Publisher's Note
Welcome to our first issue of 2023!
Looking back, Christmas was magical. Some snow remained when Santa arrived by boat on December 4. People enjoyed old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage rides thanks to the Steveston Merchants Association and Tourism Richmond, raising money for the Richmond Christmas Fund. Steveston merchants created beautiful holiday displays, and we congratulate the grand prize winner, Anar Persian Grill, for transforming the restaurant’s exterior into a charming gingerbread house. Collective Beauty Studio earned the most online votes, followed by Steveston’s Best of British.
We have made it through the short dark days of winter, and spring isn’t far off. People are marking their calendars for the Family Day long weekend on February 20. Daylight saving time begins March 12, coinciding with school spring break from March 13 to 24. Easter falls early this year (Good Friday is April 7).
On the cover is Amin Sunderji; he and his wife, Farida, are excited to be celebrating the fifth anniversary of Ember Indian Kitchen. Discover why their well-loved restaurant draws people from near and far.
Read about Tammy Sill, the owner of Balloon Place, whose personality is as cheerful as the balloons she sells. She carries an impressive collection of over 5,000 balloons! The exciting news is the shop has been renovated and is now fully visible from the street.
Hayat Supermarket will be opening this spring in the former 7-Eleven location. Sadly, M Sushi Bar has closed.
We are looking forward to the longer and warmer days of spring (and hopefully a lot more sunshine!), so we can get out and enjoy every ounce of this beautiful seaside village.
EMBER INDIAN KITCHEN: A First Class Dining Experience
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier and submittedIt has been five years since Amin and Farida Sunderji opened their well-loved Ember Indian Kitchen in Steveston’s scenic London Landing neighbourhood. Food, conversation, and laughter have always been integral to Amin and Farida; therefore, the opportunity to own and operate a restaurant seemed like a natural fit. They returned from early retirement in 2017 to offer their home community of Steveston a firstclass Indian dining experience.
The couple met and married in Uganda, their country of origin. In 1972 Ugandan dictator Idi Amin banished Asians who held British passports from the country, giving families only 90 days to leave. “It was a very traumatic time,” says Amin. He was relieved that Canada warmly welcomed Ugandan refugees.
Their daughter Saleema Sunderji is very proud to be a first-generation Canadian. She mentions, “We brought Ugandan cuisine to Steveston.” The Sunderjis previously owned a furniture store
for over 35 years. They designed the elegant restaurant with the assistance of Saleema, who has followed in her parents' footsteps; she and here husband own Yaletown Interiors.
Their goal was to create a unique and modern look that would set Ember apart from traditional Indian restaurants.
The bright space features high ceilings adorned with black and white chandeliers and pendant lights, which creates an exotic ambience. Beams made from reclaimed wood suspend light fixtures. Two magnificent oversized black and white prints are well-chosen representations of the two continents that come together in Ember’s cuisine. One photo captures a felucca
boat on the Nile River, while the other showcases a gorgeous peacock, an Indian symbol of grace, joy, beauty, and love.
Situated close to the boardwalk overlooking Shady Island and the Fraser River, you may spot eagles and herons as you dine.
The restaurant seats 60 guests indoors and 35 on the patio, which was recently enclosed with a roof and plexiglass half walls; this creates an airy aesthetic while offering an outdoor dining experience. Amin says an outdoor heating system is next on their wish list and hopes to have it in place this year.
Ember is a lovely space to host events such as anniversaries, birthdays, and other celebrations. They will happily create set menus for parties. “We will plan a quality event while considering a group’s budget,” remarks Amin.
Ember’s staff enriches the exceptional dining experience.
Saleema mentions, “Ember’s staff have ridden side by side with my parents and are an important part of the restaurant’s success.”
The business name salutes the popular African Indian method of grilling over charcoal embers. Ember’s specialty is African Indian food, spotlighting regional dishes from northern and southern Indian cuisine. Grilled meats take centre stage alongside extremely popular dishes such as butter chicken.
Patrons explore African Indian food through appetizers and entrees such as the signature coconut chicken curry, lamb vindaloo, masala halibut, prawn biryani, chicken tikka and channa masala. Both naan and roti are made on-site in the restaurant’s gas-burning tandoor. Amin says, “Tandoori dishes have become very popular in the last six months.”
New protein dishes are now offered, including rock cod biryani and lamb tikka. Saleema says, “Increasingly, people are looking for healthy menu options.” Gluten-free and vegetarian selections are also featured on the menu.
Ember is a destination that attracts many diners, including families with young children. Amin comments, “Kids love Indian cuisine. They are adventurous eaters.”
“The quality of food is our number one priority. It is very important to us that the community enjoys Ember. We want it to feel like home,” says Amin.
Farida works magic in the kitchen while Amin makes personal connections by circulating to diners’ tables. In addition, he oversees front-ofhouse operations, ordering and staffing.
During the pandemic, Amin created a large menu and posted it outdoors. It was a marketing tool that attracted attention. The menu also evolved during this time to focus on increased takeout orders.
When restaurants were mandated to close, some of Ember’s loyal customers ordered from them as often as two to three times a week to help support their favourite restaurant. Amin says, “We are extremely grateful to all our customers for their steadfast support during COVID-19. When businesses reopened, many customers made a point of coming to Ember as their first choice.”
Metro Vancouver Dine Out takes place each January. During this time, they often introduce new items to the menu. This event, along with Open Table, exposes the
business to many new diners who come from across the Lower Mainland.
Some tourists visit Steveston specifically to dine at Ember. Amin says, “It is common for American tourists to google ‘Indian food’ and detour to Ember on their way to the border.”
“After celebrating our fifth anniversary this past September, I can certainly say it’s been a labour of love for my wife and me for many reasons. We enjoy feeding people and appreciate the continuous support from the Steveston community. Our goals have superseded just serving the community; we are so grateful to have built lifetime friendships at Ember,” says Amin.

BALLOON PLACE: Spreading Happiness
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Carolynne PallaBalloons are often connected with celebrating life’s special moments and helping to elevate moods. With these objectives in mind, Tammy Still opened Balloon Place, as no other store of its kind existed in the area. As a bonus, her personality is as cheerful as the balloons she sells.
Over the last six years, Balloon Place has moved three times within the same building on First Avenue near Bayview Street. Six months before the pandemic, the shop settled into its current location and has almost doubled in size. The new shop is visible from the street; customers can see through the glass door, whereas the previous store was tucked away. Another advantage is the new storefront has a high ceiling which is integral to building high floating bouquets and large arches.
When Tammy’s nephews were young, she wanted to throw them elaborate parties, so she learnt the art of balloon arrangements and discovered she had a talent for it. She attended
balloon school in San Fernando, California. Tammy also took courses with Qualatex Balloons, where she learned about helium and other gases, balloon arrangement, colour charts and designs to become a balloon artist. Tammy furthers her knowledge with continuing education courses.
She previously worked as a realtor in her native Los Angeles. After relocating to Calgary, Tammy continued to work in real estate until the market slumped, and she headed to the Lower Mainland to work in strata management. Realizing that career was not for her, she followed her passion and began working with a Vancouver-based balloon business until she opened Balloon Place.
Tammy has resided in Steveston since 2007 with her husband and business partner, Steve Olson. She mentions, “I am ecstatic to be here. I have always wanted to be part of a small and special community.”
“I am a workaholic who forgot to have kids,” says Tammy. She may be the biggest kid of all, and owning a business that makes people happy is her driving force.
Balloon Place carries over 5,000 balloons.
Tammy remarks, “Customers are shocked at the choices and say they haven’t seen anything like it. I have approximately 50 racks of balloons. There is something for everybody.”
Orders of any size are possible, from a single special balloon to a bouquet that can fill a room for a special event. Whether you are celebrating an engagement, a baby reveal party, a birthday, graduation, marriage or retirement, balloons add the crowning touch. Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day and Canada Day are made more special with the addition of colourful balloons.
Balloons have a way of brightening someone's day.
Tammy admits the pandemic was a difficult time for her business. With so many events cancelled, she lost conventions, weddings, graduation ceremonies and parties. She is extremely grateful to her clients who supported her by ordering birthday balloons, which kept her afloat. Adult children put extra effort into Mother’s and Father’s Day by sending balloon bouquets when they couldn’t visit their parents in person.
In addition to the pandemic hurdle, the cost of helium has increased globally, which has caused Tammy to raise her prices slightly and look for more options.
A new alternative is AirLoonz; these largescale free-standing air-filled balloons feature many characters, such as unicorns, dinosaurs, birthday cakes, and many seasonal favourites. They range from four to five feet in height. Visit Balloon Place’s website to view the wide varieties available.
If you can imagine it, Balloon Place can make it.
Putting gifts inside balloons is making a comeback. Tammy can put a small stuffed animal, money, a grad present, baby clothes, or even a boxed engagement ring inside an eighteen-inch air-filled balloon. Customers are welcome to bring their own soft items, although candy and anything with LED lights are not possible.
Some companies water down their helium with nitrogen; however, Balloon Place uses 99% helium in latex balloons. With the addition of high-float, balloons will float three days longer. Foil balloons will float for seven days and are refillable. Tammy suggests not releasing the helium as some will remain inside, and it will cost less to refill it next time.
Customers come into the shop to pick up their balloons, or Steve will make deliveries for a fee. Tammy says, “Steve is the best arch and column builder.” These items can also be delivered in their delivery vans.
The shop’s busiest time of the year is high school graduation. She and Steve will often work 16-hour days building arches and bouquets.
Tammy recalls an occasion when balloons saved a relationship. She was at home in her pyjamas when she received an after-hours call from a fellow in a panic. He was standing outside
the shop, having forgotten to get a birthday bouquet for his significant other. Tammy drove to the store and bailed him out.
Tammy says, “I am so grateful to my customers; they are super sweet and supportive. This is such a happy and rewarding industry. The best part of my job is when customers come in to pick up their bouquets, and I witness their excitement and smiles. I love spreading happiness.”

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER
Why are there two vaccines for pneumonia? Do I need both?
There are more than two vaccines in B.C., but the most important are Pneumovax 23 (P23) and Prevnar 20 (P20). The difference is that P23 is a polysaccharide vaccine consisting of the sugar part of the bacteria, whereas P20 is a conjugate vaccine which contains the sugar attached to a carrier protein. The conjugate vaccine, Prevnar 20, will not only elicit a stronger immune response, but also a longer-lasting one. The effects of P23 generally lasts only 5-6 years, and thus requires a booster every 5 years. If you have received the government vaccine (P23), you should get P20 one year later. If you had the older Prevnar 13 followed by P23, then you do not need the new P20. The protection from P20 should last a life-time, but you do need to get a booster of P23 every 5 years.
The danger of pneumonia is that the bacteria can spread from the lungs to other parts of the body in invasive cases, affecting the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), the blood (bacteremima), as well as the sinus and the ear. It could affect people of all ages, but those under 5 and over 65 tend to be at the highest risk and should get vaccinated; special populations between those ages, such as those with existing heart, liver, lung disease or diabetes, may require protection as well.
