Her smiling face can be seen on a bus shelter poster at Moncton Street and No. 1 Road. You’ll also see her running on the dyke or paddling her kayak on the Fraser River. This longtime resident is the past chair of the Steveston Salmon Festival and was a director with the Steveston Community Society. Barb helped make the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market a growing concern, and she has led many running clinics for marathons and Vancouver Sun Run training. If you’re looking for someone who is helpful and active, Barb’s your gal. She’s teaching her family the value of community. Her three teenagers attend local schools and work in the village. Barb encourages them to walk as she walks or runs virtually everywhere! The local RE/MAX office is just a few blocks from her home. If you walk alongside her, you’ll soon find that she knows half the people who pass by, and she always offers a friendly word or wave. If you see Barb, be sure to say hi! 2

Publisher's Note
Here we are in the warm sunshine of August! This has been a summer like no other, filled with uncertainty as we continue to keep our guard up during the pandemic. We are so proud of our local businesses; over the last five months they have pivoted in new directions, and have worked tirelessly to figure out how to operate safely for their customers and staff. Following the recommendation that British Columbians stay close to home, Steveston is bustling with local tourists taking staycations. Some of our favourite summer and fall events will not take place this year including the Steveston Beer Fest, the Grand Prix of Art, Trick or Treat in Steveston Village, Girls’ Night Out, and Christmas in Steveston Village. Tourism Richmond’s Steveston Visitor Centre remains closed. On the cover, local mother and realtor Barb Nimchuk enjoys paddling in her kayak to take in the natural beauty of Steveston. Read more on page 2.
We are excited to feature the Steveston Japanese Language School as they celebrate their 60th year! Read about their contributions to help Japanese language instruction and culture flourish. We also introduce you to Gina Fernandez, owner of Enable Occupational Therapy. Gina has returned to her hometown to create unique and innovative OT treatment programs for all members of the community. Since March, a number of new businesses have opened. We welcome Hoke Poke (formerly Boba Boy), Kenny Chiu M.P. for StevestonRichmond East, Kun’s Omakase Bar and Shelf. Baan Lao, Sweet Surrender Gelato and Veggie Pho are set to open soon. Steveston merchants are ready to welcome you back. They thank you for following their new operating protocol and as always, appreciate your loyal support. Stay safe. We will get through this together.

Steveston Japanese Language School Celebrates its 60th Anniversary Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos submitted
Japanese language studies in Steveston date back to the late 1800s when thousands of Japanese men arrived to make a living building fishing boats and fishing for the numerous salmon canneries that lined the Fraser River. They lived in bunkhouses and retained their culture and language. In the early 1900s, women and children followed them from Japan to settle in Steveston. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Japanese community was segregated. Japanese fishermen faced anti-Asian sentiment from Europeans who feared for their jobs. Between 1906 and 1907 Japanese language education began at the Japanese Hospital and Christian Church as there was a requirement that one must be a property owner in order for children to attend public school. The first Japanese school was built in 1909 on 6
the east side of No. 1 Road north of Chatham Street beside the Japanese Fisherman’s Benevolent Society, which was the hospital’s administration building. Although the school building no longer stands, the neighbouring Japanese Fishermen’s Benevolent Society was relocated in 2010 and has been preserved as a historic site. It is located behind the Steveston Museum and Post Office on Moncton Street and First Avenue. “The Japanese Language School educated young children, with an increasing emphasis on English. Eventually, the full B.C. curriculum was adopted and Japanese classes were taught after school.” (Steveston Historical Society) During the Second World War, the school closed due to the relocation and internment of Japanese Canadians. instruction returned in 1949 when the Richmond Japanese Language School began operating out of the Steveston Buddhist Temple.
In September 1960, the new Steveston Japanese Language School commenced teaching Japanese at the Steveston Community Centre.
The school’s mission is to promote the understanding of Japanese language and culture to all Canadians. Tomoko Suzuki’s students know her as Suzuki Sensei (teacher). She joined the school in 2009 as a teacher and became the principal in 2014.
The Richmond Japanese Language School merged with the Steveston Japanese Language School in June 1975. Later that year the school was granted non-profit society status by the B.C. government to become the Steveston Japanese Language School Society. In September 1992, the school moved to the newly constructed Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, behind the Steveston Community Centre where it continues to reside. August - September 2020

She continues to teach high school students and adult classes. Nine teachers, including Tomoko, teach part-time. The school is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday with a wide range of classes offered for preschoolers, children, and adults. This past year 262 students were enrolled. Students come from Delta, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, and White Rock. Some students speak Japanese at home, while others are new to the language. Some have lived in Japan, others have travelled there, and some have another connection and are eager to learn the language. Like all places where people gather, Steveston Japanese Language School closed with the arrival of the pandemic in March 2020. In-person learning ceased and the instructors adapted their way of teaching. There was a learning curve involved in transitioning to online education. Tomoko says, “It has been challenging. We have never taught this way before.”
other Japanese foods were sold. Few Japanese restaurants or shops existed locally at the time, and Stevestonites enjoyed eating and socializing at the bazaar. In 2002, the large event was cancelled due to lack of volunteers. In 2004, the Steveston Japanese Language School set up a booth for the first time in the Cultural Centre during the Steveston Salmon Festival. The room was decorated in a Tanabata festival theme, which is a very popular event in Japan. Origami, calligraphy, and craft booths were provided for children along with mini Japanese lessons for adults. Over the years the
“We wanted to provide for our students. We didn’t want them to stop learning.” Tomoko Suzuki Steveston Japanese Language School operates with the assistance of seven volunteer board members who oversee fundraising and donations. The school’s major fundraiser was an annual bazaar that was held every spring, beginning in 1961. This event took over the entire Steveston Community Centre. A variety show featured singers, dancers, and musicians. Udon and 8

school has added even more popular activities such as kimono dressing and papermaking. Brenda Ohara, chair of the board mentions, “Today, the school holds smaller fundraisers throughout the school year, such as selling gyoza (provided by Cana-Ya Gyoza), waffles at Christmas (provided by Damien's Belgian Waffles), and mochi. We hold bake sales, sell Japanese treats at our annual New Year’s parties, and sell hot dogs and drinks at our annual Sports Day which are kindly donated by PriceSmart Foods in Richmond.” She adds, “We have also partnered with G&F Financial Group’s West Richmond Branch. They donate $25 to the school for every successful referral. However, none of these fundraisers raise as much money as our bazaars did. We recently added a donation page to our website, so we can now ask for donations to support our programs and include a link to that page. Because the school is a registered charity, donors will receive an income tax receipt.” Brenda remarks, “The only government funding that we have received during my eight-year tenure on the board was the Multiculturalism Grant from B.C. in 2017. We applied and received funding for our photo booth set-up, which we have used at events such as the Salmon Festival to augment our kimono-dressing offering and the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre that was hosted by the school in 2017.” In 2018, the school received funding from G&F Financial Group Foundation to support their Learning with iPads project. G&F Financial Group’s West Richmond Branch also supports the school by donating to its scholarship fund. The school awards up to three $350 scholarships for qualified past students of the school.
August - September 2020
Tomoko points out, “We don’t only teach Japanese language and culture, we contribute to the community as well.” “The history of the school and continuing involvement in local communities are things to be recognized and remembered. For instance, the school was an active fundraiser for the building of the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. More recently, in 2017, the school donated 100 Japanese books to Richmond Public Library; the school also supported the Nikkei Memorial Project with a donation. At certain times of the year, students at the school share an activity with the Japanese seniors at the Cultural Centre,” says Brenda. Students are encouraged to make direct connections with Japan. Every September Japanese university students visit the school for a day. Each Christmas students send cards to children in Japan who are victims of natural disasters; this gives them a chance to communicate with kids their own age.

Tomoko comments, “Due to COVID19, we won't be planning any large gatherings. We wish to mark the school's 60th anniversary by recognizing the school's community involvement and contribution over the past 60 years by sharing stories with our school community.” Brenda concludes, “This Steveston Insider story helps us celebrate the school. Of course, the sustainability of the school would not have been possible without the support of its past and present students, the parents, volunteers, and staff, local businesses, and the community at large. To them, we say thank you!” To register for the 2020-2021 school year, visit www.sjls.ca or contact ngakko@telus.net. Classes begin on September 8. ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER What are good supplements to take for my allergies?
Twenty five percent of Canadians have allergic rhinitis, and ten percent have asthma (up to 25% of kids). It is important to have allergy symptoms assessed by a physician, especially during COVID-19, but there are many viable integrative options to treat seasonal allergies or hay fever once a diagnosis is reached. A nasal gel such as Secaris or Rhinaris can be used to coat your nasal passage after clearing your nose; the layer of gel helps to trap allergens before they stimulate the receptors that trigger a sneeze or mucous production. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, quercetin, and citrus bioflavonoids can act as natural antihistamines. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (“NAC”) can support the body’s glutathione (antioxidant) production. In some people, digestive enzymes such as bromelain and papain can alleviate allergy symptoms as well. These natural supplements can be found on their own, or in some effective combinations, such as D-Hist/D-Hist Jr. by Ortho Molecular Products, Vitamin C8 by New Roots Herbal, and Ester-C Supreme by Sisu.

Enable Occupational Therapy:
Stevestonite Returns to Help Her Community Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos submitted
Occupational Therapist and Clinical Director Gina Fernandez is a pro at multitasking; she has been juggling her three Enable Occupational Therapy clinics during the pandemic while simultaneously being a new mother (her baby was born in mid-April). As a Registered Occupational Therapist, Gina performs home assessments, falls risk assessments, cognitive assessments, wheelchair assessments, and prescribes exercises and creates treatment programs for all members of the community. She has worked in both the public and private sectors with adults and children. Gina worked in a rural child development centre in Squamish, as well as various acute care settings throughout the Fraser Health Authority, and with the Early Supported Discharge Team at Richmond Hospital providing education and rehabilitation to adults with strokes and brain injuries. Gina founded Enable OT in 2014 after leaving her position at the Palliative Care and Oncology units at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Her position as Palliative Care and Oncology OT was to be eliminated and she was informed 26
she would be working on a regular hospital unit instead. Aware of gaps in the public health care system, Gina decided to open a private rehabilitation company to provide services to individuals on waitlists and to assist people who received limited services publicly including children, and adults with strokes, brain injuries or Parkinson’s disease.
Her goal was to provide treatment to adults and children in the community in a unique and innovative manner outside of the clinic walls which includes kayaking, soccer, rock climbing, dance, and much more.

August - September 2020
Gina says, “We work with clients on physical, cognitive, and emotional skills. However, most individuals become bored with working on these skills inside a clinic setting, and children are often tired of being brought to such therapy sessions. For this reason, we decided to take it outdoors and the children love it! Interestingly enough, these outdoor sessions have the best clinical effectiveness, according to evidence-based research.” Enable OT’s first location was a shared space with Steveston’s Past Tense Massage Therapy. Gina soon discovered she had a thriving business and it was time to expand. The clinic eventually moved to First Avenue above the Balloon Place, after temporarily sharing a bigger space with former Chatham Speech and Language Services. The Enable OT team consists of three occupational therapists, four rehabilitation assistants, two lifeguards, and one expressive arts therapist. Gina grew up in West Richmond and attended Hugh Boyd Secondary. She did not envision returning to her hometown, however, she says, “I am back upon request!” In 2019, Gina opened satellite locations in Kerrisdale and Port Moody. People had heard about Enable OT and Gina realized there was an opportunity to service these communities so families in these areas did not have to travel to Steveston.
The occupational therapists collaborate with clinicians in the three communities where the clinics are located. The Kerrisdale office is conveniently paired with a child counsellor’s office. Gina finds it extremely convenient to refer her clients to a neighbouring clinician. Some clients have special needs such as anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, or other mental health concerns. Gina is on the Registered Autism Service Providers (RASP) list for children. Children with autism or anxiety can find big groups overwhelming. Basketball camps are an informal way to work on social skills and learn to take turns and share a space. These small groups are for kids as young as five years old to teenagers.

“The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with the clients and watching them grow and progress.” Gina Fernandez Swim camps are an excellent outlet for kids with sensory and behavioural challenges. The lessons are taught by Enable OT’s lifeguards and are tailored to the way students learn. Children can work towards earning their swimming levels and Bronze Cross lifeguard certification.
Unfortunately, this program is temporarily on hold during COVID-19. Gina discovered a clinic space was available across the street from Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park and thought it was a perfect opportunity to maximize another facet of their occupational therapy services. Enable OT’s kayaking program allows clients to develop their upper body, improve endurance and balance, and also cultivate social skills. In Steveston, occupational therapy sessions for youth include basketball camps, soccer, golf at West Richmond’s Pitch and Putt, biking, and scavenger hunts. In addition, Enable OT hosts camps to develop fine motor skills such as printing and cutting with scissors. Often, the talented and skilled rehabilitation assistants see some of the young clients every week, as it may not be necessary to see an OT weekly. Gina is fortunate to have a team of assistants comprised of volunteer firefighters, former collegiate level basketball coaches, artists who own and operate their own cupcake decorating company, and individuals who are fluent in sign language.

injuries. Therapists should have advanced training in rehabilitation techniques related to Parkinson's disease if they are working with these clients.
In addition to their work with children, the Enable OT team also works with adults. Many people are not aware that OT’s work with people living with Parkinson’s disease, strokes, or brain
These OT sessions may include assessment of physical, social, cognitive, and emotional factors that affect an individual's functioning, including participation in daily activities, and provision of equipment to aid with independence in mobility and daily tasks, such as meal management, leisure, productivity, and self-care. Treatment modalities used by the clinicians include, but are not limited to dance, yoga and mindfulness, boxing, and PWR! Exercise. Gina has completed intensive PWR! Training, allowing her to provide exercise-based treatment to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. This program is based on the principle of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change). Research studies have shown that participation in the program is associated with reduced symptoms and improved physical and cognitive functioning. Parkinson's patients who participate in dancebased interventions have shown improvements in the areas of emotional well being and cognition, in addition to balance, mobility, and the ability to perform activities of daily living. Prior to being an OT, Gina was a professional dancer. She is passionate about incorporating music and movement into her therapy sessions. She teaches Bollywood dance for beginners at various dance studios throughout B.C. When she teaches dance in therapy sessions caregivers also enjoy participating.

Partnering with other Steveston businesses is important to Gina. Enable OT hosts basketball camps with neighbouring company Advantage Speech-Language Pathology. Enable OT’s team enjoyed working with Tony Dales when he was operating his kayaking business, and he was instrumental in training the clinicians on water safety skills. Thinking creatively, last year Gina approached Paradigm Shift Martial Arts and now uses their studio to hold dance classes and boxing training for Parkinson’s patients.
(Port Moody remains closed for now) and all of the necessary health guidelines are being followed. Some alterations have had to be made involving social interaction such as the cessation of sharing of materials, however, applying their creative OT skills, the team is finding ways to adapt and deliver their sessions.
Like many businesses, Enable OT had to close its doors at the height of the pandemic. Steveston and Kerrisdale have now reopened

THE RICHMOND HOSPITAL/HEALTHCARE AUXILIARY
THRIFT SHOP
YOUR FAVOURITE THRIFT STORE IS REOPENING! Little did we know when the Thrift Shop shut down for renovations in February that the world would also take a break. The good news is that renovations to the inside of the Thrift Shop continued and our volunteers have worked hard to put everything back together with a fresh look. In re-opening, the health and safety of our volunteers and customers is paramount as we follow Worksafe BC guidelines. The number of people in the shop will be limited, face masks and sanitizers will be mandatory, entry is by the side door and exit by the front door, no pets, donation of goods will be quarantined in a bin outside for 72 hours before entering the shop. We know our loyal customers have missed us and our volunteers have missed them. We can’t wait to get back to our ability to support healthcare in our community.
Volunteers needed and welcomed. Applications may be picked up at the Thrift Shop.
