27 welcome note Hi everyone and welcome to the 3rd edition of PakMag. Firstly we’d like to thank everyone for joining us at our Launch Party at Townsville Mini Golf last month and a big thanks to everyone who helped make it a success. Lots of fun was had by all and it was a nice opportunity to meet some of you and have a chat about the magazine and what you thought of it so far. A little about me...I’ve just started working with PakMag in Townsville although I have known Bree and the team for quite some time. I am a mum to a bundle of energy called Lachlan who starts Grade 1 this year. Townsville is my home town and after spending the last 10 years moving all over the place we decided to come home to give Lachlan some much needed stability and the chance to spend time with his cousins and grandparents. I am very excited to be joining the PakMag team and look forward to providing you with all the wonderful information about what’s happening for families right here on our doorstep. Enjoy this edition and don’t forget to tell everyone you read it in PakMag.

WIN GNomeo & Juliet tickets! Gnomeo & Juliet is the “greatest love story ever told…starring garden gnomes”. Shakespeare’s tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover in this new movie directed by Kelly Asbury (codirector of “Shrek 2”). It showcases both classic and original songs by Elton John, and features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors.

Cootharinga North Queensland has recently become an approved Early Intervention Service Provider which means that local families with young children now have greater access to a range of services. It also means, if they are eligible, that they can purchase these services through the use of the government’s Helping Children with Autism funding. This funding is available for children under the age of 7 who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder before their 6th birthday. The funding is up to $12000. For children who do not have funding there are other alternatives including Medicare rebates and private health fund rebates. Internet safety Story thanks to Shannon du Plessis

Like many working parents, I spend a great deal of my time at a desk in front of a computer, both at home and at the office. As a consequence we are influencing our young children who sit on our laps, tug at our leg and generally want to do just what Mummy or Daddy is doing. Whether your child is a toddler or a teenager, computers and the internet are going to be present in their lives for years to come so it’s important to make children “net savvy” from a young age. The internet allows anyone, of any age, to access all kinds of useful services but it’s also a portal for violent, offensive and sexually explicit material that you would not want any child to see. To help families create a safe online environment, the Australian Government assisted in establishing Cybersmart. The Cybersmart (www. cybersmart.gov.au) site is a national cyber safety education program managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Cybersmart enables children, parents, carers, teachers and library staff to manage online risks, so their experiences are safe and positive. It offers a wealth of information and resources about cyber safety issues for parents.

Macaroni Necklaces: Children love threading activities and they also love to wear their creations. Macaroni necklaces fulfil both of these criteria.

What you need: • Paper bags • 1 litre of white vinegar • Ziplock freezer bags • Food colouring in your desired colours • 500 grams of uncooked pasta (Penne or similar works best) Pour ¼ cup of vinegar and food colouring into a ziplock freezer bag. And it has to be done at the end of the day when everyone’s tired, hungry and busy so I went looking for helpful hints to keep our house in order. Here’s what I found:

Make sure the bag is zipped. Keep turning the bag over to evenly coat the pasta. Once this is done pour it out onto the paper bags and let it dry overnight (it may take a couple of days to dry depending on the weather). Use a separate ziplock bag for each colour that you want to make. Once the pasta is dry you can use it to make necklaces or other craft.

Tips: • Use different types of pasta • Can also be used for a collage picture

[1] Develop an after school routine and stick to it. When it comes to homework, some children work better with play time first, others by getting homework out of the way before play.

• Can be stored in an airtight container for up to for 3 months

[2] Children need fuel to think so include snack time before homework.

household items for a funky look eg. patty pan papers or bottle top lids

• Uncooked pasta can be a choking hazard so please supervise children • When making the pasta into a necklace you can also use other with a hole in the middle.

[3] If your teacher sets regular homework tasks, e.g. Monday spelling, Tuesday writing, etc, draw up a simple calendar for the week as a visual reminder for yourself and your child. [4] Be accessible to your children if they need help. Show an interest but be careful not to take over. Give guidance, not the answers! [5] Dedicate a regular space for homework away from the TV and other distractions. [6] Be familiar with your teacher’s homework policy, including how long they expect set homework should take each day. And, importantly, if your child (or you!) is struggling to keep up, talk to the teacher sooner rather than later about your problems. Good Luck…I’m off to learn some new words. Glenn “Minty” Mintern
