Publisher's Note We love Steveston year round, but our waterfront village has an extra special sparkle during the holiday season.
songs at Steveston Museum's Town Square Park for the first three Saturdays in December (see page 10 for details).
It's running into friends and neighbours as you shop. It's the beautifully decorated store windows and unique items merchants select for customers to put under their trees. It's the services that help beautify us for the season. And let's not forget the exceptional restaurants that fill with people who are out to celebrate, raise a glass and enjoy some of the best and most diverse food choices around.
Read about the owners of Steveston Bakery, Hemant Rao and his wife Bimla Rao, who strongly believe in traditions. For instance, every Saturday you can buy sourdough bread at the unbelievable original price of .99¢ a loaf.
The Steveston Merchants Association just hosted another successful Girls’ Night Out and is ready for the Annual Christmas Classic and Custom Car Cruise around Steveston Village at 12:15pm on December 3. Following the car cruise head to Fisherman’s Wharf to be part of the excited crowd that welcomes Santa as he arrives aboard a Vancouver Whale Watch boat at 1pm. Follow Santa to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery where you can take a photo with him. While you are there shop at the Cannery Farmers’ Market and see the Festival of Trees decorated by Steveston merchants and other community groups. View the classic cars on display at the Gulf of Georgia and Buck & Ear parking lots; the Richmond Christmas Fund staff will be collecting donations. Other events taking place during the festive season include the Steveston Village Office Party, Christmas concerts, winter hayrides and the Steveston Santa Claus Parade. Experience Winter Tram at the Steveston Interurban Tram or join in the singing of favourite holiday
Pure Beauty Spa owner Elena Zavelion practices the European method of aesthetic skin care and is known is known for her facial services. At the same location is Nailz by Nancy. Nancy Bergeron creates beautiful and artistic nails that inspire people to comment, "I love your nails!" The Woodman family are the owners of the magical Ho Ho Ho House. The festive foursome have been delighting people over the last 30 years with their Christmas spirit! On the cover are Steveston moms Jenelle Marshall and Leah Bailey who love shopping in Steveston. Jenelle opened Hunni’s clothing store in 2016 and Leah just started an at-home daycare. 'Tis the season to be thankful for our authentic and relaxed small town shopping experience, something that malls strive for but can not duplicate. From my family to yours, I wish you all the joy of the holiday season and look forward to many good things for Steveston Village in 2018.

Steveston Museum and the Interurban Tram Welcomes in Christmas on December 2 Story by Gabrielle Sharp Warm up for the start of the holiday season with two events at the Steveston Interurban Tram and Steveston Museum on Saturday, December 2. Experience Winter Tram at the Steveston Interurban Tram from noon to 3:00 p.m. with free family activities including crafts and festive refreshments. As part of your visit, explore the gorgeous restoration of Tram Car 1220 in detail. From its polished wood interior, specially woven rattan seats and brass fittings through to its red and cream exterior, it looks very much like a tram that Santa would ride on his trip south. During Winter Tram, if you peak around the corner near the Christmas tree, you may just see the jolly man himself as Santa will be on site to hear the wish of every child who visits the Tram on the day. For more information go to www. richmond.ca/interurban1220 or call 604-2388081. After leaving the Tram building, head west for a quick walk to Steveston Museum’s Town Square Park for the inaugural Songs in the Snow. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 9 and 16, bring your family to celebrate the spirit of Richmond in winter. Join the singing of favourite holiday songs performed by local community and school groups and create a vintage-style Christmas craft or two. Take a selfie beneath the beautiful illuminations in the park, enjoy free refreshments and explore the Japanese Building on-site for a different seasonal installation for each of the three event evenings.
10
In the holiday spirit of community and giving, this year’s Songs in the Snow supports the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary Thrift Shop building restoration on Chatham Street in Steveston and Ignite the Warmth, which provides blankets to the homeless. Bring a cash donation and/or a blanket for each of these worthy charities. Songs in the Snow is presented by the Steveston Historical Society, the City of Richmond and the Richmond Arts Coalition. This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between Richmond Community Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast. For more information, visit historicsteveston.ca. These two events are just the beginning of the Christmas in Steveston Village weekend. The festivities continue on Sunday, December 3 with events in and around the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Steveston Village. Don’t forget the local highlight of Santa’s arrival by boat at Fisherman’s Wharf at 1:00 pm. The Steveston Interurban Tram is located at 4011 Moncton Street. Visit us daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Friday, December 22. The Steveston Museum is located at 3811 Moncton Street and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Steveston Bakery: Baked Daily From Scratch Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
It’s the stuff childhood memories are made of, looking inside Steveston Bakery’s glass display case and eagerly examining the selection of over sized cookies. The only hard part is deciding which to pick; will it be a Smartie, chocolate chip, or oatmeal raisin cookie? Owner Hemant Rao and his wife Bimla Rao have been putting smiles on customer’s faces since 1989 when they opened the business. Hemant thanks his longtime friend Ray Martyniuk for giving him the idea to open a bakery in Steveston village. The couple is originally from Fiji; they visit their homeland every three years. “I wish we could take a Christmas vacation but that is the busiest time at the bakery,” Hemant says. Hemant started his career at Vancouver’s first Bread Garden location in Kitsilano. During his six years with the company he worked his way up to assume the position of head baker. He used to live in Richmond and enjoyed visiting Steveston on the weekends, so it made sense
12
to locate his business here.
“I am an old school baker. I make everything from scratch.” Hemant Rao The first shift begins at 3:00 a.m. Hemant arrives a little later and works alongside his baking team. In addition to working in the kitchen he also finds time to shop daily to ensure the freshest ingredients are on hand for soups, sandwiches and baked goods. He shops locally as much as possible and Richmond Country Farms is one of his favourite destinations for produce. Some of Steveston Bakery’s treats include a long list of tasty pies with seasonal fruits that are labelled with their initials on top. A is for apple, B is for blueberry and in some cases you will find delicious combo pies such as an AB (apple blueberry). Using vegetable shortening rather than lard makes for a denser and more robust crust.
December 2017 - January 2018

Hemant says, “We go through 100 pounds of apples a week. They are all hand peeled and we do not use any prepared fillings.” Other popular fresh baked goods include bread, buns, croissants, cakes, cheesecakes, Danishes, flans, loaves, muffins, pastries and scones. The apple turnovers and all products containing apples are sure-fire hits. “Tradition is important to me,” Hemant says. He refers to the old Woodward’s $1.49 day advertising campaign and says he decided to create a weekly special of his own.
Every Saturday you will find sourdough bread at the unbelievable price of .99¢ a loaf, which is the original price from 1989.
Hemant enjoys cake decorating and is known for his artistry.
If cake is your weakness head to the display case to see what’s available or place a special order to suit the occasion. A few of the tantalizing options include Bailey’s Irish Cream, Black Forest, chocolate ganache, chocolate Grand Marnier, German chocolate, mango mousse and St. Honore cake. In addition, cheesecakes come in a variety of fruit loaded flavours and fruit flans are also on the menu.
Open seven days a week, fresh baked goods are made daily, and any remaining day old items are sold at fifty per cent off.
There’s always a feeling of excitement when you special order a birthday cake and have it decorated for the birthday boy or girl.
December 2017 - January 2018
Birthday cakes are one of the bakery’s top sellers and are popular with a number of local companies that order monthly to celebrate staff birthdays. As well, senior’s homes and churches place regular orders.
A few years ago Hemant decided to introduce a breakfast and lunch menu. He says, “This has been really popular and good for business.” The reasonably priced breakfast menu features numerous choices such as bacon, ham and egg burrito, veggie and egg

croissant, and bacon, scrambled eggs with toast or hash browns. Lunch highlights include two homemade soups daily – one vegetarian and one with meat. Customers can count on seafood soup on Wednesdays and clam chowder every Saturday. Paninis, wraps, bagels and an assortment of sandwiches round out the menu.
Steveston Bakery’s clients are extremely loyal, some drop in seven days a week. Hemant says, “Some come in two or three times a day for breakfast, lunch and afternoon coffee.” He adds, “Some customers have come since the beginning. I know a lot of them by name.” His staff is known for their friendly natures. Hemant remarks, “We’ve got to be friendly, after all, this is Steveston!” What does Hemant enjoy most about his business? He says, “It’s about people. Lots of locals have been coming here for years. I like hearing all the stories.”
The holiday season is synonymous with extra special baked goods that are eagerly anticipated as they are only seen once a year.

Two Businesses Designed to Pamper: Pure Beauty Spa and Nailz by Nancy Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
A beauty oasis is housed inside Pure Beauty Spa where two businesses designed to pamper share one space. Elena Zavelion owns Pure Beauty Spa, which opened in July 2016. Nancy Bergeron is the owner of Nailz by Nancy. She joined Elena last November when she leased a room inside the spa and set sail as a new business owner. Elena previously owned European Touch Day Spa, which was located in Garden City Mall for 13 years. When she decided to sell she opted to downsize and found the smaller space on Chatham Street. She says, “I am thrilled with both the location and the energy of Steveston village.”
Pure Beauty’s treatment room is painted a tranquil shade of light blue; seaside artwork and décor adds to the relaxing environment. 18
Originally from Ukraine, Elena moved to Canada over 20 years ago to join some of her relatives who had immigrated. She says, “I don’t miss Ukraine because all of my family is here now and that’s the most important thing.” Elena practices the European method of aesthetic skin care. She is known for her facial services. During a treatment she does a skin analysis to determine what products and treatments will best meet a client’s needs. After a 90 minute deluxe European facial your face will feel refreshed, hydrated and invigorated – the treatment includes cleansing, exfoliating, steaming, extraction, a face massage and a firming mask. Elena works exclusively with Dermalogica products, which are highly respected by skin care professionals. For a decadent Midas touch, try the 24K gold facial. Elena says, “This golden lifting and firming mask is rich in minerals and its

amazing properties will make your skin luminous and smooth.”
If you have plans to flee for the tropics and need to be swimsuit ready Pure Beauty Spa offers a full range of waxing options. December is the busiest month so book early. Other Pure Beauty Spa services include microdermabrasion, bio current face lifts, brow and lash care, permanent makeup and microblading. Many of Elena’s clients have followed the charming aesthetician from her past business due to her excellent reputation. She has seen people’s energy transform after appointments and she finds it satisfying knowing she plays a role in lifting someone’s mood. Elena says, “I enjoy working with people and it’s rewarding to see them leave feeling happy, pampered and relaxed. Taking care of oneself is so important.”
December 2017 - January 2018
Nailz by Nancy is celebrating its one-year anniversary at Pure Beauty Spa. Nancy is a dynamo who likes to try new things. Four years ago she started a parttime home-based business as a nail technician while operating her successful company Richmond Dog Walking. Eventually she decided to branch out of her home and operated a nail salon in Vancouver. She moved to Pure Beauty Spa in November 2017 and ran both businesses until February 2017 when the Chatham Street salon became so busy that she sold the dog walking company. The idea to become a certified nail technician came to Nancy when her daughter was training to become a hair stylist. She enjoyed getting manicures but couldn’t find one that met her high standards. Realizing there was a market for high calibre nail art she decided to take matters into her own hands. Nancy has always had an artistic streak; she attributes this partially to growing up in an artistic household (her father Christian Bergeron is a well respected painter).

removal method is gentle and not damaging. Customers can feel assured knowing that Nancy takes great pride in cleanliness and sanitization, as this was something she expected when she was a customer getting her nails done.
She mentions social media has been very helpful in building her client base. A clever marketer, once she made the move out of her home and connected with Elena, Nancy offered an opening special and was soon fully booked.
“I love the results and seeing how happy people are afterwards.” Nancy Bergeron Nancy works with gel polish. She points out, “Gel polish doesn’t damage nails – it’s the way some salons remove it that does.” Her
Some of the lasted trends include chrome, holo, glow in the dark, stamping and Swarovksi crystals. Nancy enjoys painting fingernails, which are like miniature canvases. Her Instagram site has many examples of the creative work she has done throughout the year. She particularly enjoys the artistic leeway clients give her around holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. Proudly displayed on the salon’s wall are numerous certificates and awards Nancy has won in nail competitions. Next up, Nancy is becoming an educator and will begin teaching in the New Year in addition to running her business. She also sells nail art supplies to certified nail technicians. If you are looking for the perfect holiday gift this season consider purchasing gift certificates to these two local businesses. The gift of pampering is always appreciated and something not all of us do often enough. The Ho Ho Ho House: A Seasonal Labour of Family Love Story by Sarah Gordon
It all began on the rooftop of a bungalow on Garry Street with a family of snowmen, Santa’s reindeer along with the jolly old elf, and a father and son team who felt inspired to decorate for the holidays. Nine years later in 1993 the little bungalow that started it all was demolished to make way for Dianne and Gerry Woodman’s new home. The larger rooftop invited the opportunity for expansion and so it grew with the purchase of another person’s display.
The Woodman’s home is known as the Ho Ho Ho House in honour of the illuminated words Ho Ho Ho on the garage roof. Santa Claus is positioned fittingly next to the chimney, and a star is placed on the peak

of the house. Over 100,000 bright lights and more than 35 displays and decorations are a beacon of Christmas cheer. Photo opportunities abound. There are interactive displays such as a sleigh and Santa’s chair to sit in, a dancing Santa who is always looking for partners and two wooden cut out snowmen that stand side by side (lovingly made by hand) to pop faces through. Gerry enjoys adding to the collection annually. Dianne says, “This year we are excited to add Merry Christmas spelled out in three-foot high light up letters.” It’s a Woodman family tradition but it’s become much more than that; it is a seasonal community highlight and it’s also a destination for people from across Metro Vancouver who travel out to see the house dressed up in it’s festive finery. As well, the Steveston Community Centre’s winter hayrides make a point of passing by each year.

Dianne and Gerry’s son Jamie is an integral part of the installation team. He is nicknamed the “number one elf” and is carrying on the tradition started by his father and grandfather 30 years ago. Jaime recruits friends to assist him with the set up, which takes close to one month. Dianne and Gerry’s daughter Jennifer has never known anything different. Her childhood Christmases were enriched by the winter wonderland in their yard and by seeing nightly visitors collect on their lawn.
“It’s a labour of family love. It’s one of the brightest parts of the year.” Jennifer Woodman
“People look forward to it. It brings a lot of joy.” Dianne Woodman While not everyone clicks their heels together when snowflakes fall from the sky Jennifer says, “The snow really added to the atmosphere last year.” Charitable donations are welcomed and all proceeds benefit Wigs for Kids B.C. for children who have lost their hair due to cancer or other serious illnesses. Steveston Insider thanks the Woodman family for creating this love-filled tradition, which has injected Christmas spirit into countless people’s lives over the last 30 years!
Most rewarding for the family is the joy they bring others during the holiday season. They find letters and cards in their mailbox thanking them and little children in particular are enchanted by the magic.
The Ho Ho Ho House is located at 4280 Garry Street at the corner of Fentiman Place. Visiting hours are between 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. nightly and all day December 25.

If Santa was a Hot Rodder Story by Doug Harder
Art by Andrew Kerr
If Santa was a hot rodder, he might cruise the streets of Steveston in a torch red ’32 Ford Roadster, just like the one seen in his fabulous illustration by automotive artist Andrew Kerr. Richmond resident Steve Kovacs enjoys cruising through Steveston village in his red hot rod that looks a lot like Santa’s!
running gear is a GM crate 350 cu. in. engine with a 350 turbo automatic transmission and a 9 inch Ford rear end, with a 3.73 gear ratio. The custom steering column is an Ididit product. Pirelli tires are wrapped around Billit wheels front and rear. The car is painted in GM Torch Red colour.
Steve is entered in Steveston’s annual Christmas Classic and Custom Car Cruise on Sunday December 3 between 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. The Steveston Merchants Association organizes the Christmas Classic and Custom Car Cruise and the display of cars which follows the car parade.
The car’s farthest trip was to Scottsdale Arizona in 2013, but generally can be seen at car shows in the Metro Vancouver area. Steve usually attends the weekly Thursday night gathering of car enthusiasts at McDonalds on Russ Baker Way by the Vancouver Airport.
All toys and funds donated on December 3 will be given to the Richmond Christmas Fund. In fact, their staff will be on hand to say a few words when they accept the donations. They in turn will distribute the items to those families most in need of help at Christmas. Steve’s hot rod was built in Langley. He purchased it at the Vancouver Collector Car Show and Auction in 2013. The car is a Brookville all steel 1932 Ford body. The

He is a member of the BC Hot Rod Association and the Richmond Street Rodder group. Steve drove a friend’s Mercury Cyclone last year in the Cruise for Children, but is bringing his own car in 2017. Like Steve’s red rodster, every car has a story behind it. Watch the cars cruise by and afterwards come meet the owners and hear their stories. Cruise down to Steveston with the family on December 3, bring a toy or donation along and join the fun!

Steveston Santa Claus Parade Starting at 6 pm from Regent Street at Sixth Avenue
The parade began in 1973 by a handful of local families who volunteered their time, with the late Frank Van Hest (of Art Knapp's) as Santa. Currently most of the costumes are being made by local resident Cindy Partridge. The parade Chair is Jack Beetstra, and is sponsored by the Richmond Firefighters Charitable Society.
