Honouring the Artist and the Community

Professional photographer Yukiko Onley is the owner of VISUALSPACE Gallery. This commercial gallery is a jewel in Dunbar’s crown. When the gallery opened eight years ago, it was a partnership between Yukiko and two other artists; however, she has been the sole proprietor since 2016.
“What makes VISUALSPACE unique is we exhibit a wide range of mediums; we have displayed ceramics, various types of prints, textiles, sculptures, furniture, jewellery and, of course, paintings,” says Yukiko.
“My goal is to show quality artwork and reflect the integrity of the artists. Although I realize that I have a long way to go, I am moving towards my goal with the support of my customers and artists.”
The space is perfect for art installations with its high ceiling, deep floor plan and west-facing storefront. In addition, there is a lower-level gallery at the back entrance of the business.
Yukiko grew up in Osaka, Japan; she has lived in Vancouver since 1976. Her early training was as a painter. In 1989, painting led her to photography. Yukiko’s long association with Canadian artist Toni Onley both during and after their marriage, has significantly influenced her work.
Although the gallery takes up most of Yukiko’s time, her professional photography portfolio includes elegant, sophisticated, and timeless portraits, live dance, theatre, and wedding photography.
She intends to break the stereotype of intimidating and stuffy galleries and make VISUALSPACE approachable and welcoming.

Being an owner-operated gallery allows visitors to talk to Yukiko, who is onsite most days. She notes Dunbar is a highly cultured and educated community with a flourishing artists’ community.
Yukiko says, “Walking into an art gallery can be intimidating. This doesn’t seem to be the case with VISUALSPACE. People casually come in wearing gardening clothes and carrying Home Hardware shopping bags. I often mention that they cannot eat their ice cream from DQ inside the gallery. People feel comfortable coming in and looking around, and I am happy to be able to create that kind of environment. After all, art should be a part of our daily life just like music is.”
While art installations are the primary focus, VISUALSPACE is also available to rent as a venue for small concerts and receptions. The long room is ideal for setting up chairs and creating an aisle. After the ceremony, the space functions as a reception area.
People are incredibly grateful to Yukiko for injecting culture into the neighbourhood.
Yukiko is passionate about curating exhibits, and she enjoys coordinating installations. A
diverse range of shows rotates through the gallery and are on display for two weeks.
“Naturally, it is crucial for any gallery to showcase outstanding artists. It has been a challenge for me to find them; even though there are many self-claimed artists, outstanding artists are hard to come by. Fortunately, thanks to the internet, particularly Instagram and other social media, I have come across excellent artists living in the Vancouver area,” says Yukiko.
She adds, “The gallery’s website and social media are constantly updated.”

Yukiko strives to exhibit mainly local artists’ work.
She explains, ”Once I like an artist’s work, I always visit their studio to meet them and view their work instead of asking them to bring their portfolio to me. I believe visiting studios is essential to running the gallery since I learn a lot about the artist and their work. The right chemistry is necessary between artists and galleries.”
“One of the things I am very proud of is that I have established strong relationships with all the artists who have exhibited at VISUALSPACE. What I enjoy most is meeting and getting to know them.”
Many exhibits are scheduled for 2023. Upcoming shows include “Waterways” by Frances Obie (February 9 to 25) and “On the Edge of Where I Live” by Marisa Mary Myrah (March 2 to 18).

Busy Bee Cleaners is independently owned. Priya Padhiyar bought the franchise in 2017. Her whole family was in the dry cleaning business in India.
Common clothing items that come in for cleaning include dress shirts, suits, dresses, graduation and wedding dresses. They can also dry clean small carpets too up to 10’ x 14’. Note that they do not clean purses and shoes.
Need alterations, a new zipper, buttons, pocket rips, or hemming? Busy Bee is a one-stop for cleaning and repairing clothing. Alterations are generally a one-week turnaround.
The store is a convenient drop-off location for Purolator, FedEx and UPS. Drivers drop off there (if people are not at home to receive the package) and people can return packages there.

MRS. SAM’S TUTORING: Building Confidence and Grades

Does your child struggle with academic concepts or wish to excel beyond their grade level? Mrs. Sam’s is a one-stop tutoring services centre that can help your child succeed and boost their confidence.
Assuntha Ramanathan (Mrs. Sam) and her husband Ravee Ramakrishnan, own the tutoring centre; Ravee founded the business, and Assuntha runs it. They chose the business name because it is short and easy to remember.
Mrs. Sam’s Richmond location opened in 2016 and has flourished, so much so that Vancouver parents travelled to Richmond to utilize their services. Based on the demand and requests from parents, they opened the Dunbar location in January 2022.

Some parents encounter problems finding a tutor when their child requires academic support. Assuntha says, “Through referrals from teachers and other parents, they turn to us when their child is struggling with key educational concepts. We cater to kids of all ages. It is very fulfilling to see students progress and succeed academically.”
Every child is assessed and placed at their ability level for their educational journey. Ravee says, “We don’t hold them back by their grade level. For example, we have a Grade 10 student working at a Grade 12 level.”
Assuntha mentions, “Many of our tutors are UBC technology and engineering students with high-grade point averages. They are versatile and can teach any age level. We hand-pick the best applicants, paying close attention to those
who will work with preschool and elementary students. We teach and train them, so they all follow the same method for consistency.”
Math tutoring is geared toward building a solid mathematical foundation through real-world applications for simple to complex mathematical equations.
The English tutoring program matches tutors to fit each child’s learning style. English tutors identify the source of a child’s difficulties and apply techniques to enrich their child’s knowledge and comprehension. Beginner readers learn essential sight words to help them quickly identify keywords to help master the English language.
Completing homework and assignments and preparing for upcoming tests are at the top of the list.
Assuntha says, “We concurrently teach and help with homework alongside the programs we offer. The goal is for our students to get good grades.”
Mrs. Sam’s Pre-Kindergarten Montessori-based program helps little ones (ages 3 to 5) become independent readers. With a group limit of six

children, the Pre-K program prepares children for school readiness by equipping them with essential skills, including learning to concentrate and focus in a classroom setting. Children develop a strong recognition of the alphabet, numbers, vocabulary, and basic reading. They also learn to write neatly and symmetrically and comprehend basic phonics sounds.
Ravee points out that the popular Singapore Math program sets Mrs. Sam’s apart and makes their learning centre unique. He says, “Some private schools started teaching this method, and then public schools followed.”
Singapore Math is based on the mathematics curriculum developed and used in Singapore. Three distinct approaches to understanding mathematical concepts and problem-solving are used, from concrete to pictorial to abstract. This encourages students to actively think, understand, and communicate to solve math problems.
The tutoring centre also offers services for students with learning challenges such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dyslexia.
Students are taught at a pace that meets their learning needs. Assuntha comments, “They experience very positive results.”
Classes are offered year-round. Winter and spring breaks are popular times to attend, as is summer vacation. There is a constant intake throughout the year. Some students attend once a week, while others may attend four times a week.
“We love hearing parents tell us how well their child is doing at school and how their grades have improved. These words are more than money can buy. We pat our tutors on the back for a job well done,” says Assuntha.
