Dunbar Village Business Association Message from DVBA President, Vicki Bell Welcome to the Spring edition of Dunbar Life. Sunny days are on the way! Blossoming cherry trees line Dunbar’s streets and the brightly coloured spring street banners are up! Warmer weather inspires us to get out in the garden, walk, cycle, consider home renovations, and perhaps plan a much-needed vacation. Mother’s Day and the Victoria Day long weekend are in May and for many families, graduation celebrations are in the works. On the cover we feature Zahid Mahmood who owns Dunbar Mart, a new convenience store that recently opened next to Starbucks. The shop is stocked with snack foods, European and American candies, ice cream, grocery staples and over 200 types of drinks! If you have a sweet or salty craving or are running low on cereal, ground coffee, creamer, milk, butter, canned goods, noodles, rice, bathroom tissue and much more, Dunbar Mart may become your new go-to shop. Read more about Zahid and Dunbar Mart inside this edition. Did you know that Dunbar Bowling Club has been a part of the community since 1926? DUNBAR MART:
A Traditional Convenience Store Story by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier & Carolynne Palla
You may have noticed a new convenience store has opened on Dunbar Street next to Starbucks, although it could have easily been a part of the community for years. Dunbar Mart conjures up memories of old Vancouver when independent convenience stores were found across the city. Today, few remain, and this little blast from the past is a breath of fresh air. Zahid Mahmood also owns another convenience store in downtown Vancouver. Zahid had been operating his original business for five years when he got into a discussion with a friend who owned a Mac’s franchise. He suggested Zahid should consider opening a store in Dunbar. Zahid followed his advice and proceeded when he saw a former dry-cleaning business was for lease. After renovating the space with new 8
flooring and paint, Dunbar Mart opened in late November 2021.
“Dunbar Mart is a traditional convenience store with an emphasis on being neat and tidy.” Snack foods are carried along with many basic groceries. If you are running low on bathroom tissue, butter, canned goods, cereal, coffee creamer, ground coffee, milk, noodle, rice, and much more, Dunbar Mart may become your new go-to shop. Two hundred types of drinks are sold including Aloe Vera drinks, Jones cane sugar soda, Brew Dr. Kombucha, sparkling ICE, Jarritos fruit-

flavoured sodas from Mexico, GoodDrink fruit flavoured bottled teas (a Fort Langley based company), energy drinks and all the North American soft drinks imaginable. The store sells a great selection of confectionery, including chocolate bars and candies. European chocolates such as Milka from Germany and Jaffa Cakes from the U.K. are on the shelves along with Canadian chocolate bars.
If you haven’t been south of the border since 2020 and are craving American candy bars, look no further than Dunbar Mart. You will find 5th Avenue candy bars, which have been an American staple since 1936. Other wellknown brands include Baby Ruth, 100 Grand, PayDay, Milky Way and Whoppers malted milk balls. Zahid brought in Abba-Zaba bars by special request. These chewy taffy bars are also rooted in history, dating back to the 1920s. Three freezer cases are filled with numerous ice cream classics like Drumsticks, Hagen Daz, Snickers, Twix, and several varieties of Blue Bunny brand ice cream, including a tempting strawberry shortcake bar. Floor space is limited, and Zahid respects neighbouring businesses, so he has chosen not to sell coffee or fresh food.

“My focus is on making my customers happy.” He will do his best to bring in products that clients request. People have noticed his sandwich board sign and come in to welcome him to the area, and Dunbar’s merchants have been equally friendly.

His clientele ranges from UBC students to children and families. He says, “Kids love it. They come here after school to seek out their favourite snacks and ice cream.” Operating two enterprises means Zahid is always on the move. He heads to Dunbar Mart in the morning to open the shop and then sets off to purchase products for both stores and then check in on his other business. He says, “It does keep me busy, but I am really enjoying it.”
“It is rewarding to see the growth of my business since it opened.”
10
Dunbar Mart is currently open from 9:00 a.m. to midnight, but Zahid will consider extending the hours based on demand. His intention is always to put his customers’ needs first. Being part of this community is of utmost importance to him, and he intends to get involved with volunteer work and donation requests. Zahid says, “I am very appreciative of the support I have received. I already have many loyal customers; I listen to their wants and needs. There are very decent people in this neighbourhood.” Dunbar Mart 4479 Dunbar Street Vancouver BC V6S 2G4 Phone 604-566-7775

www.HigherGroundGardens.com COLD WINTER EFFECTS You may have noticed a few of your marginal plants are looking brown and possibly dead. Gardeners like to push the boundaries of what is hardy in our planting zone, to get fresh and interesting plant material. This winter temperatures dropped as low as -15C leaving a few brown-leaved plants. What you can do: • Gently scrape bark off one stem, if you see green inner layers the plant is still alive. • Never cut back winter damaged plants until you see new growth. • Once new growth appears, cut back hard to stimulate strong recovery. Hebe microphylla have mostly died in our climate. Plant large leaf Hebe macrophylla instead, they survive cold weather much better.
of leaves and branches but may come back. Fertilize with 14-14-14 formula for evergreens and wait for new growth. Colour that Lasts with Summer Bulbs Dahlias are a treat for any garden. Plentiful, colourful blooms liven up any sunny garden bed. Most summer bulbs love warm soil and the heat of summer. In Vancouver, you can plant in spring for blooms by summer. Dahlias, Canna Lilies and Gladiolus like a spot in full sun with moist but well drained soil. Calla Lilies can be planted in part shade or full sun. Stake taller plants as they grow. In early autumn, remember to dig out the bulbs after all the foliage has receded. Store them in a cool, dry place away from car fumes. Let them lay dormant all winter and repeat next spring.

DUNBAR LAWN BOWLING CLUB: Dunbar’s Hidden Gem Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos submitted
Nestled in Memorial Park West, behind the tennis courts and trees, is one of Dunbar’s hidden gems. Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club has been a part of the community since it was founded in 1926, and the clubhouse subsequently opened in 1928. People gather here to lawn bowl and play croquet on the beautifully maintained green. Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club is a member-funded, not-for-profit society that receives additional support from its valued sponsors. Carol Guilbault is president of the board. She has been actively involved with Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club since 2016. Like many members, it was a friend who first invited her to give bowls a try. She says, “The sport intrigued me. I am still learning — it’s a friendly and forgiving club.” Soon after, she joined the board and quickly advanced from vice president to president. Carol laughs and says, “It came more quickly than I expected!” 18
Lawn bowling is a game of precision and tactics rather than strength and speed that is suitable for all ages, from teens to 90+. All bowlers share a love of the outdoors and an enjoyment of a mildly active sport in a social and relaxed environment. Lawn bowling is one of the few sports that is gentle enough on joints and muscles to play for one’s entire life. Because there is no gender advantage, it is an ideal sport for mixed teams. Lawn bowling bears some similarities to bocce and curling; however, there are differences. The game is played on smooth, closely mown grass. Unlike a round bocce ball, a lawn bowl is round in only one direction and elliptical in the other, giving it a bias and causing it to curve.
April 15 - June 15, 2022
www.DunbarLife.com
Players take turns rolling bowls as close as possible to a small white ball, known as the jack, which may be up to 110 feet away. You earn a point for every bowl your team has that is closer to the jack than any competitor's bowl. Much like curling, bowls will curve up to six feet down the green, enabling players to thread their way around their opponents' bowls that may be guarding the jack.
You are invited to attend the club’s open house on Saturday, April 23. The pandemic has been challenging for the club. It opened in late-June 2020 under heavy COVID-19 restrictions. Fees were frozen, some older members didn’t come out, and the number of players on the green had to be significantly reduced. Last season, it opened in July under more normal conditions, albeit with strong measures in place for everyone’s health and safety. The board is looking forward to a return to normal and the opportunity to introduce new members to both lawn bowling and croquet. There are always members available to help new players learn either game. Both sports are budget-friendly. New members pay only $125 for their first-year membership and for returning members the annual fee is
www.DunbarLife.com
$225. Social memberships (no playing privileges) are $50 and junior memberships (under 18) are $125 annually. The club also collects $2 in green fees for each game day to help defray the costs of maintaining the green. The only equipment required is a pair of flatsoled, low or no tread shoes and clothing that lets you move and bend comfortably. While you may have seen pictures of players wearing white clothing this attire is reserved for Sunday afternoon matches and competitions. Street clothes are acceptable at all other times. The club has a wide range of bowls and equipment that you can use at no charge, however, most members usually acquire their own set of new or used bowls.
April 15 - June 15, 2022
19
Last year the club introduced lawn bowling for the visually impaired; sighted members are partnered with visually impaired bowlers. Carol mentions, “We got the idea from the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club; they have a very successful blind bowls program. We look forward to seeing our membership grow.” In addition to the May through September lawn bowling season, croquet is also played on the green at alternate times. Depending on the weather, croquet can continue year-round. “This isn't the backyard game of croquet you remember from your youth! Imagine a combination of chess and snooker on a large putting green in the middle of a forest and you have croquet at Dunbar,” Carol says. She recalls a Great Gatsby themed corporate event that was held at Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club. Everyone dressed in white, and they enjoyed the opportunity to try out lawn bowling while raising money for charity.
Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club’s clubhouse and green are available to rent. A fun-filled game of lawn bowling or croquet is a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday party, family reunion, or a corporate team-building event. The clubhouse is used year-round by organizations like the Dunbar Little League, the Vancouver United Football Club, and other groups. It contains a kitchen, and it is available to be booked independently for meetings or for social events.
20
Carol concludes, “Lawn bowling is very recreational and not highly competitive in our club, although some players develop their skills to enter citywide tournaments. It’s a lovely way to pass a summer afternoon, and afterwards, we might end with a barbecue or head over to the Cheese Inn to continue socializing.” Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club’s open house takes place on Saturday, April 23. It is an opportunity to meet the members, try out lawn bowling and croquet and visit the clubhouse. Families are welcome to attend. Coaching and an Introduction to Bowls course consisting of three 90-minute sessions will take place the week of April 25 – 29. Details and registration can be found on Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club’s website. Opening day is Sunday, May 1.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert What can I do if my iPhone becomes unresponsive and my data is lost? iPhones storage is encrypted by Apple for your security. This is an amazing feature that can turn into a real nuisance very quickly if your phone has stopped working. It’s not possible to pull data from the flash memory on your phone, as doing so would only give you a bunch of gibberish. The only real way to get the data off your device is by getting it working to a point where the data can be extracted. Our data recovery service is similar to our water damage repair service with one very big difference. With our data recovery service, we get your phone working up to the point of being able to turn the phone on and get the data out of it. With this process, we bypass trying to fix all other issues that may be wrong with your phone and simply focus on data recovery.

Once we are able to get your phone to boot up, we pull the data out and provide it to you in in a USB stick which you can then plug into your computer and download the data from. Alternatively, if you’ve bought another phone we can create an iTunes backup for you which you can then use to restore on to your phone.
DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert How can I infuse vintage into my decor? Here’s how you can incorporate fun, sustainable, and new-to-you vintage items into your existing decor. Vintage poufs are a great way to add a little character to your space. Most of the vintage poufs we source are made out of upcycled vintage rugs using vegetable dyes, making them not just beautiful but environmentally friendly. Alisa Stephenson
I’ve also noticed that customers want to add a pop of 80s to their decor without going overboard. Rattan furniture can be used as statement pieces to create a focal point and is an easy way to add an 80s vibe. If you aren’t ready to commit to statement pieces, smaller decorative items can bring so much interest to a space. From vintage Italian jewelry boxes, to tinted liquor glasses, to vintage salt and pepper shakers, these smaller vintage pieces are a great way to create small moments of joy throughout your home.

After losing her battle with cancer in 2020, the brand was left to her daughter Kyra, a long-time friend of Rummage owner, Zoe Pearce. In true community spirit, Kyra shared the name with Zoe to carry on Angie’s legacy of creating inclusive spaces. To honour that legacy, Rummage hosts community events from clothing swaps to button making. Do you have an idea to get creative in the store? Talk to one of our dedicated and creative team membersAnita, Cherise, Adrian, Cass, Josh, or Kyra. They’d love to talk to you!

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert I am tired of my back pain - what can physio do to help? Great question! Ongoing back pain is a very common problem and it impacts many of life’s activities. It can make simply rolling in bed or sitting in the car uncomfortable. Back pain will ruin many pleasures, keeping you from things that you love to do. It can isolate you from family and friends. So how does physio help? Physiotherapists are problem solvers and we work to solve your back pain. We determine: What is the injured structure; Why is the structure in pain; Contributing Factors – posture, weakness, tightness – what roles do these play. Next we plan the remedy: How do we stop ongoing irritation; What needs mobility; What needs strengthening; What postural changes are required; What life changes the patient may have to make; What in-clinic skills – manual therapy, IMS needling, Shock Wave Therapy, US, traction – can assist progress?

We involve the patient in each step, making sure they understand the process and its importance. In this way, the physio and patient work together to return to life free of back pain. www.DunbarLife.com
