Publisher's Note
Spring has arrived! As the days lengthen and the temperature warms, Steveston Village comes alive with people walking, cycling, enjoying patio time and catching up on street corners. Explore Fisherman’s Wharf, where fishing boats sell freshly caught seafood from our local waters. The village’s unique shops, restaurants and beautiful backdrop make our community a popular destination for travellers and daytrippers.
We welcome tour operators who will visit the village from April 22 to May 31 for the Tourism Neighbourhood Challenge. We celebrate Mother’s Day and the annual plant sale at London Heritage Farm in May. The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market opens for the season on May 7. The Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration occurs from May 16 to June 18. Steveston Salmon Festival planning is well underway (the parade is returning!), as is the construction of the new community centre.
The cover story features Lisa Eccleshall, owner of ASK Hair Studio; her salon has provided award-winning hair styling services since it opened in 2014. Their motto, ‘style without attitude,’ invites clients to relax in this friendly, soothing and freshly renovated environment.
Read about Steveston Hub, located on the second floor of the Nikka Building. This alternative community space fosters community engagement, wellness and collaboration. The Hub hosts multiple events and programs; many organizations use the facility to host meetings and workshops.
Cocoru Beer & Chicken and Dalaga Beauty Studio have recently closed, and the space is for lease. Sadly, Pajo’s Garry Point location has shut down, but Pajo’s flagship Wharf location is still open for business. Aves Early Education Centre is opening near London Landing. Murrick Insurance is opening. Aloha Hawaiian Grill is opening where Chicko Chicken closed. Pure Beauty Spa now shares space with Bellatudo. Tranquility Therapeutic Massage has moved upstairs on Chatham Street.
Stroll through the village, and enjoy all the amenities our historic seaside community offers, including the welcoming people who call this special place home.
ASK HAIR STUDIO: Style Without the Attitude
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier and submittedAfter years of wanting to renovate Ask Hair Studio, owner Lisa Eccleshall took the plunge in January when she closed the business for eleven days. The results are beautiful; the seaside salon feels even more tranquil and is a great space to relax while you have your locks cared for by one of ASK’s talented stylists.
Lisa says, “Doing this big of a project took a lot of time, planning, budgeting, and sourcing of materials; it wasn’t for the faint of heart! It also couldn’t be done alone. I had so much support; this wouldn’t have been possible without it. The man behind the scenes, my hubby Clive, is my go-to whenever I come up with any crazy ideas. He takes my creativity, applies his math, and puts my dreams into reality.”
With a general contractor at the helm, a new laminate floor was put down to replace the slate floor. Three new wash stations were added along with two chairs, increasing the workstations to six. Clive created custom inserts for the stylists’ workstations, upgraded the
backroom storage and painted. The entire Ask team and additional friends helped lend a hand to get the salon open for business as quickly as possible.
Ask Hair Studio celebrates its seventeenth anniversary in July.
In 2006, Lisa opened her own business after working in the industry for eight years. She and Clive (who co-owns Ask) thought Steveston village needed a young and fresh approach to hair styling. They had their finger on the pulse; the studio is thriving and has never been busier.
It is a priority to offer clients a high-end downtown salon experience. Lisa wants Ask to stand apart from the rest, with a strong emphasis on customer service. She says, “People are spending a lot of money in all areas of their lives, and service has generally decreased. We want our clients to see value in our service.”
Jamie Price, one of Ask’s long-time stylists, trains new stylists under the studio’s associate program. Lisa says, “They train with Jamie to ensure they are up to Ask’s standards when they hit the floor.” The staff also have regular one on one meetings with Lisa to monitor their progress and map out career goals.
Ask is a Redken flagship salon; the team attends events and travels together to attend Redken classes and symposiums. Lisa enjoys fostering professional growth in her stylists. Education is the driving force for the team and one of the salon’s core values.
Lisa and Jamie have also had the opportunity to participate backstage at Vancouver Fashion Week for six seasons. Lisa says, “It gets the creative juices flowing. Jamie and I have trained to join the L.A. and New York Fashion Week team.”
“We are constantly upgrading our skills, so we are always on top of our game. No matter what you request, we have a stylist for you,” says Lisa.
The company’s mission is to offer ‘style without the attitude.’ To make clients feel comfortable, they endeavour to create an atmosphere where clients feel like they are at home in a living room; it's a place to relax, enjoy and indulge. Most importantly, they strive to keep lines of communication open with clients so they feel as comfortable as if they are chatting with their best friend.
Lisa comments, “Our clients confide in us. Your hair stylist is always on your side.”
During the pandemic, Ask introduced a very convenient online booking which has met with great response. Clients request their booking online, and the admin sends an approval.
Gender-neutral pricing is a relatively recent change the salon has initiated. “We wanted to create a safe space. I thought it was important to make everyone feel comfortable and included. It is based on a person’s time behind the chair rather than one’s gender. A short clipper cut takes the same time no matter your gender,” says Lisa.
What are this season’s trends? Balayage remains Ask’s most requested service. This technique involves applying colour to create a graduated, more natural-looking highlight effect. The money piece (face-framing blonde highlights) is also very popular.
“We are like a family. I try to foster this feeling.”
Ask’s many talented artists keep you looking your best. Lisa specializes in low maintenance colours, Gloria is a master colourist, Jamie is a blonding specialist, and Erin loves creating vivid colours. Jenna is a Bellami certified extensionist, Julia is a Philocaly certified extensionist, and Shana is a custom colourist.
All of Ask’s stylists update their education regularly to maintain the highest standards in the salon. Visit Ask’s Instagram page @askhairstudio for a full sampling of the stylist’s work.
Ask has placed in the top three of The Richmond News’ Best of Richmond award for the last thirteen years.
To accommodate people’s busy lives, Ask is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Lisa is an advocate of giving back to the community. Some current causes Ask supports include Mamas for Mamas (a specialized poverty relief agency and an all-inclusive community for mothers and caregivers), Wigs for Kids and the Pink Shirt Day Mental Health Foundation. They also support local schools and other fundraising events.
“Steveston is such a special and unique area.
It has been a pleasure getting to know all our locals and business owners throughout the years and watching our community grow. I love this town so much. I feel fortunate to work, travel, and learn from such a talented team. Some of my closest relationships have come from this space. This chapter of my life has held so many rewards I hold dear to my heart,” says Lisa.

STEVESTON HUB: Helping the Community Thrive
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos submittedMany people remember the Nikka building on Moncton Street as Storybrooke Library on the TV show Once Upon a Time. Today, when you look up to the second floor, you will see a sign for Steveston Hub, an alternative community space occupying 5,000 square feet of the building.
Nick and Jamie Osborne and Darren and Crista Lof are the two couples who run this non-profit organization funded by donations from outside organizations that use the space and support the Hub’s vision to help the community flourish.
The Hub is a labour of love for the four founders. They all hold other jobs and give their time to the Hub. Nick’s church pays him a parttime wage for his work at the non-profit.
Bayview Street. The churches were from different backgrounds but worked to create an alternative community space, and the Steveston Hub was born. Given the size of the room, the first uses were for coworking and yoga classes.
Over time, two of the churches moved to other areas of Richmond; Lighthouse Steveston and Gather Steveston churches now sponsor the Hub.
Nick is Lighthouse’s pastor, while Darren is Gather’s pastor. Nick notes that the churches are two denominations, but now all Church at the Hub gatherings are held together.
In January 2019, four small Steveston churches were offered the use of a small room on
“We want to support all things that help the village thrive,” says Nick.
Nick says, “Church at the Hub gatherings are built around the values of experiencing community and equipping people to live well Monday through Saturday. Because of this, not every Sunday is what you might call a 'typical' Sunday morning service. The service includes time for musical or art-based worship, food, and relevant, conversational discussion about spiritual wellbeing in the journey through life.”
He adds, “We meet for worship, community, and dialogue. All are welcome, including dogs!”
The Hub moved to its current location in March 2020, right before COVID-19 shut everything down.
Over the past two years, the Hub has presented and hosted multiple events and programs, including open mic nights for poets and musicians, art shows, auctions for local artists, trivia night, a Halloween murder mystery, dances, and artisan markets. Musicians also use the venue for practices, concerts, and video filming. The non-profit also hosts meetings and workshops for other non-profit and for-profit organizations.
Three yoga organizations (Calla Prana, 8th Element and Wild Way) hold regular classes in the Hub’s yoga studio. Coworking and art studio spaces are available three days a week for people looking for a place to work or paint.
Every Friday night Swingout Richmond holds swing dance lessons. Nick, Jamie, Darren, and Crista take classes together and have a great time.
“We have built our three pillars on community engagement, wellness and collaboration,” says Nick.
“We gather voices, perspectives, and backgrounds. It is so enriching; it is a rewarding perspective of life.”
Nick remarks, “The first two years, it was like crickets and cobwebs due to the pandemic; now we are seeing monthly growth in how the space is used.”
Over 30 artists sell their creations at the Hub’s twice-annual artisan markets. This past Christmas, the market attracted over 1,500 people. Nick reports that some vendors said it was the best market they have exhibited at based on the atmosphere and the low booth rental fee. “We want to give them a good experience. Jamie does an excellent job organizing the markets,” says Nick.
“What we do at the Hub is an extension of what we do at the church.”
The foursome finds joy in offering the Hub back to the community. Nick comments, “People feel welcomed, safe, and encouraged at church gatherings. A huge reward is when a person comes in and takes another step to be fully
alive. Whenever people are in the building, we hear plenty of laughter which we highly value.”
The Hub’s future is murky. The current building is under application to be torn down and rebuilt for commercial and residential occupancy. When that happens, the non-profit will look for a new affordable home in the village to continue its mission to help Steveston flourish.

Are there natural products I can take for my seasonal allergies?
Perpetual symptoms of a runny nose, stuffy sinuses, tickly throat, sneezing, teary eyes, and coughing are downright frustrating. The traditional Chinese medical herbs found in Omega Alpha’s liquid Resprit can quickly clear the throat and lungs, as well as soothe the areas. It is popular during the fire season. A plant pigment (“flavonoid”) called Quercetin functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory to battle the symptoms of upper-respiratory allergies. It is found in green tea, apples, onions, berries, but high therapeutic doses are best achieved through supplementation with, eg., Omega Alpha’s Quercetin capsules or in combinations such as New Root Herbal’s Vitamin C8 capsules. Quercetin is typically used for maintenance and prevention, but can also be found in a combination capsule called D-Hist (by Othro Molecular), where it is combined with the likes of Stinging Nettle, Bromelain, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, and Vitamin C to effectively control seasonal allergy symptoms. There is even a D-Hist Jr. for children. Many clients report benefit in using Omega Alpha’s Lung Flush periodically to keep the lungs in top shape. An inert nasal gel, e.g. Secaris or Rhinaris, along with a good air-purifier can also effectively minimize the triggering of allergy symptoms.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER
What’s new when filing 2022 taxes this year?
There are two increases to existing tax credits for 2022. For those who bought their first home, the first-time home buyers’ tax credit amount has been increased to $10,000. Seniors or taxpayers who hold a valid disability tax credit are eligible for the home accessibility tax credit of up to $20,000 for renovations that make a home more accessible. Come by our office and we will help maximize your tax return.
How will I be affected if the Canada Revenue Agency employees go on strike?
The Public Service Alliance of Canada, which includes the Union of Taxation Employees group, are predicted to go on strike mid-April. Taxpayers should not expect any extension to the filing deadline of April 30, or June 15 for those with self-employment income. For those with balances owing, the payment deadline will not be extended. We recommend completing tax returns ahead of mid-April to minimize the impact of a strike on your filing.
Please call or drop by our office in Steveston and we’ll be happy to help you.
