35 welcome note Hi and welcome to the 6th Edition of Pakmag, our Mother’s Day Special Edition. This issue celebrates all the wonderful Mums out there and the fact that, put simply, there is nothing quite like the love you receive from your Mum, and nothing quite as wonderful and rewarding as becoming a mum. So to all of you out there Happy Mother’s Day and I hope you get spoilt and pampered on your special day! Also a big thank you to all who attended our Easter Egg hunt at North Shore. What a fab turnout considering the gloomy weather we had. Thanks for your support and we hope the lucky ones who won tickets to our HOP premiere enjoyed themselves too. Don’t forget if you have something of interest you want to share with us we would love to hear from you. Hope you all have a great month and don’t forget to tell everyone you read it in Pakmag! PS- Love you Mum!

Bullying has serious ramifications. If your child is bullied they are more likely to develop problems such as anxiety, depression and even drug use, so parents need to take it seriously. But whilst many parents have to deal with the heart breaking experience of their child coming home with stories of social rejection and aggression, how do you tell if it’s bullying? Bullying is defined as the repeated and intentional abuse of power to intimidate, hurt, oppress or damage. It includes: ➢ Physical Bullying – hitting, poking, tripping, pushing or damaging ones property.
school, deteriorating school work, not wanting to talk about their day, showing anger when you talk about what’s going on in their life, changes in friendships, acting anti-social, becoming teary on a Sunday night or Monday morning, loss of confidence, nightmares, bed wetting, restless sleep, loss of weight or overeating, unexplained physical injuries, bruises and scratches, torn clothing and getting in to trouble more often. When children are bullied they feel scared, lonely and hopeless. They also often feel ashamed that they have brought the bullying on themselves so it’s important to handle the situation carefully. TIPS FOR PARENTS
3. PROBLEM-SOLVE with your child to develop some alternative coping strategies so they are better equipped to deal with the problem on their own if possible. Often they know what to do and only require reassurance that they are capable. Ask questions such as “what is a good thing for you to do if it happens again?” to show them you have confidence that they can solve this problems. 4. EDUCATE your child to develop the social and emotional skills necessary for social connectivity. Many children need to be taught friendship and resilience skills for better social functioning. Courses at school and professionally are available. 5. RESIST contacting the other parent or child or becoming emotionally reactive. Contact the teacher only with the child’s permission since it

Mum Day Special Story thanks to our readers
“My son once said to me “Mummy, your boobies are really, really long” Hardly a compliment!”

Trudy
My two year old son walked up to a pregnant friend of mine at church, stuck his nose almost under her belly, then looked up at her and said “Why are you so FAT?!” When she explained that she had a baby growing in there, he asked her “Well, how are you going to get it OUT?!” Tori
“My 3 year old son was excited about learning about colours. We were in the supermarket and he was pulling his pants down to see what colour undies he was wearing which he then announced at the top of his voice. Then he tried to pull mine down to see what colour I was wearing!” Rachel
Having just done the grocery shopping with my 2 year old in the trolley I nipped in to the Bottle-O adjacent to buy a bottle of bubbles for a friend’s birthday. As I grabbed a bottle of pink fizz my little chap declared in a very loud and animated voice “Mummy’s juice!” Lucy Lucy

My husband and I like to Overall winner take the kids camping a lot where there are no toilets so my son has been taught to pee behind a tree. When he was 3 years old I had to go to Centrelink to register the birth of my third child. My son was tugging on my dress telling me that he needed to go pee. As we were nearly to the front of the line, I asked him to hold on for a bit. Since he quietened down I thought all was grand until I turned to around to find him peeing into one of the big fake pot-plants! Skye
“My 3 year old daughter Lily and I were waiting in the check out queue at the supermarket. Things had been tight in the money department, so I had quite often put things back I couldn’t afford. Once I had put toilet paper back because we had some left at home, so on this particular occasion my daughter grabbed the toilet paper and yelled at the top of her voice holding the toilet paper up high “Hey mum, can we afford toilet paper this week or do you want me to put it back!” Jodie
My three year old son was so keen to see Santa at daycare that he pushed all of the other kids out of the way to sit on his knee and told him “Santa, I’m not sure if you realise this but we live in the tropics here and I think it’s time you cut your beard off because it is too hot here for that”! Penny
While chatting to my next door neighbour my husband came out and told me that he needed me for something and as we were walking back inside at the top of his voice my 4 year old asked – “daddy, WHY did we have to rescue mummy?” Kay
As we entered a clothing store one day my 2½ year old went straight up to a naked mannequin in front of us and cupped her breasts saying “Oooh, boobies mummy, look boobies”. The sales assistant said “Wow, boys start young!” Lara

which you had no intention of repeating. And
I used to live in a small town in WA where I once drove to the local store to buy a few ‘grocery items’ before going to the local newsagent where I figured I could leave the kids in the aircon whilst I popped in to grab a newspaper. Back in the car I didn’t realise my young twins were helping themselves to the shopping bag and was only half listening as they talking about the new ‘band aids’ they were sticking on the car window. Yep, you guessed it, the entire town saw me driving down the main street with my new packet of pads stuck all over the windows!
Most dads have experienced their little ones accidently kicking their private parts which happened to my hubby several times. One day the pain was so bad he was screaming “Oh my balls!”. Our 2 year old daughter asked what the ball was so I told her and she asked if she has one. I answered ‘no because she is a little girl and little girls don’t have that parts’. When she turned 3 recently everybody told her she is a big girl now and she suddenly smiled proudly and said “I am big 3. Not little girl anymore. SOON MY BALLS GROWING!!” Of course, we then had to explain to everyone where that idea came from.

Whatever it is, all parents have hilarious stories of the funny things their young children say so we asked you to send us your funny stories. Unfortunately some of them hilarious but not suitable for publishing (!!) but here’s some of the cleaner ones that made us laugh:
I was at a linen party with my daughter when she was eating BBQ chicken wings and was enjoying them so much she ate lots. When a lady asked her ‘doesn’t your mother feed you’ she replied innocently ‘no I can feed myself’. Katie

baby first aid If you are one of those parents who have been planning to do a First Aid course, but never seem to get around to it, then you are not alone. The vast majority of people who take First Aid training do so because they need the certificate for work, but with drowning figures at the highest point in seven years, there has never been a better time to learn how to save a life.
Tips for parents: [1] Why not invite a first aid instructor to give a talk at your mothers group? You may just want to get the basics about first aid for infants and you may also be able to get a discount for a group booking. [2] If you’ve got littlies at home then investigate flexible delivery options where you might be able to attend a course over a couple of shorter sessions. Buddy up with a parent pal who may alternate with you and share the babysitting duties.
