DRAGON & PHOENIX: A Passion for Designer Consignment Fashion Story by Sarah Gordon

Calling all fashionistas! Are you aware there is a store in Dunbar where you can purchase designer clothing in like-new condition for a third of the original retail price while avoiding the environmental cost of fast fashion? For the last 30 years, Dragon & Phoenix Designer Consignments has been in the business of dressing young women to seniors in savvy and stylish clothing and accessories.
Nili Lotan, Prada, Rag & Bone, Theory, Tory Burch, Ulla Johnson, Vince, and Xirena. Owner Audrey Hubbard and managing partner Faidra Berda share the same philosophy about the business; they also happen to be mother and daughter. In 1992, Audrey bought the business from her former employer who she worked with for many years.
Customers are attracted to how far their money goes when they shop consignment. They also feel the intrinsic reward of doing their part to reduce their environmental footprint. All customers are drawn to the impressive selection of quality designer labels in mint condition.

Audrey explains, “I have always had a passion for fashion, jewellery, and collectibles. I’ve been blessed the past 35 years to have a career that encompasses so many of my interests; but what I love most are our amazing customers, consignees, and co-workers.” The business was previously located in Kerrisdale for 12 years and then moved to its current location on West 41st Avenue near Dunbar Street. Faidra comments, “I think it was a very good call on Mom’s part to keep the new location close to our Kerrisdale client base. The Dunbar store is also much more modern.”

mom and me, it is definitely not about just making the sale; it’s always about building authentic relationships with our consignees and customers. I believe the sales come naturally once you’ve built the relationships,” remarks Faidra. At Dragon & Phoenix, you will find shoes, sleepwear, athletic wear, work, and casual clothes, formal wear and suits, hats, belts, scarves, purses, jewellery, bras, wallets, sunglasses, and some newborn and toddler clothing. In addition, the shop carries some small household items and used books, with proceeds going to Aunt Leah’s Place, which helps prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless and mothers in need from losing custody of their children.

Customers love the selection of clothing that is neatly organized into small, medium, and large sections (the store carries up to size 16). Some of their youngest clients are teens who come in to explore the section of the store dedicated to Aritzia.
“I truly believe once you start shopping at Dragon & Phoenix, it’s impossible to go back to regular retail,” says Faidra. To consign with Dragon & Phoenix, simply bring in fifteen or more (Banana Republic price point or higher) clean, seasonal, in like-new condition pieces purchased within the last two years. Consignees can bring in their items Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you can’t make it in person, drop off your folded and bagged items any time during store hours and they will be priced and sold based on Audrey and Faidra’s expertise; they will send any unsuitable items to charity. They discount pieces first monthly, then seasonally, and send anything that does not sell to charity at the end of the season unless the consignee collects them. Once items sell, the consignee receives 40 per cent of the selling price in-person by cheque, or earnings may be used for in-store purchases. The nine-member Dragon & Phoenix team purchase virtually all of their clothes at the shop. Faidra has been shopping at the store for all of her clothing for the ten years she has been involved as managing partner. Their customers are 100 per cent committed to this globally-minded mode of shopping, and purchase almost all their fashion needs at what many say is “their favourite consignment shop in the city.” Some customers have been known to happily browse for three hours in the inviting environment that has been thoughtfully designed. A fresh and light lemongrass scent fills the air, plenty of plants add to the relaxing atmosphere and the store’s well-chosen

music playlist receives many compliments. Every customer is offered a choice of two beverages (cucumber water and iced tea), with COVID safety protocols being closely adhered to. “I credit so much of the shop’s success to our devoted and loyal staff. They treat the business as if it’s their own. They go above and beyond to give our customers the best possible experience,” says Faidra. She adds, “The diversity of my work is what makes me excited. The store is always changing and evolving, as we try out new ideas and innovations to give our customers and consignees the best possible shopping experience. I absolutely love every aspect of my work, but the best part is sharing this time and experience with my mother.”

A Love of Art, Beauty, and Learning Story by Sarah Gordon

If you have been searching for an artistic outlet for your child or yourself, you will be delighted to know that after a number of years Dunbar Art Studio (aka 4Cats) has recently reopened on Dunbar Street under new management. While the business model has changed, the concept of offering stimulating and creative programs remains the same. 4Cats Arts Studio got its start in 2005 in Victoria. Founder Joey Alice has grown the company into a Canadian success story with locations in B.C. Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. She is very involved with each studio to ensure high quality and aesthetic standards are being met.
Anna “Banana” (as the kids fondly refer to her) is the manager of the Dunbar Art Studio that opened in mid-March. 18
Anna previously managed 4Cats Kitsilano at West 10th Avenue and Alma Street, as well as the West Vancouver studio. She remarks, “I am excited to be in Dunbar. I moved here at the end of March and love the community.” She mentions, “4Cats has always believed in fostering a love of art and art history, but now we also offer quite a few more specialized classes as well as our classic exploratory class. This class is fun and educational. Students explore a variety of mediums while learning about famous artists, art history, and culture. Our curriculum encourages a love of learning, independence, art technique learning, and skill development. We have been offering this class for many years now, and it is what most families are familiar with.” Anna adds, “We have new specialized classes that are aimed at students who have perhaps already done an exploratory class, and are interested in exploring clay and sculpture, macramé, and stop-motion animation, as well

as themed classes from Pokémon, to bees, mermaids, Minecraft, whales and many more to come!” There is something for anyone with artistic aspirations with programs for kids as young as two years old, all the way up to adults. The studio’s primary age group is three to 12-year-olds for the classes, but they also offer a Kittens class for two to four-yearolds (with an adult participant), and a teen class for ages 12 to 17.
“We have noticed that our workshops are filling up with lots of adults; they are fun to teach,” says Anna. When the pandemic hit, 4Cats restructured their studios to comply with social distancing regulations. This includes smaller class sizes,
special creation stations for each student (or a pair of students in the same bubble) separated by plexiglass, and a health check/contact tracing QR code form that is filled out at the door before entering the studio. They also require masks to be worn at all times while inside the studio, as per B.C. regulations.
School will soon be out and the studio’s summer camps are open for registration. Anna mentions, “We are currently only offering full-day camps to reduce the number of bodies in and out of the studio. These camps consist of two art projects every day, including artist/ art history lessons with each, and an hour-long lunch break/free time in the middle. There is also a badge ceremony at the end of each day where students earn badges that celebrate something they excelled at on a given day.” At present, there are two staff working at the studio, with a plan to double that number this summer. Anna has a passion for pottery projects and enjoys teaching them. Like the students, she is always excited about different mediums and looks forward to an upcoming screen-printing project.

As for the kids, their preferences vary, however, Anna says, “Oven bake clay is always a hit, as well as any mediums we don’t do very often such as printmaking and acrylic pours!” “The most rewarding thing for us is watching the kids grow and develop their skills and interests. There’s nothing more special than watching a child really connect with a project and work really hard to create something beautiful. From the feedback we’ve heard, the most rewarding thing for our 4Cats families is the knowledge that while their children are having fun making art and getting messy, they’re also learning professional art techniques, discovering new mediums that they may never have tried before, and coming out of their shell,” says Anna. Although the pandemic has altered so many activities in our lives, 4Cats birthday parties are still able to proceed with protocols in place. Parties can accommodate up to 20 participants (10 per room, in the two-room space) although they are no longer able to have party guests’ parents inside (just the party parent).

That is the beauty of art; it allows one’s imagination to take flight as you escape and focus on the sheer pleasure of creating.

A genuine handknotted Oriental rug will last for several generations if you look after it and protect it from premature wear and damage from water, moths, pets, vacuum cleaners, chemicals, sun, and uneven wear. Water Damage: Should you experience water damage, the rug must be removed quickly, properly cleaned, and allowed to dry completely. Moths: Clothes moths can lay hundreds of eggs causing an infestation of cobweb-like veil in the area of the damage, along with fine, sand-like debris. Prevent moth damage by vacuumming the top weekly and the back side, pad and floor occasionally. Vacuums: Vacuum cleaners with a power brush or “beater bar” can shred the fringes and cause rapid wear. Sunlight: Most rug dyes are quite resistant to sun fading or bleaching. Still, ultraviolet rays are a powerful force of nature, and a rug will likely fade over time if used for years in a very sunny area. Consider sheer drapes or blinds to block some of the direct sunlight, and try to turn the rug end-for-end once a year to even out possible colour changes. Uneven Wear: A rug should be turned end-for-end once every year or two to even out wear and colour change. Try not to use a rug on a very uneven floor. An area of the floor that is raised (a loose floorboard, a transition strip from one flooring material to another, etc.) causes the part of the rug that covers it to wear much more rapidly than the rest of the rug. Summary: Although many kinds of damage can be repaired, prevention is much easier and more cost effective. Inspect the entire rug periodically for signs of wear or damage. Have your rug cleaned only when it really is dirty. When you see something wrong with your rug that is beyond your ability to rectify, don’t hesitate to call us or any reputable carpet dealer for advice. 1. Aeration and De-thatching: Early Spring - Lawn compaction impedes air, water and nutrient access to turf roots. Lawn aeration reduces soil compaction by punching holes in the soil with a coring machine. Thatch is a build-up of debris in the area between the soil surface and the blades of grass. De-thatching rakes up the top layer of unwanted thatch in the lawn. 2. Liming: Spring (When Rainfall Decreases) Lime is used on lawns to get a desirable pH, (6.0 - 7.0). Lime conditions the soil and will improve the growth of turf by reducing nutrient loss. 3. Moss Control: Spring: Great success is achieved using lawn sand for moss control. Expect to see moss turn black and die almost immediately. 4. Regular Fertilizing Program: In June use fertilizers to provide nutrients for healthy colour, root and foliage growth. A fertilizer high in Phosphorus is used in spring to help turf establish strong roots. Nitrogen is used once it warms up to make grass grow

lush green blades. Potassium is used in fall to help withstand stress, disease and winter temperatures. A fertilized lawn is stronger and better, by being more resistant to weeds and disease. 5. Proper Mowing Practices: Properly mowed lawns are more tolerant of heat and drought. Only 1/3 of the grass height should be removed at one time. Healthy lawns are kept at a height of 2” - 3”. If cut too short, part of the root system can die back, causing weeds to overtake the lawn. 6. Top Dressing and Over-seeding: Spring or Early Fall - Lawns that lack a basic level of nutrients are best served by a top dressing of nutrient-rich organic matter. For lawns that require new growth it is ideal to over-seed with the correct grass seed mix. The three best types for Vancouver are Perennial Ryegrass, Fescues and Kentucky Bluegrass. The ideal lawn has a combination of all 3 types. Shady lawns perform better with a higher percentage of Fine
Fescue in the seed blend.
