Dunbar Life cover model Alison Gjernes has lived in Dunbar for ten years. She is a substitute teacher at two Westside private schools. She enjoys spinning classes at the Dunbar Community Centre, downhill skiing, tennis and yoga. Gjernes is married and has two children in elementary school. They play soccer in Dunbar with Vancouver United FC and are planning to play baseball with Dunbar Little League in the spring. Gjernes is the team manager of her daughter's soccer team. Her favourite Dunbar businesses are Stongs, Butter Baked Goods (she loves their lemon squares and Dream bars!) and Restoration House. Her favourite Dunbar restaurant is Jethro’s Fine Grub. She enjoys walking the family Labrador, Holly, in Pacific Spirit Park and grabbing a "Spirit Park" muffin and coffee at Bean Around the World. In the warmer months Gjernes and her family like to walk to Dairy Queen to get a Blizzard from Simon. She feels grateful to live in this wonderful community and always enjoys seeing familiar faces as she runs errands in the neighbourhood. Gjernes had plenty of fun getting ready for the Dunbar Life photo shoot. She extends a special thanks to her good friend, Lara, owner of the boutique, Misch, for helping assemble her outfit. Thank you also to Faye, for makeup and hair styling, a treat which Gjernes thoroughly enjoyed!

A Message from the President Beth McKercher, Dunbar Village Business Association Despite the rainy winter blahs, it’s an exciting time in Dunbar Village! We are delighted to launch our new program called Dunbargains. As a replacement for our popular printed coupon book, Dunbargains is a web and email based coupon program similar to Groupon or Living Social except no advance purchase is necessary. Just sign up and once a week bargains that you can use in your own neighbourhood will appear in your email inbox. If you want to take advantage of the deal, just print and use — it’s that simple. Even if you are not a coupon-lover, you’ll be able to find out what’s happening in Dunbar Village at your favourite businesses and be introduced to something new. It’s a great way to be connected to your neighbourhood. Look for the ad on page 14 or go to the website at www.dunbargains.ca for more information.
In this issue you’ll meet the brains & talent behind Innova Kitchen & Bath Design: Paul Coker & Lee Stergios. Tucked around the corner from W 41st on Collingwood St, their design inspiration showroom is a real gem in Dunbar Village. You’ll read about the expanse of their business offering and why they decided to relocate to make Dunbar Village their new home. Even after only being in the neighbourhood a short time, Paul jumped in to serve the community by volunteering his time to work on the Dunbar Village Business Association board of directors. We are truly fortunate to have Paul & Lee in our neighbourhood. You’ll also meet Tan Tran, owner of Bean Around the World Coffees at 5601 Dunbar Street (Dunbar at W 40th). This popular,
6
relaxed and intimate hangout is bustling at all times of the day. The delicious coffee and breakfast attract you in the morning, but it’s the yummy daily meal specials that call you back throughout the day. My personal favourite is the turkey panini with a market salad; it’s always fresh and always tasty. Just like you, businesses such as Bean Around the World were challenged these past months with the sewer upgrade construction along Dunbar. Parking limitations, noise and dirt made it harder to enjoy the neighbourhood so we especially appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding during that time. The great news is that, except for some very shortterm disruptions coming this spring, Dunbar Village is open for business. Parking and pedestrian areas are back to normal and we encourage you to get out and reacquaint yourself with your favourite Dunbar Village merchant. Dunbar resident and mother of six, Sue Dvorak, shares her experiences with us again. This time she writes about renovating her home; something that many Dunbarites can relate to. With a light-hearted touch, Sue shares some of her lessons learned to help you survive the process. I especially like the suggestion to keep one room untouched by renovation so that you have a sanctuary or hiding place. It’s hard to believe with the current cold and rainy weather that it’s time to start planting seeds and readying your garden. Look for the article from Julia Smith, a Dunbar resident and owner of Urban Digs Farm, who gives valuable information about how easy it is to grown your own food. The self-sustainability movement is gaining popularity among many residents in Vancouver and our own Dunbar is one of neighbourhoods leading the charge. Even if you aren’t ready to turn your front lawn into planting beds, there are lots of resourceful enthusiasts like Julia within our neighbourhood who can talk you through the process. Dunbar Life Magazine is intended to celebrate everything that’s great about living in Dunbar and this issue is a perfect example. Enjoy!

INNOVA by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
“Design changes everything…” is Innova Kitchens and Baths company slogan. Having recently gone through the daunting task of designing both a new kitchen and bathroom, I confess that at times I was in over my head. When I met Paul Coker I joked that if I had known about Innova’s design service I would have thrown in the towel and hired him and his business partner, Lee Stergios, at the beginning of the project! With over twenty years each of design and project management experience, Coker and Stergios formed Innova Kitchens and Baths in 2004. Innova’s showroom is tucked around the corner on Collingwood Street, just off of West 41st Avenue. The bright and attractive space with high ceilings serves double duty as their office, and showcases a sampling of kitchen styles. Coker points out that the showroom displays are a mere tip of the iceberg, and there are a multitude of options available. It is important to schedule an appointment to visit the showroom as Coker and Stergios may be on location at a project site. By working closely with their clients, Innova ensures a successful renovation
12
will reflect the style of the home, consider how the space is used, and take into account personality and personal taste. Innova’s renovations are driven by design. Construction only begins once the design is completed, as opposed to some renovation companies which design when construction is already underway. Innova’s services are not limited to kitchens and bathrooms; they can work with you on any area of your home including living and dining areas, custom built-ins, bedrooms, custom closets, entertainment and media rooms, and developing basements. While the original showroom was in Burnaby, Coker and Stergios decided to relocate to Dunbar as many of their clients are Vancouver based. They offer their interior design and renovation construction services to Burnaby, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, New Westminster, Port Moody and Coquitlam. Below are some of the top reasons why you should consider hiring a professional kitchen designer. They can provide:
www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Feb 15 - Apr 15, 2012
1. Detailed CAD layout, electrical/ mechanical, and elevation drawings that optimize the functionality of your new kitchen, and ensure a cohesive design style. Drawings give you a preview of how your new kitchen will look and function, and avoid costly errors during construction. 2. An integrated lighting plan that includes both functional and ambient lighting specific to the new kitchen design. 3. A professionally coordinated finish and fixture selection. This helps ease the feeling of being overwhelmed when selecting and coordinating flooring, cabinetry, handles, countertops, the backsplash, paint, plumbing and light fixtures, window coverings, fabrics, wallpapers and any other design and finish elements.
5739 Collingwood Street 604-676-1603 www.innovakitchens.com
4. Assistance with the selection of appliances to ensure that you choose appliances that meet the functional needs and scale requirements of your new kitchen. You do not want to be one of many people who inadvertently purchase expensive and incorrectly sized appliances. 5. A detailed fixed price contract based on the design, fixture and finish selection thus avoiding the costly surprises associated with cost plus projects. 6. General contracting and professional management to ensure trouble free completion of your project in the construction phase. Whether you are looking to renovate your kitchen or bathroom yourself and need a plan that will ensure a successful renovation that does not lead to costly errors, or if your are looking for an interior designer to take you from concept to completed renovation, Innova Kitchens and Baths provides you with a design plan to get it right the first time and ensure success. www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Feb 15 - Apr 15, 2012

Bean Around the World by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier business from their homes. In addition, he was attracted to the building that houses Bean Around the World. His diverse customer base includes everyone from bus drivers, to teachers, police officers, students, and construction workers. Over the years Tran has shared some important milestones with his customers as they have welcomed new babies, students have headed off to university, and families have moved in and out of the community. There are currently twenty one Bean Around the World locations in British Columbia. Each coffee house is independently owned and operated, allowing owners, like Tran, to personalize their business, and not convey a cookie cutter feeling. The common denominator is the coffee. Coffee beans are centrally roasted in North Vancouver and are supplied to Bean Around the World coffee shops.
Bean Around the World is a neighbourhood coffee house buzzing with energy. Tan Tran, the charming owner with a warm and welcoming smile, has put his personal stamp on his coffee shop. With its mustard and red accent walls, black wainscoting, eclectic artwork, and a cozy corner with two chairs to snuggle up in beside a gas fireplace, complete with a chess board and a bookshelf which is a lending library, the atmosphere evokes the feeling of an inviting living room. Tran opened Bean Around the World in May 2005. He felt that the south end of Dunbar was in need of a coffee house, and he particularly liked the idea of being in a community where people could walk to his
16
Tran describes his business as a hybrid coffee house/bistro. Beer and wine is available at lunch. The creative menu has the ability to make you smile before you even taste the food. Try not to grin when you order a Gobbler sandwich (artisan pecan/craisin bread, with smoked turkey, red onions, garlic butter, honey Dijon and cheddar) or the Chickalish wrap (chicken, masala, lentil, curry). Other temptations include the divine Namaste sandwich (marinated grilled veggies, pesto sauce, provolone and smoked gouda) as well as the Spirit Park muffin (made with spelt flour), carrot cake, squares, breakfast sandwiches and on the day that I was there, African Safari soup. The wheat free and gluten free pastries are very popular items.
www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Feb 15 - Apr 15, 2012
Tran comes to the world of coffee from a diverse background, having worked in a variety of fields including the food and beverage industry, insurance, Information Technology (IT), importing Asian groceries and goods, and as a paralegal. Tran is well travelled and has witnessed coffee culture in many parts of the world. Born in Vietnam, he spent his childhood in Hong Kong, Winnipeg and Vancouver. As an adult he lived in Montreal for a few years, but was drawn back to the West Coast. His decision to open Bean Around the World stemmed from a desire for a new life style. He is a self-described “people person”, and his goal is to bring happiness and laughter to his customers. Judging by the full tables, and the satisfied look on his customers’ faces, Tran has worked his magic. He has a strong social conscience, he is doing his part to keep his business ethical, and he is committed to fair trade. Tran is quick to give credit to his staff of seven who are an asset to the business. They contribute to the welcoming environment, and enjoy working at the busy coffee shop.
In December 2011, Tran opened his second business, Blaq Sheep Coffee House & Bistro, in Yaletown. He splits his time between the two businesses; however Dunbar customers are sure to see him each day. He lives in the Dunbar area and not surprisingly Tran’s favourite thing about the community is the people. Coffee is one of my greatest indulgences, and I attest that Bean Around the World makes a fine cup of coffee, and furthermore, Tran made good on his promise; I walked out the door with a smile on my face. 5601 Dunbar Street 604-261-8188 www.fuelledbycaffeine.com
He gauges the success of his business by the loyalty and continued support of his customers; many treat the coffee shop as their second home. It is open seven days a week and on weekdays you can grab your first eye opening coffee as early as 6 a.m. (weekends 7 a.m.). The shop is open until 6 p.m. nightly. Bean Around the World supports local fundraising and charity events through the donation of coffee. www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Feb 15 - Apr 15, 2012

Embrace Your Garden This Spring by Jessica Salvador Spring is my favorite time of year as we get to spend time outside playing in the garden. Here is an overview of how to effectively care for your lawn, garden beds, plants and shrubs. Lawns: Lawns love spring because they get your attention again. If your lawn is a manageable size rake out dead grass blades (thatch) and debris with a hand rake and then use an aeration tool to remove plugs of soil to allow air to get to the roots. Once the turf is aerated, then you can re-seed bare patches using a west coast seed blend, following instructions on the bag. We’ve found that perennial rye grass blended with fine fescue performs best in our conditions. High rainfall in Vancouver causes lawn soil to become acidic. Applying lime and a spring fertilizer after all the prep work will greatly help the lawn’s overall condition. Garden beds: Next, get the weeds out while they’re babies. The monster weeds of summer are easily avoidable. The best tip for keeping your garden low maintenance is to do a thorough weeding and then install a layer of decomposed mulch. Guaranteed, summer will be a breeze. Adding mulches helps conserve water and suppress weeds while adding nutrients to the soil. Now that’s what we like to call a gardening triple threat!
18
Shrubs and Plants: Treat your plants to some TLC. Check for dead branches or winter damage and prune them cleanly. Trim perennials or grasses that have been left through winter. Formal hedges benefit from a shaping to look clean with manicured, straight lines. This can be done by hand with shears or using powered trimmers. Pruning deciduous shrubs now will reward you later with a vigorous show of flowers. Shrubs such as Buddleja (butterfly bush), Cornus (dogwood) and Cotinus (purpleleafed smoke bush) get cut right back for a grand show in summer. Hydrangeas will greatly benefit from having one third of existing branches cut out. Remember, on remaining branches, to leave the top buds that were formed last year as they are this year’s flowers. EGRC: The Little Charity that Could story and photo submitted
BC’s Society for Educating Girls in Rural China (EGRC) is a local grass roots charity founded by Dunbar resident and business owner, Tien Ching. The EGRC provides financial support to young women from impoverished rural China to attend university, and is inspired by Tien’s own personal experience. She grew up in rural China and dreamt of attending university, however her dream did not materialize as she was forced to work in a fertilizer factory for seven years. After managing to immigrate to Canada and settling in the Dunbar area Tien vowed to make a difference. In 2005 she started EGRC to provide the gift of education to those young women like her who have tried to make the best of a dire situation. To date EGRC has sponsored 286 young women from impoverished rural regions to receive a university education. In addition EGRC is planning to expand its sponsorship to include high school as it is becoming increasingly difficult for girls to advance beyond grade 9. EGRC is hoping to launch the high school program in 2012 with fundraising efforts targeting Canadian companies that operate in China. The charity would also like to work together with Lower Mainland high schools; initiating programs that will see students raise money and correspond with their Chinese counterparts. While this is mostly about raising money, it is also about making a connection through education so that future generations from Canada to China can work together to solve the world’s social, economic, and environmental problems.
24
Despite China being an economic powerhouse, the per capita average GDP of impoverished rural regions is a mere $400 compared to Canada’s average GDP of $39,000, according to the International Monetary Fund. Due to this impoverishment, families simply cannot afford for their daughters to attain a post-secondary education. Tien firmly believes that education is the key to transcending poverty to a world of opportunity and success. She believes educating women benefits future generations, as educated women will raise educated children. The success of this little charity is shown through Bixia Wang, an EGRC sponsored student who is the first student to continue on to graduate studies in Canada. In September, she began her Master’s degree at Simon Fraser University with a scholarship from SFU. Bixia struggles with her emotions to say, “This program has changed my life and my future children’s life,” she pauses “And my children’s children’s life”. Tien attributes the charity’s success to the ongoing support of the Dunbar community. For 8 years Tien’s business, the Omega Gallery, on Dunbar and 27th, has been the hub for both residents and businesses to come and drop off donations and hear the latest news. In 2011 Tien sold Omega Gallery to focus solely on the charity, but wants everyone to know that it is just as easy to stay connected by going across the street to Chloe Angus Design at 4273 Dunbar. Chloe Angus has been a long time supporter of EGRC and joined the board in 2011 to help with ongoing fundraising efforts. A major source of income for the EGRC is the annual Dim Sum Luncheon; the fundraiser includes a raffle, live auction and an array of exotic dim sum delicacies. This year the luncheon will be hosted by Global TV’s Dr. Art Hister on April 13th. To book your tickets or for more information go to Chloe Angus Design or www.egrc.ca From Tien Ching, the board of EGRC, and the 286 young women whose lives have been changed by the Dunbar community’s continuous support and generosity, “Thank You”.

Home Renovations Are Funny Things by Sue Dvorak
Everything starts off swimmingly, the homeowners giddy with saved or financed cash and armed with magazine photos, product samples and joyful anticipation of the sunlit, well-planned, gorgeous new space in their home. Fast-forward a few months and the same homeowners are skulking about, hair unwashed because the water has been turned off again, muttering about foundation rebar and how unreasonable everyone else is being. They report having to talk to the contractor daily as colossally annoying. They seem surprised that tearing off the top of the house has created some disarray or that excavating underneath it has stirred up quite a lot of dirt. They whine about men in boots with large trucks and loud radios arriving at all hours, taking over their world. I know because I have been one of these people. But really, these things should not be a surprise nor should we act as though they are. I recently had time to ponder this during five months of communing in the basement with my family of eight while our kitchen was demolished, enlarged and remodeled. No evil force placed the mountain of gravel and a portapotty on the front lawn, or commanded us to wash dishes in a laundry tub and cook on a hotplate for months or moved all our furniture into one half of the
26
house. We brought this privileged situation upon ourselves. I decided we needed to "man up", as the kids say, and not complain at all. Ever. Being pleasant and reasonable for extended periods of time is possible: I had seen other people do it. Eliminating freak-outs and whining as options became an amazingly helpful tool in coping with our renovation. Some people might get carried away and even apply this approach to the rest of their life as well. Here are some other handy tips discovered along the way. Prepare one room in your house to remain a sanctuary. Cram excess furnishings elsewhere and arrange this room tastefully, store things neatly in baskets, keep it clean and display flowers. This is where you will sit to relax, drink tea and rock back and forth while sucking your thumb. Expect things to go wrong because they will. Moving walls, relocating a furnace or rerouting plumbing is rarely straightforward. When a very dirty man comes to your temporary door to report a concrete pumper-truck mishap or a clean man in a suit to discuss problematic weight-bearing wall shear forces, stand with good posture to enhance bravery. Be ready for anything.

one piece of reporting such as a breezy "Last week's small fire was put out quickly and there was hardly any damage!" and the like. If a friend offers a home-cooked meal, like from an oven, try not to shriek and burst into tears.
That way, when a worker falls through exposed floor joists from upstairs down into your sanctuary you will find yourself exclaiming, albeit a bit too loudly, “My Goodness, I have been wondering if something might go wrong this week. I think this is it! Do not fight with your contractor or any of the sub-trades. This is not helpful. Odd that none of us seem to remember being three years old when having a temper-tantrum took much more energy than cooperating. Hold your ground and say your piece whenever necessary but try to avoid behaviours that would have you sent for a time-out if you were attending preschool. Occasionally do the unexpected and just say hello and keep going without launching into a list of concerns. However, launch away politely when called for. Do all your required shopping well ahead of schedule: be a few steps ahead of the construction. No matter how busy your life normally is, a renovation requires that you go shopping about 27 times in two months. Do not be surprised or cranky about this. You will need to choose carpet, tile, sinks and such, but you will also find yourself considering items you have never thought about before, such as closet doors, hallway light fixtures, those vent register covers, various types of wood trim and garburators. Who knew? Persevere at all costs though. You must resist Reno Fatigue, the ailment that will lead you to say crazy things such as "just put in whatever you like there." This response will result in your renovation turning out like the "before" photos in all those home makeover magazines. Take your multivitamins, stay hydrated and go shopping. Try not to talk about your renovation too much. When others ask you about your 'reno', they are not actually that interested; they are just being polite. Limit your response to
Keep the end in sight, even if it involves buying next year's calendar to do so. Create a "happy place" shoebox full of things to remind you that the result will be worthwhile: a pretty tile, your sketch of the new windows, the remote that will operate the fabulous new garage door. Yes, there will be walls again and that lovely tile will be on one of them. Eventually, finally, your new or renewed space will emerge. Drywall dust will stop reappearing, the mess will slowly disappear and the crews invading your world daily for months on end will gradually abate. Still, your unprecedented reasonable behaviour must continue right out into the finished product. When guests are admiring your beautifully renovated space do not suddenly slide on your belly into a cabinet to indignantly point out the chipped drywall corner or crooked electrical plug-in. This is not necessary. Step back from the all the details that have made you crazy and just enjoy the whole outcome. A renovation result is doubly thrilling, one, because the new space is fantastic and two, in no small part, because it is over.
Sue Dvorak, a physiotherapist, her husband Marcel and their six children, now aged 8-18, live in the Dunbar area where, over the past 17 years, they have found their parish, preschool, elementary school, shops and services, playgrounds, friends, soccer teams and more.

Dunbar: Vancouver’s Newest Food Oasis By Julia Smith, Urban Digs Farm As I write this all snuggled up in wool socks by my space heater, watching the rather disgruntled chickens make their way through the snowy yard, it is hard to believe that it’s almost time to start planting for the upcoming growing season. But in two weeks, my seeds will arrive and my basement will become ground zero for seedling production for my early season crops including spinach, kale, lettuce and green onions. Fresh, locally grown food will be plentiful in Dunbar this year but this hasn’t always been the case. It might surprise you to know that last year, our neighbourhood was identified as a “food desert” according to a study by University of British Columbia researcher Jennifer Black. Food deserts are typically most prevalent in low-socioeconomic minority communities but as it turns out, the nature of Vancouver’s west side is such that a combination of lower density housing and zoning that deters food business has put us in a venerable position where local food security is concerned. But fear not! Dunbar is home to two of this city’s most productive farms, Urban Digs and Yummy Yards and your local urban farmers are on a mission to bring fresh, locally grown food back to our community.
30
An “urban farm” is typically something of a patchwork of separate plots of land in close proximity to each other cobbled together to make up the total area of the farm. We use a combination of this model, together with larger areas of land in more ‘traditional’ agricultural areas including Vancouver’s Southlands area and nearby Richmond. One of the urban plots you may be familiar with is at the corner of 41st and Blenheim where Urban Digs and Yummy Yards actually share a large plot. At our larger plots we grow crops that take up too much space to grow efficiently in urban areas and raise livestock for meat and eggs. Part of meeting our sustainability goals means growing food locally and keeping it in the community. One of the ways we do that is through the Friends of Southlands Farmers Market which will run once a month this year with an expanded format to include community celebrations, educational opportunities and family friendly activities. We will also be at the new Vancouver Farmers Market in Kerrisdale every Saturday. Perhaps the best way to really share in the bounty though is to join one of our “Community Shared Agriculture” (CSA)
www.dunbarlife.com | DunbarLife Magazine | Feb 15 - Apr 15, 2012
programs. In this model, you are essentially purchasing a share of the farm’s harvest for the season. By paying at the beginning of the season, you are helping the farmer to offset some of the capital expenses associated with the beginning of the season (seeds, irrigation systems, baby chicks, etc.). Members receive a weekly harvest box for 18 weeks from June to October filled with fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, eggs, meat, preserves, honey and other tasty, locally produced treats depending on your preferences. Some of the benefits reported by CSA members include: • Establishing better eating habits through a regular supply of fresh, healthy food
• • • • • •
Weeds and pests Culinary and medicinal herbs Food preservation and storage All about garlic Winter garden preparations Composting
I hope by now that you are as excited about the upcoming season as I am. We’d really love for you to be part of our farms this year. For more information about Urban Digs and Yummy Yards including our CSA programs, workshops, markets, growing practices, etc., please visit our web sites: www.urbandigsfarm.com | www.yummyyards.ca
• The opportunity to try new foods that you might not otherwise have purchased • Learning new skills and spending quality time with family while preparing unprocessed, fresh food together • Living a more sustainable lifestyle • Enjoying more nutrient rich food that keeps longer since it was picked fresh and did not spend time in transit and storage before reaching your home • A greater connection to where food comes from through participation in onfarm activities and member events like movie nights and meals • Saving money by preparing wholesome meals at home
more
Both Urban Digs and Yummy Yards are running CSA programs this year. CSA shares tend to sell out quickly so if you are interested, don’t delay! Now buying food from local farmers is all very well and good but what we’d REALLY like to see is more of you growing your own food at home. Don’t get me wrong, I like growing kale as much as the next guy but to be honest with you, it’s so easy, anyone can do it. If you grew more kale, I’d have more time for things like pastured chickens. So, with that in mind, we will also be offering workshops all season long covering topics such as: • • • • •
Seed starting Fruit tree pruning Native pollinators Vegetable gardening Terrific tomatoes
Links to other local food resources vancouvercityfarms.com – Both Urban Digs and Yummy Yards are members of a collaborative group of local farmers called “Metro Vancouver City Farms.” If you know someone who lives on the East Side or in Richmond, this site can help connect you with other farms that share our values and growing practices running CSA programs in other neighbourhoods. westsidefoodcollaborative.org – A group of community members, health professionals, NGOs, City staff and faith based organizations who are interested in addressing the issue of food security on the west side of Vancouver. southlandsfarms.com - a small, family and friend run working farm that educates about friendly food systems and provides opportunities for people of all ages to experience farm life without leaving the city. kjmcountrygardens.com - a family owned and operated garden centre situated on a farm-like setting in Southlands. This year, KJM will be putting a special emphasis on food production gardening.
