Publisher’s Note 2012 is underway and businesses are catching up from their holiday year-end rush, and planning how to make this year even better. As I write this, we are having our first snowfall of the season. February’s events include Valentine’s Day, Eating Together week, Family Day and Pink Shirt Day. March brings Daylight Saving Time, spring break, family vacations, St Patrick’s Day (which is best celebrated at O’Hare’s GastroPub) and Earth Hour. On this month’s cover, photographer Sandra Steier captured Steveston’s own Grace Campbell shopping along No. 1 Road. Read more about Grace on page 6. Writer Sarah Gordon gives us an inside look at Vince Morlet, owner of the award-winning Tapenade Bistro, and introduces us to the coolest new business owner in the village, Ryan Halter, and his assistant Jesse Strong, of Steveston Tattoo Company.
Our sports feature is about a 12-year-old girl named Sydney who plays a multitude of sports, including field hockey. A reminder that it is time to register for spring and summer sports. The Steveston Merchants Association is busy planning the budget for the new fiscal year, welcoming new businesses and organizing the annual Easter Egg Hunt. There is still plenty of filming happening in the village and we are thrilled to have the crew of the hit show Once Upon A Time here in “Storybrooke”! I encourage you to refer to the Steveston Insider directory and shop locally for Valentine’s Day. The village has sweets, greeting cards, jewellery, flowers, lingerie, spas, gifts, wine, and great dining. Show the love!

Cover Story: Grace Campbell written by Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier
In the spring of 2010 Campbell was invited to join Sean Lawson’s team at Steveston Real Estate. She trained as a receptionist at the No 1 Road office, and quickly assumed the position of office manager in December 2010. Working at Steveston Real Estate is the most exciting opportunity that she has been presented with and Campbell loves her job. She is dedicated to their clients, and feels fortunate to have gained eight new friendships with her hard working colleagues. Grace Campbell’s face is recognizable to many Stevestonites. She is strikingly beautiful and has an exuberant personality to match. As this month’s Steveston Insider cover model she is partaking in two of her favourite Steveston activities, shopping and drinking coffee. Like the John Mellencamp song, Campbell was born and raised in a small town (Steveston) and intends to spend her days here. Who could blame her? Campbell attended McRoberts Secondary, and was in French Immersion from Kindergarten through Grade 12. As a lifetime Stevestonite, she feels very fortunate to be living and working in this special area of Richmond. A highlight of her day is running into people she knows while strolling through the village. Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant customers enjoyed stellar service from Campbell where she worked from its opening day for two years. She is grateful for the wealth of product knowledge that she garnered from owner Jim Van der Tas. She had the opportunity to manage the floor for a year, and received Tourism Richmond's Extra Mile Service Award, and forged some fabulous relationships with locals and visitors alike. 6
Steveston Insider Magazine •
Last year Campbell applied to UBC's Sauder School of Business. She was accepted into the Real Estate Division and has begun the first steps toward her Diploma in Urban Land Economics which can be divided into real estate development, appraisal, management or sales, and prepares individuals to be involved in numerous facets of real estate. She is currently in her second of twelve semesters and finds it fascinating. Campbell’s favourite Steveston dining hangouts are Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant and Gudrun, and she enjoys shopping at many Steveston businesses during her lunch hour. She likes wandering around the Britannia Shipyard area; however she has very little free time these days between working full-time and attending school. Although Steveston has many fans, it is fair to say that Campbell is one of the most enthusiastic Stevestonites around. There was a time, not too long ago, when young people wanted to make the break to the city after finishing high school. It is refreshing to see that today Steveston is a place where many people, like Campbell, want to stay, and can forge extremely successful careers… in a small town! My Bubby
by Sarah Gordon
“Black and white kittens to good home. $10” This tiny newspaper ad caught my eye when I was searching for a kitten after having tragically lost my young orange cat to an accident. Although I wasn’t entirely sure the time was right, my brother and sisterin-law convinced me that it might help to have a new life fill the void. I also took into consideration the well being of my other cat, Ella, who I thought might be lonely without her companion, Sam (cleverly named by my witty mum who thought Sam n’ Ella would be a perfect combo), so I decided to follow their advice. After a brief telephone interview with the kittens’ owners, who established that I had the makings of a good pet owner, I set off to check out a male kitten. When I arrived there were only two kittens left, and the one who captured my heart had tiny chewed off whiskers, courtesy of his siblings. He also had a dear little face with unique markings, and a stubby tail which would always be a source of conversation when people met him. When the owners told me that he was their granddaughter’s favourite, I happily handed over my $10, knowing that children have their radar set for the pick of the litter. This kitten became my dear companion. I named him Zachary, but I quickly gave him the nickname Bubby which stuck. Bubby was a tiny fellow, just old enough to leave his mother, so on his first night in his new home I nestled him on a cushioned chair beside my bed, only to discover that in the night he had climbed up to lay on my pillow. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. We slept side by side for sixteen years. 8
Those who knew Bubby understood that he was at the top of the totem pole in our house. My family joked that they always fell below Bubby in the pecking order. Going away for a holiday for more than a week was next to impossible, not because Bubby wasn’t being cared for with TLC by friends, but because I could not stand being away from him for any length of time. Bubby was a dog-like cat, with undying loyalty to me. He was a burrowing cat, and could often be found deep under blankets. He loved to fetch, and Q-Tips were his personal favourite, as they fit perfectly in his mouth, like a cat sized bone. He was a gentle soul with a social nature. He loved visitors and would often come to the door to greet people. He thrived on routine, and was a reliable clock; he would come to find me at the same time each night to remind me that it was time for us to head off to bed. Many of my Steveston Insider articles were written with the assistance of Bubby perched on my desk, sitting inconveniently in front of my keyboard, where I would contort myself to dodge his body. And yes, I loved every minute of it. I am writing this article without Bubby by my side. In late November a sudden illness took Bubby away and left behind a hole in my heart. I know that in time a new life will enter our house, and bring us joy, but not yet, perhaps in the spring which is a natural time of rebirth, but for now no cat can take his place. Throughout Bubby’s life I often proclaimed that buying him was the best $10 I ever spent. The memories that he left us with are priceless.

Steveston Tattoo Company written by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Steveston Tattoo Company promises the brightest colours for their works of art. The shop itself is a vibrant and eclectic masterpiece with its warm mustard coloured walls, dark gray wainscoting, an ornate chandelier, a mounted deer head wearing a crown, Balinese masks, antique cabinetry, not to mention an array of wall art. It is easy to imagine shrinking the richness and warmth of the décor down to the size of a tattoo. Steveston Tattoo Company is the new kid in town; having opened for business in December. Owner, Ryan Halter, aka “Mr. Halter”, and his right-hand man, Jesse Strong, met four years ago when Halter tattooed Strong. They are pleased by the warm reception they have received as people stroll into the shop and welcome them to the village. Halter was aware that Steveston was lacking a tattoo shop, and decided to establish his business in this safe and friendly community. He notes that the lack of security bars on Steveston business windows is a refreshing change. Halter, who is originally from Kindersley, 10
Steveston Insider Magazine •
Saskatchewan, has lived in B.C. for nine years. He has always had a love of art and drawing. Prior to being a tattoo artist he was involved in construction and painting. In 1997 he apprenticed at a tattoo shop in Lethbridge, Alberta. Before opening Steveston Tattoo Company, he worked at Dutchman Tattoos in Burnaby for eight years and tips his hat to mentor, John “the Dutchman”, a well respected tattoo artist. Strong has been a tattoo enthusiast for as long as he can remember. On his twentieth birth he began an apprenticeship which he finished with Vinnie Ruocco at New World Tattoo in Surrey, an opportunity for which he is grateful. Getting your first tattoo is a big deal. There are many decisions involved including selecting the artwork, where you will position it, and of course, the long term commitment to place “permanent jewellery” on your skin. Celebrities have made getting inked extremely fashionable, and have helped take away the stigma of tattoos. Although the possibility of removal exists, (remember Angelina Jolie’s long gone “Billy Bob”?), Feb-Mar 2012 • www.StevestonInsider.com
Steveston Tattoo Company recommends researching your tattoo artwork well, and staying open minded when you choose to proceed. Halter and Strong take great pride in their artistry. They will work with you and take into consideration the magnitude of the image, and consider the longevity of the tattoo choice. In the City of Richmond you must be age eighteen to get a tattoo, and Steveston Tattoo Company will not tattoo anyone younger. Although we shared a joke about the stereotypical drunken sailor who staggers into the tattoo shop, Steveston Tattoo Company will not tattoo anyone under the influence. The shop is as clean as a whistle. They use disposable gloves, single use needles, and the use of autoclave equipment for sterilization. They follow all of the hygienic procedures required by Coastal Health to run a professional and reputable shop. Halter and Strong are a very warm and entertaining team, and their goal is to make you feel comfortable, whether it is your first, or one of many tattoos. Their diverse clientele ranges from long term customers who are building their collection, who Halter describes as an interesting and fun crowd, to housewives and lawyers. They have tattooed all walks of life; to date their oldest client was a 72-year-old grandmother.
and is a devoted father and husband. He has three children, ages one, ten and sixteen. He and his family hope to move to the Steveston area soon as the commute from his home is proving to be time consuming. His family enjoys visiting the village and the proximity to the water appeals to him. Both Halter and Strong like the feel of small town Steveston, which is what attracts so many of us here. Philanthropy is extremely important to Steveston Tattoo Company. In December they donated $20 from every tattoo towards Vancouver’s Covenant House. This year they intend to continue giving back to the community. Welcome to the village, Steveston Tattoo Company, and thank you for injecting some extra colour into our lives! www.stevestontattooco.com 110-12020 First Avenue 604-284-5030

She Shoots, She Scores written by Sarah Gordon
photo submitted
Sydney is an extremely active grade seven student who is a fitness role model for girls. While many of her sports are seasonal, in a calendar year she is involved in ice hockey (Richmond Ravens), field hockey (Richmond Girls Field Hockey Association), soccer, Air Attack volleyball, school basketball and track and field. Previously she also had softball, hip hop dance and gymnastics in her activity mix. Sydney recommends that girls get involved in sports as it is fun to be part of a team and provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our community offers a terrific selection of sports and it is easy to find something appealing. House teams can be a fun entry point. You don't have to start when you are young, and you don't have to be good at your chosen sport before you start. The coaches will instruct you and help make you successful. For example, it was only last year that Sydney started playing ice hockey, and until that time she had only a little skating experience. If you are looking for a spring activity, Sydney recommends the Richmond Girls Field Hockey (RGFH) season which is starting in April and runs through June. Registration for new members takes place on February 8th with details available on their website. Finding a balance between school and sport is important, and making sure that she achieves 12
strong marks is important to Sydney and her parents. Knowing when to let things go is also part of the balancing act. She has had to drop some of her sports to accommodate her schoolwork, and has faced choosing between activities as she can’t fit them all into her busy schedule. Ice hockey is currently Sydney’s favourite sport. She loves the feeling of gliding along the ice and trying out different shots on goal. An observation from Sydney: people think hockey is cold, but it really is not, soccer is much colder! In her down time, Sydney likes to spend with her friends and take her dog for walks. She likes reading, and occasionally watches television; however she prefers to play outside with her friends. In September Sydney will be going to high school and feels confident that she will know many kids thanks to her athletic involvement in the community. She intends to try out for volleyball, field hockey and soccer, however, she anticipates fiercer competition lies ahead as high school teams span a wider age range. It seems very likely that Sydney will achieve anything that she desires. She is an inspiration for girls everywhere to get active, even if you only introduce one sport into your life.

Tapenade Bistro
written by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Tapenade Bistro celebrated its ninth anniversary in January, a milestone indeed in the ever changing world of restaurants. Tapenade Bistro has achieved what so many restaurants strive to be recognized for; their award-winning food, excellent wines and outstanding service.
restaurant management in Vancouver, Brazil and France. In that time he also earned a degree in Political Science and a Diploma in Hospitality. He changed career paths briefly when he went into recruiting and head hunting, but returned in 2002 as a restaurateur and Tapenade Bistro was born.
In the early days, owner Vince Morlet had a vision that his restaurant would be an urban style bistro. Over time he realized that honouring what they do best is key, to be a neighbourhood bistro in the heart of Steveston village featuring French and Mediterranean inspired West Coast fare. Their "simple, yet elegant" cuisine showcases the natural beauty of local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients in an appropriate and sumptuous manner. Morlet’s charm and warmth is inextricably linked to the ambience of Tapenade Bistro as he circulates the restaurant floor to welcome his customers.
Morlet’s paternal grandfather ran a café/ delicatessen in Paris’s 20th arrondissement. Although Morlet never met his grandfather, he grew up seeing the enchanting black and white photographs of his grandfather’s Parisian establishment.
Morlet was born in Los Angeles. His parents, originally from France, moved their family to Steveston when Morlet was fourteen-yearsold. After graduating from Steveston High, he began his career in the food industry as a waiter in a Richmond restaurant, and subsequently worked his way into hotel and 18

evolving, subject to availability of seafood) and Black Olive Tapenade (which is absolutely delicious). Other popular items which appear year round include Beef Short Rib, Beet Salad and Linguine Boscaiola. Keeping the menu both seasonal and local is of utmost importance; therefore you will see a large portion of the menu change according to availability. Recently appointed as Head Chef, Justin Cheung, will introduce his first menu in April. As part of their commitment to sustainability, Tapenade Bistro supports local suppliers, and local farms including Terra Nova Farm. They also take part in Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program which works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to assist them in making ocean-friendly buying decisions. Each winter Tapenade Bistro partners with local wineries to present their Winemakers Dinner Series. These special evenings pair six wines with six courses, and shine the spotlight on reputed B.C. winemakers who are present to discuss their wines. Next up is Poplar Grove on April 4th and La Frenz on April 25th, both from the Naramata Bench. These dinners always sell out, so be sure to book quickly. Tapenade Bistro has many long term staff who Morlet refers to as the “Tapenade family”. Like so many business owners, Morlet spends many long days behind the scenes as he takes care of administrative work, meeting with vendors, promoting and marketing the restaurant, and he is on the restaurant floor during dining hours. Morlet and his wife Juliana, who is a business analyst, have two sons, ages two and seven. On his time off, Morlet enjoys checking out Vancouver’s restaurant scene. Having spent 27 years of his life in Steveston he feels akin to the fishing village and believes the greatest things about Steveston are its size, the people, and the village’s unique position in the Lower Mainland.
YVR’s Golf for Kids annual fundraiser which assists children’s charities including Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. As snowflakes are gently falling outside my window, I can think of no finer place to be than in a warm Mediterranean environment eating a bowl of Bouillabaisse. Tapenade Bistro is yet another reason to not have to leave Steveston; it’s all here, well maybe not the Mediterranean heat, quite yet! www.tapenade.ca 3711 Bayview Street 604-275-5188
As Vice-President of the Steveston Merchants Association’s Board of Directors, and one of its founding members, he is an active community liaison. Morlet is also on the Executive Committee of Tourism Richmond’s Board of Directors. Tapenade Bistro is a supporter of Steveston Insider Magazine •

NEW BOOK!
The Sockeye Special: The Story of the Steveston Tram and early Lulu Island written by Ron Hyde
The book relates how the tram was an integral part of transportation from the farmlands of Lulu Island getting into Vancouver. The tram brought thousands of passengers from Vancouver, New Westminster and Steveston to the Minoru Racetrack where, in addition to exciting horse races, six aeronautical firsts took place at the track between 1910 and 1914. Stories of the Steveston Opera House, the opening of the fishing season, the Richmond dairy industry who shipped their milk to Vancouver on the tram and had their milk cans returned at the end of the day filled with spring waster as Richmond could not have wells. A fascinating look at the BC Electric’s partnership with the people, the canneries, industry, entertainment and life on Lulu Island. The book contains eighty-two historic photographs and images. The Sockeye Special sells for $15 (plus $5 if the order is to be mailed). In Richmond, the book is available at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Gift Shop, London Heritage Farm Gift Shop, Steveston Book Store, Black Bond Books in Lansdowne and Ladner Shopping Centres.
