DIRECTOR’S NOTES — from Kevin Wiczer Ever since I listened to the soundtrack, I have loved Something Rotten! After I had the privilege to see it performed at the Marriott in Lincolnshire, I fell in love with the show all over again. It is very rare for me to watch a show where I’m constantly laughing and engaged the entire time. I was drawn in the moment the show began to the moment it ended. I knew that I would jump at the opportunity to direct it, and when J. Spencer Greene asked, if I would be onboard, I jumped! A director rarely gets the opportunity to be one of the first to work on a certain project. Normally, you get to direct something after it’s been available for quite some time. However, with Something Rotten!, this show has only performed in Illinois twice. The first was the national tour, and the second was the Marriott production. We are number three, and the first non-equity theatre, which is not only exciting, but there’s also a sense of duty. With a show where not very many people have had the opportunity to see the musical yet, you want to do right by the show and the writers who created it. Collaborating with this cast has been a dream, and we hope you love the show as much as we love sharing it with you!! ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES — from J. Spencer Greene To quote Shakespeare, “pffft,” or something like that. He can be silly. When I became aware of this show, I knew that Theatre Nebula, myself, Kevin Wiczer, Bryan McCaffrey, and Kristine Burdi were silly enough to do this show. I first brought these three colleagues together to form what became the monster trio on 2019’s Spring Awakening. Something Rotten! is definitely a 180 degree opposite show, and we all needed some silliness back in our lives. With the seriousness COVID caused over the last 18 months in all our lives, it is perfect for us to bring this hilarious escape to everyone, albeit after the delay due to the aforementioned shutdown of live theatre and so many other businesses. Our production team has pulled together the best talent on and behind the stage to create this huge production for our loyal theatergoers. (At last count, it contains at least 87 Shakespearean costumes, a rotating turntable, rotating buildings, a gliding stage in the park, over 50 references to other musicals, etc.) I give a tremendous thank you to everyone who brought this all together in our re-mount after we were forced to close on our final dress rehearsal in March of 2020 before we could open. We knew you could do it and we couldn’t be more proud. As those of you who have worked with Theatre Nebula know, we all work together as equals- no divas, and always become a huge family. Everyone has worked so hard on this exhausting and difficult show without any complaining. As I worked on the scenery, I would often see a stray actor or two away in some little corner of the theatre working out a tap sequence, or dance section. The dedication was awesome to behold. I send out love to everyone and thank you for taking this ride with me and Theatre Nebula. I dedicate this silliness to my parents, who both had always been silly and had supported me and my love for theatre throughout my whole life. A special thank you to all the donors who have contributed to help us bring this production back to the community after the losses the closure forced.
