38 welcome note Hi again and welcome to our 11th edition. How time flies when you’re having so much fun. I can’t believe our first birthday is already fast approaching! We had an awesome Pirate PakClub last month and a massive thank you must go out to all the local businesses who came along to showcase their products and participated in the fun. My family and I headed south for the school holidays. A lovely time was had soaking up the East Coast sunshine and beautiful scenery but most of all, my favourite part was having the time to sit and watch our son playing in the sand and sea. I hope all of you got a chance to do something lovely with your families over the school break.

We all know that a balanced and healthy diet is essential to growing bodies. So it stands to reason that good nutrition is essential to developing teeth. To give your child the best start – and all the minerals necessary for growing teeth – ensure your pregnancy diet is high in fresh fruit and veggies, with plenty of dairy during the final trimester.

After birth, breast milk or formula should be your child’s main source of nutrition. If you want to comfort your baby with a bottle, use cooled boiled water and feed in an upright position. This avoids the pooling of liquids in the bottom of the mouth which bathes the teeth in sugars. Sugars are broken down by bacteria naturally present in the mouth to form weak acids that leach minerals out of the tooth. When this happens frequently, a cavity forms. If we reduce

the frequency of simple sugars, we reduce the risk of decay. With this in mind, never give your baby a bottle during sleeping hours, nor coat their dummy in sweetened substances such as honey. At about six months of age begin introducing a cup and by the age of two, the bottle should be discarded completely. When introducing solids, begin with simple boiled veggies and stewed fruit without added sugar. Taste buds develop with exposure to certain foods so the earlier you introduce lollies, juices and soft drink, the earlier they will develop a taste for sugar. Fresh fruit and veggies, nuts and grains, dairy food and water do not have the processed

sugars that are most commonly linked to dental decay and are always the best option. Only offer your child water and fresh fruit between meals and keep the lollies and soft drinks for treats and rewards. If you insist on giving kids juices or cordials, consider diluting them and consuming them with meals so food can help to clear them from the mouth. And remember – with regular dental check ups we can detect early signs of decay and remineralize the tooth before a filling is needed. Prevention is the key! When does the soothing comfort of thumb sucking start to become a concern, asks Carla Lejarraga Parents are often amazed at their child’s sucking.

A child who sucks, however, generally has a habit

When your child is watching TV or in the car, have distractions nearby that keep their hands occupied such as a “busy box” full of Lego, stress balls, playdough and puzzles. Children that thumb and digit suck find that warmth and attention from both parents is helpful during the “quit” phase, so it is important not to try to stop the habit during busy and stressful times. Some children are able to quit on their own, but others may need professional guidance. If your child is having difficulty on a regular basis with completion of their homework, this needs to be discussed with the teacher. Very often learning problems are revealed through procrastination or avoidance of homework and need to be diagnosed as early as possible. Emotional difficulties may also come to light through homework such as perfectionists who are so focused on getting things perfect that nothing gets finished or they have tantrums if it’s inevitably not perfect. These show themselves well in the homework situation and require professional assistance to help the child to develop coping strategies.

of prominence in the Townsville region over the past few years. This is thanks to a school called Group Capoeira Brazil who teach the art form in the area to anyone looking to learn. African slaves first formed Capoeira in Brazil during the 16th Century. They were looking to develop a martial art that seemed like a dance routine, in order to hide it’s meaning from their native Brazilian captors. Since then, modern day Capoeira has evolved in to graceful yet strong movements, and live music accompaniment. Group Capoeira Brazil was formed in 2001 and is currently run by instructor Mathew Eales, who has been working to introduce Townsville residents to this ancient art form. Although, Capoeira is popular with all age ranges, children currently make up a strong demographic of Group Capoeira Brazil’s students. Eales says this is because it’s simply a lot of fun.
