Publisher's Note Fall has arrived and with the golden season comes trees changing to shades of yellow, orange and red, while pumpkins await their moments of glory as they transform into pies and jack-o’-lanterns! Steveston village also has so much to offer as fall commences. Merchants have been busy constructing unique scarecrows to display outside their businesses for the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl. Come view them all during the month of October; the best scarecrow wins $1,000! The Cannery is a fantastic place to go for Halloween; this year’s theme is The Haunted Sea (October 26-27). On October 31 costumed kids will arrive in the village for Halloween where merchants will greet them with treats from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. November 21 is the wildly popular Girls’ Night Out where women come out with their friends for a fun evening of shopping and dining. Christmastime in Steveston is always cozy and full of festivity with craft fairs, Santa arriving by boat on December 1, and shoppers out searching for perfect gifts. We are excited to welcome True Conditioning to their new location. I first met owner Sophie Manfredi back in July 2015 when she and her puppy Winston posed on a paddleboard for the cover of Steveston Insider! She is warm and welcoming with a magnetic personality and it is no surprise that she is so successful.

We interviewed Steven Chang of Steveston Medicine Shoppe whose small pharmacy is perfectly suited for our village. It is like stepping back to a simpler time where customers are greeted with a warm hello and are offered personal service. Who is that on the cover? It’s me! It’s no secret that I love Halloween, and to mark the 12-year anniversary issue I posed as a scarecrow at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. We welcome some new businesses to Steveston including AK & T Healthy Living, Bellatudo, Benchmark Botanicals, Code Ninjas, Luckful Nest, Scotiabank and Steveston MedSpa. We say goodbye to Daisies Boutique, Saigon by Night and Steveston Acupuncture. There is so much happening in the village with new development. Plans to replace the community centre are moving forward and it is important that everyone has a say. I look forward to the season ahead as I bundle up in warm clothes, take brisk walks, plan for the upcoming holidays, and spend time at the rink watching my son play hockey. I wish you all a happy autumn!

move. Sophie is pleased to report they did not let go of the space; in early October Ryan is opening a new business called Advantage Jujitsu Academy.
This is the third move for True Conditioning in five years. The group fitness and personal training studio opened in 2014 and was based in a small storefront on First Avenue. It didn’t take long for owners Sophie Manfredi and her husband Ryan Kitchen to realize True Conditioning was so popular that it needed to expand.
The new True Conditioning studio is 4,000 square feet with plenty of room to house the studio’s TRX suspension training and Pilates equipment. A small facelift was needed including a paint job to brighten the walls with True Conditioning’s signature yellow. Sophie laughs when she says, “Let’s hope this is the last time I have to paint a wall yellow again.”
In 2016 they shifted to London Landing where they operated happily for three years but once again growth warranted another 6
Warm and welcoming, Sophie’s magnetic personality is undoubtedly one of the many reasons True Conditioning is such a success story.

Competitive sports have always been part of Sophie’s life – when she was six years old she joined the Richmond Rapids swim club and later, as a UBC student, she joined varsity rowing. Today Sophie is a competitive Olympic weightlifter and hopes to qualify for the Canadian Nationals in 2020. Sophie’s career path led her to become a personal trainer and nutrition coach. She founded True Conditioning based on her mission to empower women through fitness and health. She believes “all women should feel comfortable and confident in their bodies, and I hope to inspire others to step outside their comfort zone, so they may uncover their true fitness potential.”
Trying a new workout can be scary but from the moment you walk into True Conditioning, you’ll feel at ease. After all, yellow is the happiest color.
person's own body weight instead of relying on machines or dumbbells to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability. Incorporating a combination of cardio, strength drills, TRX suspension training, and free weights, True Conditioning’s interval style training classes are a fun, fast and effective way to get a full body workout, improve overall fitness and help shed extra pounds.
Sophie proudly mentions True Conditioning has an all women team. Women and men can safely start classes at any age. Members include teens through to True Conditioning’s oldest member (age 75) who is able to lift 180 pounds! Physiotherapy and massage therapy are also available. Sophie says, “It is valuable to have those pieces in the communication loop. In addition, True Conditioning is the first studio in Richmond to offer clinical Pilates rehabilitation using the reformer.”
Sophie says with her winning smile, "We are a really friendly, all inclusive environment that is open to all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. We can tailor modifications to workouts, so anyone can join in and benefit from the positive effects of exercise.” True Conditioning offers classes that cater to diverse fitness needs including strength and conditioning, total body conditioning, high intensity interval training and core conditioning. All classes utilize TRX suspension training equipment. It’s your choice whether group or personal training or maybe even a little of both is right for you. What exactly is the TRX system and what does this type of workout entail? A Navy Seal invented TRX, which stands for Total Resistance Exercise. If you have ever seen black and yellow straps hanging in a gym, that’s TRX. This fullbody strength workout utilizes a October - November 2019

True Conditioning is open seven days a week, and with a wider range of classes and new extended hours from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. it is possible to squeeze in a workout either before or after work.
“One of the greatest rewards is seeing someone accomplish something they never thought was possible for themselves.” Sophie Manfredi Members’ testimonials abound. Some members are motivated by working out with a great group of people and excellent trainers, while others enjoy solo workouts with a personal trainer. Nutrition coaching is another much appreciated service. Members see noticeable reduction in their body fat, an increase in lean muscle mass,
improved energy levels and many enjoy fitness levels they never knew were possible. Sophie confesses she is a workaholic and can’t think of a better place to spend her time. Being able to sneak in a workout on the job brings her happiness. She is an advocate of supporting local businesses. Sophie enjoys forming creative partnerships with other health related companies. Beginning this fall, monthly socials with Steveston’s Britannia Brewing Company and The Juice Truck will help bring the community together. Sophie and Ryan married in August. Their dog Winston, a 5-year-old bulldog, donned a doggie tux and was the ring bearer. Clients adore the canine mascot and Sophie loves being able to bring him to work. The couple lives within walking distance of the business. Sophie is enjoying the commute and True Conditioning members who live in the village are also giving the more convenient location two thumbs up. She says, “I am so lucky to come to work every day to do something I love to do.” True Conditioning 200-3960 Chatham Street Richmond, BC, V7E 2Z7 Telephone 604-762-1175 www.trueconditioning.com

TASTEFUL INDIAN CUISINE Take Out ● Catering Orders ● Host Your Next Event at Ember
Celebrating 2 years!
As the seasons change, Ember Indian Kitchen invites you inside their waterfront restaurant to celebrate their two year anniversary.
They offer tasty cuisine starting with the freshest produce, meat and seafood purchased by local purveyors and then cooked to perfection. “Ember’s coconut curry chicken and masala halibut were a big part of my mother’s family dinners. At Ember, we fuse African and Indian cuisine using flames to ensure dishes burst with flavour. My wife Farida is in the kitchen working with the chefs to ensure the consistency of taste,” Amin says. Pair your meal with one of Ember’s Indian and African beers or cocktails and you are set for a memorable meal. They also offer a well-curated selection of local and international wine, which marry well with the food.
What is Amin’s favorite dish? Probably the Kari Kebabs, an appetizer that the Sunderji family continues to enjoy on a regular basis. “They are flavorful meatballs spiced with cumin, garlic, ginger, and cilantro,” he explains. “Like most families, food and cooking food has always brought loved ones together around the table or around the kitchen,” says Amin Sunderji. Our Samosas are also a family favorite that are lighter than usual and a must try that can be ordered with beef, chicken or vegetable filling. The black and white framed images chime certain memories for Amin. For example, the Nile River image is placed along almost the entire backmwall and is where he used to play and swim with friends. The peacock symbolizes the beauty of Africa left behind. Amin and his wife, Farida arrived in Canada, in 1972 as refugees with only suitcases to their name. “So much of our life remained in Uganda. Canada has been good to us. It is our home. Sometimes, there will be a scent of cardamom tea or freshly ground cumin that will provide a trace of memory from our days in Uganda. Ember has given a chance to share these memories through food. There are stories that were told to us by our parents that we share with our grandkids and even some lucky customers.” Ember, is now sharing new stories and new celebrations. So far, they have hosted wedding events (up to 100 people), anniversary and birthday parties, corporate lunches and dinners. Even, Joe Peschisolido proposed to his wife over a delicious Indian meal. The catering business has also taken off nicely.

The corner restaurant seats 60 indoors and 35 on the outdoor patio. The wall to wall windows with two glass roll-up garage doors open to patio seating facing the Fraser River and Shady Island; as you dine you may spot eagles and herons flying by.
Behind the scenes, the spacious stainless-steel kitchen is a chef’s dream come true. Both naan and roti are made on site in the restaurant’s gas burning tandoor. Every menu item is made from scratch by the creative hands in the kitchen. The name “Ember” salutes the popular African Indian food that was grilled over burning charcoal leaving behind bits of glowing embers. Amin and his wife, Farida have shared authentic recipes that boasts tasteful Indian cuisine. Grilled meats take centre stage alongside crowd pleasing perennial favourites such as butter chicken and vegetable pakoras. Patrons explore African Indian food through appetizers and
entrees including Zanzibar-style lentil fritters flavoured with onion and herbs, cassava fries, lamb/chicken/prawn biryani, lentil dal and cauliflower curry. Gluten-free and vegetarian selections are also offered. In a place where you can try new things and know they will be delicious, Ember Indian Kitchen is open for lunch, dinner or snacks and drinks. Skip The Dishes is available to keep up with the take out trend.
“We continue to look forward to bringing people together the best way - through flavor!” Amin says. The charming husband and wife team have come out of early retirement to embark on this adventure, and are enjoying every minute. Thank you, Steveston, for all your support!

“I have been to Indian restaurants all over the UK, US, and Canada. This restaurant has some of the finest flavours we've experienced. The Kuku Paka was sublime. The Palak paneer was absolutely top notch.” “We had a wonderful dining experience and highly recommend it to anyone who loves Indian food, African food or anything with exotic flavours. It was very impressive, and the ingredients were high quality. The ambience is also nice. Bright, easygoing and spacious.” “Went on a beautiful sunny Saturday and wiled away a few hours sipping beer, eating appies and getting a tan. Great peaceful location near the dike board walk. Almost serene. Good food and good Happy Hour prices on everything. $5.50 for an ice cold craft beer. Life is good.”

Steveston Medicine Shoppe: A Personal Approach to Wellness Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
Visiting Steveston Medicine Shoppe is like stepping back to a simpler time. Customers are greeted with a warm hello when they enter the store that specializes in compounding and dispensing medication in addition to a variety of other services. Steven Chang is the charismatic pharmacist and owner of Steveston Medicine Shoppe located at the corner of Chatham Street and No. 1 Road. He says, “This intersection is the gateway to Steveston village.”
Steven feels rooted in this community where he has lived most of his life, and it was a natural fit to establish his business here. 16
His family moved from Taiwan to Richmond when Steven began high school. Although his father dreamt of having his son follow in his footsteps as a shoe manufacturer, he opted to study Pharmacy at UBC. After graduating, Steven worked at an independent pharmacy in White Rock for five years, and then moved to a Richmond pharmacy for two more years. In 2011 Steven established Steveston Medicine Shoppe. He says, “My inspiration to open my own business was to execute a vision of seeing pharmacists as a part of disease prevention, not just someone you see when you're sick. Pharmacists are in a great position with our accessibility and training to provide information and services that help people prevent chronic diseases.”
StevestonInsider.com
October - November 2019
He points out, “We work with local organizations to provide health education workshops. One step at a time, I believe one day pharmacists will create more beneficial impacts to our health system.” Steven enjoys the freedom of running his Medicine Shoppe franchise. The pharmacy is conveniently located across the street from The Maple Residences. Residents can either cross the street to fill their own prescriptions or have Steven, pharmacy manager Angela Liou, or one of his staff make deliveries to their home. This service is available to anyone in the vicinity of the village who is unable to get out on their own.
Getting to know clients in the community is a special part of Steven’s job. Steven and his team get to know customers on a first name basis. He says, “I get to spend time with the customers, and answer their questions.” “We want to be known not just as faces behind the counter but as friends you trust, providing a high level of continuity between doctor visits, promoting a prevention-based system and encouraging healthy lifestyles,” Steven says.
October - November 2019
Today, the vast majority of medications are mass-produced by pharmaceutical drug companies. Following the model of a traditional pharmacy, Steven and Angela are trained compounding pharmacists. They can compose alternate dosages, which may come in other forms such as creams, caplets and suspensions. They can also create specialized compounds for pediatric and veterinary patients. It is even possible to combine multiple medications into a single dose. They are always on the look out for medication conflicts, which can present complex issues if a person is taking multiple medications. Each prescription's purpose, side effects and interactions are explained to clients to empower them to participate in their health decisions.

“Knowledge is power. Our pharmacists do routine medication reviews to ensure the safety of our customers’ regimens.” Steven Chang As people age, there is an increased focus on health. Each year a number of seniors are hospitalized due to improper prescription usage, nutritional depletion or simply lack of care. Steveston Medicine Shoppe’s “Time My Meds” software service takes a weight off customers’ shoulders. You no longer need to worry about prescription refills; a phone call from the pharmacy will inform you when it is time to head over or they will make a delivery.
medical histories and can refer them to their doctor if needed. In addition, Jamie Chan, a food and nutrition specialist, runs information sessions several times a week. Nutritional supplements and dietary snacks are also sold.
Vaccinations such as flu and shingles shots are available at Steveston Medicine Shoppe.
It is apparent Steven is passionate about his profession. He concludes, “The most rewarding part of being a pharmacist/pharmacy owner is seeing people's lives being changed. From a senior having multiple drug related issues fixed, to helping a mother understand how to pick the right food for herself and her family, nothing is more rewarding than seeing the positive impact we can have on people's lives. Seeing our team members grow professionally and personally to inch closer to our vision is also what keeps us all going.”
Monitoring and assisting clients with weight loss is another relatively new role for pharmacists. Clients come in each week to be weighed and to monitor their progress. Unlike weight loss centres, Steven is aware of his customers’

THE RICHMOND HOSPITAL/HEALTHCARE AUXILIARY
THRIFT SHOP
Thrift Shop renovations are proceeding, as planned, and the store is remaining open in the back half. We are operating on regular hours Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 3pm and Sundays 12 noon to 3pm (as much as possible). Entrance is by the side door. There is still a full selection of merchandise at great bargain prices including Halloween costumes. Watch for dates for the amazing Curio Sales in the new year but there will not be any more in 2019. Only revenue from Sunday sales and generous donations by the public are paying for the renovations. Revenue from all other days will continue to support healthcare in Richmond.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Do you have tips to lose weight and stay healthy? It’s scary to come to the realization that your health and your future hinges on whether you’re willing to commit to losing weight. Put bluntly, your risk of heart-attack and stroke is directly related to your body composition, and, specifically, your body fat percentage. It is almost impossible to achieve fat loss on your own, regardless of what you read on popular webpages; the typical high-protein, high-fat keto diet is actually harmful; vitamin injections alone will lead to muscle loss; finally, we cannot outrun a bad diet. The most effective method is to enroll in a sciencebased, tailored, pharmacist-lead lifestyle program, such as Ideal Protein, and be held accountable to a trusted pharmacist coach at regular, weekly meetings. Once you take the plunge, your body will respond phenomenally, and you will inevitably be motivated not only by your perpetual and lasting fat/weight loss progress in Phase 1, but also by how energized you feel, how well you’ll sleep/rest, as well as feel the reduction in inflammation in your entire body (eg. achy joints), and the balancing of your hormones by an adequate protein, low fat, low carb lifestyle. Come and get all the details from Fred Cheng.
