Spring has definitely sprung. Ornamental cherry trees are in full bloom and sweet floral fragrances permeate the air. Neighbours that we haven’t seen all winter are coming out of their houses to weed their gardens, mow their lawns and go for a bike ride. Sunshine is most inspiring! On this month’s cover we feature the Jagger brothers who many of you know and watched grow up in Kerrisdale. They share their stories of how they achieved success with the support of the community. I met Stephen Jagger years ago and have been inspired by him ever since. Imagine my excitement when he told me there were three more brothers, who are all equally inspiring. Inside this issue, read the stories of some long-time business owners who help make Kerrisdale such an endearing neighbourhood. Dino Arvanitis, owner of Economy Barber Shop, says he adores this community which he calls paradise. Andrea Davis, owner of
I’m looking forward to Kerrisdale Carnival Days on April 27 & 28. It will be a fun-filled time with entertainment, a Little League parade, horse and carriage rides, sidewalk sales and…pooch poetry, all brought to you by the Kerrisdale Business Association. Check www.kerrisdaleinsider.com where I will post event photos. What’s happening in May and June? There are spring sports, fairs, garage sales, the BMO Vancouver Marathon races through the neighbourhood, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, the end of the school year, the opening of Maple Grove Outdoor Pool and by June 20 the first day of summer will arrive, along with a new issue of Kerrisdale Insider. Cover Story: Jagger Brothers by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
They are creative, handsome, dynamic, witty, talented, and entrepreneurs extraordinaire. Kerrisdale Insider publisher Carolynne Palla and I met with three of the four Jagger brothers, Mike, Stephen and Kevin (Dave was unavailable) to discuss their lives and their businesses. We concluded that their parents, Bruce & Kathie Jagger, did something very right when raising their four sons. Bruce and Kathie Jagger, both Vancouverites, moved a number of times due to work transfers, and along the way their sons were born. Their oldest son Mike (36) was born in Montreal, Stephen (34) was born in Hong Kong, while Dave (31) and Kevin (27) were born in Calgary. Mike led the move back to Vancouver in 1990, and the rest of the family followed in 1991. Having industrious and hard working parents as role models laid a solid foundation for their sons. Their father began his career with the Royal Bank at age 19 as a bank teller, and forged a very successful career in commercial banking. Now retired, he actively assists with fundraising for the Rick Hansen Foundation and also for Vancouver College, where the Jagger brothers attended school.

hair & makeup by Jessica Whitby Their mother started Kids Help Phone in Alberta and British Columbia. She recently retired from her position as Regional Manager after more than twenty years with the charity and was their longest standing employee. Kevin Jagger admires his mother’s work ethic and says that she instilled in her sons plenty of confidence. When I asked Kevin Jagger how she managed to cope with four boys, he said their parents encouraged them to keep busy by playing sports and getting jobs when they were young. The Jagger boys took to the challenge and made money in industrious and creative ways including delivering flyers, shoveling snow in Calgary and taking paper routes. The brothers laughed when they said they were the only kids in the neighbourhood with bank bonds. Persistence and determination seem to be a driving force and common element between the Jaggers. Mike Jagger’s entrepreneurial spirit was an inspiration to his brothers. When he was ten years old, Mike Jagger called The Calgary Sun every day until they eventually gave him a small route. He also sold subscriptions for

the paper. When they moved to Vancouver, with the assistance of his brothers who went knocking on doors to drum up sales, Mike Jagger painted home addresses on curbs with stencils. In high school Stephen Jagger had a landscape ‘company’ and employed his friends. In elementary school Kevin Jagger was a Dominoes pizza sign holder and worked as a landscaper. All of these enterprises were character forming stepping stones which molded them into the successful entrepreneurs that they are today.
Mike Jagger is the President of Provident Security which incorporated in 1996 as a special event security service. The company originally operated out of Mike Jagger’s bedroom at his parent’s house, and was designed to help cover his university tuition. He started the company with a $500 limit on a credit card. In 16 years the business has grown to a team of 200 employees, 6,000 clients and a fleet of 39 vehicles. Provident Security has become one of Vancouver’s largest, privately held, full service security teams. How did Mike Jagger become interested in security? His cousin worked in concert security and got him a job. York House School heard about Mike Jagger and hired him to provide security for school dances, which led to other school dance security work, and then branched out to private events downtown. The next evolution of the business was door to door marketing, where he started signing up businesses needing security patrols. Provident Security began to offer overnight bike patrols and would catch everything from breaking and entering to vandalism.

As company president, Mike Jagger’s leadership role involves working with teams, managing major projects and working directly with some clients. Provident Security offers a wide range of services for residential, commercial and industrial clients, including uniformed security guards, alarm and electronic security system design, installation and monitoring. The company is also associated with the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s alarm installation program. The company prides itself on its innovative and unique alarm response 24 hours a day; Provident Security guarantees a response of five minutes or less to client burglar alarms. They are the only firm in North America to offer this guarantee. Provident Security is a proud community supporter. In addition to sponsoring several Vancouver little league, soccer and high school teams, they are a major sponsor of the UBC Old Boys Rugby Club as well as the Kerrisdale Play Palace. In addition, the company actively participates in the United Way campaign, the B.C. Children’s Hospital Miracle Network fundraiser and Kids Help Phone. Mike Jagger, his wife and their three children (ages 5, 8 and 9) live in Kerrisdale. He is a board member with the Kerrisdale Business Association. The same bedroom where Provident Security was born also launched Stephen Jagger’s career in web hosting. The early days of the web, circa 1999, were not extremely user friendly and Stephen Jagger determined that there was a need for change. He required a website for his first real business, i-Level Media, and approached his friend, Michael Stephenson, who is now his business partner, to assist him. Eventually they started a web hosting company which they subsequently sold to a competitor. Stephen Jagger is currently involved in four web oriented businesses. Ubertor.com is a

real estate software company that provides websites and online marketing tools to thousands of real estate agents across North America. Reachd.com is a comprehensive course in Internet Marketing designed to help grow your business with instruction in online marketing. Topics include: Search engine optimization, blogging, social media, and Google Adwords. Clients have included small and medium business owners and marketing managers. OutsourcingThingsDone.com provides high level outsourced personnel to business owners and managers across North America which Stephen Jagger describes as off shoring or outsourcing workers. It provides virtual assistants, bookkeepers, legal assistants, computer programmers, web designers, customer service personnel, sales professionals and more. The latest venture is PayrollHero.com, an online payroll system which allows employees to access their schedule, pay and other workrelated data via the Internet, with information updated in real time. In 2010 Stephen Jagger co-wrote the book Sociable with Shane Gibson, which addresses how social media is turning sales and marketing upside down. He is highly in demand as a public speaker. In addition, he is on the Vancouver College Alumni Association Board and has volunteered for the Forum of Women Entrepreneurs. Stephen Jagger lives in Dunbar with his wife and their 21-month-old son. They are expecting their second child in May. As the youngest family member, Kevin Jagger has been inspired by his enterprising brothers but has also carved a very unique path for himself. Football had always been Kevin Jagger’s sport, both at Vancouver College and McGill University. After university, Kevin Jagger worked as investment banker, inspired by Dave Jagger’s success in the same career. Once he got into the high pressure world of investment

banking Kevin Jagger found himself burning the candle at both ends. At age 25 he had a “career life crisis” and found unexpected inspiration during the 2010 Winter Olympics. He was out of shape, ate breakfast daily at McDonalds, when he had an epiphany, and not a small one at that. He decided to get back into sports with the goal to represent Canada on a national team at the 2014 Olympic Games. He methodically determined which winter sport would be a good match for his age range, his physical build and his budget. Kevin Jagger had always been a good skater when he played hockey as a child in Calgary so he zeroed in on speed skating, a sport he had never tried. The Jagger family fully supported his somewhat unconventional decision and offered him free accommodation, in Stephen Jagger’s basement suite, and sponsorship from Provident Security. This enabled him to hire Brock Miron, who skated for Canada at the 2006 Games, as his full-time Vancouver coach. With financial concerns set aside Kevin Jagger was able to pursue his goal to become the “long track long shot”. Kevin Jagger’s dedication to speed skating is truly inspiring. With the assistance of Miron,

build websites. For this unusual athlete, sponsorship came first, then the athletic commitment.” Along with Provident Security as Kevin Jagger’s primary sponsor he has also received support from two Kerrisdale businesses; Marty Pospischil’s Real Estate team and The Mac Shack. Nike Canada is his training apparel sponsor. Kevin Jagger has made a four year commitment to chase his dream. In July he is going to make a lifetime commitment when he gets married in Whistler. It is evident that we going to see much more of the Jagger brothers. They are clearly masters of reinvention who shoot for the stars and achieve their dreams by setting sights on their next goals. They are in perpetual motion, which is really a lesson for us all; no idea is worth throwing out until it is fully explored. Speedskating photo by Stephen Maunder
he worked out twice a day, six times a week, and was accepted to train with the Calgary Olympic Oval Program. In order to make his dream a reality, he relocated to Calgary where he spends eight months of the year training at the speed skating oval. Abby Ennis is his Calgary coach.

Kevin Jagger now ranks 69th in the country, which is a true feather in his cap. To be invited to the Olympic trials in January 2014 he needs to be in the top 20, and to advance to the Olympics he has to place in the top 3 or 4. He says it is a long road ahead; however he has come so far in such a short time that the Olympic long track may not be such a long shot after all. Understandably, the media has taken great interest in Kevin Jagger’s story. The Toronto Sun interviewed him in November 2010 and noted that “What Jagger lacks in skating technique he makes up for in marketing savvy and social media expertise. The youngest of four successful, entrepreneurial brothers, Jagger's slick website, longtracklongshot.com, is one of the best among athletes. Sponsored by several of his brothers' companies, Jagger is taking his real-world business acumen and helping fellow skaters seek sponsors and

ECONOMY BARBER SHOP by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Dino Arvanitis and I met on his 33rd anniversary with Economy Barber Shop to discuss his landmark Kerrisdale business. The barber shop is a true reflection of Arvanitis’ personality and what is important to him. Decorating the walls are posters of Greece, along with framed photographs and collages of treasured moments and clients. Greek music plays on a stereo, and his beautiful German Roller canary named Jimmy sings sweetly in the shop’s front window. Arvanitis is a charming gentleman. I first made contact with him a few months ago, the way many people do, when my daughter and I walked past his shop and had a quick peek in the window, whereupon we were greeted by a big friendly wave and a smile. He says it makes him feel good to connect with people. It certainly left a lasting impression on me, as I thought of days gone by when simple human connections such as this one were more common. Arvanitis is originally from Hora, Greece. His first vivid memory of working in a barber shop is connected with recalling where he was when

he heard that President Kennedy had been assassinated. A few years later, he served two years of compulsory service with the Greek army and worked as a barber when he was stationed in Cyprus. He and his brother moved to Vancouver in 1967 to join their sister who had already settled here. Arvanitis knew no English upon arrival, yet he industriously learnt the language in one year, and working as a restaurant dishwasher and as a hotel bus boy. Soon after, he attended Vancouver Vocational Institute and earned his license to become a barber. He was employed straight away at a barber shop at Hastings and Granville. After that valued experience he bought Mike’s Barber Shop at Broadway and Commercial in the mid-1970s. In 1977 he sold the shop and headed back downtown to work at another barber shop for a year and a half. Arvanitis had set his sights on working at Economy Barber Shop and made three attempts to land a job at the established business. In 1979, three times lucky, he was hired by owners Con and Mary Pritti. They
• www.KerrisdaleInsider.com
became close family friends and sold Arvanitis the business in 1981. His customers come from all walks of life and include judges, doctors, politicians, members of the Canadian Olympic curling team who dropped by during the Olympics, and even Santa Claus has been known to pop in during the Kerrisdale Business Association’s Christmas event. Some loyal clients who live as far afield as Florida, New York and England, stop by for a snip when they are in town. Arvanitis’ youngest customer was 1-year-old, and his oldest client was Dr. Fernie, who lived until he was 108-years-old. Arvanitis has cut hair for some families spanning four generations. Styles have changed very little since Arvanitis began cutting hair, although he says men tend to wear their hair a bit shorter now. He takes prides on spending time with his clients. This is an old-fashioned barber shop of the best kind. If you are looking for a shave with a straight razor and hot towels, this is the place to go. There are five barber chairs and each station has an old fashioned manual cash register, there are no computers at Economy Barber Shop. You won’t find perms or hair colouring here, but what you will find is great prices and experience. Throughout the week there are three barbers working, and on Saturdays, which is the busiest day of the week, there are four barbers available. There are no appointments; it is walk in business only. The shop is closed on Sundays and holidays. Payment is by cash, but you won’t need to bring much money along as haircuts range from a mere $13 for a seniors cut to the top price of $16.50 for a brush or crew cut. If you are looking for ‘the works’, namely a shampoo, cut and blow dry, you will pay $22. Beard trims are $8 and shaves are $16.
The people are what attract Arvanitis to Kerrisdale. He feels like he is in paradise working here, and he often comes to the village on his days off. He is a very social fellow, and I can almost guarantee that if you walk by his shop and catch his eye, Arvanitis will give you a wave and a smile. It leaves a lasting impression because it is so genuine and clearly comes straight from the heart. 5665 West Boulevard 604-266-6734
Outside of the business, Arvanitis enjoys fishing, travelling and going on outings. He and his wife met on the Broadway bus and married in 1970. They have three adult daughters, one of which is soon to be married. Arvanitis and his wife live in the Arbutus area, close enough for him to walk or cycle to work in the summer months. He makes sure to take time for holidays and likes to get back to Greece every couple of years.

HAGER BOOKS by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Kerrisdale is so fortunate to have the independent bookstore Hager Books in the community. Without a question, Andrea Davis and her staff members are all book lovers. In this charming character shop which measures 900 square feet, I couldn’t help overhearing a conversation between a staff member and a customer. They were discussing a great book and the staff member expressed her wish to be at home reading. I chuckled softly and thought this is a testimony to loving what you do for a living. Davis has been a bookstore owner for 37 years. Previously, she owned Anvil Books in New Westminster from 1975 until 1985. Meanwhile her friend, Louise Hager, opened Hager Books in Kerrisdale in 1974. When Hager decided to sell her business in 1985 she approached Davis, who was thrilled to return to her Kerrisdale roots where she was born and bred. She liked the name of the business and kept it. The shop exudes the warmth of a family run business which is not surprising as Davis’ sister, her two step-daughters and her good friend, Sue Southerland (store manager), all work alongside her. It is a busy place; the day that I was there they received a number of shipments and many customers were shopping. During the 27 years that Davis has owned Hager Books she has seen Kerrisdale’s
18

shopping patterns change. In the early years businesses were not open on Sundays. With the increase in restaurants and coffee shops more people are roaming the streets and creating the village atmosphere that Kerrisdale emits so well. Hager Books has a large cross section of supportive and loyal customers. It is no secret that e-books and online shopping have posed some challenges to booksellers, however Davis focuses on continuing to do what they do well, and that is excelling at customer service. Davis, Southerland and I talked in length about how we feel loyal to the bound book; from the weight of holding it in your hands, to the smell, the artwork, the satisfaction of reaching the last page and finally finding a home for it on a bookshelf, or passing it along to a friend as a must-read. After all, in a funny way, don’t books become our friends during the time that we engage with them? Are you looking to special order books from England? If so, Hager Books is one of the few bookstores that offer this service to their clients. Their customer service is superb as all of the knowledgeable staff are avid readers; they know of what they speak. They offer opinions about their particular favourite genres of books, and regular customers know who to consult if they are looking for something specific.
Like a permanently stationed book club, you can drop into Hager Books and get a recommendation of a good read anytime you like, but be forewarned, you may feel like taking the day off work to read. Speaking of book clubs, if you are a member of one you can place an order for five or more copies of the same book, and receive a 10% discount, if you pick up the books in one transaction. For all clients, their computerized system keeps track of your spending. When you reach $200 you receive a $10 discount. Hager Books also offers school discounts. Davis thoroughly enjoys the camaraderie of her friendly and intelligent reading customers and finds Kerrisdale to be a very close knit community. Hager Books truly care about their clients and have even been known to check up on them with a telephone call if they haven’t seen them in a while. While space is at a premium, there is a wide selection to choose from including art, biographies, business, Canadian content, children, cooking, fantasy, fiction, gardening, history, mystery, psychology, and reference. The space was formerly a shoe store and the shelves were cleverly converted to display books. The size of the shop limits the public events that Hager Books can offer, however, they do host occasional book signings and have had local celebrities such as John Bishop and Dal Richards drop in to promote their books.
business which is such a great asset to Kerrisdale Village. Here is to the staying power of Hager Books! www.hagerbooks.ca 2176 W 41st Avenue 604-263-4912
Although Davis has had opportunities to expand the shop she has not done so. It brings to mind the tagline that Stuart McLean uses for his Vinyl Café program “we may not be big but we’re small”. One must tip their hat to Davis as she has found a formula for running a successful

Kerrisdale Park and the Kerrisdale ‘Cyclone Taylor’ Arena by Terri Clark
In May 1947, The Park Board agreed to lease part of the gardens to the Society for the arena. Kerrisdale residents then launched an aggressive and wide spread fundraising campaign to raise money for the project. These donations plus funds from a local improvement bylaw along with some Park Board capital, brought the project to fruition. The new skating facility, named the Kerrisdale Arena, was officially opened on November 11, 1949. The Park Board assumed full operating responsibility for the arena in the early 1970s and soon after it was renamed for one of Canada’s early hockey greats, Fred “Cyclone” Taylor, who also served as Park Commissioner from 1951-1956. During its early years when Rock & Roll was sweeping the country, it was the site of many concerts including a 1956 visit by Bill Haley and the Comets.
Kerrisdale Village has had a most interesting history since its inception in 1905. Originally the civic seat for the Point Grey Municipality prior to Vancouver’s amalgamation in 1929, it was an important hub for the train and interurban street car that ran along Wilson Road, now West 41st Avenue. Kerrisdale Park, the public greenspace south of Point Grey School, was known as Strathcona Gardens when in 1931 the Park Board decided to plow the turf for community vegetable plots. At this time the country was in the depths of depression and the gardens helped feed the unemployed. By the mid-1940s, the Point Grey Community Centre Society conceived plans for an indoor ice arena at the Strathcona Gardens site.
22
April 20 - June 21, 2012
Later this year the Vancouver Heritage Foundation will celebrate the Kerrisdale Arena’s iconic place in Vancouver’s history with a plaque sponsored by the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA). Note: As a newly hired Park Board Communications Officer in 1973 one of my responsibilities was organizing the annual Ex-Park Commissioners Dinner. It was here where I met a 90 year old Fred ‘Cyclone’ Taylor who regaled me with stories of his early life, especially in hockey. As a tribute to him and the arena that bears his name, the KBA featured the famous hockey player in all his youthful glory as part of their Olympic Poster tribute featured in storefronts during the Olympic Torch Run in 2010. Cyclone Taylor may not have won an Olympic medal, but his Vancouver Millionaires were the only home team that ever brought the Stanley Cup to our fair city.

I’ll Be Right Here by Sarah Gordon
E.T., the long-necked extra-terrestrial, struck a chord with me the first time I clapped eyes on him in 1982. During this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, a clip featuring E.T. was woven into a montage celebrating some of Hollywood’s finest cinematic moments. The four succinct words E.T. utters have always resonated with me, as he bids farewell to his young friend Elliott. E.T. points to Elliott’s forehead with his illuminated finger and says “I’ll be right here.” The delivery of these profound words, combined with the pain etched on their faces, is what we jokingly label a ‘stretcher moment’ in our house, when I am ready to be carted away, overcome with emotion. At these times my family usually avert their eyes from the television to watch my reaction. I have revisited E.T. several times during the last thirty years. Each time I view this movie it has the same impact, and time has not managed to jade the experience for me. I perch on the edge of my seat as I watch E.T.’s relationships unfold, empathize with his desire to go home, and feel the emotion of his near death experience. I’ll be right here. These words remind me of similar words my mum shared before she left our world, words that were filled with great beauty. My brother and I realized that although her physical being would no longer be here, she had embedded herself permanently inside of us, within our physical make up, and within our psyches. Last year I read a remarkable book, The Long Goodbye, by Meghan O’Rourke. O’Rourke’s journey through the loss of her mother paralleled mine in so many ways. It was a painful read, and at the same time incredibly therapeutic. After closing the book, I felt compelled to write and thank her.
24
April 20 - June 21, 2012
Over the last year I have witnessed several friends lose their mothers. I have also watched friends whose mothers have experienced health issues and thankfully have recovered. I have witnessed new life enter the world through the eyes of a friend who recently became a grandmother. It was a very happy moment to witness her joy as she told me that her grandchild would be born in a matter of days. She told me that since her daughter got married she appreciated and understood their mother/daughter relationship on a deeper level. Most certainly, with the birth of her child, the connection to her mother will elevate to a higher level yet. What I have learnt on my journey is that although the pain of loss has not gone away, it has softened, and has brought greater compassion along for the ride. No matter what stage we are at in our lives, we all need our mothers. My great-aunt, who is 93 years old, summarized it so well when she said “What I wouldn't give to have my mother walk in the door right now for a cup of tea." And I agree, it would so lovely to turn back the clock and grasp on tightly to those days again. Without my mother or mother-in-law at the matriarchal helm, I draw on my mother’s legacy and ask, “How would mum have done/ dealt with this?” My children and husband have aided me by honouring past traditions that I treasure, and we have created our own family traditions. Through this blending of the past and present we have kept the memory of my mother, and my husband’s mother, alive. And every now and then, I receive the greatest gift of all, when I see one of my mum’s facial expressions surface on my children’s faces. That is the circle of life.
