Summer greetings, Steveston!

As the hot days of summer wind down, we prepare for the cooler days of autumn in this beautiful seaside community.

The 76th annual Steveston Salmon Festival was a wonderful way to celebrate Canada Day; an impressive display of fireworks capped off the festivities. Next up are the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, Richmond Maritime Festival, and Culture Days. There is still time to head to the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market, Vintage Fair in Town Square Park, visit the exhibits at the heritage sites, or book a Steveston Alive walking tour. Tourism Richmond’s free Discover Shuttle connects visitors to the village from downtown Richmond to Steveston; it operates on weekends and statutory holidays through September 4.

The Steveston Merchants Association (SMA) is busy planning our community’s favourite fall events. We look forward to the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treating in the Village, Girls’ Night Out, the Holiday Window Contest, Santa’s arrival by boat and much more as the SMA partners with Tourism Richmond and the City of Richmond for ‘Winter in the Village.’

Goodco. Bars is Steveston’s newest waterfront restaurant that specializes in providing good

times for good people. As you stroll along the boardwalk, you will notice customers on the patio taking in the picturesque view of the Fraser River, which is part of the overall experience.

In this issue, we introduce you to Peculiar Leather & Jewelry Artworks. This newly opened shop is owned and operated by Efrain Perdomo, a multi-talented artisan who is a goldsmith, leathersmith and diamond polisher. He also offers jewellery and leathersmith classes for those interested in creating beautiful pieces from natural materials.

Since the last issue, we have welcomed several new businesses to the neighbourhood, including Oretachi Curry (opening soon), Pure Motion Fitness and Saint Medical Spa. Satori Integrative Health Centre is relocating within the village, With Our Own Two Hands Flexible Childcare has closed the Chatham Street location, and Life Musique Academy has moved.

Stroll the boardwalk, watch the fishing boats, dine at one of Steveston’s many restaurants and cafes, browse the unique shops, and savour the summer sunshine. As always, we thank you for loyally supporting our local businesses.

GOODCO. BARS: Providing Good Times for Good People

Walk east along Steveston’s boardwalk, and you will see customers having a good time inside and outside GoodCo. Bars, where a picturesque view of the Fraser River and Shady Island is part of the experience. GoodCo. is one of the recent additions to Steveston’s busy restaurant scene; the chain specializes in providing good times for good people.

The first location opened in Kitsilano; the company now operates four additional

restaurants, including Main Street, Granville Street (the largest space at over 15,000 square feet), Northwoods (North Vancouver), and Steveston’s prime waterfront location which opened last summer.

GoodCo. operates as a restaurant with a bar atmosphere. It attracts all ages and walks of life, including families, friends, and coworkers, who gather to enjoy brunch, casual lunch on the patio, happy hour, an evening meal, or a night out to watch a game on the big screen. The large restaurant seats 100 guests indoors with 75 seats on the patio.

GoodCo.’s mission is to provide a home away from home where drinks flow, great food is served, the music is on point, and the game is always on.

Ximena Zapata is the new general manager of Steveston’s GoodCo.; she came on board this past March. The assistant manager has been with the business since it opened. A team of 35 staff work alongside them. Many are seasonal, and most have been with the restaurant since it opened.

“When the owners first came to Steveston to scout properties, they were inspired by the view and the incredibly close-knit community. There was no way to pass an opportunity to have a restaurant/bar along the river. It is a privilege to work every day with such an amazing view and equally amazing guests,” says Ximena.

She adds, “We are still a young restaurant, working every day to become our best. Our end goal will take time. We appreciate all the support. Steveston is a seasonal location, and we wouldn’t be able to get by without the locals.”

Ximena mentions, “GoodCo. is best known for its prime location and affordable prices. We have a large happy hour food menu and greatpriced drinks.”

“Stevestonites have told us that this restaurant concept was needed and has brought extra life to the area.”

“Every day of the week, a different special is offered, including Tapped Out Tuesdays ($4 draft beer and Jameson highballs that beat inflation and your thirst), and this is just the tip of the iceberg. We currently have trivia on Mondays. My assistant manager and I have plans to bring on more community events this fall. We would like to bring paint nights, live music, movie nights and more,” she says.

When dining in Steveston, it is hard to resist seafood. Some of GoodCo.’s most popular dishes include Pacific cod tacos and fish and chips. The made-in-house smash burgers are also hot sellers. Brunch has been steadily

increasing, and diners are drawn to the CB Benedict, the California Benedict, and the hearty Stadium breakfast bowl.

Four flavours of margaritas usually clean the bar out of lime juice.

The restaurant takes pride in being able to support many breweries, particularly local ones. The bar has 14 permanent taps featuring Strathcona, Philips Brewing and Molson. They also have six rotating taps; the concept is to try

different beer you usually don’t find elsewhere and support local brewers throughout Metro Vancouver.

If you are looking to host a large event GoodCo. offers a variety of buyouts or large reservations for up to 25 people. The event coordinator organizes larger groups and supplies information regarding purchasing the entire space or a smaller section in the back of the restaurant.

Ximena says, “GoodCo. understands that Steveston is a very close community, and

we depend on local support. We are taking the initiative to give back and listen to our patrons’ needs. We are constantly learning about our demographic and the unique history of Steveston. Going into the fall, you will hopefully see our name more often in community events. Our goal is to become a staple within Steveston.”

Can NMN be the fountain of youth?

NMN has received much attention recently for its purported abilities to slow down aging.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (“NMN”) is a precursor to an important coenzyme, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is present in every living cell. PECULIAR LEATHER & JEWELRY ARTWORKS: A Lifelong Passion

Peculiar Leather & Jewelry Artworks is one of Steveston’s newest shops, owned and operated by Efrain Perdomo. This multi-talented artisan is a goldsmith, leathersmith and diamond polisher. The business opened in June 2023 on Second Avenue below Britannia Brewing Company.

Originally from Punta del Este, Uruguay, Efrain studied at Escuela Bellas Artes in Montevideo and has continued developing techniques reflecting his passion for the arts. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, Canada, Italy, Spain, and Uruguay art galleries.

After moving to Brazil, he worked alongside international master goldsmiths H. Stern and Roditti Jewellers. He immigrated to Canada with his wife, Carolina, and their five children in 1997. They settled in Yellowknife, where Efrain designed and made one-of-a-kind pieces for Tiffany’s New York under the subsidiary Laurelton’s Diamonds; this opportunity enhanced his love for precious stones. While in Yellowknife, he opened his first Canadian studio and gallery.

He became interested in jewellery making at age 16 when his brother taught him to solder wires. He says, “It all started from there, and it’s

Efrain and his family moved to White Rock in 2018, where Peculiar won the Community Votes White Rock 2022 award for best jeweller and jewellery store.

He had always liked Steveston and wanted to set up shop here but couldn’t find a storefront to lease. He says, “I worked on my patience by visiting the village once a week to find the perfect spot.”

His dream of relocating to the village became a reality this year, and he has created a welcoming space. You will see beautiful jewellery housed in glass display cases as you enter the shop. Necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets are showcased alongside unfinished stones and gems, which Efrain cuts and polishes.

Some of the stones and gems Efrain works with include abalone, amber, amethyst, ammolite, ammonite (fossilized snail), citrine, emeralds, goldstone, labradorite, lapis lazuli, moonstone, pearls, rose quartz, rubies and turquoise.

He may purchase a stone without an immediate plan, but the muse will always appear. In addition to selling pieces on display, Efrain is happy to work with clients on commissions.

Efrain’s creativity is limitless. Each piece is carefully crafted and polished to explore the beauty of a stone to create the right shape, colour, and texture.

Also displayed are paintings by artists Marilyn Hurst, Chris MacClure and Carolina Licon. Works featuring wildlife and B.C. landscapes are lovely additions to the gallery.

He works with leather from water buffalos, crocodiles, lizards and cows to make belts, wallets, and beautiful bags inset with stones and metal.

His loyal White Rock customers continue to visit the Steveston store. People purchase his creations for anniversaries, birthdays, holiday gifts, or as a gift for themselves or a lucky recipient.

Not many people can claim to have worked in one profession since they were 16. Efrain says, “I love being my own boss. This is work combined with something I really enjoy. It’s my passion - I love it.”

The back of the store is the creative space where you can watch Efrain working at his leather, gem cutting, polishing and shining stations. He also offers jewellery and leathersmith classes to those who share his passion for creating beautiful pieces from natural materials.
