Publisher's Note Hello, August! Here we are in mid-summer, many people’s favourite season for relaxing and getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D. There is no better place to unwind than picturesque Steveston Village. So far, this summer is feeling much more normal; we have avoided a heatwave, and people are cautiously unmasking when safe to do so while observing COVID protocols. Challenges remain: businesses are struggling to find workers, and inflation is at an all-time high; merchants appreciate your continued support as they navigate operating at full capacity again. The reimagined 75th annual Steveston Salmon Festival was a creative way to safely ease back into large events. Next up are Bike to Shop Week, the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, Richmond Maritime Festival, Grand Prix of Art, and Culture Days. The Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market has four markets left this summer. Tourism Richmond’s free Discover Shuttle operates on weekends and statutory holidays through September 5 to bring people to the village. Britannia Shipyards NHS offers a voyage aboard the Gikumi 1954 workboat. Steveston Folk Guild brings back live music to Britannia Shipyards monthly. Pick up some takeout and eat at one of the colourful pop-up picnic tables located at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Town Square Park and Britannia Shipyards. The Steveston Merchants Association is busy planning our community’s favourite fall events. We can look forward to the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treating in the Village, Girls’ Night Out, the Holiday Window Contest,

Santa’s arrival by boat, horse carriage rides, the Christmas Car Cruise, and much more as the SMA partners with Tourism Richmond and the City for ‘Winter in the Village.’ Read how Chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng of Baan Lao Fine Thai Cuisine is helping to further elevate Steveston’s profile as a tourist and foodie destination! Stepin Out has moved across the street, and Moncton Dental has a new name and location. Cucina Piccola has closed as the owner retired; watch for a new restaurant in that location. Erin Moran has started a new clinic called Steveston Health Collective that will open soon at Chatham Street and 5th Avenue. Stroll the boardwalk, watch the fishing boats, check out the new murals, eat at one of Steveston’s many restaurants and cafes, shop the unique shops, and enjoy the rest of summer. Dining at Baan Lao Fine Thai Cuisine is more than dinner; it is an experience. Each meal is an exquisite culinary journey, intricately prepared using fresh, organic ingredients, beautifully layered flavours, white-glove service, dramatic presentations, and lovely surprises. Chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng opened her waterfront restaurant on Bayview Street in February 2021; in the short time Baan Lao (which means “our home” in Thai) has been open, it has garnered impressive accolades. In 2021 and 2022, Vancouver Golden Plates awarded Baan Lao Best Restaurant Overall, Best Fine Dining Restaurant, Best Thai Restaurant, Best Vancouver Hidden Gem, Best New Restaurant and Most Romantic Restaurant. In addition, Chef Nutcha was named Best Chef both years. This year, Baan Lao was awarded #79 on the prestigious Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list and #14 on its Canada’s Best New Restaurants list, further elevating Steveston’s profile as a tourist and foodie destination. 8
Guests are treated like royalty as they enjoy award-winning dishes and take in a beautiful view of the Fraser River. As a former registered nurse and cancer researcher, Chef Nutcha respects the impact food, and food sources can have on health and wellness. Everything is made with careful attention using pure, fresh, organic ingredients and whole foods. Chef Nutcha realized her dream of becoming a professional chef by taking private cooking courses with Chef Chumpol Jangprai, the Iron Chef of Thailand and the only two Michelin star Thai chef in the world. She continued her training under Chef Vichit Mukura, who served the Thai Royal family, and now has his own restaurant that is celebrated with a coveted Michelin star. She then returned to Steveston, and Baan Lao Fine Thai Cuisine was born.

The media have noted her commitment to providing a memorable dining experience. Mia Stainsby, restaurant critic for the Vancouver Sun and The Province, comments, “Baan Lao is the kind of place Michelin inspectors love to anoint with stars. I don’t know of any other Thai restaurant in North America where the food is styled, ready for said inspectors should they one day stumble upon a country called Canada.” It is exciting to note that Michelin has recently announced it has expanded into the Canadian market, beginning with Toronto. Vancouver will be the next market for Michelin inspectors, and Baan Lao is hopeful to see a Michelin star awarded in Steveston. Baan Lao currently offers two menus: “A Taste of Baan Lao” and” From the Fields of Thailand to the Shores of Canada.” Both menus are beautifully prepared and presented in Royal Thai Cuisine style. Each dish is created

to the very exacting standards required by the Thai royal family; this includes using the highest quality of fresh organic ingredients and removing all pits, stones and bones.

“A Taste of Baan Lao” menu offers some of the most popular items from Chef Nutcha’s first Signature Dinner Experience menu (“Journey Throughout the Kingdom of Thailand”), including her Phat Thai and her Bplaa Salmon Sauce Khaaio Waan. Bplaa Salmon Sauce Khaaio Waan is a showstopper. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also decadently adorned with edible gold leaf and caviar — the green curry sauce has people wanting to lick the plate! Both these dishes have been so popular with guests that Chef Nutcha incorporated them into her “A Taste of Baan Lao” compilation menu. Also included are select items from her new Signature Dinner Experience menu, “From the Fields of Thailand to the Shores of Canada,” which launched in July 2022. This culinary experience chronicles Chef Nutcha’s journey from growing up in Thailand to building her life in Steveston. This menu includes protein sources commonly found in the countryside region of Issan, Thailand, where Chef Nutcha was raised living the farm-to-table experience. It features handroasted insects and organic water buffalo. Additionally, fresh lobster is flown in weekly from the Maritimes to complement her signature Phat Thai. “From the Fields of Thailand to the Shores of Canada” is available exclusively on Saturday evenings with limited seating. The highlight for many is the dessert, Wan Wan Kanom Hwan. Chef Nutcha spent months developing this magnificent, detailed dessert that evokes a

visual representation of the landscape from her rural upbringing and childhood experience.
Chef Nutcha says, “We are so grateful for the incredible support and encouragement we’ve received. Steveston is such a wonderful community to be part of.” She adds, “Many guests visit us from the Lower Mainland and every corner of British Columbia. We’ve had guests from Alberta – including some who flew in just to join us for dinner! Visitors from Ontario and other parts of Canada are quite common, and from a number of locations across the United States as well.” “While some people may have questioned our decision to launch a fine dining restaurant like Baan Lao in Steveston, we have remained steadfast that we would develop a following. We have been overwhelmed – and overjoyed – with the response.”

Realtor Wilson Chiu has given heartfelt Mother’s Day gifts over the years, but his present in 2021 was life-changing; to enable his mother to retire, he purchased her business, South Harbour Fish & Gift Shop. Deborah Chiu and her husband Wayne immigrated to Canada in 1987 from Hong Kong when Wilson and his younger brother Nelson were children. Upon arriving in Canada, Deborah worked at Canada Post, followed by a job at a seafood retail shop. In 1997 she opened South Harbour Fish & Gift Shop on No. 1 Road in Steveston. Deborah was the sole owner of the shop, while Wayne continued to work at his job as a computer programmer. 26
“We named the store South Harbour because the first house my parents purchased was in Steveston, and it’s where they still live happily today.” People often ask Wilson why he became a realtor. He explains, “The answer is fear. In my teens and early 20s, I feared working at my mom’s seafood shop for the rest of my life. Every day after school, I was there to close the store. During weekends and holidays, I helped out. After high school, no one would hire me, so I was there a few days a week; it felt like I was destined to be there forever.”

“Last Mother’s Day, I did the unthinkable. I purchased the business so mom could retire.” “Mom never took a day off; she worked seven days a week for as long as I can remember. She worked hard to raise Nelson and me and never asked for anything from us. After the store closed for the day, she was home cooking and cleaning. Inviting her to dinners at fancy restaurants or gifting her was always met with opposition, so it required effort and convincing to get her to go along with my plan.” Retired life agrees with Deborah. Every morning, she goes out to the cafes in Steveston with Wayne before he goes to work. On weekends, she takes care of her grandchildren so Wilson and his wife, Siny Yu, can take a break from their work. South Harbour Fish & Gift Shop mainly sells fresh local seafood, including cod, halibut, and salmon purchased whole and filleted on site. They also sell shellfish such as clams, mussels, oysters, and scallops. Frozen fish includes Alaskan black cod, Ahi tuna and Mahi Mahi from Hawaii, lobster tails from Nova Scotia, and sea bass from Chile.
In addition to fish, South Harbour has introduced frozen meat, including steaks; the most popular and requested is the Tomahawk Steak, a three to four-inch piece of rib eye. Bacon-wrapped scallops are one of Wilson’s favourites; he also enjoys barbequing Cornish game hens rotisserie style.
“As a small business, we like to support other local businesses.” South Harbour carries locally smoked salmon packaged in gift boxes and many locally canned shellfish. They make lovely gifts, and travellers like to purchase them to take home as a memory of our beautiful waterfront village. “The store hasn’t changed much from when it first opened. Besides adding frozen meat to our inventory, most of our stock remains the same since the demand is very consistent. The people of Steveston are looking for the freshest seafood they grew up with. We are always looking for new suppliers and new products to carry. ” Some customers have shopped at South Harbour since 1997 and come in once or twice weekly. Others have moved away but will visit the store when they are in the area. Wilson says, “Building a loyal customer base is a neverending process.”

“Throughout the years, our customer service has been excellent. Our customers know what to expect from our quality products, and cleanliness is our store policy.” Wilson’s cousin Johnny Lee runs day-to-day operations, and Wilson visits the shop to check in and discuss ways to make improvements.
Like the first settlers and the Japanese settlers, my family were immigrants looking for a place to call home. We found it in Steveston and have made our contributions over the years. One day, when Johnny’s or my sons (daughters-in-law are welcome too!) take over the store, this familyrun business will continue to serve and pop into people’s minds when they think of Steveston.”
When asked about the logistics of owning the store and being a realtor, Wilson replies, “Johnny knows the ins and outs of the business well, and I also have roughly ten years of experience working at South Harbour. It’s important to be a leader with lots of smiles. I’m open to ideas and never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do. I treat employees and customers with respect and share knowledge with them. With those qualities in place, managing two businesses is not as difficult as one might think.”
