NEWS COMMUNITY FITNESS CENTER

FALL 2019

Staff Spotlight: Ron Nota How long have you worked for Palatine Park District?

I have worked at the Park District 5 years.

What do you do to stay active? My goal is to walk 4-6 miles a day at least 5 times a week, also I play golf. You've got to keep moving!

What do you want members to know about the Fitness Center? The fitness center is an amazing value. You can be a member for less than $3.00/week! All fitness levels are welcome!

Interesting fun fact? Welcome to the Community Fitness Center newsletter!

I produced a television commercial with Michael Jordan. Ironically it took 23 takes. That's a wrap!

The newsletter includes Community Fitness Center news, equipment updates, special events, healthy recipes, fitness tips, and news about our staff and members.

Updates & News • On Friday, June 21, Fitness Center members celebrated the first day of summer with summery tunes and a yogurt bar. • In October, be ready to cast your vote for which Fitness Center Staff has the best carved pumpkin. Anyone who casts a vote will be entered into a raffle for a prize. • Mark your calendar for our annual Fitness Center Open House on Saturday, December 14. PERSONAL TRAINER TIP OF THE MONTH! JODY NIEMAN Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness, Schwinn Cycling, and Turbo Kick Instructor You may love to exercise, and have gotten into a fitness routine that got you awesome results, but all of a sudden you hit the dreaded fitness plateau, feeling discouraged both mentally and physically. You might feel as if you should throw in the towel completely. Maybe you’re not reaching your fitness goals, like becoming a faster runner or increasing stamina for a long distance race. It could be time to mix up your fitness routine, take a new class, hire a personal trainer, or try something you never thought you could do. Mixing up your fitness routine can make you both physically and mentally stronger. Exercise both your body and your brain, and try these three fitness tips and break the dreaded fitness plateau.

Take a New Class Try a Turbo Kick, Cycling, or 360 Toning class, even if you think you will not be good at it. Do something out of your comfort zone. Utilizing a variety of exercise types forces your body to use different muscles and works you in new ways, resulting in more muscle gains. Extra Bonus—you may find something you really like that you never thought you would.

Vary Intensity and Weight Challenge your body by using heavier weights and slowing down, or speeding up while using lighter weights. This varied intensity and weight can have a tremendous positive effect of muscle motion and performance.

Take Adequate Rest Days Listen to your body. It is ok to take a rest day. If your body doesn’t have time to rest and rejuvenate your body, energy, and mental stamina will be depleted rather than increased. So rest up! Stay strong both mentally and physically. I teach and train in all three facilities Birchwood, Community Center, and Harper. Feel free to track me down for more fitness tricks and tips. I would love to meet each and every one of you. Happy exercising.

Member Spotlight: Libby Buchanan I have been a member of the Palatine Community Fitness Center since 2015. Believe it or not, I think it’s the best deal around (next to the Costco rotisserie chicken). The staff is outstanding—cheerful and always happy to help all while keeping the Center in tip-top shape. I don’t think I’ve ever been there without seeing them vacuuming, cleaning the glass, and polishing the equipment. I am, by nature, a very active person and would like to stay that way. I hike, ski, scuba dive, and have recently taken up boxing, so the Center is important to me. A year ago, at the age of 67, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which is another incentive to work out and stay fit. I can’t beat it, but I can make sure it knows it’s been in a fight. I am very grateful to have the center and the wonderful staff available so close to my home.

The Best Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) • 1/2 cup honey or pure maple syrup • 1/4 cup milk (dairy, almond, etc.) • 2 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice OR 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon allspice, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon cloves • 1 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (mini chocolate chips)

3. Add the pumpkin, honey or pure maple syrup, and milk to the bowl. Whisk to combine. Whisk in the eggs and vanilla extract. 4.
