THE MAPLE RESIDENCES: Independent Living with Built-in Friends
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier and Carolynne PallaWhile some debate leaving their homes to move to a seniors’ residence, those choosing The Maple Residences discover how much they gain. Many residents post their first names on their suite doors; this is just one of the many signs of connection in this close-knit community.
The attractive five-storey building contains 144-unit residences. It is situated on the former site of the historic Japanese Fishermen’s Hospital, which was the first hospital to be built in Richmond in 1900.
Assistant Manager Eileen Campbell has
worked at The Maple Residences since it opened in 2012. She says, “A few residents were born in the Fishermen’s Hospital and have come full circle.”
Each suite includes a balcony; some face Steveston Park, while others offer mountain, Fraser River, and Vancouver Island vistas.
The location couldn’t be more desirable; the Maples is conveniently close to the library, community centre, shops, and a short walk or scooter ride to the boardwalk.
“The Maples is a mini world within our great big world,” says Eileen. There is so much rich knowledge and experience within the complex. For example, Elizabeth is a World War II veteran who was a member of the British air force.
Eileen remarks, “She is an inspiration. As a woman in her 60s, she still flew a plane, joined a sailing club, and learned to sail through our beautiful B.C. waters. She is learning to play the guitar; her zest for life is front and centre daily.”
She adds, “Johnny was a performer on Don Messer's Jubilee and has entertained many of us with his accordion, songs, stories, and jokes. Steve speaks four languages and plays
the piano by ear. We all enjoy his music to start our day. Ken was a Grenadier Guard for her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
Two years ago, Charlotte and Bill moved to the Maples from Grand Forks to be closer to their daughter. They have formed new friendships and enjoy meeting up for weekly happy hours even though they don’t drink. Charlotte says, “We like to socialize with our friends.” Eileen adds, “Every hour is a happy hour here.”
Bill enjoys being in the heart of Steveston village, where he can travel on his scooter, while Charlotte attends daily exercise classes.
Gayle shares, “Our house was too big and high maintenance. We dropped into the Maples a few years before, had a tour, sold the house, and moved in. It is great to have our kids nearby. We've made lots of new friends and enjoy their company.”
Brian and Karen are newcomers to the Maples; they moved in last year. They mention, “Location was most important and the price, of course. There are no stairs and no cooking. It's very relaxing! We love the bus trips to different places. Our lifestyle hasn't changed that much. We have more interaction with people, and we enjoy that. It is a friendly community, and it has opened up our lives.”
Irene was among the first residents to move into the Maples in 2012. After experiencing a health issue, she realized she could no longer maintain her home or garden. She took the advice of a trusted professional to scout out local independent living seniors’ residences. She knew she had found her new home when she discovered the Maples complex.
She says, “I cannot believe I've been here 11 years. I met Len the first day I moved in, and our partnership lasted seven years. We had a busy time. We shared a love of gardening and dancing, Friday evenings at the ANAF pub and bus trips. We went on two cruises and participated in recreation programs, family dinners and five Salmon Festival parades on our scooters. Sadly, Len left us five years ago, so I will leave the Salmon Festival for our newer generation of residents.”
Irene loves to garden, and her raised flowerbeds in the courtyard garden are admired by many. Other residents with green thumbs also enjoy contributing to the communal garden.
The Maple Residences opened in 2012 and is full, with a one-year waiting list.
Each month offers a variety of entertainment and recreation programming. The choice is up to the residents; they can elect to participate as much or as little as they like.
The facility features a fitness room, hair salon, craft room, library, pool table, and many quiet spaces to sit on each floor. Fitness classes are offered seven days a week with a qualified instructor.
“If someone were contemplating moving to the Maples, I’d say, good choice,” says Charlotte.
Families can visit whenever they like and are welcome to join for meals. The guest suite is a wonderful bonus for visitors.
The COVID-19 pandemic was a very challenging time for the residents and the staff. Eileen credits their collective resiliency for making it through; they followed the rules and kept everyone safe. Remarkably, there were no cases of COVID at the residence. The most difficult part was restricting family visits as well as internal gatherings.
The Steveston Salmon Festival resumes this summer, complete with the parade, and it feels like a return to normalcy. It is a happy occasion for the participants who will ride their scooters in a choreographed routine.
Many residents remark that the staff are the best part of The Maple Residences.
“To say that I am proud to be part of the management team at the Maples is an understatement. What
has been created here is unique. It's warm and friendly as you would expect, but the vibrancy of the residents is what stands out for me,” Eileen says.

STEVESTON SALMON FESTIVAL: Celebrating the Return of Steveston's Favourite Event
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra SteierAfter a reimagined festival last year, and two years of virtual festivals in 2020 and 2021, the Steveston Salmon Festival’s organizing committee is thrilled to announce that the community’s much-loved Canada Day celebration is back.
The festival began over 76 years ago to raise funds for the community centre to build a
new playground. Originally conceived as the Salmon Queen Carnival for the 1946 July 1st Sports Day, it was an opportunity for the canneries and other Steveston businesses to sponsor a candidate known as the “Salmon Queen.” In 1978, the Salmon Queen Carnival was officially renamed the Steveston Salmon Festival, and the last queen was crowned in 1986.
Al Sakai, president of the Steveston Community Society, has been the festival’s chairperson for three years and is excited to see the return of a full-scale celebration.
clothing, grab your Canadian flag and get ready to wave it high and proud. Watch for everyone’s favourite Steveston mascot, Sammy the Salmon, who measures a whopping 7’2” tall; he will be aboard the Steveston Community Society’s float.
Mary Ann Pizzinato, the festival’s new coordinator, emceed the parade in 2019; she is thrilled that the parade is returning, as the community greatly missed it. Urey Chan is this year’s parade director, and he promises there will be community floats aplenty.
The kids’ bike parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Pre-registration is not required, just show up before 9:15 a.m. with your decorated bikes, wagons, scooters, skateboards, or rollerblades, and be prepared to have fun. Helmets are mandatory, and a responsible adult must accompany all children.
The Canada Day parade begins at 10:00 a.m. Round up your red and white
Pass the syrup, please! The Pancake Breakfast is hosted by The Rotary Club; breakfast is served hot off the griddle between 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the community centre’s parking lot. The Rotary Club proudly serves early risers and Salmon Festival volunteers.
He says, “This year, the event is all about community.”
Another crowd-pleasing tradition is returning; Canfisco will be grilling salmon over the open fire pit. Although the BBQ at home kit was a creative and popular solution during the pandemic, the in-person barbecue is a huge part of this special day.
Note: If you haven’t driven by the community centre lately, the east side of the parking lot is now under construction for the new community centre.
Across the street, the Easthope Avenue parking lot will be home to the Spirit of Steveston zone with entertainment and an adult beverage area. Food trucks will be located along Easthope, and the local restaurants will offer diverse dining options.
People will be excited to learn the chow mein booth is also returning. The west side of the parking lot will come alive with dining options hosted by various community organizations.
The main stage will be in the community centre parking lot. Local bands and community performers can be enjoyed at stages throughout the village, including the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Britannia Shipyards and along the boardwalk.
Fun fact: Before the pandemic, over 3,000 plates of salmon were sold each year.
Other festival highlights include the Japanese Cultural Show, Horticultural Show, the Youth Zone, martial arts demonstrations, and the trade show and marketplace in the Net Shed.
The Steveston Community Society is also organizing an art show for festival visitors to admire and purchase works by local artists.
Mary Ann comments, “We are delighted to host the 76th Steveston Salmon Festival and once again shine the spotlight on our historic village. In previous years, as many as 80,000 people have spent the day in Steveston celebrating Canada’s birthday. This is an exciting time for Steveston; people are thrilled to gather and celebrate together finally.”

The Kids’ Fun Zone will offer a bouncing good time with inflatables, entertainment, and other activities.

What can be used in place of Esberitox to fend off colds and flus?
Now that Esberitox has been discontinued, many parents are scrambling to find an alternative that is as effective for kids and adults for minimizing the severity and duration of cough and cold symptoms.
Esberitox was easy to take and well-tolerated. One of the forerunners is Sisu’s Cold & Flu Rescue Capsules, which consists of Ester-C, Andrographis, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, Echinacea angustifolia (narrowleaf echinacea), and Echinacea purpuria (purple coneflower); Esberitox also contained E.purpuria. There is also a kid’s chewable formula (age 4-9), which has Zinc, Vitamin A, and beta-carotene in place of Andrographis, NALC, and E.angustifolia. They are best used at the onset of symptoms and as a preventative to stimulate and regulate immunity if those around you are not well.
