A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association part of the success of this event for the last four years. Every October, Valerie hosts a Meet and Mingle event where businesses come together to listen to a guest speaker and pick up their Halloween candy starter kits. There is never enough DVBA candy to meet the demand of this successful event, so a big thank you as well to all the Dunbar businesses who contributed additional candy and the time and effort to make this such a terrific event for families in Dunbar.
Welcome to Dunbar Life’s winter issue. Inside you will find our Dunbar Village Gift Guide featuring fabulous suggestions on where to shop locally for all your holiday needs. Dunbar merchants have so much to offer; get ready to make this year’s holiday shopping memorable. We encourage you to support local businesses and keep Dunbar a vibrant neighborhood. Since our last issue, we hosted another successful Dunbar Village Harvest Festival. Many thanks to the businesses, community groups and volunteers for making it so much fun for the community. Additionally, our Trick-or-Treat event had a huge turnout of families in costumes and we were lucky to have such a beautiful day to hold this beloved event. We would like to especially thank Valerie Martin from Martin Brothers Funeral Services who has been an integral

Dunbar Village for the Holidays takes place this year on Sunday, December 9 from 10am to 3pm in all three areas of Dunbar (see the poster on page 9). Join us for a festive afternoon of shopping, carolling and merriment. Tour all three areas of Dunbar in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage. Friendly elves will be handing out a holiday gift and will be serving complimentary hot chocolate. This will also be a great opportunity to give back as the Dunbar Village Business Association will be collecting donations for the Food Bank. We are very pleased that Vancity has stepped forward to make the DVBA’s holiday event even more successful by collecting Food Bank donations in November and December in their branch. It will be exciting to see this collection grow in the branch during these months! New street banners will be arriving in Dunbar Village in Spring 2019, and the DVBA is asking for your input to choose the design you would like to see on the streets until fall arrives. Vote for your choice on the DVBA’s new website www.dunbarvillage.ca. See all the details on page 43.

In this issue, we feature two businesses: one you know and love and one that will soon become a favourite! Dunbar Greetings has been a community fixture on Dunbar Street for 31 years. Read the article to learn how Bilkish Jaffer and Salman Kassam have introduced products and services to meet their changing and growing customers’ needs over the years. Jeffrey Ho, owner of Blight’s Home Hardware, opened a new Benjamin Moore Paint store called West Side Paint & Decorating in mid-August. The official grand opening at 3354 Dunbar Street will be on November 17. This will be a great

opportunity to explore the store, learn about next year’s colour palette and congratulate Jeffrey on this new venture. Our popular “Ask An Expert” features Boulevard Dry Cleaners, Image Optometry and Sage Construction. We will continue to bring you great advice and answers to your questions from local merchants in every issue. Email any questions you may have for Dunbar’s experts to info@dunbarvillage.ca. Autumn Garden Clean Up Tricks The real pay-off for a fall garden clean up comes in spring. Imagine starting your spring garden with less weeds, less tree seeds and less work.
Fall Clean Up Must-Do’s that Benefit Gardeners Rake all leaves off any lawn areas. Leaves left behind will cause the grass to rot underneath. Do you have trees near your property that drop seeds? Examples include maple, oak and chestnut trees. Be sure to rake up all leaves and tree seeds from your garden, to prevent all the little seedlings from sprouting in spring. Replace this natural leaf cover with a covering of composted bark mulch. You will protect plants from fluctuating winter temperatures and provide a source of nutrients come spring.
2015-02-02 12:32 PM
Protect Your Hedges, Small Trees and Large Shrubs Remove leaves that are struck in the branch structure of your hedges and large shrubs. Cutting off the dead flowers from big shrubs such as Hydrangeas will protect your plants if there is a snow fall. For small trees such as Japanese maples, stripping the leaves off also helps snow fall right through the branch structure instead of lying on top of the tree.
Having a Tidy Garden that Benefits Wildlife Too When cutting back perennials, or deadheading flowers on shrubs, leave some selected seed heads for birds and wildlife to harvest during the cold winter months when not much food supply is available.

Dunbar Greetings: Your One Stop Tea & Business Supply Shop Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
Dunbar Greetings has been a community fixture for 31 years. Like the neighbourhood, it has evolved under the ownership of Bilkish Jaffer and Salman Kassam who have introduced products and services to meet their customers’ needs. The shop originally housed a Canada Post franchise that Dunbar residents fought hard to secure; a petition of 5,000 names was signed and the outlet was in place for 10 years until the contract was terminated due to required costly upgrades that were prohibitive for the small shop. Dunbar Greetings became a one-stop shop for business needs. They introduced photocopying, printing, stationery; fax services and greeting cards. They also offer DHL and FedEx shipping services. Bilkish mentions, “We started with a very small copying machine making about 1,000 12
copies a month. In our heyday we had three photocopiers making over 100,000 copies a month before the technological advancement and the opening of mega stores. Our sales dropped so we diversified and started to explore different ways to expand our business.”
“Our store is like a trading post where people in the neighbourhood bump into one another.” Bilkish Jaffer She adds, “Dunbar’s demographics began to change. The area became unaffordable for young people and many of our customers left the area. This is how we started selling tea, spices and ready to eat foods.” www.DunbarLife.com
Dunbar Greetings began selling tea in 1993. “Today we carry over 100 varieties of loose tea. Our motto is to sell quality tea at affordable prices. We buy bulk tea from a supplier who sells ethically and socially responsible tea. Our supplier ensures that the tea estates provide education and health care for the families of tea estate workers. The labels and packaging are done on the premises to pass the savings on to our customers and provide a living for us,” says Salman.
Green teas are a staple in Asian countries and are lauded for being high in antioxidants. Other teas include Matcha, Rooibos, black teas, fruity teas, Pu-erh, and Oolong. The business partners strive for excellent customer service and judging by their online rave reviews they succeed.
Dunbar Greetings also sells samosas, finger foods and spices.
“Tea is our passion.” Salman Kassam There is more to tea than simply being a warm and comforting beverage; some contain antioxidants while others help boost the immune system. Studies have shown that some teas help to prevent illnesses and diseases. Functional teas are an exciting new line found at Dunbar Greetings. These blends are comprised of herbs, teas and flowers and are purported to treat specific ailments. www.DunbarLife.com
13
Tasty treats abound. Samosas, Jamaican patties, katchoris, patras, stuffed chicken rotis and stuffed vegetable rotis are all sold and make great lunches, appetizers or party food. Christmas is just around the bend and Dunbar Greetings is a great place for gifts and stocking stuffers. If you are scratching your head for ideas why not try mini bags of loose-leaf tea, essential oils or bath salts? Sadly, the building that houses Dunbar Greetings is up for redevelopment and this will be the shop’s last Christmas in this location. The storefront will close in May 2019. Dunbar Greetings will continue to have an online presence, which is expanding, and
14
they will be adding new products. Free delivery will be offered to Dunbar customers who spend $60 or more on tea, spices and finger foods. They would like to thank all of the customers who have supported them over the years. Bilkish says, “We hope they will stay in touch as they are like family to us. They will be missed a lot.” We know Dunbar residents will mirror this sentiment as they say goodbye to this well loved long-term business. West Side Paint & Decorating: Dunbar’s New Home Decorating Destination Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
For over 70 years Blight’s Home Hardware has been serving the Dunbar community. It is packed with a wide selection of products for yard work and household projects, but there was one key product missing that customers had been requesting —Benjamin Moore paints.
West Side Paint & Decorating opened in mid-August and is having its official grand opening on November 17.
Without any room to spare at the well stocked hardware store, owner Jeffrey Ho decided to open another store five doors down to accommodate the demand.
Benjamin Moore paint is West Side Paint & Decorating’s main focus, however the store also carries Hunter Douglas blinds, York Wallcoverings and Robert Allen fabrics.
This is Jeffrey’s first Benjamin Moore store; he already owns three Home Hardware locations. In addition to Blight’s Home Hardware, he owns Gandy’s Home Hardware located on West Fourth Avenue and Davie Village Home Hardware.
Jeffrey says, “Dunbar is an awesome community of hard working people, many of whom love to keep their homes current and stylish. Our store offers a hub of creativity, currently not available in this area for customers, designers and contractors to come together, and be inspired by our
20
www.DunbarLife.com
James Nelson, Debby Joubert and Aisling Ely wonderful selection of paint, blinds, wall coverings and fabrics. Our store allows you to see all of these elements together and choose the best options to create the home of your dreams.” Jeffrey mentions, “We have a fantastic design studio located upstairs that showcases these brands, including a display showing the Hunter Douglas blinds in action.” The design studio is a place where customers can relax, have a cup of coffee and chat with the store’s knowledgeable staff. They can peruse wall covering and fabric books, and it is also a space to host in-store colour and blind consultations. The kiddie corner allows little ones to keep busy while their parents look around the store. West Side Paint & Decorating’s staff includes store manager Debby Joubert who runs the day-to-day side of the store and has extensive knowledge in all areas. James Nelson’s expertise is the Hunter Douglas blinds and with a background in architectural design, he is a trove of knowledge www.DunbarLife.com
and ideas. Aisling Ely is the colour consultant and also manages social media and marketing. Aisling, Debby and James are all available to assist customers as they choose paint colours and determine which type of paint best suits their needs. They also offer advice on paint application and painting supplies. Colour consultations either in store or at home help clients choose the best colours of paint to suit their living space. Aisling mentions, “At home consultations can be enlightening for the consumer.” The skilled design team gets a chance to see the existing colour palette and décor, providing a springboard to make colour suggestions to create a beautifully coherent living space.
If you know the colour you want, it can be matched or the closest Benjamin Moore colour can be found with a state of the art colour-matching machine. 21
In mid-October Benjamin Moore revealed its Colour of the Year for 2019, a sophisticated gray called Metropolitan AF-690. Described as “calm, composed and effortlessly sophisticated,” it is supported by Colour Trends 2019, a collection of 15 colours that range from quiet neutrals to deep, ambient colours for more of a statement or feature wall.
22
West Side Paint & Decorating’s staff also provide in store and home consultations for Hunter Douglas blinds to help determine which style, colour and finish best suits a client’s needs. In addition, they demonstrate their ease of use – options include either manual or automatic. These blinds can even be set up to work from your smart phone!
www.DunbarLife.com
Jeffery reports, “Everyone has been so welcoming of the new store; they are delighted to see it all come together.”
Mark you calendar for Saturday, November 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The store’s grand opening will be a fun-filled day of family entertainment. Special guest Maria Killam (a renowned colour expert) will cut the ribbon and be giving away copies of her book all about choosing the perfect white.
“We are excited about choosing colours and helping clients navigate through the vast amount of choices available. Also, we are happy that the upstairs design studio is being so well received by our customers; they love seeing the blinds in action and taking the time to sit, chat and enjoy the store at their leisure,” he says.
There will also be door prizes, goody bags (be sure to get there early!), promotions and prizes. Amongst the prizes will be a $500 Hunter Douglas gift card, a $200 painting utilities goody bag as well as a kid’s prize. Entertainment will include the Z95.3 radio street crew, a balloon artist, colouring competition, origami, face painting, contests and raffles. Food and beverages will also be provided.
Like Blight’s, West Side Paint & Decorating will also be actively involved in the community. Jeffery belongs to the Dunbar Village Business Association (he’s a board member) and he got his new business involved with the Harvest Festival. They plan to partake in future festivals and events organized by the BIA.

Calling All Peewee Players Wanna Lead off and Steal Bases – Come Play 7 Innings With Us! Vancouver Community Baseball - Baseball After Little League Vancouver Community Baseball (VCB) has been an active, non-profit baseball organization since 1994. The League’s mandate is to provide an opportunity for girls and boys to play baseball at all levels; from recreational to elite travelling teams. VCB’s boundaries are west of Fraser Street and north/south, from Burrard Inlet to the Fraser River. Teams play their home games at Chaldecott Park, Hillcrest Park and/or Trafalgar Park. These local parks are integral to creating and maintaining our “community” feel. In the upcoming 2019 season we are ready to welcome the influx of many new Peewee players from District 1 as Little League Canada has lowered the Peewee age from 13 to 12. District 1 includes players from Dunbar LL, Jericho LL, Kerrisdale LL and Little Mountain LL. VCB welcomes Peewee players who turn 12 or 13 years of age during the 2019 season based on the calendar year (minimum age of 11 at the start of 2019 and maximum age of 13 at the end of 2019). VCB relies heavily on our volunteer and sponsorship support. The League has several volunteers who continue to actively participate long after their children have aged out of their baseball years! The League also has long time local sponsors who provide their support to ensure that our players have the opportunity to play baseball locally. We sincerely thank our loyal sponsors and our dedicated coaches and executive! www.DunbarLife.com
VCB’s parent association is BC Baseball (www.bcminorbaseball.org) the largest baseball organization in BC; with over 18,000 registered players. VCB has many age tiers of play: Peewee 12-13, Bantam 14-15, Midget 1618 and LMBA 18-45. Eligibility falls within the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. What VCB is most proud of is that our youth can continue to enjoy playing baseball, long after their Little League days – and that we develop, “a sense of belonging to our community” through the great game of baseball. Registration for the new season begins November 1, 2018 for Peewee and January 1, 2019 for Bantam and Midget players. We look forward to seeing you all in 2019!
Let’s play ball!

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert Why should I bring my dry cleaning to you? I am always smiling and friendly! I have been in the dry cleaning business for 35 years. In February 2017, I moved my business from East Boulevard in Kerrisdale to Dunbar, where I took over Pressed 4 Time’s former space, next to the Shell gas station. Using the latest technology, my computerized machine ensures that your clothing is properly treated and cleaned. All cleaning is done on site using eco-friendly products. We can get your dry cleaning done in as little as two hours. You can trust your wedding dress, draperies, suit, coats, sweaters and other garments will be cared for professionally. We also take great pride in our alterations and competitive prices. You can easily park in the lane, in the space in front of our window, or on W 41st Avenue. I look forward to seeing you soon!

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert How do I avoid digital eye strain? If your work requires constant screen time, we suggest purchasing a pair of specially designed eyeglasses referred to as “computer glasses,” which is a new lens technology that is customengineered to protect your eyes from blue light, glare and other environmental stressors. They are available with or without a prescription. Other methods you can use include the 20-20-20 rule; for every 20 minutes that you’re working up close, take a 20 second break to look at something 20 feet further away. This will break the movement path of your eyes on screen and allow them to refresh. Eye protection from digital eye strain isn’t just necessary for long term computer users, but for casual users as well. Blue light emitted from our phones and televisions can be harsh for eyes even for short periods of time. That’s why we recommend adding the Blue-Violet Light Protection coating to any prescription eyewear to ensure comfortability at all times. 44

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert What are the benefits of using a contractor? Hiring a qualified and licensed builder gives you peace of mind that you are getting experience and knowledge that saves homeowners time and money. Sage’s team of qualified tradespeople and suppliers bring value to your project. As builders, we create a realistic timeline and oversee it from start to finish. Homeowners who hire subtrades on their own do not receive the builder’s discount and can run into problems with coordinating and sequencing the trades, resulting in delays and extra costs.
James Wise, Owner
Always ask for at least three references from a contractor. SAGE CONSTRUCTION Be cautious if the answers aren’t what you like. Request 1-3349 Dunbar Street a realistic budget and a schedule that explains all the Vancouver BC, V6S 2B9 steps of work required and details of the materials to be 604-569-2692 used. Do online research and be fully informed. A signed james.wise@sageconstruction.ca contract is a valuable document to keep the contractor www.sageconstruction.ca on task. Be aware, there are almost always changes where consultation is necessary. Communication and trust is key to a successful project. Ask questions, be informed and work together for a wonderful outcome. www.DunbarLife.com
