • Maintains and develops flexibility • Provides opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills Children on average need around 60 minutes of physical activity every day, but it doesn’t have to all be at once. It all adds up! The important thing to remember is that daily exercise doesn’t have to be time consuming or considered a chore to be beneficial. Adding exercise in as part of your day allows you to spend time with your children as well as reap the benefits of physical activity. A walk around the block after dinner, a game of tag, running around the playground, or perhaps taking part in a more structured activity like swimming, mums and bubs classes or dance is more your style. Whatever you choose, you will never regret the time you spend with your children and making the decision to get moving!

Ready Steady Go Kids www.readysteadygokids.com.au
How and why did you get involved in the sport? I got involved in the sport as a three year old, I just loved riding my bike, that’s all I did so my parents took me to the track one Friday night to watch the racing and I had my first race the very next week (this was back in 1984). Both my kids race and it’s a fun and rewarding family sport. We’ve found that you make friends for life in BMX. What is an average day like for you? If not at work, it’s BMX in some form, whether that be coaching, maintaining the track or bikes, travelling to races, racing or just socialising with other BMX families. What age group(s) do you work with / which is your favourite? I coach all age groups from Mini Wheelers (two to four years), Sprockets (five to seven years) and the open age groups (eight years and up) including the mums and dads that race as well. I enjoy helping them all. Do you have a funny or interesting story/memory you’d like to share? Something that happens often is the Sprockets having conversations on the track while racing each other, it can be very entertaining, The Mini Wheelers tend to make motorbike noises or stop in the middle of the track and wave to their parents. In your opinion, why is it important for parents and guardians to get involved in fitness and sporting activities with their children? It’s important to teach kids about the benefits of being healthy and active, Parents partaking in sport with their children helps them physically, emotionally and socially. Taking part in sporting activities with their parents also creates memories for life and promotes good relationships, friendships and general wellbeing.

FEATURE STORY
How and why did you get involved in the sport? I have two very active boys who love to be outside running around. I was always looking for activities for my boys to have fun at and burn off a little energy. We visited my friend in Townsville whose boy attended Ready Steady Go Kids and I realised that Ready Steady Go Kids is exactly what my boys needed. What is an average day like for you? I run Ready Steady Go Kids classes up until lunch time, in the afternoon I either take my eldest boy to basketball training or swimming lessons or we stay home and play football, cricket, basketball or ride bikes, then I have basketball training or a game at night. What age group(s) do you work with / which is your favourite? I work with children aged two and a half to seven years. Every age group is great to work with for different reasons. With the younger children it is rewarding to watch them develop their gross-motor skills and listening skills while becoming more independent. The older children’s gross motor skills are more developed so a greater emphasis is placed on the sport of the week and we can implement their skills into fun locomotor activities and modified games. Do you have a funny or interesting story/memory you’d like to share? Children are great entertainment! Each lesson we are told many stories and as children are unpredictable we never know what they are going to tell us. In your opinion, why is it important for parents and guardians to get involved in fitness and sporting activities with their children? Participating in fitness and sporting activities keeps the body and mind active. Ready Steady Go Kids provides opportunity for the children to be active and while they are completing the activities they are developing listening, cooperation, confidence, concentration, taking turns as well as colours, counting and social skills. Children watch and copy their parents as they look up to them as role models. If they see their parents being active its likely they will enjoy being active as well.

General health We only have one body which can get neglected with the business of raising a family. It is important to look after your health starting with yearly tests! General health checks: See your doctor for an annual check-up with tests like; blood pressure, a blood test, pap smear, bone density test, breast screening, heart test and diabetes to name a few. Talk to your GP about your own personal health priorities and also check your vaccinations are up to date. Skin checks: Do your own monthly head to toe skin check. A regular skin check from a qualified skin doctor is also recommended every six to 12 months, depending on your skin. Advanced Mole Clinicin Mackay conduct skin checks (Medicare cover part-payment). Call them to make an appointment. Dental checks: Most dentists recommend a check-up and clean twice a year. Eye checks: There are lots of places that conduct a wide range of health and vision tests. If you wear glasses or are aged over thirty you should get your eyes checked yearly. Under 30 year olds every two years.
Wealth Invest in yourself - do courses, read books, learn about finance, get a financial health check, check your insurances and come up with a plan for what you want to earn, spend and save for 2015. Some local businesses that can help:

Happiness Happiness can be the simple things in life, but it’s often what we give and experience in life that makes us happy - join a book club, visit a new place, learn a new language or travel somewhere new. Have a positive impact others: Being useful and valued for what you do helps build self-esteem. Practice self-discipline: Selfcontrol naturally leads to a sense of hopefulness and can help you overcome despair, helplessness and other negative thoughts. Enjoy the beauty of nature or art: Studies show simply walking through a garden can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. The same goes for strolling through a park, an art gallery, hiking, admiring architecture or sitting on a beach. Appeal to your senses: Stay calm and energised by appealing to the five senses - sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Lift your mood with music, place flowers where you’ll see and smell them, massage your hands and feet or sip a warm drink. www.pakmag.com.au JANUARY 2015

PARENTING
pakmag
PREparing for prep story Jenna Mottin
For some parents the new year ahead marks the beginning of their child’s journey into formal education. While Prep is not compulsory in Queensland, enrolment rates are as high as 98%. With the change in the Australian Curriculum parents and teachers have seen Prep evolve from a flexible play-based style of teaching to more formal curriculum focused program. Parents of children who have gone through the current Prep program have reported that Prep has become what grade one used to be which can understandably leave some parents apprehensive and asking: ‘Is my child prepared for Prep?’
Y
our child’s readiness for schooling is something only you can be the judge of, however the tasks listed below are a good baseline indication of preparedness:
Some of these tasks include: • tying shoelaces • putting on their own sunscreen • carrying their school bags into the classroom and putting lunches and drink bottles into designated areas • saying good morning to adults • asking for help • asking to go to the toilet Other things that we assume our children know however they most likely do not, is taking turns to speak and waiting their turn instead of interrupting. You know the scenario: you and your friend are trying to have a conversation about something of high importance but you find yourself constantly interrupted by your little loved ones. Sound familiar? Well, imagine how hard it must be for the teacher to be trying to discuss things with the class only to be interrupted by numerous little ones who haven’t yet learned the social skill of waiting their turns. So how can you help instil this ready for Prep? Play board games or easy card games like “fish” or “snap” in which the children must learn to wait for their turn. Verbally praise them for “good waiting!” In conversation explain that they must wait their turn, just like when they are playing their games, and, similarly, praise them when they do remember to wait their turn. Their teachers will LOVE you for it!
What about their speech? Dr Peter Flipsen Jr, an American Speech Pathologist stated that by four years of age your child’s speech should be completely intelligible to strangers. This can be tricky for parents because often they are tuned-in to their own child and can understand everything that he or she says. If you are unsure about their speech, be aware of adults reactions when your child speaks – do they turn to you to ask for clarification? That may be an indicator that their speech is delayed. If you are in doubt or have any concerns about your child’s speech and sound development, see a speech pathologist for an assessment. Research shows that children’s oral language skills are strongly linked to academic success, especially reading abilities. More specifically, research by Scarborough in 2001 found that preschool children with strong understanding of word meanings tended to have better listening comprehension, word recognition and reading comprehension in the later primary years. This makes sense because to do well at school you need to have good listening, attention and vocabulary so you can understand what the teacher is saying to you and students need to be able to speak in well-formed sentences before they are able to write well-formed sentences. Apart from the close relationship between oral language and reading, Given almost all classroom-based learning depends on oral language, helping children develop mastery in this area is important for their overall academic success.
Skills children are expected to have by age 5: Play and Social Skills • Can communicate with a variety of people and makes friends easily. • Engages in complex imaginary games with simple rules. • Knows how to join in and start conversations and interactions appropriately.
Listening and Understanding • Follows 3 step instructions eg: “get your pencils, put them in the tidy tray and then line up near the door”. • Follows instructions that include the words ‘first’, ‘last’, ‘before’ and ‘after’ • Understands humour and age appropriate jokes.
Speaking • Has an extensive vocabulary and can express ideas clearly. • Can speak clearly with any unfamiliar listener with very few minor speech immaturities remaining e.g. says thumb as “fum”. • Tells stories or gives a morning talk without any help. • Has a long and detailed conversation with a variety of people on a variety of topics. • Can explain why something happened and consider some solutions to problems.

Two bosses makes life hard for kids story Dr Craig Murison
If you have ever been in a work situation where more than one person believed they could give you direct instructions then you know how stressful and difficult that can be. Unless the two supervisors have established very clear guidelines for expectations and priorities you can very quickly feel that it doesn't matter what you do, it will never be right or good enough.
I
t is the same for children when Mum and Dad have different expectations and standards. No matter how hard a child tries to get it right it can seem as if it is never going to happen. In some situations children just give up trying. Why try to be "good" when the definition of what "good" looks like can change at a moment's notice? It is made a lot more difficult for many children when they spend time in two different households as a result of a relationship break down between their parents. These children can find themselves having to try to reach four different sets of expectations. Of course, it can be made much harder for the two sets of parents as well when both households have different
expectations. Children pick up on the tension between Mum and Dad, or different households, very quickly and may choose to take advantage of the tensions and play one off against the other. I can't stress enough how very important it is for there to be clarity of, and similarity of, expectations and standards between the significant others in a child's life. It should be easier in a home where Mum and Dad are together. Whenever it becomes apparent there may be differences private conversations can quickly bring alignment. When children know Mum and Dad either agree on expectations and possible consequences for misbehaviour
they feel far more secure than they otherwise would. It is much harder where the relationship has broken down, and even harder where animosity exists between the separated couple. Please remember that the children are innocent in these circumstances. For the children’s sakes it is worth the effort to work to keep disagreements to a minimum and to discuss them in private – not in front of the children. Consistent and clear expectations communicated by both parents, backed up by consistent and clear consequences communicated and followed through on, by both parents, just make life more pleasant in a home.

HEALTH

Being a Model Positive Parent Dr John McIntosh Mackay GP Superclinic Everyone knows that our children learn by example and copy the habits of the parents. What sort of model are you for your children? Do you do what you say and say what you do? Do you deal with life challenges with a calm smoothness that shows you are in control and able to cope?
HEALTH JANUARY
Children learn lessons much more effectively by watching what you do, so any conflict in the messages will be learnt from your actions. So if you eat lots of fast foods with high fat and sugars, don’t exercise and smoke, however much you say to the kids not to do it, they will! Our desires as parents is to have our children grow up into happy, healthy, independent and successful adults – and LEAVE HOME! Creating a positive family environment is fundamental to this. Mutual respect and decency is upheld for all and the family approaches life from the perspective of wonder and joy, unlimited possibility and love. How do you achieve this? The recently published book, Mastering Negative Impulsive Thoughts by Dr John and Elizabeth McIntosh, has all the answers! The skills to recognise negative impulsive thoughts (NITs) is shown with the “3 Magic Questions” and then a three step process to change these NITs into positive thoughts is explained. What a great analogy with head lice being irritating, hard to recognise, hard to treat and spread like an epidemic – just like NITs! Most exciting is that in the chapter on “The Next Generation” there are fantastic techniques for handling the obstreperous child and teenager. By changing your reaction to the situation, you maintain control of yourself and also teach the child by example a really effective way of managing heated situations. The keys are to focus on the problem, not make any personal attacks and maintain a class act – no shouting, agitation or loss of self-control. This is every parent’s essential read. Available in paperback from the Mackay Superclinics and Amazon.com (US only) and the ebook is on Amazon Kindle. Following interviews across the US and many 5 star reviews, this book will change your thinking forever! Be ready to be amazed, have “a-ha” moments and you will have a new awareness of your thinking and of those around you….
Time to make a change STORY Narelle Muller It’s time we, as parents, took a stand on healthy living, so we can be there for our kids in the future. As a fitness trainer, I constantly hear parents who are often quite overweight, telling me how much they would love to get fitter and healthier but, yes you guessed it, they simply don’t have time. But what good will you be to your children when you suffer from debilitating illness and injury due to your decades of sedentary lifestyle? Do you want them to have to take care of you when you need your knee/hip replacement, or have to fetch you your diabetes medication? Will you feel sad when you’re unable to chase a ball with your future grandchildren? Bring a bit of balance into this crazy, busy stressful life we all lead. Give your kids the best of everything and leave a bit of time every week to attend an exercise class yourself or hire a personal trainer. They will thank you in the long run.
De Quervain Tenosynovitis (or Mummy’s Wrist!) STORY Claire Stewart One thing I found most surprising as a new mother was how physically demanding it was. Tiny babies don’t look heavy when someone else is carrying them! DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis is a condition which causes pain around the base of the thumb and wrist. It is so common in new mothers (including myself!) that it is sometimes referred to as “Mummy’s Wrist”. The pain of De Quervain’s is caused by inflammation and swelling of the tendons due to repetitive movements such as grasping and lifting an infant. Your GP can diagnose this condition by examining your wrist. No special investigations or tests are usually required. Treatment primarily involves resting the wrist which is obviously very difficult when you have a baby to look after! In this case, wearing a special splint or wrist brace helps prevent you from moving your thumb in certain ways so that the sore tendons can be rested. If the pain continues despite this, you may need an injection of steroid around the tendon to settle down the inflammation.

Preparing for Pregnancy If you’ve decided that 2015 will be the year to add to your household, there’s no better time than now to start making some changes to ensure your health and wellbeing is at a premium and you’re prepped and ready for pregnancy. Health checks Book a check-up with your GP. Unless you’ve had one in the past year, it’s a good idea to have a pap smear. Your GP may also wish to do a breast check and make sure your vaccinations are up to date. While most of us usually dread it, it’s also a good idea to see your dentist as any pre-existing oral health problems can be exacerbated during pregnancy.
Healthy Eating & Exercise It goes without saying that now is the time to start taking note of what you put into your body. Getting in some light daily exercise is a great idea, as it is thought to assist with managing morning sickness not to mention promoting wellbeing. When planning for pregnancy, it is best to avoid alcohol as research suggests there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when pregnant - therefore it is best to abstain altogether. If you are a smoker, seek help to quit as smoking is linked to increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature labour, and sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), which includes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Prior to conception is also a great time to consider taking a prenatal vitamin including folate - which is proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Investigate Options For Pregnancy Care In Queensland, there are four main options for where to have a baby: in a public hospital or public birth centre (usually attached to a hospital), in a private hospital, or out of hospital (home birth). The ‘Having a Baby in Queensland’ website (www.havingababy.org. au) is a great reference and details the factors which may influence where you choose to have your baby. These include: • where you receive your pregnancy care (at home, in a hospital, in a community clinic) • whether you have to travel for birth, and how far • who provides your care during pregnancy and during labour and birth (midwives or an obstetrician) • what choices you have in how to birth your baby (water for pain management, water birth etc) • whether 'low intervention' birth is supported • whether you have close access to certain procedures or services • whether your support people are able to stay with you • whether there are out-of-pocket costs for your care (and if Private Insurance covers this if applicable) • whether you have in-home care after birth
Cost of Antenatal Care If you have Private Health cover, get in touch and find out what and how much is covered under your policy. There are a number of options when it comes to antenatal care, including private hospitals and obstetricians, public hospitals and birth centres. If you choose to give birth in a private hospital under the care of an obstetrician, it is likely you will have some out of pocket costs not
BUMP &BUB completely covered by your private health insurance. It is useful to get information regarding this before making a choice on where you give birth.
Cost of Children While you’re examining the effect giving birth may have on your hip pocket, it’s worth getting a jump start and think about the implications pregnancy and children will have long-term. If your company has a HR manual, ascertain whether your company has a maternity or parental leave policy, any Centrelink benefits you may be entitled to (such as the Paid Parental Leave scheme) and although it may seem a long way off getting to know the child care options in your area and planning ahead will put you ahead in the long run.
Chart Your Cycle Now that you’re ready to start trying, charting your cycle can assist in determining the ideal time to get down to business. Charting has gone hightech, with apps such as iPeriod (yes, really!) available to keep track for you.
Support networks When planning to start or add to your family, one of the most important options to consider is the support network you have around you. Although it is true that many families these days live far away from family and make do, it is definitely much harder. The old saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ rings true, so having friends and family close by will be a boon when your little one arrives. Remember, a newborn will bring with them opportunities to meet other like-minded mums (and dads) too so becoming a parent may open up a whole new avenue of potential friendships!

TRAVEL

Surviving in the air at 30,000 Feet I remember having the most blissful flight with my daughter who was on her first long-haul flight from Europe to Australia at seven months of age, only to return four weeks later with a completely different infant who was awake and ready to party! Need I say it was a very long flight! At the end of the day getting organised for a short or long haul flights will vary as well as the age of the children you are travelling with. What works on one flight may not work on the next so remember to stay calm and collected and be willing to try different options. Here are some general tips for flying with your little passengers. Infants • Breastfeed or feed your infant on take-off and descent, which will help relieve air pressure or pack a dummy/pacifier. • Request a bassinet. Make sure your infant meets the aircraft carrier’s guidelines. You may also be required to take your sleeping infant out of the bassinet during turbulence so be prepared for that situation. • Use an Ergo carrier or a similar product which will enable you to be hands free when boarding. • Take some small infant food or food pouches, which your little one knows and likes. Most airlines do cater for infant food but may not be age appropriate or not to your infant’s liking. • Take a muslin with you which can be used to block out the cabin lights. • Make sure you have easy access on-board to nappies and wipes, organise yourself a starter pack that you can place in your seat pocket. • Try and sleep when your infant sleeps if traveling overnight. • Note that Baby food and milk is exempt from the 100ml liquid guidelines for international flights.
Toddler • Check which children and adult meals are being served on your flight to find the most suitable.
• Pack their own cup to prevent drink spills, this will reduce the need to change clothes.
Other
• Pack snacks as little tummies are always hungry.
• Pack empty plastic bags or Ziploc bags for waste or wet clothes, as soon as you have anything that needs to be tossed you can put it away.
• Pack a magnetic drawing board or magnetic puzzle instead of Lego and normal puzzles which can easily be lost.
Children • Ignore any household rules you have about TVs and computer usage during the flight. • Pack the iPad, add new Apps prior to leaving home, chargers or USB cords which can be connected on most flights. • Pack kids headphones and maybe even a splitter so you can use two headphones for the one iPad. • Pack a few small inexpensive toys that you won’t mind losing. • Pack a lollypop or two to help with their ears or keep them happy. • Pack a game like UNO or stickers. • Try and have them seated next to the window to keep them entertained, also makes for a good cushion rest if you are flying economy.
• Keep everyone well hydrated.
• Make sure you have some spare clothes and a jumper to deal with cabin temperatures. • Choose a family friendly airline wherever possible. • Ask the airline if you can be seated next to an empty seat. • Minimize your carry-on luggage as much as you can. • Have your toddler or child wearing their PJs before boarding the plane for long overnight flights. • Take a pair of plane friendly socks. Bronwyn Darnoc is the publisher of the Simply for Flying personal flight logbook and Flight Travel Kit. See www.simplyforflying.com for further details.
• Try and keep them to drinking water and keep sugared drinks to a minimum or best not at all unless you are after a lively one.
• Wrap some toys/treats individually, which they can unwrap each hour during the flight, a fun activity to keep them entertained and rewarded. • Make a flight pack entertainment which they enjoy on-board.

TROPICAL POOLS There is probably no greater advantage to living in North Queensland than the ability to swim year round! T
he humble swimming pool has come a long way and there is more choice than ever for families looking to create their own backyard oasis. A well-designed pool can enhance the appearance of your property, add value to your home and enrich your life. With options limited only by your imagination, space and budget, here is a run-down of the choices available.
and are chemically neutral - meaning you need fewer chemicals to balance water and keep it clear and healthy. The main limitation of fibreglass is the variety of sizes and shapes that are available and depth limitations.
Chlorine, Salt Water or an Enviro option?
Concrete swimming pool construction is by far the most widely used method of construction in North Queensland, with a wide variety of shapes, depths and features. The versatility of concrete means it can be used to create a pool in even challenging environments - this can include creating suspended or infinity edge pools which have infinite wow factor! While typically concrete swimming pool construction can take longer, it is considered to be the best method for most backyards as the benefits of functionality and design overshadow the longer building time.
Chlorine in tablet or liquid form has been the traditional choice to keep pools clean. In recent years, Salt-water pools have grown in popularity. Saltwater pools still contain chlorine, as they create their chlorine from the salt in the pool by using a device called a chlorine generator. This means pool owners avoid handling and storing chlorine products themselves. For those families wishing to avoid chemicals entirely, there are new systems coming onto the market all the time like the Mineral Pool - which is thought to have therapeutic and health benefits, the EcoSplash which is a natural water purification system developed especially for Tropical pools and Bioniser systems - which replace saltwater systems and use natural mineral ions to purify pool water.
Fibreglass
Pool Shapes and Sizes
Fibreglass pools offer the convenience of no-fuss installation with a high-class end product. Your pool arrives ready to install, with prior site preparation meaning the pool can be completed in only one to two weeks (weather permitting!) Fibreglass pools look good, are easy to clean, are strong and durable, have a smooth surface which parents of small children can prefer
If working with concrete, the size and shape of the pool you choose is dependent only on your budget and imagination. Concrete pools can even be integrated with the design of your home so they look like they are meant to be there and become a part of the design, rather than an ‘add-on’. If considering fibreglass, the variety of shapes and depths available is

growing all the time with the very popular lap-pool and kidney shape pools leading the way. Ultimately, if you are working with a quality pool designer or architect, the sky's the limit as to what you can achieve.
Pool Safety and Legislation All pools in Queensland must be registered on the State Government’s Pool Safety Register and must be fenced and maintained in accordance with the Queensland Development Code. While owning a pool is a luxury, it should be remembered it also comes with a responsibility to ensure the safety of your own family and anyone else who may use it or have access to your home. USE ANY T & SE CLOCKS S TIME
DIY IDEAS
It’s Time To Go January: the shops are filled with ‘back to school’ reminders and Christmas already seems a distant memory. The drop off rush and school lunches loom on the horizon. STORY Sofie Buchholz
WAKE UP
Getting out the door on time to school, work or day care can be a daily battle. No matter how early you may rise or how short a distance you may have to travel, the exasperated yell of ‘get in the car, we are going to be late’ seems almost inevitable … or it is in my house at least! My current time scale for judging whether or not we are going to get out the door on time is down to when we finish breakfast and when the television is then allowed to be put on, while I get ready. It is at this time that ‘Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom on ABC4Kids starts, and I know I have about seven minutes to finish getting ready and be out the door before we run late. This way of judging time management was working brilliantly, until ABC changed their program line up! A better system of time management for all was needed!
BLACK RD CARDBOA
GET READY
Taking inspiration from world time zone clocks, usually featured within corporate environments, consider creating a timeline of simple tasks to keep all family members on track for getting out the door in the morning on time. Create a series of clocks with set times for key tasks, rather than changing times for different cities, along with one clock with the actual time, to keep everyone on track. Not only does such a display look visually stylish, it helps to teach younger children how to read and understand analogue time. Start by sourcing some clear faced clocks. Look for clocks with numbers rather than symbols or Roman numerals to make it easier for children to read the time correctly. Inexpensive clocks aren’t always the most on trend with design but the clock frame could be spray painted to remove the plastic look. Consider copper or gold spray paint to fit with the current metallic trend!

Inexpensive task labels under the clock can be made on the computer, then mounted on card or in a picture frame to create a visually uniform look. Again, use clear and simple text so that it is easy for children to read. If you have larger DIY budget, consider sourcing wooden letters which can be painted and mounted on timber and placed under each of the clocks.
