Insider Publisher's Note The dog days of summer have arrived but summertime fun is far from over, in fact it’s just getting started! All Aboard Steveston Tram, London Family Farm Day, Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, Steveston Beer Fest, Steveston Grand Prix of Art and Culture Days are all on the horizon. If it’s fresh local produce or unique arts and crafts you are after look no further than the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market, which continues through mid-October. A refreshing dip in an outdoor pool is another summertime ritual that can’t be beat. You have until Labour Day to head to Steveston Outdoor Pool before it winds down for the season. You may recognize Linda Barnes on the cover; she is a retired politician and a tireless volunteer who sits on a variety of local boards and committees to benefit Steveston, which she has called home for 48 years. We are excited to welcome Sanctuary Café to Steveston. While this family owned coffee shop has a cycling theme, owner Tim Lee points out it is open to one and all. Customers are thrilled to have a new neighbourhood sanctuary where they can enjoy coffee and baked goods.

Read about the new ice cream destination on the boardwalk called Cacao 70 Dip Shop. Yes, it is all about decadent chocolate, ice cream, Belgian waffles, whipped cream and waffle cones. Plenty of changes are taking place in the village. G-Men Ramen is opening in the former New Well Tavern space, Win Win Chick-N opened on First Avenue, Serenity Home Décor closed and La Vacance has opened. Goegan Spa has closed after 10 years in business, as the owner is moving east. Steveston Marine & Hardware is closing the Steveston location. With Our Own Two Hands opened a second location on Chatham Street. Enjoy the great outdoors, from barbecues to picnics, flying kites, outdoor patios, and walks along the Fraser River. Before we know it September routines will be slipping back into place – but for now, relax and enjoy continued fun in the Steveston sun!

Linda Barnes:
Invested in Our Community Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
Many Richmond residents recognize the name Linda Barnes; she is a woman who has worn and continues to wear many hats in our community. She is a retired politician and a tireless volunteer who sits on a variety of local boards and committees to benefit Steveston, which she has called home for 48 years. Perhaps best known as a former Richmond city councillor, Linda was elected five times from 1999 to 2014 when she retired. How did she go from being an Education Assistant and Youth Worker to holding a seat on city council? Linda became an active CUPE union member while she was an E.A. in the 1970s. This eventually led to becoming CUPE President and it was during her time with the union that people encouraged her to get involved in civic politics.
Linda says, “I was always curious about politics. When I was young I enjoyed big debates and discussions with my father.” Linda and her husband Brian moved from Vancouver to Steveston in 1970 as housing prices were much more affordable here. It was a different place when the canneries were in operation and she shares stories of the smells that permeated the air. Nonetheless, she embraced her new community. They raised their two kids and Linda continued working with children with special needs for 26 years. In 1996 she threw her hat into the ring and ran for city council. She came close and was elected when she ran again in 1999. There were numerous highlights during her time as a city councillor, such as the affordable housing strategy. Linda says, “It was the first one and it was a great beginning.” Another accomplishment was creating the dyke
8
reserve – this initiative allocates a portion of tax dollars towards a reserve to maintain and increase our dyke system. Linda mentions the 2010 Winter Olympics were another source of pride. She says, “It really put Richmond on the map. It was an exciting time and we are still seeing the benefits.”
She enjoys having accomplished lasting legacies. “The work is never done. There is always more to do,” Linda adds. While on council she fought for a number of initiatives to invigorate community participation in the village, including the Tall Ships Festival, Britannia Heritage Shipyard, the Maritime Festival as well as the Steveston Tram restoration.
When Linda retired from politics in 2014 she did not pause, she began to offer her many talents to a number of local non-profit organizations. Linda enjoys travelling, cycling, walking and spending time with her children and grandchildren; she ensures the assorted boards and committees she belongs to know that her retirement comes first. Linda has been President of the Steveston Historical Society for four years and is currently in her final year. The Society has introduced some new programming to attract more people to Steveston to shine the spotlight on the village’s rich cultural heritage. Last December was the inaugural year for Songs in the Snow: A Vintage Christmas. For the first three Saturdays in December, the community came to celebrate and join in the singing of favourite holiday songs performed by local community and school groups. In the spirit of community and giving, Songs in the Snow supported the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary Thrift Shop building restoration and Ignite the Warmth, which provides blankets to the homeless. Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes have proven to be extremely popular and returned to the village again this summer. Led by a narrator through the streets of Steveston, five historical plays were performed by talented actors from Hugh McRoberts Secondary. Linda mentions the performances received glowing reviews and often sold out. She has words of praise for Andrew Wade who wrote the scripts, the talented students who committed two months of their time to take on the project and Sarah Glen, Executive Director of the Steveston Historical Society who brought it all together.
After spending 48 years in this community how does Linda feel today? She reports with a warm laugh, “It would be almost impossible to leave. Our friends and their children all grew up together.” She adds, “Although the canneries are gone, fishing remains viable and it is still a working town. We can’t lose that, it is the attraction to Steveston: buying fish off the dock and seeing fish being unloaded from the boats. That is what makes Steveston different – the fishing industry and the small shops.” She concludes with a smile, “I am interested in the future of what happens to Steveston. Living in this community is like living in a small town. People know each other. Sometimes we squabble, but that’s because we care about the people and the village we live in.”

Sanctuary Café:
Coffee. Cycling. Culture. Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier
Coffee lovers are clinking their mugs together in celebration of London Landing’s new and much-needed coffee shop.
His vision was to get people out of their cars and have them walk, run or cycle to Sanctuary Café for great coffee, food and conversation.
Tim Lee is the owner of Sanctuary Café. Born and raised in Richmond, he has lived in Steveston for 16 years. His diverse career history includes working in human resources and healthcare. While Tim enjoyed his jobs he says, “I realized there had to be something more.”
While travelling in Europe with his wife Erin and their son Jamieson, they discovered a completely different coffee culture from North America’s hurried paper cup ‘grab a coffee and go’ culture. In Italy they met a gentleman who pointed out if you don’t have time to sit down and enjoy coffee in a mug then don’t have it. They thoroughly agree.
Last year an idea began to percolate; Tim dreamt up a way to combine his passion for cycling with his love of coffee.
16
Sanctuary Café’s philosophy is written on the wall: “Go fast enough to get there, but slow enough to see.” Tim believes these words can be applied to both cycling and coffee culture. He encourages people to spend time winding down with friends. Jamieson agrees and
adds, “I hope Sanctuary Café plays a part in helping people live in the moment."
Sanctuary Café opened in mid-May and has received a warm welcome in this growing pocket of Steveston. Choosing a location came easily. As a cyclist Tim knows it can be complicated to stop for coffee in Steveston village on busy weekends. He was aware London Landing was underserved and he wanted to situate Sanctuary Café on this well-travelled cycling route at the south end of No. 2 Road which groups pass en route to Finn Slough and Rice Mill Road. As an additional perk, Sanctuary Café offers weekly running groups and group rides to bring out the community. The run collective meets Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. Ride collectives meet every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. from May through September (weather permitting). All runs and rides start and finish from Sanctuary Café. Tim and Jamieson regularly work together at the shop along with a few part-time staff. They are hard at work expanding the menu, brewing coffee and serving baked goods.
They are enjoying seeing the business in operation. It’s a family affair, as Erin lends her social media talents and they enjoy bouncing ideas off each another. The first thing you will notice when you enter Sanctuary Café is a rustic space steeped in character. Plenty of thought went into the shop’s interior, from the faux brick wall (this was a must for Tim), and two other walls constructed from a mixture of reclaimed and new wood. Tim says, “The mix of old and new with a hodge-podge of colours tells a story.” A centrepiece of the café is a custom-made 10-foot table and benches constructed from a demolished 100-year-old Abbotsford barn. As well, Tim and Jamieson went on a day trip to Bellingham to purchase two 125-year-old church pews, which add to the ambience. Tim successfully tried his hand at designing and constructing the chandelier hanging over the large table. He laughs and points out he salvaged Jamieson’s bike wheels for the project. Another element that makes this café stand out is the bike hooks on the walls. Tim and Jamieson are aware that many cyclists are hesitant to park their bikes out of their sight
17
line while they have a coffee. Have no fear, you can bring your bike inside (there’s room for eight) and on weekends a temporary outdoor rack accommodates another 20 bikes.
Jamieson says, “When a group of cyclists arrives it adds to the aesthetic seeing the bikes parked outside.” While the café has a cycling theme, Tim points out the neighbourhood coffee shop is open to one and all. If you love coffee, baked goods and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy both, this may become your favourite haunt. The word is out that Sanctuary Café carries Elmo’s Baking Co.’s double-baked croissants. These buttery pastries have a following and sell out quickly – you have to be there at the right time to nab one! Tim reports one customer caught wind that they carry them and travelled from UBC to make a purchase. Sausage rolls, muffins, cookies, carrot cake, coconut Nanaimo bars, sweet and savoury scones (lemon fig, raspberry glaze or savoury cheddar onion with chipotle) are also sold. Based on customers’ requests, they are considering expanding the menu to include lunch options.
18
They also intend to rotate their featured local coffee roasters at regular intervals to expose customers to different beans and flavours. The father and son team are enjoying this new venture. Jamieson says, “It’s a fun experience working alongside my dad. We’re on the same page.” Tim concludes, “It’s rewarding to get to this point after all the planning that’s gone into it. It’s kind of like a dream come true.” To let you in on a secret, if you travel by car there is customer parking on the south side of the café. Don’t let the construction on No. 2 Road put you off, there’s a sanctuary with coffee waiting for you! Cacao 70 Dip Shop: A State of Chocolate Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier & submitted
Chocolate, ice cream, Belgian waffle lovers, lend me your ears! Have you heard there is a new ice cream shop, or more precisely, a dip shop in Steveston?
This is a crème de la crème, ‘only the best chocolate for me’ experience.
Cacao 70 is a Montreal based company that was founded in 2014 and is rapidly expanding across Canada (there are 27 locations to date). Cacao 70 initially began as a chocolate drinking bar and evolved into three store concepts that showcase chocolate in fun and surprising ways.
The Cacao 70 umbrella includes The Dip Shop where cones are glammed up with delicious artisanal dips. The other enterprises are Cacao 70 Eatery locations where brunch, lunch and sweets are served with chocolate as the star ingredient, and Cacao 70 Sweet House, which offers chocolate drinks, desserts and an all day brunch items.
28
Montreal is home to The Cacao 70 Factory and this is where the chocolatey magic begins; chocolate bars, hot cocoa powder, drinking chocolate and canned dips are all produced for retail in the concept shops. Xiang Zhang is the franchise owner of Steveston’s Cacao 70 Dip Shop. He is very knowledgeable about Cacao 70; in fact he relocated from Ottawa (where he worked at Cacao 70 Eatery) to open Steveston’s Dip Shop, which opened in March 2018. He came here sight unseen and was impressed by the stellar location the company chose for the shop. He says, “I really love this place. It is so beautiful.”
Owning a Cacao 70 Dip Shop is Xiang’s ideal job. From a young age he recalls how much he loved to make desserts and dreamt of running his own ice cream shop. Customers remark on the beautiful bright shop which features white cabinetry, tropical wallpaper and a pretty green mosaic tiled floor. They also comment on the smell of chocolate and waffles cooking. Xiang says, “People get excited when they see the dips.” The clientele is diverse, from young people to seniors and families. People enjoy strolling
by after a meal at a restaurant, or discovering the new business by chance. Others head to The Dip Shop as a destination as they are familiar with the franchise. What can you expect at the Cacao 70 Dip Shop? Soft-serve vanilla ice cream is dipped into the chocolate dip of your choice and the decision isn’t an easy one as there are 11 to choose from. The options include Dark, Milk, White, Praline, Maple, Matcha, Peanut Butter, Earl Grey, Chai, Black Sesame and Coffee. There are several ways to approach a visit to The Dip Shop. You can order a dipped cone or another delicious option is to select a Belgian waffle (made on site) and have it either plain or dipped in chocolate.
The ultimate dessert is the Classic Combo, which is described as “waffles with a wow factor.” 29
These incredible creations are a dessert extravaganza. There are six selections to choose from and they are the full meal deal. You can enjoy a waffle, ice cream and a cone all in one decadent dish. The Catcha Matcha is a top seller. Starting with a housemade waffle as the base, it is topped with a mini scoop of soft serve vanilla ice cream and dipped with Matcha chocolate, whipped cream, strawberries, coconut chips, and classic cheesecake.
Xiang mentions that Cacao 70 recently entered its first International Chocolate Awards competition and three of the company’s chocolate bars were awarded medals. The chai bar won gold; Earl Grey and the Jack Bean bar (coffee chocolate) took home silver medals. Year round this will be a dessert destination, but in the winter months (yes, sadly, they will arrive!) The Dip Shop will also be a great spot to warm up with a hot drink made from premium cocoa powder and rich chocolate shavings. Working non-stop and loving it, Xiang finds his new life and new job in Steveston extremely rewarding. At this point he hasn’t been able to take days off but he is too excited to complain, after all this is what he has been waiting for virtually his entire life. New programs include Flexible Preschool & Toddler Time, Kindergarten Ready, and Flexible Flexible Childcare & Activity Centre Childcare. ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER How much money do I need to retire? The answer is going to be different for everyone, depending on what your goals and priorities are at retirement. Once you have an idea of the retirement lifestyle you want, we would take a look at what sources of retirement income you will have, such as pensions, investments, proceeds from downsizing your home, etc. This determines what your retirement paycheque would look like, while factoring in tax, inflation and the rate of return on your investments. I would also suggest reviewing your cash flow to see where you have the opportunity to enhance your current savings plans. Getting started today on your retirement plan is the best way to ensure you have the money you need to live out the retirement lifestyle you want.
