Welcome, autumn! There is much to love about this season, including the earthy smell of fallen leaves, the return of soups and stews, apple pies, and pumpkin spice that infuses its tasty flavour into many baked goods and beverages. Local fields are laden with pumpkins, signalling the approach of Thanksgiving and Halloween.
The Steveston Merchants Association is gearing up for its fall events. October commences with the month-long Steveston Scarecrow Crawl and wraps up with Trick-or-Treating at participating businesses. Wander through the village to view the imaginative scarecrows created by our local merchants; a $1,000 prize will be awarded for the best scarecrow. Check out The Haunted Sea at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery during October. Girls’ Night Out takes place on November 23. This much anticipated evening is a great chance to spend time with friends and get an early start on holiday shopping at businesses offering extended hours and specials. It’s also an opportunity to dine at your favourite restaurant and raise a glass to friendship.
On December 3, Santa will make his grand entrance by boat at Fisherman's Wharf! Join the festivities, including the Christmas Classic Car Cruise and a ride on an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage around the village. Last year’s inaugural dog parade was a resounding success and promises to be even better this year. Merchants will also participate in a festive window display competition. Stay tuned for more details about Winter in the Village!
The Steveston Community Society Christmas Craft Fair takes place on November 25. Dates for Breakfast with Santa and haywagon rides will be announced shortly. Be sure to visit the beautifully adorned Festival of Trees on display at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery throughout December.

In 2012, Dr. Michele Nielsen took over ownership of the successful clinic from her father. Steveston Smiles' skilled dental team prides itself on providing a compassionate, family-oriented atmosphere.
'Tis the season to contemplate stocking up on wine. Read the story of Heather Hannah and Bill Koopmans, proprietors of Steveston Winemakers. It’s a relief to be greeted by cooler weather after this summer’s drought and wildfires. Grab a sweater and head out for a walk in the crisp air or take a bike ride along the dyke. Relax on a restaurant patio and soak up the sun. Steveston is so beautiful in autumn; we hope you enjoy every minute of it!
STEVESTON SMILES: Keeping Steveston Smiling for Fifty Years
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra SteierPeople have been turning to family-owned Steveston Smiles for dental care since 1973 when Dr. Doug Nielsen and Dr. Bob Jamieson opened the Steveston Dental building.
who listen and have the talent and skill to achieve the results you're looking for, whether it's a simple procedure or a life-changing transformation.
Dr. Doug Nielsen’s daughter, Michele Nielsen, worked in the office in her teens; she assisted at the front desk and with sterilization.
She says, “I wanted to be a dentist when I was 13 and saw a root canal procedure at the office. As I was finishing high school, I tried to think of any career other than dentistry to ensure I wasn’t just doing it because my dad was a dentist, and my mom was a hygienist. In that process, I realized dentistry truly combined everything I loved.”
Michele graduated from McGill University with a degree in dentistry and began working alongside her father in 2002; she took ownership of Steveston Smiles in 2012. Her father continued to work at the clinic until he retired in 2022.
“It has been strange not seeing him every week. I am happy for him; he dedicated his life to dentistry and the community of Richmond. It’s time for him to have time for himself. When he was working, he would often stop by on the days he wasn’t scheduled, even at 7:30 a.m. When he retired, I expected him to be by the office all the time; however, he has been able to step away. I’m proud of him for making himself a priority,” says Michele.
Many changes have occurred, including Dr. Jamieson’s practice becoming part of Steveston Smiles in 2015, which increased the clinic from two to four dentists. Dr. Selena Chow, Dr. Sajjal Pirzada and Dr. Casi Sutherland round out Steveston Smiles’ skilled general dentistry team. Sadly, Dr. Jamieson passed away in 2020.
“One of my first assistants always said, ‘Make friends with change.’ Dentistry is constantly growing and changing.”
Michele sees patients three days a week, handles administrative business, and manages social media, newsletters, and special events planning. Her husband, Chris, left his full-time job in 2015 to be a stay-at-home dad and help manage the practice behind the scenes. In the fall of 2021, he became Steveston Smiles' office manager. Chris has an active, front-facing role in the practice and supports the entire team and their patients. He has taken dental reception training and specialized training in dental office management.
One reception area was created when the two practices merged. Rooms were reorganized to create a single doctor’s office for the clinic, and a centralized sterilization area with the most up-to-date requirements was added.
In 2017, Steveston Smiles acquired their first iTero scanner; they now have three.
“The iTero is my favourite machine in the office. It allows us to do dental health scans. We can do a 3D digital scan of the mouth that allows the dentist to evaluate the patient’s teeth, bite, gum health and detect decay. Future scans can be digitally compared to detect changes. It is a tool that supports our practice’s goals of prevention and keeping teeth for a lifetime.”
“We always want to be on top of the new advances and ensure we are up to date, growing and improving.”
Five dental hygienists, five dental assistants, and four business assistants help this busy practice to thrive.
treatment that takes only a few minutes with no recovery time and offers immediate relief.
Michele explains, “Solea uses a wavelength of light delivered in thousands of pulses per second, providing an analgesic effect that takes away almost all the sensation. Most patients can skip anesthesia because they just don’t need it. We are excited to have this cutting-edge treatment available at Steveston Smiles.”
If snoring is a problem for you or your spouse, Dr. Michele is trained in Solea Sleep, which reduces or eliminates snoring by tightening tissue in the soft palate and reducing vibrations that cause snoring. Unlike surgical procedures that require incisions, stitches and long recoveries, Solea Sleep is a nonsurgical laser
“Steveston Smiles focuses on prevention and education. We want to educate you about your oral health and prevent further dental work as much as possible. We provide the information and tools to help make the best decision for you.”
In addition to her work at Steveston Smiles, Michele is a forensic odontologist. She is a volunteer director with the Fort-BC Society (Forensic Odontology Response Team). Her role is treasurer and leader of the MUPs (Missing and Unidentified Persons) division. She participates in forensic dental identification and International Military disaster response training and assists in bringing closure to families with missing loved ones in B.C.
Michele and Chris have two sons, aged 12 and 14 years old. They also have two dogs, Shadow (9 years) and Russell (10 months).
The Solea Laser can replace the dental drill in many procedures.
“We are a family practice. We see patients from ages 0 to 102.”
Michele says, “Lately, my hobbies are training Russell and stopping him from eating our shoes. A lot of my “spare” time is spent doing social media for the office; I enjoy it, which is why I do it myself and in my volunteer role with Fort-BC society. I love art, and I paint rocks. You can see some around the office, and occasionally there are some at the front desk that patients can take.”
Steveston Smiles takes a proactive approach to tooth decay by offering all ghouls and goblins an attractive post-Halloween offer. Donate your candy during their annual Sweet Swap (between November 1 - 6) for a chance to win a $400 gift card to CF Richmond Centre. The contest is open to everyone; you need not be a Steveston Smiles patient to enter. Now that is sweet!
Happy fiftieth anniversary, Steveston Smiles, and thank you for all the beautiful smiles you create!

Are there new herbal remedies to fight cold and flu?
Many modern formulations consist of multiple herbs and nutrients to take advantage of their synergistic abilities. This applies to the modern cold and flu remedies, many of which target the immune system, allowing it to escalate more quickly and respond more appropriately. AOR’s Cold & Flu rely on the actions of 3 herbs, South African Geranium, Tinospora, and Andrographis, all of which have deep traditions in ayurvedic medicine for respiratory infections. There is also some zinc and copper, which are required by white blood cells and immune cellular biochemical processes.
New Roots Herbal offers their “Vitamin C8”, which is a smart mix of antioxidants and enzymes. It consists of Japanese knotweed, Vitamin C, berry extract (for anthocyanidins), green tea, citrus bioflavonoids, cranberry, grape seed extract, rutin, bilberry, bromelain, papain, black pepper; the minerals, manganese, zinc, and selenium round off this highly useful complex. Both “Cold & Flu” and “Vitamin C8” can be used for prevention and treatment. Furthermore, they are both well-tolerated, so, once you have a differential diagnosis, they can easily be integrated into virtually any daily regimen. Check with us regarding other options, including mushroom and nutritional therapies.
STEVESTON WINEMAKERS: A World of Wine Awaits You
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier & Carolynne PallaInflation is causing many of us to consider our purchases; however, it is reassuring to know that if wine is your passion, you can still stock your wine cellar and save money.
Steveston Winemakers has been a Steveston fixture for 23 years, with both new and longterm customers producing bottles of wine from grapes around the world. Owners Heather Hannah and Bill Koopmans were initially customers; they purchased the business in 2018 to continue making the outstanding wines they love.
Homemade
Bill says, “Many people cannot taste the difference unless they have a very sophisticated palate. We challenge the average person to taste the difference.”
They mention their daughter hosted a blindtasting party at her home featuring rosé wines. Her wine competed against commercially produced rosés and, impressively, placed second.
Heather and Bill have put considerable effort into making the business their own. Bill comes from an IT background and has skillfully applied his knowledge to create systems to easily reorder products and schedule when to rack and filter wines with the press of a button.
Heather has created a website that provides extensive information and is well worth a visit. You will discover a tasting wheel to learn which wines pair nicely with food, a wine profile chart, a cellaring and bottling chart, an extensive list of all the wine kits, and much more.
wines have come a long way and can be cellared for four to five years.
The store previously did not have a presence on social media and now can be found on Facebook, Instagram and has its own YouTube channel.
Staff member Paul offers a wealth of knowledge with over 30 years of experience in the wine-making business. Heather mentions he is so well-liked that clients often invite him for dinner.
Making your own wine is appealing for various reasons. There is a cost savings when a bottle of wine can be made for as little as $4.23 to $8.56 a bottle including taxes (bottles are not included in the price, but you will keep using them). There is also the satisfaction of crafting it yourself and raising a glass at the dinner table to toast your success.
A batch consists of 30 bottles, which customers have a hand in starting and finishing.
By law, customers must start fermentation by sprinkling the package of yeast into a large plastic bucket called the primary fermenter. From there, the staff take over and do the processing.
Fermentation usually takes 11 to 12 days before the wine is racked. Next, the liquid is siphoned from the primary fermenter into clear glass containers called carboys. The client receives a call when it is time to come in and bottle, cork, shrink-wrap and label their batch. Then, the bottles are ready to take home to be cellared in a cool, dark environment.
Pre-assembled winemaking kits from the world’s top commercial wine producers allow customers to create wines using varietal grapes from America, Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain.
Ontario wines have an excellent reputation but are rarely available in B.C. liquor stores. Save yourself the trip back east; at Steveston Winemakers, you can make your own Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio.
Some of the store’s top sellers include the Winery Series Malbec (Chile) and Winery Series Riesling Gewürztraminer (Australia), the Cru Select Cabernet Malbec Carménère (Chile), Cru Select Pinot Grigio (Italy), Cru International Meritage (Okanagan), and Cru International Pinot Grigio (Italy).
Allow time if you plan to make a batch of wine for a special occasion.
Some people hope to make wine for an event five weeks away. While “cheap and cheerful” can be produced in four weeks, depending on the varietal, wine requires a minimum of two to six months to age well.
How do you know when a bottle is ready? Bill quips, “Open a bottle, try it, and open another bottle if you like it! If not, leave it and wait.”
Another option is to bag wine instead of bottling it. This is handy if you would like to lighten your load on a sailboat or camping.
A commonly asked question is whether a group can make batches of wine to share. If
one person makes a red, another makes a white, and a third makes a fruit, rosé or dessert wine, you will come home with three types of wines to cellar.
Their loyal clients come from far afield; some have moved away to Vancouver Island or the Fraser Valley but will make the trip back to their favourite U-Vin store. Heather reports, “A group of families come in four times a year and make it a day trip.”
The holiday season is fast upon us. Original gift ideas can be found, including kitchen towels, wine glasses, corkscrews, and gift certificates (in the form of a bottle) for the wine lovers on your list to make their own batch.
Heather and Bill enjoy hearing customers report that the shop provides excellent service and love the overall experience.
Bill says, “Our shop is the happiest place in Steveston. We love living, working, and actively participating in this wonderful community.”
