Publisher's Note Here we are in 2020! It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the Olympic torch passed through Steveston village. There was plenty of rain during December and some people were wishing for a white Christmas. Three weeks later their dream came true; schools got a surprise snow day and skaters had the thrill of heading to Garry Point Park’s outdoor ice rink! So many successful community events took place prior to the holidays including Girls’ Night Out, Santa’s arrival by boat, the Christmas Classic Car Cruise, the Cannery’s Festival of Trees and more. Tara Orr captured some photos of these special moments on pages 30-33. February, the month of love, is all about Valentine’s Day and Family Day long weekend. Our local heritage sites are offering some fun family programming. Ready for spring? March 19 marks the beginning of the season of renewal. Longer days will soon be here with Daylight Saving Time starting on March 8. Kids and teachers look forward to spring break from March 16 to 27. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at our favorite Irish pub, O’Hare’s GastroPub. Our cover features Barry Cavanaugh, owner of Penta Builders Group. Barry Cavanaugh loves Steveston. The owner and president of Steveston based Penta Builders Group says, “I have travelled many places and I always look forward to coming home. I love Richmond.” Following high school, Barry worked as a firefighter. After marrying his wife Laurie and having two children, he realized they needed to supplement their household income with a second job so he started a fencing and landscaping company. It was at this time he fell in love with construction. Thirty years ago Barry took the next step and formed Penta Builders Group. By nature he is a highly organized person and decided to venture into the world of home building.

Barry credits field manager Scott Cole and project manager Patrick Mullin as being masters of their craft. His daughters Ashley Gaetz (design consultant) and Chelsea Cavanaugh (accounting) work alongside him at the Steveston based office, which is located in the beautiful building his company built on Bayview Street near Third Avenue. Craftsman style homes are well suited for historical Steveston village. The most popular builds tend to be in the 2,000 to 3,000 square foot range. When it comes to design preference, both Craftsman and contemporary homes top the list. Sought after features include open floor plans, radiant in floor heat, high ceilings, air

Barry feels confident housing prices will stabilize. He remarks, “Vancouver is a world class city with world class prices. People want to live here.”

Community involvement takes high priority for this local company. “We strive to make community contributions in ways that are significant, meaningful and long lasting,” Barry comments. He believes, “People who have more to give should give more.” He is exceptionally proud to have married into the philanthropic Ilich family. Laurie’s parents are Maureen Ilich and the late Milan Ilich who amongst many significant accomplishments was an Order of British Columbia recipient. Barry says, “We do what we can within our means to give back.” This includes contributing to Richmond Hospital Foundation’s Starlight Gala, Richmond Christmas Fund and sponsoring Richmond Girls’ Soccer.

The future for Penta is to continue to build quality homes as we’ve done in the past.” Barry concludes with a smile, "I enjoy what I do. It’s my passion to start from a sand lot and end up with a jewel of a finished home. It’s an exhilarating feeling.”

The Fab Pad:
Thinking Outside the Big Box Story by Sarah Gordon

It seems fitting that The Fab Pad is housed in one of Steveston’s most historic buildings. Owned by lifelong Steveston resident Laura Stapleton, this eclectic store showcases treasures dating from the 1800s onwards with a leaning to the mid-twentieth century. Laura and her husband discovered their passion for mid-century (1940 to 1970) furniture when they were looking to replace their massproduced furniture with pieces that displayed substance, character and individuality. Soon after, Laura was looking to make a career change. She explains, “I thought it would be a natural next step to follow my passion for vintage and antiques, and open a shop in the village.”
The new central location has drawn more locals to The Fab Pad. 14
The Fab Pad originally opened in 2013 and moved twice before settling into the Moncton Street storefront in November 2018. This unique shop attracts clients ranging from younger couples looking to invest in quality pieces to empty nesters who are reconnecting to the pieces they remember from their younger days. Laura mentions, “The local film industry purchases a lot of product from us, and we’re grateful. Thanks in part to the booming film industry, we’ve been able to expand and grow our business.”
Laura is doing her part to make the world more sustainable. She says, “We’ve found people are attracted to vintage pieces because they are not “cookiecutter” like those that are produced by the

She says, “It was a chandelier made out of amber-toned Lucite grapes. While there were lots of Lucite grape chandeliers in the mid-century (yes, really!) there were few of this size - this thing was colossal. It was more than two feet long and must have weighed 40 pounds. It looked absolutely spectacular lit up in the window, and it sold in less than a day.” thousands today. In addition to the attraction of having pieces that are unique and different, people also like the sustainability behind vintage furniture; no new furniture is being produced, precious resources aren’t being used, therefore vintage is better for the planet.” Mid-century teak and walnut sideboards and dressers are the store’s most requested items. Laura recalls one of the more memorable items was also one of The Fab Pad’s most unusual.
The Fab Pad’s pieces are sourced in a variety of ways including estate sales and auctions, but most importantly through Laura’s network of “pickers” who find items around the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
The Fab Pad also carries a huge selection of lamps, barware, collectibles, art, and even a little taxidermy.

Julie Schneider “We get new items in the shop every week, and sometimes daily. Our inventory is constantly changing,” says Laura. She adds, “I do most of the refinishing and restoration, although we do occasionally send out more complicated pieces to a local refinisher. As we’ve gotten busier, I find I have less time to refinish, and it takes a lot of time to do a quality job.”

One of the greatest rewards is finding special pieces, and presenting them to her customers in new and interesting ways, whether that means refinishing and bringing them back to life, or displaying them in the stylish environment. She delights in finding rare and one of a kind pieces, although they are few and far between. Laura remarks, “It’s the thrill of the chase that makes this business fun!”

She loves hearing how nicely the shop is curated.
Her wish for the village is to see it continue to develop with the addition of more restaurants and boutique stores.
Laura says, “Since I personally choose every item, it’s rewarding to hear people say they appreciate the amount of time I put into selecting just the right pieces.”
“I hope we continue to see many more unique businesses come to Steveston,” says Laura. Fortunately, by locating her independent business here, Laura has played a part in making her dream a reality.
As a Steveston business owner and resident, Laura has a vested interest in seeing her community thrive. She is an active board member with the Steveston Merchants Association, and is also as an advocate for merchant relations with the film industry.

Steveston Festival of Trees The Steveston Festival of trees took place during the month of December 2019 inside the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. Local businesses and non-profit organizations participated by decorating trees to showcase their community spirit and creativity. It was an incredibly close competition this year. After more than 1500 votes, only five votes separated the top three trees! Nurse Next Door placed third with 166 votes for their “Caring Tree.� In second place, the River's Edge Girl Guides secured 168 votes. And the winner for most popular vote was Steveston Community Society, who edged out the competition for a first-place finish with 170 votes! Congratulations to the winners, and a huge thank you to everyone who participated. February - March 2020
