35 welcome note Hi everyone and welcome to our 7th edition of PakMag. As the weather cools down there are so many reasons to get outdoors and embrace this gorgeous town we live in. With so many wonderful events coming along, it’s always my favourite time of the year. I’m excited to announce our very first PakClub is happening this month at Brothers Leagues Club. Our first one is extra special as we are raising much needed funds for the Children’s Wards in the “Give me 5 for Kids” campaign. All the details are inside. I have a big “To Do” list this month - I want to be more active outdoors, start a vege patch, make a start on my house reno, cheer on my husband in his triathlon and the list goes on and on. So many things to do - I think I might just hang the hammock, grab my PakMag and swing in the breeze under the mango tree. Hope you have a great month whatever you’re doing. See you at PakClub and remember to tell everyone you read it in PakMag.

supporting our students With the natural disasters that have taken place within Australia and overseas over the last few months, Townsville Catholic Education’s team of Guidance Counsellors have been responding to those students who require support in dealing with their experiences and processing the images they have seen through media coverage. Even though many of these events may not have directly impacted us, the traumatic images that have been broadcast can sometimes make it feel that we have been directly affected, especially for children who may be too young to understand. The following info may assist parents/carers to manage these events and the associated emotional reactions that they can produce: • Comfort the child and reassure them of their safety. However, be careful not to give schoolaged children false assurance. • Encourage the child to talk about how they feel with their loved ones or other adults that they feel comfortable with. • Do not force discussion of a traumatic event, but if discussion does occur, try not to make it too detailed or graphic.

• Check what information your child may have received about an event at school from discussions with their friends so that any inaccuracies can be clarified. • Answer questions honestly, openly and ageappropriately. • If you can’t answer a question, tell your child that you will try to find out (this will give you some time to think about what you should say to them). • Focus on some of the more positive images from the event (e.g. communities coming together to assist in rebuilding/restoration efforts, donations/appeals, improved warning systems). • Wherever possible, limit the amount of television footage that your child is exposed to in

relation to an event. Viewing images of traumatic events are more likely to cause emotional reactions than just hearing reports. • Remember that the age of the child will affect how the information about the event is processed (e.g. younger children may actually think that an event is reoccurring based on replayed television images). Although it is normal for children to experience some symptoms of anxiety following these kinds of events and their portrayal in the media, symptoms should be carefully monitored by parents to ensure they are not disrupting the child’s involvement in normal daily activities. If you are concerned, support/advice should be sought from your GP or mental health professional.

Animal antics

animal antics

Story thanks to Shannon du Plessis

How to choose the right pet for your children I have long believed in the value of having pets throughout life. Not only do they bring comfort and joy when you need it most, they can be incredibly loyal companions who never fail to bring a smile to your face (even if they’ve just chewed up your favourite slippers!). It has also been proven that pets are great for our health. They can boost our self-esteem, lower our heart rate and blood pressure, and help prevent loneliness, particularly for the elderly. Pets love us unconditionally, but that doesn’t mean they can be left unsupervised with our children. The experience of looking after a pet gives children a sense of responsibility but only adults can truly be responsible for a family pet. Before you bring home a pet on impulse, sit down as a family and discuss what sort of pet is right for all of you. Decide who is responsible for feeding, grooming, walking, cleaning up litter and taking them for annual vet check-ups and vaccinations. Remember there are all sorts of pets suitable for children, not just dogs and cats. Fish, birds, hermit crabs, reptiles, mice, turtles, guinea pigs and backyard hens can all make great pets. I grew up with many cats, all of them strays who needed

an older dog or cat as puppies and kittens will bite and scratch as a way of playing and learning, and they may injure your child causing them to dislike the new pet in the house. Older pets are already trained, so there is less mess, and are generally more mature and calmer, so will respond to commands and not play rough. My daughter is great with our dog and likes to pat him, but she also has been caught letting him lick her ice blocks and sticking it back in her mouth! The dog likes to play rough with me but is gentle around our daughter, although I don’t trust him enough to leave them alone together. Dog attacks on children are terrible tragedies in so many ways. The thought of your own dog attacking and possibly killing one of your children is horrifying, but it has happened.

Cats view babies and toddlers as different species to adult humans. The key to introducing a new cat to the family is to supervise the cat’s natural curiosity, while protecting the baby and the cat from each other’s unexpected actions. Cats don’t smother babies (that was the traditional explanation for SIDS deaths), but instead get into the cot because it is soft, warm and high up. Try putting a shelf in the room instead – they will love to sit up there and watch the goings-on below instead of being near a squirming baby who cries all the time. Most cats will keep their distance from babies and toddlers, and are usually more tolerant of handling. Always ensure they have an escape route to lessen their anxiety should your children become too boisterous.

Dog owners who are sensible about how they manage interactions between their dogs and their children should have no problems, but if there are warning signs from the dog, such as barking, yapping or mouthing when it is playing, you should take steps to ensure your child is safe.

Method [1] Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 18cm x 28cm slice pan. In a large bowl, combine oats, sugar, coconut and sifted flours. [2] Heat butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan on low heat for 1-2 minutes, until butter has melted and mixture is well combined. [3] Make a well in centre of dry ingredients. Wardrobe wakeup

We can ansWer your question!

Story thanks to Gerlinda Aras

Defining your style a new web-based program, My Private stylist, is transforming lives and wardrobes everywhere. stylist and image consultant Gerlinda aras said the program makes fashion recommendations for women, based upon their personal measurements. “the program tells you what clothing you should wear for your body shape, age and measurements. no matter if you require clothing for business or pleasure, My Private stylist makes recommendations for your clothing, hairstyle, shoes, eyewear and accessories,” Ms aras said. “

The key to a successful wardrobe is wearing clothes that reflect your personality. Unfortunately many women succumb to the influence of fashion or the advice of family and friends and they end up losing sight of their own core style.

Give me 5 for kids JUNE is a very important month for us at 4TOFM. It is time for our annual Give Me 5 For Kids campaign which is our way of raising much needed funds for kids in North Queensland. Over the years this month long fundraiser has gathered hundreds and thousands of much needed dollars for the kids ward at the Townsville General Hospital. This year the Townsville Hospital Foundation would like us to support Allied Health. They are based at the Kirwan campus and work in Children’s Therapy Services. They help kids who are both permanently and temporarily disabled. In particular they are looking for funding for a new rehabilitation gym. Alli from the Hospital Foundation tells me that their goal is to “create a more engaging, therapeutic and stimulating environment for our patients”. The Kirwan Campus services over 500 referrals each year of children who are living with developmental and physical impairment, long term and life-limiting disabilities, and children living with post traumatic injuries. Local kids are given help with services including occupational therapy, speech pathology, physiotherapy and support through social work The money we raise will go towards the purchase of a sensory wall, a soft-fall exercise area and a video conferencing service. These are much needed items that normal funding can’t or won’t cover. So please keep locked in to 102.3 4TOFM this month to keep up to date with all of our FUNdraising ideas and dig deep because if everyone gave five for kids we could achieve a lot. And you never know, it could be one of your kids who will need these services sometime.
