The Thing Is... STORY Bree James
This month it’s Mother’s Day, the one day of year when Mum is showered with extra love from her children and a day off doing mum duties. Treated like a queen, ready for a day of relaxation, peace and quiet reflection on how awesome she is.
The thing is, I actually think this is one of the funniest days of the year for most mothers. Whether you are a single mum, or you have a partner, in my experience, this day turns into a “I either have to laugh or I will cry” day. The morning often starts lovely, with hugs and sloppy kisses, breakfast cooked in bed, delivered with a knee to the vagina by one of your overly zealous children. You’re then watched like a hawk by your children as you eat yummy, cold breakfast whilst they wait for the “MMMMM this is DELICIOUS!” Then the kids start to get upset because they want to eat breakfast in bed too. Then someone touches someone’s foot and all hell breaks loose, your breakfast or tea gets spilt everywhere, so you then have to eat breakfast at the dinner table. Then it’s present time! Your gifts are nearly dropped as they are brought to you. You watch in fear that it’s something glass, and that their little hearts are going to be broken into a million pieces, like the gift, if they drop it. Phew, it makes it to you and you open it, “Oh yay!” I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but sometimes you get a nice thoughtful gift, sometimes it is just dumb crap, like a generic beauty pack that your partner grabbed at 5pm the day before because they couldn’t think of anything else, so it sits in the bathroom cupboard with last years one. Never the less, YAY! Then one child will start crying because it’s not their birthday and they aren’t getting any presents today and all hell breaks loose again. As the Queen you are, you then think, ok I am going to go and have a nice long hot shower whilst today’s plans are
executed. You sneak off to have some “peace”, sit on the loo and at least one family member will “pop in” to ask a pointless question. You deflect to another adult in the house and head for the shower thinking how good it is to deflect, you hop in and just as the water hits your hair, they are back with the biggest crisis that only mummy can solve. You take a deep breath and give up that hair mask and shaving all your bits that needed to be done two weeks ago, and give yourself an uppercut for thinking you could have a peaceful shower whilst they are awake. You compromise with yourself and commit to do it once they go to bed. You have a quick shower, put on a robe and ask, “What are we doing today, so I can dress for it?” The reply? “Well…. What do you want to do today? We thought you could choose.” You internally scream as you know all the fancy places are booked out in advance, then the kids start arguing putting forth what they want to do, so you end up with your hairy legs in long pants in the local food court so everyone can eat the lunch they want. Finally, there is five minutes of peace and you take a moment to look at your little humans and reflect on how being a mum is the best job in the world. And even though it is 24/7 365 days a year of non-stop doing, thinking and being, you wouldn’t change it for the world. Happy Mothers Day ladies, whatever your day ends up like, just make sure you take five minutes to celebrate you.

Mums Making a Difference Being a mum is by far the most rewarding and challenging role you will ever take on. It is one that requires you to put someone else before you, to keep your head up, even when your motivation is down, and to unleash superhero powers that you didn’t even know you had (like being able to chase away monsters under the bed and heal a wound with a simple kiss). Like all mums out there, our featured Mackay mums go above and beyond every single day. Not only are they raising children, but they are also making a positive impact on the Mackay community. Come and meet our Mackay mums who are making a difference.
In less than six months, Leanne Druery went from a real estate agent selling houses to a widower and single mum of two. Leanne started with Gardian Real Estate four years ago as a personal assistant. However, she quickly moved into sales and excelled in the new role. When her husband of 18 years was diagnosed with cancer she took time off to be his personal carer. Tony lost his battle with cancer in December 2016 and Leanne made an impulse decision to apply for the Elite Agent competition that would inevitably boost her to new heights. She was selected as one of just six agents around Australia to be nominated for the 2017 Elite Agent of the Year and is now busy raising her two teenagers (Max and Grace) all the while juggling a career and focusing on the future. Tell us a little about being an Elite Agent. I was at a really low point in my life and Transform provided me with Elite Performance Coaches and Trainers. It helped to motivate me to be a great role model for my two teenagers and to those experiencing a tough time in their lives. What’s your favourite thing about living in Mackay? There are so many great things about living in Mackay but I love working with the people of Mackay. When Tony was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer last year, it became very evident that we live in a really caring and compassionate community. Our family and friends rallied around us, but I also had complete strangers offering all sorts of support. You don’t get that community spirit just anywhere. Any exciting plans for the future? Our family has always loved to camp and travel. We had planned to travel to New Zealand last September, but due to Tony’s diagnosis in August we had to cancel the holiday. The kids and I have decided to go this year and we have Tony’s brother and his family travelling with us. It’s time to create some new memories and to keep family traditions.

Fallon Drewett Creator of the Just Saying Project
pakmag
Jess Rath Teacher and Soroptimist International Mackay Region 2016 Woman Achiever of the Year
After giving birth to her son, Fallon, like so many mums, felt as if she had lost her sense of self. As a former print journalist, it was only natural for Fallon to start writing down her thoughts.
Not only is Jess a busy mum of four boys, but she is also a primary school teacher at Mackay Christian College as well as the facilitator of Faith THEN Food and Fitness online community and an advocate for Destiny Rescue.
What started out as a blog and Facebook page quickly spiralled into a successful business known as the Just Saying Project – a company which aims to create events that connect, empower and motivate women from all walks of life.
Last year she was awarded the Soroptimist International Mackay Region 2016 Woman Achiever of the Year for her achievements in helping to improve the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities at a local and global level.
Fallon lives in West Mackay with her husband, Steve and their two children – Archie, 3 and Daisy, 1.
Not only is Jess an active member of the community and the C3 Church Mackay, but she has also travelled to Thailand and Cambodia to help free very young girls from sexual slavery and human trafficking through the organisation Destiny Rescue.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Mackay? The flow of our region; it is uniquely paced with its relaxed living. The people are the soul of the city. There is such a generosity of spirit which makes it such an inviting place to stay and it is a creative hive of exciting activity in both the business and cultural sectors, which shows we have what it takes to push the envelope. Tell us about the Just Saying Project: The Just Saying Project provides women with bespoke events that empower them to believe in who they are, open their minds to new ways of thinking and give them a space to unwind and reconnect with themselves, friends and other like-minded women. We host our Just Be You events every Saturday afternoon and our recent 50 Fabulous Faces exhibition was a big success. We are now focused on our first Just For Girls event, for young women 12 to 17 years old, being held in July, as well as another Fabulous Project similar to our 50 Fabulous Faces. For more information visit www.thejustsayingproject.com. Who is the person you look up to the most and why? I am surrounded by some of the most amazing people in my life who are creative, generous and kind. They are the people I look up to, the people who are willing to give you a helping hand, show you compassion and are there to create a life full of hope and wonder. What is your favourite thing to do with the kids? We just love to hang out at home where we read, do puzzles and play with the kids in the backyard. It is simple in essence, but to us it is significant to make time for our children and include them in our day-to-day activities.
How did it feel winning the Soroptimist International Mackay Region Woman Achiever of the Year for 2016? Soroptimist International is a global organisation that works to transform the lives of women and girls. It’s quite a large organisation, operating in 133 countries. When I received the award I was in complete shock! I am such a humble person; I am happy to talk about the organisations I advocate for but to receive an award for myself was very overwhelming. Tell us about your work with Destiny Rescue. I first became involved with Destiny Rescue in 2010 and I went on my first mission trip to Thailand with them in 2013. This experience completely broke my heart and changed my life! I saw girls, young girls the same age as my niece, in grotty, disgusting Thailand brothels. I witnessed the life transformations of these girls as they were rescued, counselled and loved by the wonderful volunteers of Destiny Rescue. This experience forever changed my heart and my focus. I have been on three trips to Thailand and Cambodia for Destiny Rescue and speak at events, hold fundraising events (funding rescues, or funding needs within Destiny Rescue), obtain sponsorships for Rescue Homes, and sell their wonderful handmade Rescue Jewellery. What do you and the family like to do to unwind? On the weekends, we (Jess has four sons – Braydon, Donavan, Codey and William with husband, Paul) will light the fire pit at night and sit around it just talking, I don’t know if it’s their favourite thing to do but it sure is mine. It’s so good to be able to talk away from the distractions of technology.

PARENTING
pakmag
Ba n i s h i n g B e h av i o u r STORY Jenna Galley
Children misbehave for a number of different reasons. In some instances, there may be an underlying behavioural disorder at play. In other instances, the child may be acting out because he or she has not been taught otherwise. Although all parents can expect to deal with a few tantrums during their parenting journey, is it possible to prevent poor behaviour from becoming part of a child’s regular routine? Many parenting experts agree that, yes, it is possible to banish bad behaviour in children. It all comes down to knowing the best discipline strategies to resolve these behaviours before they become bigger problems.
When a child’s poor behaviour is ignored, Dr. Sears believes that the child learns that this behaviour does not gain attention and eventually he will stop it on his own.
Shaping Children’s Behaviour
Children learn by example. So lead by example. You cannot expect your child to watch you behave poorly (and get positive results) and not expect to do the same.
Parenting expert Dr. Sears offers several approaches to help parents handle poor behaviour in children in a gentle and non-threatening way. All strategies can be incorporated into your daily routine to help squash poor behaviour. 1. Practice praise, not criticism Rather than focus on the poor behaviour, focus on the positive behaviour. Dr. Sears also suggests that you praise the behaviour, not the person. Praise, however, is different to reward. Praise is a simple acknowledgment or a compliment so your child sees that you are paying attention. Dr. Sears recommends keeping track of how many times you praise your child versus how many times you criticise your child in a 24-hour period. If the criticism is higher than the praise, then you may be shaping your child in the wrong direction.
3. Check your own behaviour
4. Consider a behaviour chart Similar to a chore chart, a behaviour chart tracks the behaviour of everyone in the family. Good behaviour gets a sticker. Poor behaviour does not. 5. Teach consequence A child needs to understand that poor behaviour will lead to a poor result. This is an invaluable lesson in childhood and adulthood. For example, teach your child that if he doesn’t do something, then he loses out. If he doesn’t pick up his toys, don’t do it for him. Bin them (or hide them until he learns that this isn’t how things work). 6. Negotiate smart
2. Choose to ignore
While negotiating with your child may seem like you are letting them win, this isn’t the case, Dr. Sears explains.
Pick your battles, Dr. Sears suggests. Otherwise you will end up driving yourself crazy. Dr. Sears admits that in his household he ignores “smallies” which are behaviours that are annoying but do not cause harm to humans, animals or property.
“Bargaining with your child doesn’t compromise your authority; it strengthens it. Children respect parents who are willing to listen to them. Children must accept your authority— that’s not negotiable; but that doesn’t mean you can’t listen to their side of things.”
www.pakmag.com.au MAY 2017
11
Negotiating means having a two-way conversation with your child. Rather than it being “my way or the highway” (which works in some instances), children need to feel that their opinions matter and that they are respected too. 7. Withdraw privileges Sometimes communication works. Other times, the only way to get your child to learn from his poor behaviour is to withdraw privileges. You swear, no iPad. You hit your sister, no scooter. These rules need to be established and understood before you can put them into action (see below). And they need to be followed through on, which means you cannot weaken, no matter what. 8. Hold regular family meetings Family meetings allow you to set up house rules. Make family meetings part of your regular routine where you look at different problems as a team and come up with solutions on how to prevent poor behaviours together.
Understanding Bad Behaviour Bad behaviour one: Lying Children often tell tales to gain attention. In other instances, they may tell a lie to avoid getting into trouble. Lying can easily turn into a bad habit for your child, especially if he is not taught that lying is not acceptable. Even if there is no malice behind the lie, it is important that you respond to an ‘over-exaggeration’ calmly and directly. Talk to your child one on one (and never in front of a crowd which could cause embarrassment) about why lying is wrong and why we don’t lie. Discipline methods to consider: • Praise (when he tells the truth) • Teach consequence (what harm can lying cause?) • Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings Bad behaviour two: Defiance When a toddler mutters, “no” for the first time, it’s cute. But after hearing your child say, “no” for the 8 gazillionth time, it loses its cuteness and becomes a problem. Defiance refers to when a child purposely refuses to follow your instructions or rules. It puts you in an uncomfortable position as it tests your limits and your authority. It can also be embarrassing when the defiance occurs in public. All children are going to push the boundaries but it is important that parents put a stop to defiance as quickly as possible. At the end of the day, you are the boss. Discipline methods to consider: • Praise (when direction is followed) • Negotiation • Chore charts
12
MAY 2017 www.pakmag.com.au
• Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings Bad behaviour three: Swearing Children often pick up a potty mouth from the people around them. Yes, parents swear. And yes, parents should be allowed to swear because we are adults. But kids don’t always understand this. The best way to stop swearing and potty mouth problems? Make sure the entire household stops. Discipline methods to consider • Chore charts (or swear jars) • Lead by example • Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings Bad behaviour four: Aggression Violence and aggression is a hard one to handle because often the reason for this behaviour comes down to emotions, something that can be difficult for children to control. However, aggression needs to be stopped before it becomes a bigger problem. Discipline methods to consider • Lead by example • Teach consequence • Withdraw privileges • Communication during family meetings • If the aggression continues, seek professional assistance Bad behaviour five: Tantrums Tantrums are common in toddlers and pre-schoolers and are usually due to a child not being able to communicate what he or she wants. Sometimes children have tantrums to get attention or to try and get what they want. As a child gets older tantrums may not be as obvious. Rather than kicking, screaming and lying on the floor at Coles, older children may sulk, stomp their feet or slam doors. Discipline methods to consider: • Negotiate • Choose to ignore • Withdraw privileges • Communicate during family meetings Whatever your tact, and whatever your child’s personality, dealing with bad behaviour is inevitable as parents. Each child is different and their responses to certain discipline methods will be different too. The underlying theme and most important thing to think about when dealing with this behaviour is finding what works for you, and being consistent. Good luck, you may need it!
Making Mates STORY Jenna Galley Making friends when you are an adult is actually a lot harder than when you were a child. Whether you’ve just moved here, you’ve just had a baby or you are simply looking to expand your social circle, here’s what you need to know about making friends with other parents.
Know where to go Mackay is bustling with parks, playgrounds and indoor play facilities perfect for little ones of all ages. Even if you don’t know anyone, there is no harm in striking up a conversation with another mum or dad who is also supervising their kids at the same playground as you. The libraries often offer free child and parent programs that will give you another opportunity to meet other parents in your community. Find your neighbourhood park Have a stroll around the block and check out the parks in your area. Getting out of the house in the afternoons and going to a park is a great way to wind down and meet parents in your neighbourhood. Other children and parents at the park most likely also live close by and most likely frequent the park often. After initiating conversation, you could try asking if they want to meet again another day at the same time. If you are going to a park, you may want to bring along a bag of extra toys in case other kids are there. Often children will gravitate towards toys and this is a great way to help your little one socialise and also initiate conversation with the parents.
For babies, check out swimming lessons, baby massage courses or Gymbaroo. For toddlers, enrol in a mummy (or daddy) n’ me dance program, Kindergym or Tiny Tots, all of which will give you the chance to meet other parents who are participating in the program with their kids. The good thing about these programs is that they tend to go for a full term, which means you have 10-12 weeks to get to know the parents and children in the program. Check out our What’s On Guide and Regular Events Guide for a list of some of the programs and times. Join a club Finding other like-minded adults doesn’t have to be confined to child-related activities. Joining a club such as netball, soccer, volleyball or even non-sporting clubs such as drama is a great way to meet other adults and get yourself a new hobby at the same time. Mackay has a multitude of different clubs that you can join, so there really is something for everyone. Speak up Attending your first playgroup, mother’s group or club meeting can feel like you have returned to your first day of high school all over again.
Enrol in a program
Regardless of where you are going, speak up. Don’t be afraid to initiate a conversation, to offer your phone number or to ask if they would like to get together another time.
Attending a regular class every week is a great social outing to add to your routine. There are drop-in and scheduled programs for children of all ages, starting as young as infants.
Yes, your adult conversation skills may be a little rusty if communicating with your kids is your only contact with other humans, but you will most likely find that the other parents are in the exact same situation.

HEALTH
pakmag
+ HEALTH Allergy Awareness STORY Rose Foster In Australia, nearly 20 per cent of the population suffer from allergies to some degree. That’s 4.1 million people. Since there are many different categories of allergies and many different reactions, the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia group seeks to bring understanding and awareness to all of these, kicking off with Food Allergy Awareness week from 14-20 May 2017.
Food Allergy Awareness
What to Do in an Emergency
In Australia, one in ten babies will develop a food allergy of some kind. This is a statistic that is increasing, making Australia a country with one of the highest instances of food allergies in the world. It is therefore more important than ever to make sure we’re all aware of food allergies, what a reaction looks like and how we can assist if we do see an emergency situation.
• Call 000 immediately.
Other Allergies Other allergies which can cause allergic reactions include insect stings, hay fever, or pet allergies. The reaction to these can vary from a slight itch and sneezing to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction which is potentially life threatening as it usually leads to the victim not being able to breathe. Signs of Anaphylaxis Signs of anaphylaxis vary from person to person but will generally include difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, tightness of the throat, dizziness. In some cases, this will also include swelling to the face, lips or eyes.
• Check to see if they have an epinephrine auto injector (or “epi pen”). Many people with severe food allergies will carry an epi pen but it is important not to inject someone suffering anaphylaxis if the epi pen does not belong to them – you may cause more harm than good. • Try to keep the person calm, and lie them on their back and raise their feet. • Loosen their clothing to make breathing easier. • Be sure to turn them on their side if they are vomiting. Asthma Asthma is sometimes grouped under the ‘allergy’ umbrella, as there are certain types of asthma which are triggered by allergic reactions (eg. pollen, mould, etc.). In the event of an asthma attack, keep the person calm, encourage them to breathe slowly and use their inhaler every 30-60 seconds (max. 10 puffs). If this becomes more serious or does not subside after using the inhaler, call 000 and continue to use the inhaler every 30-60 seconds.
Your Cleaning Regime and Allergies Do you know where it all began for ENJO Australia? For those of you who aren’t in the know, Barb de Corti, CEO and Founder of ENJO Australia, discovered ENJO when her son, Mark, was diagnosed with asthma at just three years of age. As there is no cure for Asthma, uncovering what triggered Mark’s asthma was key to controlling his symptoms. With a trial and error approach, Barb learnt that dust and cleaning chemicals were major triggers to her son’s asthma attacks, and a trip to Austria is when Barb discovered ENJO. Using fibre technology and water, ENJO was a healthier way to clean that reduced Mark’s asthma symptoms, so Barb brought ENJO to Australia in 1994, and hasn’t looked back! ENJO is now used in over 1 million households Australia wide, and has partnered with Asthma Australia, raising awareness and funding research to find a cure. If you are inspired by a healthier way of living and would like to see ENJO in action, contact Anne Naylor, your local ENJOpreneur 0438 362 561.

Birthing Options STORY Jenna Galley Giving birth is one of the most incredible (and most likely difficult) things you will ever do. You want to make sure you are comfortable, calm and content in your environment. In Mackay and surrounds, mothers have a number of choices when it comes to giving birth.
Public Hospital
Birth Centre
73 per cent of mothers who gave birth in an Australian hospital in 2014 opted for a public hospital. The public system has everything you need to ensure a positive delivery experience, including highly qualified midwives, doctors, specialists and anaesthesiologists, if required.
Only 1.8 per cent of women opted to give birth in a birth centre in 2014; however, this is most likely because birth centres are not available in every town. Mackay is lucky enough to have one of Queensland’s leading birth centres – Mackay Birth Centre, which provides a homely birthing experience. However, you will need to book into the birth centre (as early as possible) and your pregnancy must be deemed ‘low-risk’.
Public hospitals also feature individual labour wards with toilet and shower facilities, a private bathtub if you choose a water birth and additional facilities to help with your labour experience. Giving birth and post-delivery recovery at a public hospital is free to all Medicare card holders.
Private Hospital 27 per cent of mothers who gave birth in an Australian hospital in 2014 opted to go through the private healthcare system. Although it is available to everyone, there are large rebates available for those with a private healthcare provider, such as Medibank, AHM or BUPA. However, even with private healthcare, there will most likely be some out-of-pocket expenses to consider. Mater Hospital in Mackay comes with private recovery rooms, special meal plans and your choice of obstetrician to deliver your baby.
The Mackay Birth Centre operates through the public health care system which means your stay is free. You will still have access to qualified midwives, doctors and all the specialist services you may require.
Doula and Home Birth Services During labour, you are going to need support. Many mums will rely on a doula to provide them with one-onone guidance. A doula can join you in the private or public hospital or you may wish to give birth at home with the support of a doula by your side. Only 0.3 per cent of births in Australia are home births. However, this number is most likely going to increase as more mums become aware of this option. Home births offer a personalised experience in the comfort of your own home; however, the main downfall is that you don’t have immediate access to medical staff and support.
Pre-natal and Post-natal Care In the lead up to the birth, you will be required to attend regular pre-natal appointments, which can also be done through the private healthcare system or public system. Through the private system you can choose which obstetrician to see for all of your appointments (and for your post-delivery check). Most obstetricians also offer a chance for a glimpse at your bub through an ultrasound every appointment. Through the public healthcare system you will see whichever midwife is on duty on the day of your appointment with one 20 week ultrasound scheduled (or more if your pregnancy is ‘high-risk’). After you have had bub, the public healthcare system offers a unique midwife service in which a midwife will come to you, check that you and bub are settling in and offer support on sleeping, breastfeeding and more.
One Last Thing… When it comes to childbirth, things don’t always go to plan. You may require medical care and need to go to hospital even though you wanted a home birth. You may end up delivering bub at home before making it to the hospital. When it comes to labour, anything can happen. So prepare as best you can and brace yourself for the wonderfully unpredictable experience of child birth. www.pakmag.com.au MAY 2017

Is there such a thing as too much praise?
Spinal Health in Babies
STORY Goodstart Early Learning national manager professional practice Greg Antcliff
May’s Spinal Health Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness of spinal health and good posture in adults, but it’s also important to remember that developing a healthy spine from a young age is extremely important for spinal health into adulthood.
For parents, most of us will say “well done” without even thinking about it. But research shows general praise like this may not help our children learn about what it is we want to encourage. Being specific is the key to promoting positive behaviour, self-efficacy and resilience in children. A key to giving praise is to understand the three types of praise – descriptive, praise for effort and persistence, and trait-based. Descriptive praise Descriptive praise involves making positive statements to someone about something they did. • “I like it when you …” • “Thank you for…” • “You’ve done a great job of…” Descriptive praise can make it more likely that a child will engage in positive behaviours and it can also strengthen the quality of their social interactions. Praise for effort and persistence Praising a child for effort and persistence can help children build a view of themselves as having malleable abilities that can be impacted by their effort and persistence. They are less likely to think their abilities are fixed and more willing to work harder to improve areas they can change. "I can see that you're finding it hard to solve the puzzle but you didn't give up and you solved it." Trait-based praise
STORY Rose Foster
Spinal Development When babies are born, although their vertebrae and spinal cord are present, there is some development needed to bring their spine into its ‘correct’ position. After birth, a baby’s spine resembles a ‘C’ shape, which begins to alter when bub begins to lift his head, as a secondary curve is formed in the neck. The final secondary curve, the lower back arch, is formed when a baby begins crawling. Knowing these developmental milestones is important for good spinal health, and giving your baby tummy time and ensuring you don’t place bub in carriers that restrict movement for long periods of time are essential. Problems Many baby car seats can be restrictive for baby’s spinal health development. Even bouncy seats, prams and swings can encourage baby to stay in a C position. Ensuring you have an ergonomic car seat and don’t keep baby in containers for long periods of time can go a long way to helping your baby develop good spinal health. Help at Home Tummy time is essential for babies to build up muscle strength around their spines, leading to reaching their spinal health milestones.
Trait-based praise such as “wow, clever boy!” can be useful in specific situations for a limited time or for the early stages of skill acquisition, such as an infant taking their first steps. However, trait-based praise can also be detrimental to children’s learning development and wellbeing.
It is also important that you don’t try to force milestones on your baby. Making him sit upright before he has the appropriate spinal strength means the entire weight of the head presses on the spine, which could lead to irreparable damage.
Tip! To set your child up for success in school and life, try to consciously build your skills in descriptive praise and praise for effort and persistence.
As your child gets older, it is important to encourage good spinal health by teaching your child not to slouch, providing a firm bed and ensuring a well-balanced diet.

IN CHILDREN STORY Rose Foster A Learning Disability is defined as ‘a condition giving rise to learning difficulties, especially when not associated with physical disability’. The description is broad and, although it goes someway to explaining the essence behind such disorders, it doesn’t really give a true sense of the spectrum of levels of severity which can be present. In reality, learning disabilities can range from difficulty learning to read and write to the more severe cases, where dependence on others for daily life is necessary.
Types of Learning Disabilities Disorders such as ADHD, Dyslexia and processing deficits are amongst the most common types of learning disabilities. Although they all come with different symptoms, they all impair learning for a child in some way or another. More severe learning disabilities need a higher level of care, with sufferers having little to no understanding of their surroundings or themselves. Assistance is often required with daily tasks that many of us take for granted like toileting, eating and bathing. Diagnosis
H E L P AT H O M E
Severe learning disabilities are typically diagnosed at birth or in very early childhood and generally, signs of developmental issues will be picked up by paediatricians.
Mild and moderate learning disabilities are sometimes harder to diagnose and are often not noticed until a child starts school. Looking out for potential signs of mild or moderate learning disabilities and paying attention to developmental milestones is important for early diagnosis. With early intervention, children often show improvements in their ability to learn and perform tasks they may have been struggling with. Potential signs to be aware of include: Preschool Age ●● Difficulty following directions/ learning routines ●● Difficulty controlling pencils or colouring within lines ●● Difficulty pronouncing words, learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes, etc
Age 5-9 Years ●● Slow to learn new skills ●● Difficulty telling time and
connecting letters and sounds
●● Difficulty with maths Age 10-13 Years ●● Difficulty reading and writing, especially reading aloud
●● Difficulty expressing thoughts aloud
●● Poor handwriting If you notice these things in your
child, seeing your GP is your first port of call. Early intervention can be the
key to ensuring children with learning disabilities have the best chance of
reaching developmental milestones.
Although some learning disabilities require professional assistance and care, there are some things that you can do to assist your child, if they have a mild to moderate learning disability. Communication with your child’s school is essential. Keep them in the loop, discuss learning options and styles with them and develop a plan to track your child’s milestones together. Remember: school success does not equate to life success. Children with learning difficulties may not achieve the best grades at school, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go on to achieve great things. Focus on the things your child likes and excels in and give them the opportunity to explore these things. Look after yourself too. When you’re focussed on ensuring your child’s needs are met, you can sometimes forget about yourself. Enlist the help of those around you to help.

pakmag CRAFT
MAKE
DAY
SWIRLY PAPER FLOWERS
These cute curly flowers are super easy to create and are the perfect DIY gift that little ones will love making. What you’ll need: • Colourful paper • A pair of scissors • Craft glue
2
Step 1:
Step 2:
With your desired coloured paper, cut long vertical strips, keeping in mind these strips will make up your flowers, so make sure the strips are even to produce the best curls. Fold a thin crease (2cm) along one of the vertical edges.
Cut a fringe the strip of paper, making sure to leave the folded strip uncut and keep the fringes thin. Handy Hint: Fold the strip before cutting to save time.
3
4
5
Step 3:
Step 4:
Step 5:
To make the curls, roll each fringe all the way to the folded crease. This step does take time but is definitely worth the result.
To make the flowers stem, simply use a green sheet of paper and roll it diagonally from one end to the other, making sure the paper is pulled tight to create a strong structure. Secure the end with a touch of glue.
To complete the flower, apply glue to the underside of the flowers folded crease and wrap it gently around the stem, starting from the top and working down until the flowers end.

Step 1: Once you've decided what scent you would like to make, have your little one tear or cut (be mindful of sharp scissors) the herbs and flowers. Step 2: After all the flowers and herbs have been cut and arranged into their different scents, add them inside each bottle until it’s three quarters full. Step 3: Add six drops of essential oil to each bottle, then add in filtered water until each bottle is full. We suggest using a funnel to prevent any spillages. Place the lid on each bottle and shake well to distribute the essential oil. Add a handmade Mother’s Day gift tag, with a sweet message on the back for each perfume bottle. Handy Hint: As these perfumes are made from fresh herbs and flowers, the scent will only last a couple of days. This Mother’s Day craft is a sweet and educational idea for the kids to enjoy while creating a unique gift for their loved one. Thanks to www.hellowonderful.co

pakmag HOME
KITCHEN KEEN With The Block's Caro and Kingi It’s important not to blur the line between decorating and cluttering, especially in a kitchen environment. Here are our tips for making your kitchen clutter free while keeping your personal style. If you have a blank wall, try installing a set of shelves to display your unique collection of mugs or dishes while creating a decorative storage unit.
Bringing Nature Inside Make your kitchen feel fresh again by finally adding that potted herb garden you’ve been talking about. There are endless ways to display and decorate your kitchen with a herb garden, whether it be hanging from a wall structure or built into the kitchen bench, these gardens are the perfect accessory that are both practical and decorative.
Your kitchen, like a good outfit, needs the right accessories to complete its unique style. Try adding a pop of colour to your kitchen with bright stools or a decorative rug. Remember to use bright colours in your kitchen as dark shades are known to reduce natural light.

If you plan to paint your kitchen, stick to one or two colours; any more can make the space seem messy or cluttered. We suggest trying a pastel colour scheme, including shades of pink and blue to create a clean modern environment. Pair these colours with a white marble counter top and rose gold utensils to complete this unique look. Splashbacks A simple way to revamp your kitchen at an affordable price is the use of an effective splashback. If you already have an existing splashback, try adding a unique touch of colour by replacing it with decorative wallpaper with a clear glass panel in-front of it.

WHAT'S NEWS pakmag
WHAt's NEWS in Business Your Family’s Future: Wills and Estate Planning You may not think it, but if you have a car, house, a bank account or any possessions at all, you have an estate. And planning for what will happen to your estate once you’re gone is important.
It’s often something that is at the back of our minds, something we continuously put off, but making a will is possibly one of the most important things you can do in life. If you’ve not got one, you need to write one, now!
Having children is perhaps one of the most important reasons to write a will. Knowing that your children will be in the hands of a guardian of your choosing gives you peace of mind that they will be well looked after, loved and raised the way you would have wanted.
Whether you’ve got a little or a lot, having a will is essential to ensuring your assets are distributed to the people you want them distributed to. Without a will, ambiguity over your intentions could mean your possessions end up in the ‘wrong’ hands. Often, this can cause fights amongst your family members, and at a time fraught with emotions, the last thing needed is tension.
It’s not something we like to think about, but tomorrow is not guaranteed. Putting off making a will could be tempting fate and may mean if the unexpected happens, you’re not prepared. Our tip? Check out your options for making a will now, there are plenty of Will and Estate Planners in Mackay, many offering free consultations, so book in to see one today.

Daddy Diary May is a month all about mothers. Those wonderful people who have done so much for us and continue to do so. Our mothers brought us into the world and, for most, they’ve cared for us at our lowest, they’ve helped us reach the heights that we are capable of and more, and they have been there to offer the best advice that we could ever want, 24/7.
My 13-year-old may become a mother one day and, if the time comes, if she shows any of the amount of empathy and love she shows as a teenager, I think we should all be very happy indeed.
This month is a time when we need to go out of our way to make sure that we thank these ladies in our lives for all the things they’ve done and are doing.
My mum, who lives back in Sydney now, is one of the greatest ladies the world has ever seen. She helps anyone and everyone and has been doing it since before I was born. She brought four great kids into the world who have gone onto wonderful careers. Two of them are nurses, one is an accountant and the other one has the best job out of the lot of them, as he’s on Star 101.9.
When was the last time you actually thanked your mum for what she’s
In all seriousness, every mum would be able to put her hand up this month

done for you? Been a while? Never? Can’t because she isn’t with us down here anymore? It doesn’t matter what the circumstance is, there’s always time to express your gratitude.

and be proud of their children and what they’ve achieved so far. For the little ones reading this, go and give your mum a hug and a kiss plus a huge thanks for being there. Never forget what she’s done for you now and into the future. Happy Mother’s Day to every mum this month. Your blood is worth bottling 365 days a year. Oh and don’t forget, Mother’s Day is that one day where what you say goes. Anything you need done has to be done by someone else. Try it out and see how that goes! Have fun, Rob Kidd Star 101.9 Mackay and the Whitsundays.
