A Message from DVBA Karen Wyder, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to our winter issue of Dunbar Life!
Sue Dvorak about winter rain and how it is a unique part of life on the “wet coast” to help you keep things in perspective.
With the success of our fall events, Dunbar Village Harvest Festival and Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village, we now focus on the biggest event of the year: the Holiday Season! Look for our Dunbar Village Gift Guide featuring local retailers with some ideas to show you how easy it is to shop close to home for all your holiday needs.
We congratulate Marineview Preschool for recently receiving a Child Care Legacy Award in recognition of 40 years of outstanding childcare service.
In this issue, you’ll read about Tryphe Specialty Foods. Plan to stop by and say hello to owner, Jacqueline Cheung, who would be happy to help you create a gift basket stocked with gourmet essentials.
Dunbar Village for the Holidays is on Saturday, December 20 from 10am to 3pm – see page 55 for full details. Bring the family out for free old-fashioned horse carriage rides. Dunbar Village Business Association’s elves will be serving free hot chocolate and offering other goodies!
We’ve also featured Sher’s Stationery 2000 for very good reason. They have a full-service post office, business services, gift-wrap, passport photos, Sears delivery pickup, gifts, stationery, children’s toys, puzzles, arts and crafts, home hardware, kitchen essentials, leather belts and purses, fashion jewellery and select ladies wear. How do you feel about the change in weather? Enjoy another humorous article by

Get to know Maggie Burtinshaw, one of Dunbar Village Business Association’s “Dig Dunbar” volunteers, who is making a difference by beautifying the street one plot at a time. She is certainly a Champion of Dunbar Village and is profiled on page 30. Keep an eye out for the installation of 18 new winter plantings that we know will receive lots of TLC from the Dunbar businesses and community.
Dunbar merchants have so much to offer and they are ready to make your holiday shopping and dining memorable. We encourage you to shop locally to find unique products and keep your local economy strong. On behalf of the Dunbar Village Business Association, we wish you all the joy the holiday season brings and a happy 2015.

Sher’s Stationery 2000 by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Two years ago Salim and Sher Jamal purchased Stationery 2000 from a friend who was retiring. While the Jamals did not have retail experience it seemed like an interesting prospect to try something radically different from their previous careers (Sher Jamal had worked with the airlines and Salim Jamal is an engineer). To personalize the business they added “Sher’s” to the company’s name and commenced their new occupation as merchants. While it may appear on the surface that the couple and their staff run the shop, they are quick to give plenty of credit to their five grown children who all participate in the development and planning of the business. They also assist with product displays and attend gift shows with their parents. All of their children are remarkably successful in their own right with assorted university degrees and careers. 8
Salim Jamal reports that the business could just as easily be called The Village Store and Post Office. This is how many clients refer to the shop, which he compares to a general store. Here you will find medium to high end products. He says, “There is a bit of everything for everyone of every age.”
The business could just as easily be called The Village Store and Post Office. The shop is located across the street from IGA on West 41st Avenue. From the exterior there is no way of knowing just how large the interior is, and indeed how many products are contained within the space. The store also contains a Canada Post outlet.
www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015
Postal services include post office boxes, stamps and shipping, address changes, mail holds, student loans, passport forms and photographs. They also provide boxes, tape, packaging materials, giftwrap and bags. Business services include photocopying, printing, scanning, fax, lamination and banner printing services. They recently introduced the five-minute passport photograph service that has been increasing steadily in popularity. Citizenship and visa photographs are also available. Do you like shopping from the Sears Wish Book? Sher’s Stationery 2000 is a pickup point for deliveries, which Dunbar seniors in particular really appreciate. They are also pleased to assist senior customers to access and navigate the internet.
The store’s products range from stationery to regular and seasonal gift items, children’s toys, puzzles, arts and crafts, home hardware, kitchen essentials, leather belts and purses, fashion jewellery and select ladies wear. For the upcoming holiday season the Jamals are introducing a number of new products.
They are excited to be selling hand crafted and hand painted purses and handbags, dress ponchos, pashminas, design throws, ceramic and natural shell lamps, Canadian made pillowcase paint kits, puzzles and plenty of stocking stuffers. Sher Jamal is the buyer for the shop while Salim Jamal is the purchaser for the post office. They alternate seamlessly between the two divisions of the shop while their employee Maria Menor handles the front counter as well as the Sears desk.

The business is known for its fast, friendly and personal service. The atmosphere is akin to a community-meeting place where the owners know many of their loyal customers, and clients often run into other neighbours.
The business is known for its fast, friendly and personal service. They strive to source products that are difficult to find locally, while seeking good quality merchandise at competitive prices. The Jamals are very receptive to customer feedback and are eager to continue to add additional products that clients are seeking. December is the only time of the year the business is open seven days a week. Generally Sunday is a day off and the Jamals savour this day to catch up with their family over an extended breakfast as three of their five children remain living at home. The couple loves to cook. Salim Jamal uses his free time to tend to the garden and house while Sher Jamal belongs to a choir and enjoys oil painting.
for the Dunbar Village Business Association (DVBA). In this capacity he visited and distributed information to businesses in his block. This year he was appointed to the board of directors. His role as DVBA treasurer includes budgeting and ensuring that funds are allocated properly as directed by the board. The Jamals believe in shopping locally because it keeps the jobs within the community. They feel it helps small businesses thrive and retains the character of the community. Small independents can respond much faster than big box stores through personal service, which helps to create a feeling of family and community. Shopping within your neighbourhood also helps to get people out of their cars and walking about. This holiday season take the challenge and see if you can do the bulk of your shopping by foot in the Dunbar area. At Sher’s Stationery 2000 you can also do double duty – shop and mail your Christmas parcels at the same time! Sher’s Stationery 2000 3552 W. 41st Avenue Vancouver BC V6N 3E6 Telephone 604-261-2001

Tryphe Specialty Foods by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
From the moment I walked into Tryphe Specialty Foods, owner Jacqueline Cheung made me feel right at home. We sat down at a window seat table where I indulged in a 49th Parallel drip coffee and some tasty baked goods (apple cake, dark pumpkin chocolate brownie and lavender vanilla shortbread), while she shared her story. What inspires her to run a small business? She says,
“It brings me joy to make people happy through the products I sell.” I asked Cheung how she chose the name Tryphe (pronounced tri-fee) for her store that opened almost two years ago. In her search for a name she discovered this Greek word and felt it was a perfect fit as “delicacies” are at the heart of her fine food shop. After exploring various areas to situate her business she determined Dunbar was the 18
most desirable neighbourhood (and the most beautiful too). The storefront was formerly a flower shop and underwent an extensive renovation. The earth tone colours are inviting, as are elegant touches such as chandeliers and décor ranging from friendly garden gnomes to pots of lavender. With a marketing and business plan in place, an unexpected blessing came her way; she and her husband were overjoyed to discover they were expecting a baby. This also posed a challenge, to establish and run her new business while she was pregnant and afterwards as a new mother. Now that her daughter is a toddler Cheung is coming up for air and dreaming even bigger dreams for Tryphe. She envisions offering soups and sandwiches for the lunch crowd. She is working on expanding the selection of pre-made take home meals. Cheung highly recommends Tryphe’s homemade lamb stew, curries and soups that are sold frozen. Take them home, heat them up and nobody has to know that you had a little help with dinner that night!
www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015
Cheung is excited to be serving Vancouver’s own 49th Parallel coffee, brewed individually for customers one cup at a time for optimum freshness. A few of the gourmet pantry essentials that line the well stocked shelves include vinegar, honey, oil, salsa, spreads, mustard, dried pasta, grilling sauces, tea and hot chocolate. Many of the products are fair trade and gluten-free.
Tryphe is best known for its quality meat. Cheung says Tryphe is best known for its quality meat. Customers come from across the Lower Mainland for the aged beef steaks, along with Australian lamb racks, pork chops, pork belly, duck breasts, all natural chicken products from the Fraser Valley, and naturally smoked bacon. Ocean Wise seafood is also sold. In the display glass a sampling of what you will find includes wild fish (sockeye salmon, halibut, sablefish), shellfish (crab, sea urchin) and seasonal fish (wild sea bass, wild monkfish and lobster tails). If you are unable to travel to Tryphe, Cheung is happy to provide a home delivery service to select areas for purchases over $50. Simply
submit your order by phone, text or via WhatsApp and for a small delivery fee it will arrive at your doorstep. Baked goods are a new addition to the store. A part-time baker comes in several times a

week and customers have been giving two thumbs up to the lavender vanilla shortbread cookies, cheddar bay scones, rocky road cookies, and the Okanagan ambrosia apple cake. For Cheung food is all about quality ingredients. She says that a healthy lifestyle includes eating less meat, while the meat you consume should be high quality. She suggests it is better for your health to eat less food in general but to deeply appreciate the food that you eat. Cheung moved to Vancouver with her family from Hong Kong 20 years ago. The fresh air and beautiful scenery were the first things to get her attention. She also noticed that the people are friendly and she thought Vancouver would be a perfect city to raise a family.
In addition, Cheung is an avid cook and just as she enjoys making people happy at Tryphe Specialty Foods, she also derives pleasure from cooking and entertaining at home. Are you looking for a unique Christmas present? Gift certificates are always popular, or Cheung and her staff will be happy to assist in building a gift basket. You are also welcome to design your own basket. Stock it with kitchen essentials and you are bound to make a chef very happy on Christmas morning. Tryphe Specialty Foods 4495 Dunbar Street Vancouver BC V6S 2G4 Telephone 604-879-7439 www.tryphe.ca
Being a part of the Dunbar business community is very important to Cheung and she is very fond of all her loyal customers. She feels independent businesses build strong communities by connecting neighbours, and through their contribution to the local economy. She says, “When shopping locally you also receive excellent customer service and advice directly from business owners.“ This busy mother and entrepreneur can be found at Tryphe five days a week as she juggles childcare with her husband. She also has assistance from four part-time staff. Away from the shop Cheung values her time with her husband and their little girl. They enjoy going for walks in the park and spending time at the playground, or sifting through antique stores in search of treasures. 20

Marineview Preschool: 40 Years of Excellence by Sarah Gordon Located within Dunbar’s Marineview Chapel is Marineview Preschool, which was founded in 1974. Pastoral Team Leader Mark Anderson and his wife Petra Anderson (Pastoral liaison for the preschool) are thrilled to report that the provincial government recently bestowed the preschool with a Child Care Legacy Award in recognition of 40 years of outstanding childcare service. Curious to learn more about this awardwinning preschool, I had a conversation with teacher Lisa Anthony during her lunch hour. That afternoon, despite inclement weather, the dedicated afternoon class was heading off for a walk in Pacific Spirit Park in search of insects, to take in autumn colours and explore the natural world. Anthony has been teaching at Marineview Preschool for 16 years and prior to that her three children attended the school. She has been a member of the Marineview Christian community church for 35 years. She says each child comes with his or her personality and learning style. She has seen children arrive with very little English and leave two years later conversing easily with friends. Shy children may begin preschool clinging to their parents and after just a few classes happily wave goodbye to parents as they run to join the classroom fun. She says, “To see the joy, excitement or understanding on a child's face when I acknowledge that they shared a toy, or they completed a puzzle
by themselves or celebrate that they now know how to spell their own name, that is what gives me satisfaction.” Alison Wedley, the preschool’s supervisor, has been teaching at Marineview Preschool since 2001. She began her career in childcare in 1992. Wedley is passionate about working with preschoolers and says seeing them master a new skill is enormously satisfying. Both teachers believe children learn best when they are playing. Wedley says, “If they are interested in something, they will participate much longer, and learn without realizing it.” Mornings begin with free play. The goal is to have a pressure free start to the day. Crafts, painting at easels, math and science (included in the four-year-old program) are part of the curriculum. In preparation for kindergarten preschoolers are taught the alphabet, phonics, the calendar, colours, and how to recognize and print their names. Both teachers believe it's not just the classroom, the materials, the teachers or the children that creates the wonderful learning atmosphere. It's when it all comes together and everyone is involved in the learning process that the special moments happen. The caring and nurturing teaching team are Licensed Certified Early Childhood Educators, with valid first aid certificates and criminal record checks. The centre is overseen by a committee consisting of members from Marineview Chapel, parent representatives and the preschool’s teachers and is open to the entire community. At full capacity the school can accommodate 60 students spread between the three classes of 20. A variety of schedule choices are offered for the three and four-year-old programs. Consult www.marineview.org for details. It’s not too late to enroll - a few spots still remain. Registration takes place in January for the following September.

www.HigherGroundGardens.com How to Plant Bulbs in Your Garden What I love about plants like elephant ear, irises, tulips and daffodils is that they are all perennial bulbs. They will flower year after year providing wonderful colour.
Best Time of Year:
There are two times of the year to plant bulbs. In fall, plant any bulbs that flower in the spring. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses are some of the most popular spring flowering bulbs. In spring, plant iris, gladiolus, dahlia and elephant ear bulbs. These are also known as summer flowering bulbs.
The Planting:
This is your chance to clean out weeds and work the soil. Bulbs like to be planted in well-drained, loose soil. The rule of thumb for planting bulbs is to plant at a depth equal to 2-3 times its height.
When planting, use your hand trowel to dig in to the soil and place your bulbs tipup in the hole. If you are using squirrel cages, place them over the bulb and cover everything with soil. These are available at your local garden centre, or you can make them using chicken wire. Once planted, I like to cover the planting area with a layer of decomposed mulch. The bark mulch protects the new bulbs from cold weather and gradually enriches the soil as it breaks down. Remember to water the bulbs in when you’re done and that’s it! Sit back and watch as your garden provides a spectacular show next season.

A Champion of Dunbar Village: Maggie Burtinshaw by Sarah Gordon
Maggie Burtinshaw digs gardening. She is one of Dunbar Village Business Association’s “Dig Dunbar” volunteers who is making a difference by beautifying the streets, one plot at a time. Burtinshaw is an active senior who has more energy than many people half her age. She ensures that she gets outdoors rain or shine, several times a day, as she loves the fresh air. She meditates and practices yoga. She walks using Nordic poles as it is great for her posture. Burtinshaw says she does not experience gardening aches and pains because she doesn’t crouch and instead will do a full bend when she tends her plot. She adds that because her garden is little
it doesn’t cause her back problems as she doesn’t have to labour over it for lengthy periods. Until recently she has been responsible for a garden in front of More Bikes. With the pending 2015 demolition of the west side block of Dunbar Street between W. 26th and W. 27th (RBC will remain standing) her garden plot is immediately being relocated before the winter weather arrives. Downsizing her garden is not an option for Burtinshaw. Instead, she has elected to upsize and take on three garden plots in front of Vancity. The credit union is thrilled to be a beneficiary of Burtinshaw’s gift of gardening. With the assistance of KJM Country Gardens, Greengo and the DVBA, her current garden will be relocated and topped up with additional perennials. During the hot summer months Burtinshaw sweeps the sidewalk around her garden, weeds and waters daily. Her garden contains catmint, bluegrasses, blue geraniums, sedum, and evergreen plants. She says tending to a garden plot is a lot like having a dog as people stop to chat. Burtinshaw chuckles and says she is a recognizable personality in the neighbourhood as she can often be seen carrying a broom up and down the street, and she will don a cowboy hat to shade her head from the sun. When asked why she volunteers Burtinshaw replies, “You get way more back when you volunteer. It’s really quite selfish!” Prior to being a Dig Dunbar volunteer she was involved for six years with St. Mary’s church weekly community meal program. She found this work deeply satisfying. As for other gardening initiatives, Burtinshaw previously had a “guerrilla garden” in Dunbar. It was a huge investment of time to
30
www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015
maintain, as it was half a lane in size. She has given it up but is proud to see other people have picked up where she left off. Burtinshaw would like to draw awareness to the Dig Dunbar project and hopes other community members will join the volunteer team. She is grateful to the DVBA for having starting the beautification program. The location of the gardens so close to the road and the lack of any protection around the plants can prove challenging. Burtinshaw’s wish is that people use tender loving care around the plots so they can flourish. In addition to the three new gardens in front of Vancity, the DVBA will be planting 18 new gardens in front of businesses. Burtinshaw is hopeful that more businesses and other community volunteers will join in to help expand the program next spring. Maggie Burtinshaw, a big tip of the hat and a huge thank you for your labour of love and tireless work to make Dunbar Village a better place for everyone.

Winter Rain For most of Canada winter means snow. But not Vancouver. We get rain. Lots of rain. We get rain that can be described in a single weather forecast by four different words that all mean different kinds of rain. We are famous for our rain. We are also famous for our inability to deal with snow but that is a different story.
When it rains for weeks in winter Vancouverites encourage each other by saying “well, at least we don’t have to shovel it!” as we head out the door. Daily life carried out amidst a wall of outdoor water has its particular perils. The downtown core appears as a sea of migrating umbrellas as people negotiate the streets and sidewalks. Some have suggested that the city offer a course in umbrella etiquette for the uninitiated, teaching mainly the awareness of the three dimensional space actually taken up by an umbrella and of maneuvers that put eyeballs at risk. Many a hardcore Vancouverite has given up on umbrellas entirely: who wants to have one hand reserved for umbrella duty five months a year? Those rain city dwellers just buy a impermeable raincoat with a real hood, not a ‘pretend hood’, and forge out in that, “hands-free” as it were. 40
by Sue Dvorak Many a youth in Vancouver gives up on even wearing a raincoat, the ultimate submission to uncool. So when it is pouring out these kids put on the ever-present sweatshirt hoodie just to drive their mothers mad. Cotton fleece hoodies absorb moisture, making them less than ideal for rain and I suppose that is the point. We should all appreciate our kids’ safe rebellion coming in the form of nonsensical outerwear. Just smile and hand over the hoodie, Mom! There are other particular challenges posed by ever-present rain, many we are all familiar with. For those people with naturally wavy hair, our weather ensures that their hair constantly appears unruly and unkept, as if having just walked the dog during a storm, which is especially true after say, having just walked the dog in a storm. Odd things happen too, like an afternoon spent in wet jeans staining the skin on your legs blue or the change section of your wallet becoming a swimming pool for coins as you search about for money for a parking meter during a downpour. I once had occasion to have to nurse a baby in the rain which was incredibly awkward and must have made the baby wonder if Mom was trying to provide just a drink of water this time. But somehow we just ignore it and carry on. We cannot be like our house guests who say they will “just wait til it stops raining” before they go on their outing. Once a person has
www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015
the right gear and a routine, the rain gradually becomes of no consequence. Years ago when I commuted daily by bike I remember being lost in thought while waiting in traffic at a stoplight during a deluge. I was taken by surprise when I noticed the terribly pained look on the face of the woman staring at me from the car right next to me: she looked so sorry for me I wondered at first what on earth was wrong, not even considering the water pouring down my face. It had not even crossed my mind that that she should be feeling sorry for me riding in the rain. We all definitely start out thinking that rain is fun. Give any toddler a pair of rain boots and ‘muddy buddy’ pants and he or she will splash and stomp and run around in the rain without any encouragement. Pure joy. And this attitude can actually continue if given the opportunity. Countless times I have felt sorry for kids and coaches out at evening soccer practice in monsoon conditions only to arrive for a pick up to an almost festive atmosphere. With driving rain illuminated by the field lights, kids charge about after practice, water flying from their feet as they run, while blessed coaches stand talking and laughing. How many times, against all odds, has a completely soaked, pink cheeked, exhilarated kid thrown him or herself into
our car after a sporting practice in the rain exclaiming, “That was fun!” Our rain experience can even create an advantage. A sudden race day deluge of rain for a rowing regatta or a marathon, at home or elsewhere, spells disaster for many athletes but makes Vancouver athletes smile quietly. How many hours upon hours upon hours have Vancouver rowers or runners spent training in the rain? Pelting rain, shower rain, sleeting rain, sideways rain, gusty rain: they have trained through it all. This they know what to do with. They are so ready. For the rest of us mere mortals rainy days also give us the opportunity and “permission” somehow to slow down, get cosy and curl up at home a bit, something that health and lifestyle advisors say we could all use more of. This too we should be good at it. We have a love-hate relationship with rain, but maybe mostly love. Whether born here or moved here we take pride in our rain. It’s our thing. No, it’s not -38 C with a wind chill factor of -55 ... and that’s okay with us. Our rain is something particular, unique and a part of how we live. So pay no attention to ads for snow blowers. Look instead for a good peaked hood and never mind the rain. This is winter in Vancouver.
