I am very excited to be publishing the first issue of Dunbar Life Magazine in partnership with Dunbar Village Business Association. The community of Dunbar is so vibrant and welcoming and it is great to see what DVBA is accomplishing on behalf of the businesses and the people that live here. September is about getting back to work, getting the kids settled in school, new programs, and enjoying the last days of summer. The 2nd Annual Dunbar Village Harvest Festival will kick off the fall season on Saturday, September 25th. October is my favourite time of year, not only because of Halloween, but because of the change in seasons with the crisp cool air, the vibrant colour of the fall foliage, pumpkins growing in the fields, sharing turkey with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day, and planning with excitement how we will dress up and decorate. The Canucks start playing hockey and we feel hopeful for the new season upon us. By early November, daylight saving time starts and we turn the clock back one hour as the days get shorter and colder. Remembrance Day is observed, and Christmas is already in the air. November 15 brings the winter issue of Dunbar Life Magazine and a new season to celebrate.

A Message from the President Dunbar Village Business Association

Welcome to our first issue of Dunbar Life Magazine: a publication that celebrates everything great about Dunbar and why we love life here! The Dunbar Village Business Association (DVBA) has partnered with Palla Media to come up with a quality publication to spotlight what is already happening in the community, while building pride in our unique neighbourhood. As this is a publication designed especially for the residents, we invite your feedback and comments. In future we may be looking for local residents and organization representatives to write short personal-account articles about why they love their neighbourhood. For the more photogenic of you, we’ll need shiny happy faces to don the cover of the magazine. If you want to contribute to future publications, contact info@dunbarvillage.ca. Depending on popularity, we hope to publish every second month and will distribute to 12,000 households through Canada Post. There’s also a digital edition at www.dunbarlife.com that is continually updated with the latest news and event information. Check out the Dunbar Life blog and community resource information, too. In this issue you will meet some of your neighbours and local merchants. Look for a profile of Olinda Vriend, owner of Olinda’s on the corner of Dunbar & W. 27th Avenue, who in September is celebrating 30 years at the same location. Also on the other end of the merchant spectrum you’ll meet Chloe Angus, a Dunbar-raised girl who opened her shop Chloe Angus Design at 4335 Dunbar just this last July. We hope that Dunbar Life will become the “go-to” information stop for events happening in our community and other items of interest. If you have an event you would like to list, please let us know! Finally, look to these pages for information about our biggest event of the year: the Dunbar Village Harvest Festival taking place on Saturday, September 25th between 11am and 3pm. There’ll be lots of family-friendly activities at all three market areas along Dunbar Street from W 16th to W 41st. Take a free ride on a vintage trolley bus from north to south to ensure that you won’t miss out on any of the action of the day. Pumpkin on the cover The cover pumpkin was supplied by Renee McLaren who grew it this summer in her community garden next to the Arbutus corridor. It was harvested before its time by roofers at an adjacent building site who tried to steal it. The McLaren family, however, caught the thieves in the act and were able to save the pumpkin from being carried away. If the pumpkin had grown to maturity, it would have been over 100 pounds as it was sown from seeds the Ms. McLaren had sent away for from a prize-winning pumpkin producer in New York. Although it is a tragedy the pumpkin was picked 2 months before its time, it will live on forever on the first cover of Dunbar Life Magazine.

What’s in your shopping cart? Alix Cameron

Since my children are now at an age where they will actually contemplate eating what we eat, my passion for cooking has been reignited. After years of painful meals where food was pushed away, dumped on the floor or just plain spat out, it’s so refreshing to eat together and have them ask for more. So I’ve dusted off my cookbooks, got myself a few new kitchen gadgets and I’m actually enjoying planning and preparing the evening meal. BK – before kids – I didn’t give too much thought to what I was buying when I shopped for food. I had a list and if it said strawberries because my recipe called for it, I bought them even though it was December. I wasn’t concerned about where my food came from just that I had it ready before my dinner guests arrived! Nowadays, when I make my frequent trips to Stongs or IGA, I carefully consider what fills my shopping cart. Having young kids, I am very aware of what I feed them. I am also keen for them to love the taste of good food. However I am no 100-miler! I do try to buy fruits and vegetables that are in season and produced locally (e.g. in the Fraser Valley or the Okanagan), with the belief that food produced nearby is safer, healthier and better tasting than food from far away. This means that I will usually skip the California strawberries, preferring to wait until June when our local berries hit the stores. It doesn’t mean that I will never buy an avocado or a pineapple I honestly couldn’t live without them. There is more and more good, local food to be found in Dunbar. With Kokopelli, Butter and Jethro’s now in the ‘hood, when I don’t feel like cooking, I can grab a delicious breakfast, lunch, or sinful treat any time of day. At Stongs I have discovered their cheese sommelier, Sandy Fountain. She is a wealth of knowledge and has frequently helped me assemble a cheese plate of local BC cheeses sure to turn tempt the nose of even the fussiest cheese connoisseur. Both Stongs and IGA are doing a better job of labeling where their produce comes from and they are both receptive to new product requests. Having so much good local food readily available and so close at hand helps to inspire me to prepare meals that are fresh and taste great. All this talk of food is making me hungry! A Day on Dunbar Jennifer McDonald

One of the reasons I love living in Dunbar is my rambles along Dunbar Street, with or without my four children. Although the outings vary like the weather, some of my favourite romps take me back to the days when shopping was just an excuse to get out and meet friends and neighbours. You have to be up early to beat the coffee shop rush, occasionally having to fight the frantic mug bearing throng – the reason – free pastry day at Starbucks. Familiar faces served up with every latte, people we may never know by name but who we subconsciously look for every day. The writer, the running enthusiast, the tired mom, the hurried businessman, the elderly lady in pink – all faces that are as part of Dunbar as the bricks and mortar themselves. With children in tow a trip to Shoppers is never just a trip to Shoppers. The pied piper himself would not dare compete with musical birthday cards. Parents grapple desperately with these yodeling cards as they watch their children lured even further, to the point of no return - the seasonal toys. Ah, the all too familiar battle cry,” Look Mom it’s only $19.99, it’s been reduced and we don’t have one!” Who needs to venture beyond the Dunbar borders for Kumon when our very own Shoppers is providing our children with numerical recognition, comparative analysis and strong verbal reasoning? And just when you think you’ve navigated the multicolored labyrinth successfully with all children in tow you realize that you have to go back and do it all again because you’re missing your Tim Horton’s voucher by 56 cents. We never need a reason to walk through Dunbar produce – it’s just part of our morning ritual. Clutching my Grande Awake tea for courage I watch as my children grab the miniature trolleys and hurl them exuberantly through the cornucopia’s packed aisles, narrowly missing fellow customers’ legs as they do their “own shopping”. “Wouldn’t it be easier to leave them at home?” I am often asked. I smile; it depends on what exactly I am setting out to do. On Dunbar we never set out to shop, we set out to visit. Dunbar is not a strip mall or a mega store where you can run in and out and barely notice you’ve done so. Dunbar is a village – a living breathing organism that is meant to be experienced and savored and if you happen to achieve some errands, well, that’s a bonus. We never pass by the bookstore without popping in. There is always something we haven’t read or think we need. I tell my children that it’s never about buying the one book you want, it’s about being aware of the tens of thousands of books out there that you didn’t buy but still lie there in wait just for you. These places quietly beseech us to take the time – the time to walk through them, the time to appreciate the many lives touched by them, the time just to be… The Roman philosopher Seneca once said, “man should have what is enough and what is essential”. I believe Dunbar gives us both. Dunbar gives us a sense of community, a reason to slow down and a chance to experience the beautiful simplicity of a time gone by. Dunbar is not just an eclectic collection of little shops; Dunbar is a way of life!

Chloe Angus

Who is Sarah MacLachlan and how did you meet? Sarah is the Director of Operations and Assistant Designer. We met through a business contact. Sarah had worked for mega Canadian fashion company, Peter Nygard, in Winnipeg and had just moved to Vancouver; at that time I was just about to launch my first collection to The Hudson Bay’s Canadian by Design Department. Sarah knew what I didn’t about garment production, she came on board to work with me that first season and we have been working together even since. We are both workaholics who have an addiction to fashion.

What is your background, interests, passion? My parents moved to a very remote area of the Sunshine Coast when I was little where they raised my three brothers, my sister, and me. We grew up on an Organic Sea Food Farm (www.totemseafarm.com) and were home schooled. I have always been a creative person with a passion for experiencing life; when I travel I love to find different fabrics and bring them home to make beautiful things that have been inspired by what I saw, or by someone I met.

I believe in clothes that are not only opulent like the Silk Dupioni and soft Jersey Lyocell, but tailored and structured as demonstrated in my use of linen suiting and crisp cotton shirtings. Like the women who wear them, the collections inspire confidence, elegance and ease. With designs that are as innovative as they are classic, I believe first and foremost in beautiful silhouettes that accentuate all body shapes and sizes without compromising my inherent eye for style.

On July 15, 2010, Chloe had the Grand Opening of her concept store and fashion design studio located at 4273 Dunbar Street. The store features her eco-chic ready-to-wear collection as well as some of her more intricate custom designs.

Why open your store on Dunbar Street? I have a history in the Dunbar area and I have seen it take on new life in the past 10 years. Old Vancouver mixed with new, young families mixed with long-time residents makes Dunbar a unique place and because my style can flatter all ages I feel I have something to offer to everyone plus I have had a book by appointment studio in the area for the past three years and have built a client base here; and did I mention that the parking is still free (a real plus for shoppers).

Are all your designs made in Vancouver? Yes! Not only do we use natural and sustainable fabrics, we run the company as a sustainable green company by producing all the garments in Vancouver at a locally owned, sweatshop-free environment. In everything from labels to buttons, a conscious decision is made when creating the product. I was so impressed with Chloe’s Button Wrap that I went for a fitting with Sarah and bought one in Bark colour. I can’t wait to wear it when the hot summer weather cools. Apparently, it is hard to stop at just one wrap!

What is your connection to Dunbar? My grandparents bought their house at 42nd and Blenheim in 1955, my parents bought their first house at 50th and Dunbar in 1975; and my husband, Gabe, and I bought our house just off of Dunbar in 1999, so my roots have always been here. When I was little my Granny used to take me to Tinkers Hatch Bakery at 33rd Ave. and Mackenzie St. for a cookie and when I turned twelve my mom took me to Olinda’s on Dunbar and Olinda made what I considered my first real dress. So there are quite a few Angus’s between Dunbar and Angus Drive. What is your favourite thing about Dunbar? The feeling of old school Vancouver. Many people have lived in the Dunbar area for a long time, and it even has some of the history of the Musqueam Indian Band on the lamp posts going down Dunbar. It is still a place where you walk down the street and go to the baker, the grocer, the pharmacist, and the florist while waving at your neighbour.

Do you have kids? No, but I have eleven nieces and nephews who all like to come and help out in the new studio.

What is the story about your little white pony? Pony? What pony? Sonny is Dunbar’s little secret. What is your favourite part of each day? Making an outfit for a lady that makes her feel great. What is a great day? When that lady comes back and tells me that her husband loved it too! How did you get into this business? Besides being born to do this, I went to fashion design school and I went after every opportunity I could to get into the industry.

Who is your inspiration? Every lady who walks through my doors inspires me. 16

Olindas

Olinda Vriend, owner of Olindas, is celebrating 30 years at 4305 Dunbar Street! I walked into Olindas and was greeted by Gina Rota’s smiling face and Olinda busy in the window display. As I waited to meet Olinda, Gina sat at the counter and started sewing as she beamed with pride at Olinda and her accomplishments over the past 30 years. She told me a story how she went to eastern Canada for vacation this year and while in the remote north, she mentioned to a couple she met that she was from Vancouver, more specifically the community of Dunbar. The woman happened to be a regular shopper at Olindas -- how far reaching is that! Olinda was so lovely and friendly, and immediately I liked her and can see why women feel so comfortable being custom fitted by her. Olinda’s mother was a seamstress and taught Olinda as a young girl in Holland how to sew. As an adult, she lived in the country in northern BC before settling in Dunbar and working as a seamstress for Bobby’s Place. But when Bobby decided to retire, Olinda’s passion for creating and sewing clothes was telling her to take this opportunity to start her own business, even though she had not considered it before. Despite being terrified, she received a loan from an unexpected source and took over the business of “Personalized Styling for Women”, and here she is 30 years later running a successful business! In the beginning, she would host home fashion parties in addition to running the store, and that helped Olinda make a name for herself and develop a following. Olinda has always hired very talented staff that stay with her long-term, like Gina who has been with her off and on for 30 years, and a skilled patternmaker Mary Joyce who was a designer for Victoria Commonwealth Games, and a Chan (now retired) who made clothes for the King of Siam. She also has seamstresses that work full-time from home. Olinda has her own label on much of the clothing in the store. So if you see a piece of clothing that you like but not the right colour or size, just order it! It is all about personalization of the clothing. Styles have changed a lot in 30 years but one constant has been her popular bathrobes and pajamas. A cutting room is in the back of the store where designs are turned into patterns then prepared for the seamstresses to make into clothing. Sewing machines in the store are for convenient alteration services. You can find ready-made coordinating clothes from other designers such as sweaters, pants, scarves and more. Olinda constantly researches fashion and style with her customers in mind and goes out her way to fulfill their needs. Often her customers have special needs, are hard to fit, or have medical issues (sometimes requesting large orders for specialty items like hospital gowns). The satisfaction of knowing that she helped outfit someone in need in a comfortable environment is what brings her joy. Who is that doggy in the window? A true Dunbar community dog, Yoshi is a flat-coated retriever that has a few owners who share her. Yoshi spends her days in Olinda’s store window, her nights with Fibi, a local nurse, and mornings at the neighbour’s house behind the store. Olinda is happy because she loves the community of Dunbar, is able to be creative, and sees that she is fulfilling a need that so many women have to find clothes that fit. Very satisfying! Celebrate with Olinda! You are invited to celebrate 30 years in Dunbar with Olinda and her staff on Wednesday, September 15th. Everything in the store will be on sale, even the new Fall items. There will be balloons, goodies, a special sale, and 20% of all sales will be donated to Seva, her favourite charity. 18
