Hello, sunshine! Spring has arrived and here we are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Annual spring events that we look forward to have either been cancelled or postponed; however, we can still go outside and appreciate the sights and sounds of beautiful Steveston village. Cherry trees are blooming, birds are chirping, and there appears to be a deepened sense of connection as people exchange smiles and warm greetings when they are out walking. On the cover is Darryl Falk, a Steveston fisherman since 1989 on his boat the Pacific Searcher. He sells salmon and tuna at Fisherman’s Wharf. Walk east to the next wharf and you will find Kari House, a waterfront restaurant that serves up home-style Malaysian food such as satay skewers and Kari Laksa noodle soup. Kari House:
Home-style Malaysian Food Story by Sarah Gordon

The small tropical country of Malaysia is known for its white sandy beaches and rainforests. It is also known for its cuisine featuring subtle flavours and complex spices with influences from other Asian countries including China, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.
While a trip overseas would be wonderful, there is no need to travel further than Bayview Street in Steveston village where you can experience these tantalizing tastes. Sandy Chong and her family own and operate Kari House restaurant. Her two brothers David Chong and Jacky Chong are the chefs, her mother Siew Kee Cheng assists with cutting all of the vegetables, her sister-in-law Annie Tan helps in the kitchen and out front, and Sandy manages operations. Sandy’s father, Hing Chong, was Kari House’s original chef and was well-loved by their customers. A great loss for both the family and Kari House, Hing passed away last year.

In 1988 the Chong family left Penang, Malaysia and immigrated to Canada. They briefly lived in Montreal, but found the climate too cold so they headed west to British Columbia. Hing had operated a restaurant in Malaysia. Although he did not formally train as a chef, he was a gifted cook and enjoyed preparing food for his family and friends. Sandy says, “Our family would come out to Steveston on weekends; we loved the cozy little town. My father saw a sign for a new commercial development that was to be built called Riversong. Our business was the first to sign a lease and move in. We chose the storefront with a waterfront view and designed the restaurant from a shell.” She adds, “We are so glad to bring and share home-style cooking in our family-run restaurant with our Steveston neighbours. When we started the business 16 years ago our goal was to introduce an authentic Malaysian flavour, but serve it in a Canadian way with fresh local produce and boneless, skinless meat.” “My father learned how to adapt his recipes to restaurant size quantities. He had a lot of good secret recipes, and according to our loyal

customers the following three are unbeatable: our satay, curry, and sambal chili sauces,” says Sandy.
“I would like the usual,” is a request Sandy frequently hears.

As many as eighty percent of Kari House’s customers are locals, with some dining at the restaurant two to three times a week. They do not require a menu to order, as they know their favourites and stay with the tried and true. A few of the popular dishes include the warm Gado Gado salad (featuring assorted vegetables with peanut dressing), Malay Halia (chicken stir fried in ginger sauce) and Kari Rendang

(chicken, prawn or fish in a spicy coconut milk curry). If you are not a fan of spicy food Sandy recommends Kari Hijau (chicken, beef or pork in Thai green coconut milk curry). Dishes can be modified according to preferred spice levels. In addition to many other items on the extensive menu, Kari House offers vegetarian options along with some gluten free selections.

The Chong family appreciates the small and original businesses that make Steveston a special community. They know all of the surrounding merchants who support each other.
Sandy says, “We have many people wanting to order the sambal chili sauce and curry sauce to take home after eating it here. Some even ask if we will consider offering cooking classes.”
With a smile, Sandy concludes, “I feel warm and supported; many of our customers have become friends. I know their names and their stories. I've been invited to their homes for dinner. I am given souvenirs after they return from holidays. Many choose to celebrate special events with their families and friends at our place, even if they already dine here regularly. Now their families and friends have also become Kari House customers.”
The menu features three desserts including Bubur Cha-Cha (bananas, sweet potatoes, taro root, sago pearls cooked in coconut milk and served warm), as well as Pisang Goreng (deep fried bananas with ice cream) and Mango Sticky Rice (sweet sticky rice, fresh mango and coconut milk).
Operating a business in the neighbourhood where the Chong family lives is very rewarding. Long time Kari House customers have had the pleasure of seeing Sandy’s nieces and nephews grow from babies to teenagers as they have spent many hours at the family restaurant.
Listening to customer’s feedback is very important. Sandy remarks, “I am grateful when clients share their opinions and experiences. If it's a good dish then we'll keep it, if not, we'll try to make adjustments. I always believe that people only mention or point something out when they care.”

First Avenue is like no other street in Steveston village; it is lined with many unique businesses that you won’t find elsewhere. Serendipity’s is one of these shops and has been a part of the community since 1995. The definition of “serendipity” is making fortunate and happy discoveries by chance, usually while searching for something else.
This is the case when you step inside this metaphysical gift shop. The first thing to greet you is the smell of fragrant candles, aromatherapy oil and incense. You will experience a warm welcome from the staff, and as you browse the shop you will uncover an array of hand-selected items that have been curated with care.
"Serendipity’s is a calming and peaceful sanctuary for your soul," says store manager Adrienne Andersen. Adrienne comments, “The store is a safe space to explore different perspectives of the universe, ask questions, play with energies and chill out. Many regular customers come in on their work breaks to decompress and feel uplifted.” 14

What makes Serendipity’s special? Owner Neville Kim Sing says, “It is a combination of the energy, the atmosphere, the calm, the peaceful smell, and the compassionate and dedicated staff.” Neville purchased the established business in 2004 with a partner and eventually took over as director/owner in 2009. The shop has relocated three times in the village, twice in the same block of Second Avenue. He entrusts the day-to-day operations to Adrienne, assistant manager Leigh Betteridge
and the other staff, however Neville makes regular visits to the shop and is involved in sourcing and ordering products, acting as the resident handyman and facilitating the monthly full moon meditations. As well, Neville is a master energy healer.
Customers come from across the Lower Mainland to visit Richmond’s only metaphysical store.

The front of the shop is a retail space. There are many treasures to be found such as crystals, books, stones and gems, salt lamps, Himalayan bath salts, yoga cushions, eye pillows, sleep masks, singing bowls, candles, incense, sage, sacred gem jewellery, pendulums, tarot and oracle cards. Handmade healing gemstone bracelets are created in house. Special requests can be made, and resizing and repairs to stretchy cord gem bracelets are also offered. Serendipity’s has recently started carrying Pyrrha talisman necklaces cast from roughhewn, antique seals. Each necklace is handcrafted in Pyrrha’s Vancouver studio.

Celebrities and style icons have embraced this line that has received international attention. Serendipity’s will place a special order if the necklace you are looking for is not carried. In addition to the retail space, the large back room is used for group meditations, women’s new moon circles, full moon meditations, and workshops held in collaboration with skilled teachers and intuitive readers. Serendipity’s offers intuitive development courses so people can enhance their own skills and gifts. Upcoming events include a hypnosis workshop in April and tarot card workshop in May. ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Someone told me that quercetin can kill the novel corona virus (COVID-19), is this true? It is far too risky to rely on quercetin for that purpose at this point. Very few studies provide evidence in support of quercetin’s inhibitory action on Influenza A Viruses (i.e., the viruses that cause the typical flu), let alone provide concrete evidence that it will have an effect on the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. However, there is benefit in adding quercetin to your regular regiment during periods of high infection rates. Quercetin is a potent antioxidant that is meant to combat free radical damage in the body. Free radicals are harmful substances that come about as a result of oxidative stress due mainly to environment exposure (e.g., UV radiation, cosmetics, drugs, foods/additives, workplace chemicals, pesticides) and infections. Quercetin is believed to effectively boost immunity, with a focus on respiratory health, hence regular dosing could assist in defense against respiratory infections in general. AOR’s “Quercetin” is a pure high dose formulation of quercetin. Alternatively, Sisu’s “ESTER-C SUPREME” contains buffered, esterified vitamin C, along with arabinogalactan (from larch bark), quercetin (from fruit), and multianthocyanidin (from berries and other fruits). Quercetin in Canada is mostly derived from food sources, so they can generally be safely incorporated into your whole body health plan. Adequate dosing is crucial. Be sure to consult your physician for a professional diagnosis and consult your integrative pharmacists at Cloverdale Pharmasave and Pharmasave Steveston Village before self-medicating.
