45 welcome note Hi everyone & welcome to our 10th edition, our Father’s Day special. The tradition on Father’s Day in our household is that we grab a picnic lunch and a few blankets and we go and set up a spot somewhere gorgeous under a tree and we spend a lazy afternoon enjoying each others company. It’s always one of my most treasured days and I hope yours is the same. Last month was so exciting - the Cultural Fest was an awesome way to celebrate all the diverse Cultures and yummy food in our community and our monthly event PakClub was also loads of fun. The next one is Pirate themed so I hope to see all “me heartys” dressed up for an afternoon of fun & games. I can’t believe the school holidays are just around the corner so check out our what’s on guide and school holiday guide to find out what activities are on to keep the kids entertained. Until next time, happy reading and don’t forget totell everyone you read it in PakMag. Love you Dad X

the National Curriculum Board with the task of designing a single national school curriculum to replace the state based ones. After three years and much public debate ACARA (the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) is finally ready to roll out the first in its three-phase program. Starting 2012, all schools in North Queensland will be teaching Preps to Year 10s from the new curriculum in the areas of English, math and science. The second phase covering history, languages, geography and the arts, will be developed in 2012 by ACARA but the timeline for implementing it is still to be decided by Ministers (probably 2014/2015). The third phase to be developed will cover health and physical education, information and communication technology, economics, business, civics and citizenship). But what does it all mean for our children? We spoke to Lesley Englert, Queensland Board member of ACARA and guru on the national
“The new curriculum is narrower, it has less content, but there is a greater focus on the most important subjects. For example, early primary education will have a greater focus on literacy and numeracy. We are aiming for a greater depth of understanding in the core subjects rather than a superficial knowledge of lots of subjects”. Under the new curriculum there may be a shift from purely play based prep classes. An increase in more traditional teaching styles for prep classes has sparked arguments for and against in the academic community. Lesley points out that while the new curriculum outlines the content and standards to be achieved, it doesn’t specify how those should be delivered. It is her belief that play and enquiry
be adjusted to align with the rest of the nation. Because of this, Queensland Year 7 classes will be moved into high schools starting 2015 (although this may be earlier for some schools depending on facilities). Also, the amount of content covered in Year 7 will be increased. While during this transition period children will be taught as much as possible from the new curriculum, they are not expected to suddenly ‘get up to speed’. And according to Lesley there is good news for the kids in terms of homework. “Homework is an important way for children to consolidate what they are learning in school but the guidelines with regards to how much homework time children should be given by school year remains the same,” she says.
based activities are still the best way to teach younger age groups although there may be some ‘explicit’ teaching required.

So what exactly is temperament? Temperament is the behaviour patterns that we bring to various situations. For example: • Is your preschooler shy or outgoing in
Or the child who provokes conflict at home by digging their heels in, but is the perfect angel at school. These are classic examples of what can occur when parenting without understanding the child’s temperament.
• Distractibility – how easily distracted are they? • Sensitivity – how aware are they of things outside, even if it’s briefly? Although you can’t change a child’s temperament, you can work with it and manage it to improve how your family functions. Taking one of the above traits as an example: A child with an inhibited ‘Initial Reaction’ is timid about new experiences. Thus, parents can help by preparing for novelty situations, explaining plans and details and practicing or role-playing reactions to those situations, including social

PakBaby feature Story thanks to Chris Dellit
water babies A lot of new mums are still surprised when they hear that Swim Australia recommends beginning swim lessons for your bub as early as 4 months! It might seem a bit young but there are social, emotional, physical and mental benefits that extend way past water safety. Your newborn has just spent 9 months in amniotic fluid in your womb so it makes sense to continue exposing them to an environment that makes them feel safe. Water enhances a baby’s development of movement and coordination providing sensory information not available on land.

If you ask a mum in Australia why they go to swimming lessons, most will tell you its because they don’t want their child to drown, which is an excellent and responsible reason. However, if you ask a mum from Sweden they will tell you that they know their child will be socially, emotionally, physically and mentally more advanced than those that do not! It’s common knowledge in Sweden and now Swim Australia is conducting studies at Griffith

University to confirm these benefits.
Besides all of this, swimming lessons are just plain FUN and create a unique form of bonding and trust between child and parent. Did I teach my own boys to swim? Well, I tried but as every parent knows it can be difficult to teach our own children in some skills and swimming is one of them. If you have not been able to introduce your child to water this early it is very important that you attend a swim school that understands child development and its implications to swimming.

Wardrobe Wake Up Story thanks to Gerlinda Aras
styling men Domain Central 4779 9411 hsw.com.au
What not to wear? Or what to wear? We can ansWer your question!
When a woman looks in the mirror she sees the bits she doesn’t like, whereas when a man looks in the mirror all he sees is a handsome man staring back! Men seem to have a much easier time

of dressing. While women spend hours
choosing colours is this:
deciding what to wear, men simply open their wardrobe grab the nearest item and put it on. Men see clothes as a necessity; their choice is based on whether to wear ‘work clothes’ or ‘home clothes’. Unfortunately that often means wearing ‘home clothes’ when they venture out of the house at weekends! The best way to inject some style into a man’s wardrobe is to introduce some colour. Many men are stuck in a colour rut, afraid to wear strong colours they often opt for safe colours like white, pastel blue and black.
a new web-based program, My Private stylist, is transforming lives and wardrobes everywhere. stylist and image consultant Gerlinda aras said the program makes fashion recommendations for women, based upon their personal measurements. “the program tells you what clothing you should wear for your body shape, age and measurements. no matter if you require clothing for business or pleasure, My Private stylist makes recommendations for your clothing, hairstyle, shoes, eyewear and accessories,” Ms aras said. “ To find out more about the My Private stylist program, go to website www.mirrorimageconsultations.myprivatestylist.com/

Mario’s makeover
If you have warm hair, eyes and skin you will suit yellow-based colors such as orange red, orange, yellow, camel, green and brown. Gold jewellery looks the best. If you have cool hair, eye and skin you will look best in blue-based colours such as pink, blue and purple. Silver jewellery looks the best. If you’re not sure which of these suit you best there are plenty of neutral colours that suit everyone such as turquoise, salmon, earthy red, teal, navy, purple and plum. The main thing is to wear colours you love and that make you feel good!

Q&A: parenting Send in your parenting questions to our parenting expert and child psychologist Jutta Dempsey QUESTION: Teachers have said that my eight year old son is unmotivated and doesn’t try hard enough at school. His writing is messy and homework takes hours and often has us all in tears of frustration. He has always seemed so bright that we thought he would do well at school. How can I help my son see that school is important and he should try harder? In over 30 years of practice I have yet to see a child who can do the work easily and yet deliberately choose to do poorly at school and cause disappointment for himself, his teachers and his parents. However, on a daily basis I assess such “unmotivated and lazy” children and find that
they have a learning disorder, often hidden under a bright and talented mind. An assessment by an Educational Psychologist will show why your son is having difficulty at school and what can be done to assist him to cope within the learning environment in which he is clearly having difficulty in keeping pace with his age peers. It is completely natural for your son to question his own worthiness and ability as he compares himself with others in his class and finds that he can’t do as well as his friends. Children who experience too much failure early in life are vulnerable to a wide range of complications. When these children are poorly understood, when their specific problems go
unrecognised and untreated, or when they are misdiagnosed as lazy or inattentive, they are especially prone to behavioural and emotional difficulties that are frequently more severe than the learning problems that generated them. So, it is not unusual for your son to lose motivation, to become painfully anxious about himself, to display non compliance and to lose ambition when he is being misread and mistreated. Take the guesswork out of your son’s performance as soon as possible and have him assessed by an educational psychologist. Both he and his teachers will be grateful. If you would like to ask Jutta a question please send an email to elaine@pakmag.com.au

Generations of teenagers have tried hard to be seen as different from adults in the way they dress and behave. The bodgies, widgies, beatniks, rockers, hippies, bikers and surfers of past generations all belonged to subcultures with identifiable looks, ideas and attitudes. Circus Spectacular will host a variety of acts including; trampolining, acrobatics, tumbling, juggling, hoop dancing, poi and diablo. A very exciting part of the show will be a performance of the German Wheel; an extremely complicated apparatus which La Luna Youth Arts is only able to feature because of professional circus performer, Corey Dennis; a former La Luna Youth Arts member who returned to Townsville earlier this year to spend time with his family and decided to stay for the Circus Spectacular. So, if you’re looking for something different to do with the kids, check out La Luna Youth Arts for an array of regular workshop and productions.

They learn about the sound spiritual philosophy that martial arts is based on, which emphasises respect, selfconfidence, discipline, courage, kindness and helping others. We spent our first night in the swag tent village which resembled something off a Stargate movie set, with twin triangular tents adjoined by a deck in the middle with sink, bar fridge, table and chairs. One tent had a double bed and the other had two sets of bunks, and bedding could be hired from reception if you forgot to pack your own. They also hire camp kitchen packs. We met a lot of interesting travellers while cooking dinner in the camp kitchen and the kids were delighted with the abundance of wildlife on the walk back. Day two we were up early for Undara’s famous bush breakfast at Ringers Camp, an outdoor setting capturing the true essence of the Australian bush with tree stump seating, billy tea on the go or freshly brewing coffee, long prongs to toast your own bread over the campfire and a hot breakfast of eggs and bacon.
