Hello, spring! Kerrisdale village is bustling with people shopping and enjoying being outdoors after a winter filled with snow and rain. The warmer weather is drawing people to restaurant patios. The neighbourhood is in its glory with a bonanza of blossoming cherry trees, cheerful seasonal flowers, and new spring banners adorning the light standards. For some families, graduation celebrations are in the works. For others, it is a time for gardening, home renovations or vacation planning.

Kerrisdale Arena removes the ice to make way for Play Palace, which opens from April 25 to September 1. Carnival Days sidewalk sales begin on Friday, April 28. Shops offer specials from quick bites and sips to slashed prices on clothing, books, linens, electronics and more. Musical performances create a joyful atmosphere, starting at noon under the clock. On Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m., the annual Kerrisdale Little League Parade marches down West 41st Avenue. Bands will perform throughout the village, and the ever-popular horse and carriage rides will clop along West 41st Avenue. Thanks to the Kerrisdale Business Association, which organizes all these free events.

On the cover, we feature Jess’ Restaurant , located in the heart of the village. Earlier this

year, Jess’ rebranded to introduce diners to dishes not commonly found outside Korea. You will be wowed by the elegant space that marries the glamour of the early twentieth century with futuristic design.

We recently spoke to Wendy Liu, the owner of Simplique Mode on West 41st Avenue. Wendy gave us the inside scoop on her busy career as a merchant, her passion for Korean jewellery and accessories, pandemic business challenges, and her mother’s special role in launching Wendy’s dream career.

JESS’ RESTAURANT: Modern Korean Cuisine

The business’s name has remained the same, but significant changes have occurred at Jess’ Restaurant on West 41st Avenue. In early 2023 plans took shape to rebrand Jess’ which opened in January 2021. Previously a fusion restaurant, it now offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Step inside Jess’, and you will be wowed by the elegant space that marries the glamour of the early twentieth century with futuristic design. The predominantly black interior pops with bursts of blue and orange upholstered

chairs paired with orange circular benches. Square black marble tables complement the Italian marble flooring. Bling is a central theme; mirrored walls reflect the light from various chandeliers, and countless Swarovski crystals are suspended from the ceiling. LED lighting with different colour choices instantly switches up the restaurant’s mood. Guests are equally impressed with the lavish washrooms; the women’s restroom features gold wall tiles, ornate mirrors, and heated toilet seats.

Jess’ first opened its doors in 2021, a difficult time for restaurants as the pandemic rolled on. General Manager Winson Ho confides, “There are always new challenges. The world has changed in such a short time with COVID, inflation, rising gas prices, supply chain issues and delivery costs.”

The restaurant closed for three weeks in January 2023 to prepare for the relaunch; small renovations took place while the chefs continued to develop the menu for Dine Out Vancouver between January 20 through February 5. This was a perfect way to gather feedback and determine which dishes would earn their place on the menu.

Winson notes that the menu is still in development, and some dishes will change based on seasonal availability.

“This cuisine is very popular in Korea and Singapore. Jess’ owner is thrilled with what is being produced. It is reminiscent of high-end restaurants in Korea.”

Jess’ signature lunch dish is Sot Bab (hot stone bowl rice). The bowl is prepared in four ways. The oyster bowl includes zucchini, daikon, carrots, garlic stems, peas and vegetable stock. The abalone and scallop bowl consists of butter, zucchini, daikon, carrots, garlic stems, peas, and vegetable stock. The beef brisket is accompanied by soy, garlic, onion, green onions, zucchini, daikon, carrots, garlic stems, peas, and egg yolk. The mushroom bowl includes truffle oil, garlic, onion, green onions, zucchini, daikon, carrots, garlic stems and peas. All bowls are served with seasonal Korean side dishes.

A little education is involved in teaching guests how to eat the hot stone rice bowl with its accompanying side dishes. It is eaten differently than a typical meal, and Jess’ friendly staff is pleased to assist.

He says, “What we cook doesn’t exist in other Vancouver restaurants. People don’t expect Korean food to be presented this way.”

Oysters are the stars of the show during Oyster Hour, which takes place daily between 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

The menu is organized by portion size. In addition to the lunch menu, the restaurant serves “mini” dishes all day that include freshly shucked oysters, Bbung Ti Gi (homemade rice poppers), Han Yip (arrowroot crystal crackers), Mari (seaweed roll), and Ggo Chi (Korean skewers).

The dinner menu spotlights both appetizers and entrees. Among the “small” (appetizers), you will find Gamja-Jeon (potato pancakes), Na Mul (beet salad), spicy tomato kimchi salad and Jo-Gae-Tang (Korean clam stew). “Large” (entrees) feature Eundaegu-Jjim (braised sablefish), Galbi-Jjim (coffee braised short ribs), Gooksoo (sesame noodles), Bibim Gooksoo (spicy noodles), hot stone bowl rice, and Jess’ signature Korean platter (served with stone bowl rice and seasonal side dishes).

Winson comments, “We politely decline all requests to modify any menu items to maintain the integrity of the chef and the kitchen’s combined vision. However, we have taken into consideration the nut-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free needs of our customers.”

The new menu has received an enthusiastic response.

The beef tartare and Hamachi appetizers have received much attention, especially with the chef’s Korean twist of adding cheese.

Winson says, “Families love Jess’; it is a gathering place. We are delighted to see regulars returning

to try out the new menu. They missed us dearly and waited for us to roll out; we are pleased to meet their expectations. We are excited to pave the way for modern Korean cuisine. It is not an everyday restaurant, and we rely on reaching diners across Metro Vancouver to come and experience Jess’ Restaurant.”

SIMPLIQUE MODE: Simple Unique Style

When Wendy Liu was looking for a name for her Kerrisdale shop, she wanted one that would capture its essence. She came up with the name simplique, which translates from French to simple-unique and added the word mode, which means style. Wendy feels this is the perfect representation of her brand and the overall West Coast vibe of her jewellery and fashion accessories boutique that opened in 2021.

Wendy has been passionate about fashion for as long as she can remember. When she was young, she aspired to be a fashion designer but found limited opportunities in Vancouver.

“I was raised in a single-parent household with no siblings, so it was always just my mom and me. She was my rock and fully supported my pursuits. I didn’t want to leave her or Vancouver, so I ended up attending UBC and focusing on business as my career path,” Wendy says.

After graduating, she entered the world of fashion retail with a small family-operated business with locations across Western Canada. Wendy was introduced to fashion merchandising and was fortunate to discover a career that united her interests. Eventually, she moved into other areas of the industry, like fashion wholesaling, distribution, and production, and delved a bit into design.

She says, “After a few years, I felt exhausted and decided to take a break and do something on my own, which led me to form this business.”

Wendy had always wanted to run her own business and played with a few concepts over the years. “I have done a bit of travelling and have always been obsessed with small jewellery and accessory shops. I noticed a number of these stores have exited the market in recent years, so there’s not a lot of options left locally.”

The business began as a seasonal retail vendor in 2017 at local markets where Wendy sold jewellery and fashion accessories.

“I created an identity and branding for people to recognize the business down the line, and this is how Simplique Mode started. I wanted to focus on unique, effortless, uncomplicated, high-quality, affordable items that can last season after season.”

During the pandemic, Wendy came up with the idea of opening a pop-up shop and began looking for opportunities. She confesses that most people thought she was crazy.

“Opening a store selling products that were likely deemed non-essential in a time when things were up in the air probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do. I thought that if I waited until things returned to normal, I might not get the chance to do this. Soon after, I committed to the store’s location. My mom thought

Kerrisdale had great potential. When I was young, she owned a bakery for a little while in the Dunbar area, so there is a little bit of nostalgia attached.”

“Because we are still a very small new business, I work as much as possible in the store, along with a small team of two to three part-time staff, who are great and supportive. Working in the store allows me to get to know our customers, which is really important.”

“I’ve always loved Asianinspired trends. When Korean trends started brewing during the past decade in North America, I knew it would be the perfect niche to get into.”

“My mom was everything to me, and I owe her so much. Unfortunately, she unexpectedly passed away last April, and this has been the most difficult time in my life. I never anticipated my mom not being here when we reached the store’s first-anniversary last summer.”

“The store’s concept has never changed, we still focus on jewellery and accessories, but I added lifestyle items to make it more of a gift destination.”

The majority of Simplique Mode’s products are produced in South Korea. The store carries a wide range of hypo-allergenic and nickel-free fashion jewellery, hats, scarves, bags, hair accessories, eyewear, footwear,

and some unique accessories from Japan. In addition, Wendy has also introduced artisanal gift and lifestyle products to complement the store’s collection.

New to the store this spring, and based on customers’ requests, Wendy will introduce fashion apparel to tie in with accessories.

“Many small local makers don’t have retail exposure, so I want to share this space with them. I’m always amazed and inspired by local artisans, so I chose a selection of unique gifts that go with our brand.”

Wendy says, “A lot of my customers are mother-daughter duos. When I see the joy our store brings to them, it reminds me of shopping with my mom when I was young. The business represents the bond and moments between us; without her encouragement and unwavering support, I’d probably never have made it this far.”
