DUNBAR VILLAGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
Message from President, Vicki Bell
Spring has arrived in all its glory, and we welcome the warm, sunny days with open arms! Dunbar’s streets look so beautiful, with cherry tree blossoms alongside cheerful perennials. New summer banners and beautiful hanging baskets will soon be arriving in Dunbar. Thank you to the DVBA Board who is always working hard to bring beauty to Dunbar Village. The Board decided to add another set of banners to the annual cycle in order to extend the life of Dunbar’s spring banners.
Spring is a motivating season, whether you feel inspired to do some spring cleaning, get out for a walk or bike ride, train for a run (good luck to everyone registered for the Vancouver Sun Run and BMO Vancouver Marathon!), or weed and prepare your garden beds for the colourful months ahead.
It is also a time for family gatherings. Celebrate Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June at a local restaurant or plan a picnic or barbecue. The Victoria Day long weekend marks the first camping trip of the season for eager campers and June brings the excitement of graduation celebrations.
This month’s cover story features Brian Grant Duff, the owner of All Nations Stamp and Coin, a historic stamp and coin shop with a rich legacy in Canada. Brian shares insights into his journey and sheds light on the enduring popularity of collecting.
We are delighted to welcome JAK’s Beer Wine Spirits back to Dunbar. Their doors reopened in early December. Explore The Chill Room, an expansive refrigerated shopping experience boasting an impressive selection of beer, coolers, and cold wines.
Prado Café is gearing up for its grand opening, while BMO Bank of Montreal has relocated across the street to the new building at 4480 Dunbar Street. Additionally, Active Pilates has opened its doors at 3584 W. 41st Avenue.
We would like to provide you with an update regarding the plans for Dunbar’s neighbourhood plaza. There is significant enthusiasm from Dunbar businesses and residents for a neighbourhood plaza in the community. However, both the Dunbar Village Business Association (DVBA) and the City of Vancouver have agreed to postpone the installation of Dunbar’s plaza on West 27th Avenue (on the east side of Dunbar). Over the next three years, the City will be conducting extensive sewer and water infrastructure upgrades in the Dunbar area. In 2024, the majority of this construction is planned for West 26th, 27th, and 28th Avenues. The DVBA aims to ensure that vehicles and bikes will be able to safely reroute on adjacent streets while this construction is underway. Although we are disappointed that Dunbar’s plaza cannot proceed at this time, we eagerly anticipate discussing with more of you the opportunities for businesses and residents that Dunbar’s plaza will bring once Dunbar’s local street network is restored and available for regular use.
Take time to enjoy the outdoors and all that this fabulous community offers. We are grateful for your ongoing support of local businesses.
Welcome to Dunbar Village

ALL NATIONS STAMP AND COIN: Business Celebrates 75th Anniversary
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra SteierStamp and coin collecting has been Brian Grant Duff’s lifelong passion. As a young boy, he was hospitalized for a lengthy period, and his grandmother would visit him regularly with gifts. When the novelty of comic books wore off, she began to bring him stamps and coins, which were instant hits. Little did Brian realize the introduction of this hobby would lead to celebrating 40 years as a stamp and coin dealer.
At age 14, Brian ran his first stamp approval business. This involved sending selections of stamps to other collectors on approval – they would purchase the ones they wanted and return the rest.
After graduating from high school, Brian began an arts degree but abandoned his studies to run and eventually own stamp and coin concessions at Eaton’s and The Bay.
Eaton’s also sent him to Toronto to run the stores and auctions in that city.
All Nations Stamp and Coin opened in 1949, making it one of Canada’s longest-operating stamp and coin shops.
In 1998, an opportunity arose to purchase All Nations Stamp and Coin in downtown Vancouver. For ten years, he juggled his work at The Bay with the ownership of All Nations. In 2008, Brian moved the shop to Dunbar, where he resides with his family. He is proud to have retained clients since his days at Eaton’s 37 years ago.
Brian’s vast experience includes buying, selling, and auctioning Canadian and worldwide stamps, collections, and postal history.
The pandemic was initially a challenging time for his Dunbar business. He boarded up the windows to keep the store safe; some thought it had closed. On a positive note, Brian says, “The pandemic renewed an interest in hobbies. People got tired of looking at YouTube videos all day.”
“The store’s demographic is largely baby boomers. Young buyers mainly purchase online; it’s harder to get young people started collecting.”
“The magic of collectibles is you are holding history in your hand.”
During the early days of the pandemic, when stores were closed, people began to shop online more, which spawned considerable growth in All Nations’ weekly auctions. On March 16, 2024, the business held its 1450th weekly auction. Every Saturday at noon, there are 215 lots, and 30 to 50 vendors are represented.
Auction collectibles include stamps, rare stamps, covers, cancels, freaks, error stamps, postal history, postcards, RPPC, photographs, historical documents, autographs, artist-signed stamp design booklets, concert
programs, memorabilia, ancient coins, ancient Greek and Roman coins, modern Canadian coins, world coins, numismatic tokens, bank notes, paper money, medals, medallions, hockey cards, trading cards, British Columbia history, and Canadian historical items.
Brian has dealt with some of Canada’s most valuable coins and stamps. He invites you to talk to him if you have any rare collectibles.
Are you thinking about selling your collection or perhaps just a few pieces? This can be the right move if you realize you’ve gone as far as planned with your collection. Sharing your material with other collectors who have been searching at length for material you possess can be very gratifying.
In early 2022, Brian lobbied Canada Post to create a fundraising stamp to support Ukraine. “I harassed everyone I thought would support my petition,” says Brian. He successfully collected 1,600 signatures. Arran Stephens, co-founder of Nature’s Path Organic Foods, joined the lobbying campaign. Brian was grateful for his support and enjoyed the collaboration.
“Canada Post quickly got the stamp out the door and into the customer’s hands. Normally, it takes two years to take a stamp from proposal to production, but they managed to do it in four months.” The first-day cover sold out instantly, but the stamps are still for sale.
Canada is the only country outside Europe to have created a humanitarian stamp to support Ukraine. In 2023, Brian received an award from the Ukraine Stamp and Coin Society for his efforts.
Brian has an active petition on Change.org encouraging the United States Postal Service to issue a special edition Taylor Swift stamp in honour of her significant musical and philanthropic contributions. He suggests that a portion of the proceeds from each stamp sold could go towards charities that
Taylor supports, thus combining recognition with action. It may also expose a younger demographic to stamp collecting.
The Royal Canadian Mint released a small batch of King Charles III coins on his 75th birthday in November 2023. Brian indicates the coins disappeared quickly; however, the stamps with the King’s image did not have the same appeal.
Collections mean different things to different people. For some, collecting may be a trip down memory lane or the thrill of finding a treasure. For others, they may open doors to connect with other collectors or reap financial rewards.
“People tell me it’s great to have a collection; it brings them joy and takes their mind off things happening in the world. I always welcome people to join in our merry band of collecting,” says Brian.

JAK’S BEER WINE SPIRITS: CREATING GREAT CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Carolynne PallaIn early December 2023, amidst falling snowflakes, JAK’s staff gathered to pop open a celebratory bottle of bubbly and cut a ribbon to mark the grand opening of its new Dunbar store. Four years ago, the former block was demolished; it has been replaced with a development that includes street-level retail with residences above.
Romina Marzano, general manager of JAK’s Dunbar store, is thrilled to be back. She remarks, “The Dunbar community is very welcoming, and we have received plenty of positive feedback. The whole team is delighted with how friendly our guests are and how easy it is to connect personally.”
Romina adds, “The store’s open floor plan makes it easy to navigate, and the large windows allow in plenty of light. It is an inviting space and is great for browsing and exploring.”
“The chill room houses a great selection of beer and coolers. Customers tell us we have created the best open refrigerator shopping experience in Vancouver, which also allows us to offer an impressive selection of cold wines,” says Romina.
JAK is an acronym for founder and chairman John Andrew Kettlewell.
Dunbar residents may remember the business was previously called Pacific Spirits; in 2015, it rebranded as JAK’s.
At JAK’s, it’s all about family, and it has been for four generations. In 1981, John Kettlewell purchased his first pub in Coquitlam. Subsequently, he became involved with many other pubs throughout the Lower Mainland. Along the way, other family members joined
him, including his sons Matt and Damian Kettlewell and their brothers-in-law, Geoff Dear and Mike McKee. JAK’s nine liquor stores are located throughout Metro Vancouver.
JAK’s aims to create a liquor store experience that stands out with a unique selection of products — such as the sort of small-batch wine, beer, and spirits you won’t find at government stores — paired with outstanding customer service, including special classes and tastings led by whisky specialists, visiting winemakers, and their own highly-trained in-store service champions.
“The buying department makes sure we have a wide array of products available, allowing us to offer fantastic products in all price categories so every customer can find something in our store,” says Romina.
Approximately seventy per cent of JAK’s products are not found in government liquor stores.
The larger floor plan has allowed JAK’s to
extend its premium wine selection, which now includes an extensive assortment of natural and organic wines and B.C. wines.
JAK’s staff highly recommend Joie Farm Pinot Grigio (BC) and Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Premier Cru (France). Two of their favourite red wines are Heitz Cellar Grignolino (USA) and Catena Cabernet Franc (Argentina). Customer top picks include Tantalus Riesling (BC) and Altos Malbec (Argentina).
“Our selection of seasonal, limited craft beers is constantly changing with the beer scene in Vancouver, and we consistently offer the most unique and outstanding products at the best value possible,” says Romina.
Some popular beers include Brassneck West Coast Pale Ale, Driftwood Fat Tug, Fieldhouse Dark Sour Superflux Brewing IPA and Yellow Dog Hazy IPA.
Select wines are featured monthly, and the store offers guest tastings on Fridays and Saturdays.
JAK’s Chief Financial and Real Estate Officer, Mike McKee, says, “It can be intimidating to walk into a store with all this product, so we don’t have clerks. We have people who ask our guests what they’re having for dinner. We spend a lot of time creating that great customer experience.”
The Dunbar team is welleducated in product selection thanks to various professional development programs such as WSET and Prud’homme. As a result, the staff are qualified to make excellent recommendations for any occasion, whether it is a food pairing, a gift, a cocktail recipe, or something new to try.
“Assistant manager Jeremy Paul travelled here from England, where he gained much experience and knowledge in the wine industry, completing multiple Qualifications such as WSET 3 in wine. Our other service champions include Joseph and Alex, Dunbar’s beer geeks, Zeynep, who loves to make and drink wine, and Leilani, who provides the best food pairings and jokes!”
Romina concludes, “The greatest reward of my job is being part of the Dunbar community and fostering a welcoming and positive environment for our guests. We take pride in offering our passion for wine and spirits. Engaging and developing relationships with our guests can’t be matched! We invite you to come by and meet us all.”
