Publisher’s Note Hello, spring! It is such a pleasure to see cherry trees blooming, to hear birds chirping and to feel the warmth of the sun again. Kerrisdale Arena’s Play Palace is now open for indoor playground fun. Meanwhile, baseball players are eagerly awaiting Little League season which commences with the opening day parade on April 28. The Kerrisdale Business Association is busy planning Kerrisdale Carnival Days with fun for all including horse and carriage rides, entertainers, face painting and music. Merchants will showcase their business with special incentives and super sidewalk sales on April 27 and 28. Kerrisdale has many shopping and dining options to celebrate Mother’s Day on May 13. Take mom out or buy her a special gift. June is a busy month for families as the school year ends along with some sporting activities. In addition, dance and music recitals abound! It’s time to start planning for summer. Mark your calendar – Maple Grove Outdoor Pool opens June 16. It’s no secret Kerrisdale loves tea. Our cover story features the well-loved Secret Garden Tea Company. We first profiled sister-in-laws Erin and Kathy Wyder when their business was in its original location on West

Boulevard. Now comfortably at home in their new space around the corner on West 40th Avenue, we couldn’t resist a follow up story to hear about their ongoing success. In this issue we feature Jack McCullough and Susan McCullough, owners of Form & Function. They sell beautifully constructed furniture made in Vancouver. These quality pieces are “furniture for keeps.” Read about Bard on the Beach, the secondlargest professional Shakespeare festival in Canada. This homegrown theatre festival is a beloved fixture in Vancouver’s summer landscape. Bard on the Beach opens on June 6 with an original and entertaining lineup including As You Like It and Macbeth. Spring in Kerrisdale is a time for gardening, spring cleaning, garage sales, outdoor dining and barbecues. Secret Garden Tea Company Where Teatime Memories Are Made Story by Sarah Gordon

Mention Secret Garden Tea Company and an instant calm washes over people. They remark how much they love the tearoom and quickly follow with “We should go for tea together!” In October 1995 the original Secret Garden Tea Company opened on West Boulevard. It was cozy and quaint and introduced many Vancouverites to the pleasure of high tea. Sister-in-laws Erin and Kathy Wyder are the owners; both were practically weaned on tea by their grandmothers.

“Tea is really comforting.” Erin Wyder Kathy recalls childhood memories of her Gammy Bentall’s tea parties, complete with ladies dressed up in hats, nibbling on petit fours and drinking from pretty teacups. She remembers plenty of laughter and conversation. Similarly, as a little girl, Erin and her Nan McBeath had a tradition of having tea together everyday at three o’clock. Tea,

baked goods and their shared time together left a lasting impression on her. In 2016 after 21 years at the West Boulevard location, an opportunity knocked. With redevelopment of their former space looming, the partners found a brand new space around the corner on West 40th Avenue. Working from a complete shell was an exciting prospect. Kathy comments, “We were able to take all of the things that worked and that we loved, and update what we wanted to improve on.”

The moment you walk in the door you feel at home. The signature Secret Garden colour scheme remains (yellow, green, with accents of white and blue) which evokes memories of the former location, yet this is a fresh space and has a wow factor all its own. The square footage has increased dramatically; it is two thirds larger and seats 86 guests (as opposed to 40 previously).

You can also order tea online, or pick up High Tea to Go (in addition to the traditional high tea you can choose childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, gluten free or vegetarian high teas.) Breakfast and lunch menus are also offered at Secret Garden. Erin mentions there are regular patrons who have been coming for 23 years. Some like to eat breakfast and read the Saturday newspaper. Others have special spots where they like to sit. The staff is familiar with how regular customers like their tea and what they usually order for breakfast.

Erin and Kathy are not strangers to royalty. In 2009 they served high tea to the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles when she visited VanDusen Botanical Garden. The Duchess liked the treats so much she asked for a “snack pack” to take on the plane! The week prior to the upcoming royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Secret Garden will be selling hand-decorated cookies (details will be announced on social media). On the May 19 wedding day, free samples of Buckingham Palace teabags will be given to every visitor who stops by Secret Garden. Coupled with Mother’s Day (May 13) it is going to be a very busy month at Vancouver’s well-loved teahouse. Reservations are essential, or host your own tea party at home with High Tea to Go. Form & Function Furniture For Keeps Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier We’ve all heard the expression, “You get what you pay for” when you purchase an inexpensive item that does not stand the test of time. Ultimately, this ends up costing more in the long run when the good needs to be replaced. The environment also pays the price when poorly constructed items such as shoes, clothing, appliances and furniture are tossed away. Jack McCullough and Susan McCullough are business partners and have been selling beautiful custom-built furniture at their shop, Form & Function, for 35 years. The shop was originally located in Point Grey from 1983 until 2007 when it was destroyed by a fire. Serendipitously, the next day the West 41st Avenue storefront came available and Form & Function found a new home in Kerrisdale. 14

Form & Function offers a range of furniture that is not only beautifully constructed, but is also healthy, earth-friendly and becomes an integral part of clients’ lives. Susan offers her professional interior design services to Form & Function’s clients. Jack has spent the majority of his career in retail; he got his start in his hometown of Winnipeg and never looked back. Form & Function's Olympic Village-based workshop employs four highly skilled

handcrafts each piece, from selection of lumber to final sanding. The pieces are also designed and finished in the workshop. “Our skillset is really high,” says Jack. Cold climate solid hardwood (cherry, walnut and white oak) milled in New England is used to create tables, beds, chairs, cabinets and sideboards. Jack mentions that fibreboard and MDF products cannot be found at their shop; Form & Function’s furniture is without façade. Every piece of Verus furniture is bespoke. If you are looking for a sideboard designed for a specific height your wish will be granted, or if you require a table that is petite by day but expands to seat a crowd, Form & Function is happy to oblige.

Complementing the other quality furniture lines are beautiful leather couches made by the French company Duvivier. Jack says, “They are to leather as we are to wood.” As well, the shop will soon be adding some contemporary pieces by Belgium based Ethnicraft. Although it is not custom-made, customers can count on quality hardwood furniture made from walnut, teak and white oak. Form & Function does not attempt to be everything to everybody. The store’s client base is largely referral based. Many customers are downsizing, and if you need help in this arena Susan is a pro at assessing what will fit and suit your new home. Seeing pieces of furniture being woven into people’s lives is extremely rewarding for Susan and Jack. It is not uncommon for longtime clients to report, “Horses couldn’t drag this from me.” Now that is music to a business owner’s ears.

Bard Offers Another Season of Great Entertainment Love and Music, Mayhem and Murder – and More… Story by Heather Kennedy Back in the summer of 1990, a small band of Shakespeare-loving actors and their friends raised a tent in Vanier Park and staged an enthusiastic production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, funded by a small government grant, a few supporters’ donations, and the proceeds from a couple of garage sales. Little did they imagine that almost three decades later, their modest experiment would become the secondlargest professional Shakespeare festival in Canada, with an annual operating budget of $7 million and attendance topping 100,000 each season. The homegrown theatre festival has become a beloved fixture in Vancouver’s summer landscape – both literally and figuratively. And this summer, its original and entertaining lineup is likely to propel it to its greatest-ever success. Here’s why.

The Play’s The Thing (Hamlet) For many play-goers, plenty of romance, laughter and music is what makes a dream night at the theatre. Others thrill to a story that sends shivers up and down the spine – something truly dark and scary. The best of both those worlds is on offer in Bard’s two 24

2018 BMO Mainstage productions. The Festival leads off with Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, Macbeth – the ultimate study of how power can seduce, but also completely destroy. The central characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, are truly chilling as they activate their murderous plot to seize the throne of Scotland, and the play is a legendary vehicle for great performances and outstanding direction. Bard’s production is helmed by Chris Abraham, Artistic Director of Crow’s Theatre in Toronto and a respected director at Ontario’s Stratford Festival, the largest Shakespeare Festival in North America. One of Canada’s finest Shakespearean actors, Ben Carlson, another Stratford veteran, plays Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth is played by Moya O’Connell. O’Connell is originally from B. C. but for the past decade, she’s been a leading player at the Shaw Festival, Canada’s other flagship theatre event. Last December the Globe & Mail’s 2018 Arts preview made special note of this trio of top actors and director, citing Bard’s production of Macbeth as one of two Shakespearean ‘must-sees” in all of Canada this year.

Sharing the stage with Macbeth is As You Like It, Shakespeare’s delicious romantic comedy. This season the action has been transplanted to Kitsilano in the late ‘60s, where it’s the Summer of Love. The play’s iconic Forest of Arden becomes the Okanagan, where lovers and rebels are retreating to get ‘back to the land’. And – best of all for music lovers – the production features over twenty classic Beatles songs, from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” to “Here Comes the Sun”, sung and played live by the cast. The result is a joyful romantic romp, anchored by the bestloved pop music ever written – a production that will delight children to grandparents and pretty much everyone in between. There’s humour and provocative social comment on the more intimate Howard Family Stage in the Douglas Campbell Theatre. Timon of Athens opens first, and time-shifts from its original Greek setting to Vancouver and the present moment; the title character becomes a female philanthropist and pillar of society, played by Colleen Wheeler. The play is directed by Meg Roe, who helmed Bard’s hugely popular Tempest

in 2014 and directed the hit play Middletown at the Shaw Festival last season.

Timon plays in repertory with a new adaptation of the classical Greek play Lysistrata. Bard’s version keeps the original 411 BC play but embeds it in a timely modern storyline that is set at the Festival site in Vanier Park. The plot imagines there’s a threatening development project and the woman of the acting Company decide they need to stop it; expect a spicy mix of sharplyobserved commentary and plenty of bawdy humour. The world premiere is directed by Lois Anderson (Pericles, Bard 2016).

rising stars of the UBC Opera Ensemble together with a subset of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra’s musicians. Together they present a costumed staging of a programme of favourite selections from La Traviata, La Bohème, Die Fledermaus and more, performed against the BMO Mainstage’s spectacular open backdrop of mountains, sea and sky. Bard Artistic Director Christopher Gaze hosts the four-performance series presented on August 27 and September 3 (matinees and evenings both dates).

Beyond the Plays The Festival also presents a signature midsummer special event, called Bard-B-Q & Fireworks. On the three Celebration of Light fireworks nights, July 28, August 1 and 4, the play performance is followed by a hot salmon buffet dinner with all the trimmings, then on-site entertainment highlighted by the world-renowned Dowco Street Pipe Band and a chance to take a unique selfie with a few classic Bard props in the Pixstar Photo booth. The evening wraps up with dessert, coffee and a superb private view of the fireworks display in English Bay; all-in ticket prices start at just $99.
