SLING Safety Following a recent inquest where a baby sling was found to be a factor in a three-week old baby’s death, authorities are developing a campaign to educate parents about how to use baby slings safely. The key tips are: • Keep your baby’s face uncovered (especially the nose and mouth) • Avoid your baby being curled in a ‘C’ position with their chin against their chest • Be extra careful about using slings with premature or low weight babies, or those with a cold • Reposition your baby after breastfeeding to make sure their airways are clear • Check on them regularly

Really knowing your

Child

Research shows that temperament is innate and the key to effective parenting is understanding the particular character traits your child is born with. Without this knowledge parenting and discipline are largely just ‘hit and miss’.

Understanding your child’s, and your own temperament, occurs usually over time and with increasing self-awareness and insight. Slowly, as your child develops, you work out if they are like either parent or another family member, or their own little soul. The lucky ones are like one or both parents because then you instinctively understand your child’s ‘manual’.

Designer Pinboards: While pin boards used to be restricted to bland notice boards, cork boards and fabric boards, two Sydney designers have set up a new business offering a more inspiring and stylish alternative. As well as being durable, they are also “self healing” meaning that the board closes over once a pin is removed. Visit www.designerpinboards.com.au

Splurge on Kids Style: If you’re not keen on bright plastic Dora or Thomas furniture in your home and want something a little more aesthetically pleasing, then check out this gorgeous coffee table and stool set from www.gatherkids.com.au. It has been designed to integrate into modern family furnishings.

While living in regional Australia has many advantages, one thing we don’t have is IKEA home of stylish, affordable furniture and homeware products. However, an entrepreneurial mum in Townsville is on a mission to bring IKEA products to NQ families who want more choice. You can now order IKEA products to be picked up at their Townsville depot or if you happen to be visiting Townsville you can get it delivered to your home for an extra fee. Pane Prevention

Some things just don’t mix and kids and glass are one of them. So, if you’re concerned about exuberant kids running through windows or glass doors, you can reduce the risk with safety window film. It can be applied to any glass surface, acting as a membrane that holds the broken glass together if an accident occurs. So instead of sharp shards flying out from a breakage the film holds the shattered pieces securely in place. It is already a requirement for pre-schools and schools. Painted Glass Jars diyhome

By Sofie Buchholz

Painted glass jars are popular in DIY styling. They can be useful for highlighting an accent colour and are great in a small space. Pops of colour are continuing to come through within home décor ranges. One way to create a more sophisticated finish that preserves the shine of the glass is to paint a jar, vintage crystal or glass vase by painting the inside surface. We coloured these vases to pick up the green in the lampshade and highlight the colours of the wall art. To Make: • Recycle interesting food jars or search second hand shops for vintage glass and crystal ware. • Select a viscous paint that can be poured and run around the inside of the vase. House paint has a suitable viscosity. Acrylic paint is a more economical option but would need to be painted onto the inside of the vase, which can leave streaks and appear uneven. • Pour a small amount of paint into the bottom of your glass vase. A medicine syringe can help squirt paint into the bottom of vases with small openings. • Tip the vase around until the paint has covered the inside surface of the vase. • Pour out the excess paint and wipe off any paint drips on the outside of the glass vase. • Allow the vase to partly dry upside down – an old dish rack is useful to help drain out excess paint. • Allow the vase to fully dry in an upright position, making any touch ups within the jar if necessary.
