WELCOME The 19th Annual LA Art Show is the longest running platform for contemporary, modern, historic, and traditional fine art in the country, featuring painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and video from over 140 prominent galleries from around the globe. Designed with the serious collector in mind, The LA Art Show is entirely unique in the art world, providing attendees with a complete art experience. The LA Art Show features three distinct sections: The Modern & Contemporary Section, the Historic & Traditional Contemporary Section, and the Los Angeles IFPDA Fine Print Fair Section.

The Big Melt: The Absolute Metamorphosis of the Art World Over the Last Twenty-Five Years and Into the Future
In the 70s the avant-garde was tiny - every night in New York, they could fit into the famous nightclub "Max's Kansas City." It was a gathering spot for musicians, poets, artists and politicians. Today, the innovators for arts and culture reach across nations. One can see art's new economic influence everywhere. The art world is not only bigger, but is rapidly changing. Many "alternative art" economies throughout the world are burgeoning. Some include: street art, online art, high tech art, and crafts gone wild. This is just a glimpse of the topic to be discussed.

Art + Architecture: Building Museums for the Future
Designing a public art collection space can be a complicated task. The building alone can be an artwork in itself, a world icon drawing millions. Yet to stand the tests of time, and to reflect the community and the collection it serves, it must house works of perpetuity and incorporate room for growth. This intriguing dialog will explore how many different institutions are tackling these challenges and building museums of the future.

Join James Magni, the designer of the LA Art Show VIP lounge, Architectural Digest’s Top 100 Designer, and Robb Report’s Top 40 Interior Designers worldwide, for an illustrated conversation about how light and design, art and spirituality, have inspired and shaped his 25-year career. Magni Design is sought after by contemporary art collectors from the US, Mexico, and Moscow. He has worked with Eugenio Lopez from the famed Jumex collection as well as several Moca Board members. His highly sophisticated, modern homes are beautifully captured in his new book, Magni Modernism. Book signing to follow lecture.

Rediscovering Andy: A Hidden Treasure Trove of Warhol’s Most Prolific Work
Andy Warhol exhibited his photographs in a gallery only once. It was in 1987, just three weeks before his untimely death. From his early use of a Times Square photo booth, to the "Polaroid Big Shot" used at his studio "The Factory," photography was at the core of Warhol's creative process. Warhol's photography, however, lacked widespread institutional support until collector James Hedges began amassing the world's largest private collection of Warhol's photos and exhibiting the works at galleries around the world during the past few years. This intriguing history will detail why these works fell overlooked and underappreciated, and how, during the past decade, the market for such has greatly intensified.

The Impact and Evolution of Latin American Art in the United States
A panel discussion of some leading Latin American art experts presenting the impact, importance, and evolution of Latin American art in the United States. Some panel members include: Andres Navia, Director of Art Museum of the Americas, representatives from MOCA Los Angeles, the Museum of Latin American Art, and Dermis de Leon, a Cuban Curator currently working in Germany, among others. Moderated by Marisa Caichiolo, President of Building Bridges Art Foundation.

Art and Technology Combine to Bring Van Gogh’s Vision to Life
In a letter to his brother Theo, dated December 1882, Vincent Van Gogh wrote about a plan for making “prints for the people.” Over a hundred years later, the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam, in association with Fujifilm Belgium, has made Van Gogh’s vision a reality.
Limited Editions of great masterpieces have been certified by the Museum with a technology that will change the world of art as we know it. This fascinating panel discussion is sure to arouse your curiosity and wet your palette.
5:30 FEATURED PROGRAM: The "Hues of China" artists and industry pm leaders behind China's contemporary art scene In recent years, China’s contemporary art scene has flourished in recent years, and is now well known throughout the world. In partnership with the LA Art Show, the National Base for International Cultural Trade in Shanghai, will present this special exhibition on Chinese Contemporary art. Hues of China will be comprised of three elements: the power of the emerging generation, the state of Chinese ceramics, and a selection of elite art galleries. The program will also include a lecture featuring leading Chinese artist He Gong and prominent artist, ceramic collector, and gallery owner, Heliang Qi. 12

Moss; Andrew Perchuk, Deputy Director of the Getty Research Institute; and Peter Frank, Curator and Critic will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the art movement over the last several decades.

The Power of Beautifully Dressed Parisian Women - on Bicycles
Photographer, television producer, university lecturer, and former Los Angeles County District Attorney, Gil Garcetti, will share with us how his photography and political career have allowed him to explore urban areas watching the influence of bicycle riders and bike sharing programs as ways of alleviating traffic congestion, improving one’s health, and helping make our air a bit cleaner.
Gil’s photographs will be exhibited in Bordeaux in 2014 as part of Los Angeles’ Sister City Program. 13

FEATURE PROGRAM: Treasures of the Mayan Spirit Museo Maya de América: Celebrating and Conserving the Archeological and Ethnographic Treasures of Guatemala
The Los Angeles Jewelry & Antique Show will debut Treasures of the Maya Spirit, the world’s most comprehensive exhibition of Maya art and ethnography featuring more than 150 ancient cultural treasures from the Classic Period of Maya civilization and Maya ritual art. Fernando Piaz, President of La Ruta Maya, will discuss the museum’s development as well as the national and international importance of celebrating and preserving the rich history and culture of the Maya in Guatemala.

Panelists will discuss and debate just how Los Angeles, its citizens and visitors, will benefit from the establishment of the new Mural Ordinance law.

Featuring over 140 international and domestic galleries hailing from 22 countries and 18 states, this year’s fair represents our broadest sampling of art to date. As a perfect complement to our diverse roster, this year’s beneficiary, Sister Cities of Los Angeles, is dedicated to building strong international relationships through cultural and educational exchanges, economic partnerships, and humanitarian assistance. ART IN A GLASS The Bordeaux wine growing region is situated in the South West of France.In addition to being famous for its wines, the region also offers a rich cultural and architectural heritage. The city of Bordeaux, the Saint-Emilion village and vineyards, the citadel of Blaye and the Gironde estuary are all classified UNESCO world heritage sites. The beauty of the region, its unique landscape and exceptional architecture are reflected in each and every glass of Bordeaux wine. The region’s typical climate conditions and rich soil combined with mild rainy winters and warm dry summers, plus wine growing know-how, make Bordeaux wines unique. Wine was already made in Bordeaux under the Romans. Today, the Bordeaux vineyards produce various colours and styles of wines: Dry red and white wines, sweet and sparkling whites, and still and sparkling, rosés. Bordeaux is home to the internationally renowned
grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon. The Bordeaux producers, whose work is reflective of skillful artists, perfectly master the art of blending fine wines. Under 60 different AOC’s, 7,800 wine estates produce on average 145 million gallons per year. Bordeaux accounts for 25% of the total French AOC surface area; around 1.5% of the world’s AOC surface area. In 2012 Bordeaux wines were sold for an approximate value of 6.1 billion dollars.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is honored to participate in the upcoming LA ART SHOW 2015 as the Featured Guest Country. The UAE will curate a special exhibition that will showcase some of the country’s top contemporary artists and highlight the nation as an international hub for culture and art. Throughout the UAE, there is an exciting new array of museums, art shows, and galleries that celebrates the nation’s rich cultural heritage, as well as displays of diverse international art.
As an example,
the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi will be home to several stunning architectural and cultural icons including, the Sheikh Zayed National Museum, a world class performing arts center, and outposts of world renowned museums the Guggenheim and the Louvre. Dubai, meanwhile, is emerging as an important destination for artistic institutions, dealers and collectors, all looking for art with a fresh – and distinctly global – twist. Sharjah is another prominent cultural center, featuring over 20 museums and the Sharjah Biennial, which fosters cultural collaboration and opportunity for artists and exhibitors. In addition to government investment, the UAE’s developing arts and culture scene is being driven at the grassroots level by local trailblazers who have opened dozens of independent galleries in recent years. Founded in 1971, the UAE is a federation of seven city-states (or emirates), located in the heart of the Arabian Gulf. Originally home to small fishing towns and a Bedouin people, Emiratis have forged a distinct national identity that combines the traditional with the modern. This unique identity, and vision for an even better future, will be captured in the work of local artists that will be exhibited at the 2015 LA Art Show.

BREATHING A Curated Exhibition Sponsored by World Capital Market Breathing is the essence of life. Breathing is a sign of life. It delivers oxygen to the body to enable function, and removes carbon dioxide: the unneeded by-product of these reactions. Chen Jiu, b. 1957 Director of Zhu Qizhan Art Museum & Shanghai Duolun Art Museum Laozi, a Chinese ancient philosopher, said that “the greatest virtue is like water, which is advantageous to everything but not fighting for anything.” Through the study of the praise of water in The Book of Odes to the observation of water under today’s micro technology as well as the conservation of water resource and the environment, Chen Jiu turns his thoughts toward water into the diversification of 24 Solar Terms. The artist explained, “…With a brush on my hand, I gaze at the gurgling water from a distance. I want to preserve the grace of flowing water with 24 Solar Terms: endless and boundless, the light skims over the water by chance. I aim to depict the special states of water with my interlacing brushstrokes”. The graceful style of water is being turned into abstract language with brush and ink.

Synopsis Gold Underground Yulin, once the poorest region of Northwest China, has rapidly become “China’s Kuwait” for the mining industry launched in recent years. The film is consisted of three stories about coal by three different narrative methods to depict the life in the coal mine, heavy truck and coal information agency, through which to show the strong anxiety for wealth in every corner of the daily life and the dilemma of choice for contemporary Chinese people.

The subject of the installation is to stress the concern for our living environment, one that has great impact on our fate, soul, and spirit. It is one form of reflection and critique of our reality and environment. It displays a conversion of material, turning the traditional Chinese commodity, artificial rock, into ash. The dust is double in it’s meaning. It is clear representation of harmful pollutants to our bodies, but also commentary on corruption. Corruption, just like how the dust corrupts the body, also stems from social conflicts that have extended into the environment and culture. The heavy price, is the loss of the landscape - leaving people numb to the dire state of the environment.

My eyes brightened up when I first came across Zhang Xinquan’s oil paintings of modern cityscape. In contemporary Chinese oil painting, it is rare, if not never ever, to find paintings representing modern industrial civilization with unique artistic language and challenging visual images. In addition to the new aesthetic experience it brought me, the schematism of vessels, ports, automobiles, and airplanes made me ponder over the civilization changes, the development tendency of art, the aesthetic formulary of the nation and the time spirit of art after China stepped into the modern world. The Dimensions of Chinese Contemporary Art 2014
Never before has Chinese contemporary art been so widely known and acclaimed as it is today. In the past few years in particular, a dynamic array of Chinese contemporary art exhibitions have been held in various first-rate museums and galleries in the Western world, drawing significant attention from collectors worldwide. In addition, nearly every recently published book on art history contains chapters about Chinese contemporary artists. The 2014 LA Art Show’s featured China Exhibition is themed Hues of China, conveying focus, reflection and diversity, which is an exact depiction of China’s art circle today, so vigorous, innovative and diverse. If fixed in a 1990s mindset, one will not be able to understand the rapid changes happening in today’s China and the younger generations’ artwork. Artists born in the 1950s and 1960s dwell more on retrospective thinking and a mental digestion of their past experience and memories, while those born in the 1970s and 1980s shift their focus to a broader range of topics, including daily life, individual space, and external changes. Hues of China, this year’s exhibition, apart from displaying work from artists born in the ‘50s and ‘60s, will put the spotlight on younger generations.

A Mixed Delight The first section, A Mixed Delight, offers a refined collection of work from three different top-notch galleries. Wang Xiaosong, from Author Gallery, is one of the rising stars in abstract art. Breaking the traditional rules in 2D art, he uses a tapestry of bouncing and swirling brush strokes to create a relieflike effect. Dots on his painting look like a hustling group of interdependent individuals who stack up against each other and expand at different levels, creating something analogous to an ant colony, or the world in which we are living.

Flyovers have changed the shape of cities, as well as their speed and purity. Surrounded by exhaust fumes, people seem to have lost themselves. Big Family by Lei Qiaobin expresses a view that even though we come from one big family, each individual has to deal with their own existence. A look at the familiar city to accelerate change, but everything is lost in the smoke.

Young and Reckless Shanghai Art Fair has always been dedicated to introducing the world to new talented artists. In the Young and Reckless, one of the sections of the Hues of China Exhibition, young Chinese artists, filled with passion and daring originality, will share their life experiences and unique insight into today’s fastchanging world through the medium of art. For example, a series of artwork like September in Shanghai by Shanghai Normal University and Narration-Space by Hubei Institute of Fine Arts have depicted, from different perspectives, the limited individual space of China’s moderately well-off urban citizens. The former is more symbolic, filled with ambition, expectation, and anxiety for the unknown future. The artwork series New Urban Fables by the College of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, further reveals the inner world of the contemporary generation. In their work, there are no heroic epic or revolutionary storms, but only a common concern about globalization, our future home, the environment, and dying cities. Love Bird, by depicting a scene of daily life, mirrors the isolation between people and what they long for. In contrast, work from Nanjing Normal University, like Quilt, Motorcycles, and Desk Lamp, share an intimate personal experience by presenting privately-used objects with a touch of warmth, which will trigger a rush of association on the part of the audience.

The California Art Club, established in 1909, is one of the oldest and largest fine arts organizations in America. Zhang yu installation
Zhang Yu Fingerprints-Conception and Form (Installation, Image), 2013 Xuan paper, Silk, Monitor 450 x 730 cm Zhang Yu’s work Fingerprints 15 January 2014 is a large-scale spatial installation created by him specifically for the LA Art Show. The work consists of a combination of Fingerprints works on 30 scrolls of xuan paper, each measuring 90cm x 620cm. These 30 long banners with their red fingerprints are suspended from above in a patchwork that forms a spectacular and intriguing red wall. The mystery and power of this red wall made up by the red fingerprints on thirty strips of thin xuan paper is unpredictable. This artistic expression is fulfilled by the artist’s bodily performance, in which the traces of overlapping fingerprints completely convert the xuan paper into something physical, thus thoroughly subverting its original significance. At the same time it already goes far beyond the cognitive level conveyed visually to the viewer. The artist efficiently associates the everyday experience of the fingerprinting performance with the artistic expression of the realm of cultivation practice, and so the expression of the fingerprinting performance goes far beyond the performance of fingerprinting as such, while the expression involved in the fingerprinting performance simultaneously even farther transcends the structure of the visual appearance of this large-scale spatial installation work. We thus discover that the artist’s creation of these fingerprinting works does altogether not reside in their visual appearance, but, rather, underlies their visual expression, and to an even higher degree is to be found in the spiritual connotations consciously preset for us by the artist. 234

TREASURES OF THE MAYA SPIRIT
Museo Maya de America, in conjunction with La Ruta May Foundation, will debut Treasures of the Maya Spirit, the world’s most comprehensive exhibition of Maya art and ethnography featuring more than 150 ancient cultural treasures from the classic period of Maya civilization (250-900 AD) and a number of significant examples of late 19th and early 20th Century Maya ritual art. DESIGN VIGNETTES
These showcases, created by renowned interior designers, tell a story of how art, furniture, and antiquities complement the comforts of home and everyday life. Illustrating how a fine art collection can be effectively integrated into an interior design setting, these vignettes offer visitors a snapshot of how to create an inspiring environment out of any sized space.
FIDM
The FIDM Museum Fashion Council is raising funds to support the purchase of The Helen Larson Historic Fashion Collection—1,400 pieces of clothing and accessories dating from the 1600s to the 1930s, assembled by Southern Californian Helen Larson between 1946 and 1996. This world-class collection is noteworthy for object rarity and provenance.

This exciting opening night delight will feature several couture and celebrity designers including Kevan Hall, and Sue Wong, creating a lush couture experience. Models adorned in designer pieces, dresses and costumes, will circulate among guests and selectively pose on pedestals during the course of the evening.

Dear Arts Enthusiast, On behalf of the Staff, Board of Directors and Artists of the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA), please allow me to welcome you to the 2014 Los Angeles Art Show and the Los Angeles Fine Art Show. As I reflect on a new year, I’m proud of LAAA’s 89-year role in the formation of Los Angeles’ arts community. Today, I remain committed to our ongoing mission of providing emerging artists with the experience, education and exposure needed to create and sustain careers in the arts. Our unique status as a non-profit organization provides us with the flexibility for risk-taking beyond what is possible in the commercial gallery system, thereby positioning the organization as a driver of innovative, contemporary content in Los Angeles. As THE place for emerging art in Los Angeles, LAAA serves as both a feeder resource for the larger art community and a highly visible platform that fosters greater awareness for exciting, emerging artists. Mindful of the huge impact that emerging artists make to all aspects of our shared quality of life, LAAA believes that emerging artists, even the most non-traditional talents, require access to a professional exhibition space and the career support to expand and realize their singular artistic visions. The successes and expanded services we provide to local artists and art advocates address important needs not confronted by most civic and cultural agencies. By filling this need LAAA has developed into an essential resource for Los Angeles’ emerging artists. In 2013 alone, LAAA expanded our mission in the following ways to meet the needs of local artists: • LAAA served over 500 artists of all media, provided 26 scholarships to economically challenged artists, presented 27 exhibitions at Gallery 825, 10 offsite exhibitions, 48 artists critique groups and 8 artists talks. • LAAA exhibited at many national art fairs and exhibitions including The 2013 LA Art Show, The Palm Springs Fine Art Fair, The San Francisco Fine Art Fair, The Beverly Hills Art Show, Photo LA and in the Miami Design District during Art Basel Miami Beach. • Internationally, LAAA exhibited at Projektraum M54 in Basel, Switzerland during Art Basel. • LAAA’s commitment to community outreach and serving all artists was demonstrated by our 6th annual Out There exhibit, celebrating Gay Pride Month and Equity for All Artists, a special exhibition featuring artists with paralysis and spinal cord injury. • While LAAA has a lean, mission-driven staff, we enjoy the benefit of more than 1200 hours of annual volunteer service that greatly enhances our ability to operationalize our many services and events. While our two featured installations by artists David Jang and Cindy Jackson at the Los Angeles Art Show are highlights of our 2014 programming, I would like to extend a personal invitation for you to join us throughout the year as we advance our mission with special exhibits and events. In his installation, High Capacities David Jang seeks to establish intimacy with consumer matter and then willfully proceeds to transform the material. The artist’s thirst for novelty shifts the attention away from the product to the process and the consumer. Jang’s primary tactic is to subvert, dissect, comprehend, and redirect property (and its use in mechanical reproduction) to verify its potentiality and truth (or uncover its lie). In this way, the invisible inner workings of things are made visible.

Cindy Jackson’s sculptural installation, (Not Quite) Salvation, explores the various ways redemption and meaning are sought in today’s society. What we show to the world are outward symbols of our various paths for redemption. Completely covered with Louis Vuitton and Gucci logos, one couple is a powerful symbol of emotional entanglement, as well as the literal embodiment of consumerism and superficial pleasure/desire. A man on his knees seeks salvation; his body is surfaced with the emblems of his worship as tattoos-seeking transcendence using the gritty urban poetry of his skin as a canvas.

Dear Friends, We are proud to initiate our third full year as a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts and culture organization through our participation in Los Angeles’ oldest and largest art fair – The Los Angeles Art Show. Participation in this event facilitates LAUNCH’s mission to create new platforms for the current as well as the next generation of local, world-class art-makers. Over the past twelve months, LAUNCH produced exhibitions and performance projects for over 50 artists in Los Angeles at our gallery space on LaBrea Avenue, 2 art fairs in California and through our annual free multi-disciplinary festival, TARFEST. Thousands of Californians have visited these exhibitions and events to discover, experience and support important projects by artists in multiple disciplines. LAUNCH began a busy 2013 presenting 6 artists at the Los Angeles Art Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This was our second year of participating in this excellent event with a marked increase in attendance and enthusiasm of guests and participants from all over the world. In February, LAUNCH participated in the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair exhibiting selections by 7 local artists. February also brought the first exhibition of the New Year at LAUNCH Gallery, 170 S. LaBrea Avenue, by veteran artist Gina Stepaniuk. William Wray and Thomas Frontini exhibited in March, Alexandra Dillon in April, Jorge Oswaldo in May, and Tanja Rector in July. A dynamic group exhibition of the Namaak Collective was presented by local member-artists Marischa Slusarski and Brit Ehringer. The Fall Season brought a spectacular new series of large scale works by LAUNCH stalwart, Marion Lane. Recent graduate, Bryan Ricci, presented his first body of work since graduating in May, 2012 with a MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Finally in November, LAUNCH was honored to present new work by Doug Edge, a veteran of the Southern California art-making and teaching community for over 45 years. The La Brea Tar Pits was again the site of the 11th Annual TARFEST - Music and Art Festival held on September 21st at the LaBrea Tar Pits Park. Five bands, 3 painters, 2 sculptors, a poet and a face painter presented works and performed enthusiastically for over 4,000 Angelenos of all ages and backgrounds at this free event. For the 2014 Los Angeles Art Fair, LAUNCH is pleased to present several artists we have worked with in the past as well as artists scheduled for this upcoming year. Each of these art-makers exemplify the quality and diversity of our program and further our mission - Todd Carpenter, Marion Lane, William Wray, Doug Edge, Tanja Rector and Bryan Ricci. Women & Bicycles, an exhibition A serendipitous photo of an ironworker working on the construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles led Gil Garcetti to a new career in photography in 2002. Through his photographs, he shared the beauty of the geometry of the raw steel and added to the pictorial history of the city of his birth, Los Angeles. His subsequent six books have all been photo essays. While showing beauty through the unique eye of the artist, he also calls one’s attention to the subjects of the books and often invokes a call to action. Dance in Cuba, shows the ardent spirit of the Cuban people through their dance, despite lives of extreme poverty. Water is Key tells the story of how clean water in villages in West Africa changes

the lives, health, education, and destiny of the people there, especially that of women and girls. Paris: Women on Bicycles, while showing elegantly clad women bicycle riders throughout Paris, asks us to consider how getting out of our cars to do everyday activities can help reduce traffic congestion and clean up our environment. Gil’s photographs have been exhibited at venues throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His next photo book, JAPAN: A REVERENCE FOR BEAUTY, is scheduled for release in April 2014. Having been a prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for 32 years, eight of which were as the elected District Attorney (19922000), Gil oversaw 1100 prosecutors and 2000 support staff. He placed special focus on domestic violence, juvenile justice, and child support cases. He also initiated specific programs designed to prevent crime, especially juvenile crime. While taking in the sights of Paris, Garcetti saw an elegantly dressed
woman riding her bicycle towards him. His camera was ready. She was sitting upright without a helmet or riding gloves. As he began thinking of how he would photograph her, she came to the corner and stopped. Her long, wavy hair covered most of her face. This woman and the photograph he took were the beginnings of a photo book project: Paris: Women & Bicycles. For Garcetti, there is a much larger purpose to this photo project. Might urban areas in the United States replicate what Paris has accomplished by promoting safe bicycle usage and, thereby, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality as well as the health of their citizens? Paris: Women & Bicycles was the calling card for Garcetti to meet with local government officials and to give speeches and presentations on this subject to groups and organizations. Garcetti believes that some day, a visitor to any given city in the United States will remark about the wonder of so many women and men, of all ages, riding their bicycles rather than in cars. A fantasy? A dream? Just look at the city of Paris!
In conjunction with the Paris: Women & Bicycles exhibition, photographer, television producer, university lecturer, and former Los Angeles County District Attorney, Gil Garcetti’s panel discussion, The Power of Beautifully Dressed Parisian Women—on Bicycles—on Saturday, January 18, 2014 (2 p.m.)—will share with us how, through his photography and political experience, he has been able to move urban areas to look at bicycle riders and bike sharing programs as ways of alleviating traffic congestion, improving citizens’ health, and making our air a bit cleaner. The Chicano Collection / LA Colección Chicana
T
o advance Chicano art as a recognized school of American art and to increase public accessibility to this body of work in cities nationwide, Cheech Marin spearheaded a project that produced limited-edition digital reproductions (gicleés) of paintings by 26 prominent Chicano artists. “Chicano art is American art. My goal is to bring the term ‘Chicano’ to the forefront of the art world,” said Marin. “Using the most advanced technology available today, we created important artistic expressions of the American experience as ‘time capsules’ to embed into top U.S. art collections and to expose them to the widest audience possible.” Managed by Melissa Richardson Banks, the project utilized sophisticated digital printing to produce only 115 sets of the 26 archival-quality prints created by Richard S. Duardo of Modern Multiples. Packaged in commemorative portfolio cases, each set is accompanied by original linocut-print portraits of the artists by Artemio Rodriguez, a short film documenting the ground-breaking project, and an introductory essay by Chon A. Noriega, PhD of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. The prints depict urban life and the Chicano experience that date between 1969 and 2001. Paintings selected as prints were primarily drawn from Marin’s collection and include artists Carlos Almaraz, Frank Romero, Patssi Valdez, George Yepes,

To help raise funds for the 2014 celebration of the 50-year partnership between the City of Los Angeles and its French Sister City, Bordeaux, Cheech Marin has designated the donation of one portfolio from The Chicano Collection / La Colección Chicana to be sold during the LA Art Show. Proceeds from this sale will be donated to the Sister Cities of Los Angeles, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to support this year-long cultural exchange. Of the 50 sets to be donated, Cheech has distributed 25 to date, and has 25 more to donate (in addition to the aforementioned one for sale, he will donate one to the Musee d’ Aquitaine Bordeaux). Recipients to date include the Smithsonian, LACMA, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Otis College of Art & Design, Duke University, National Museum of Mexican Art, and San Antonio Museum of Art.
Also on view: Exclusive preview of “Blazing Chicano Guitars” — - Six of the dozen guitars in this project will be available for sale. All feature paintings by Chicano/a artists. Artists featured in this initial release are Jari “Werc” Alvarez, Chaz Bojorquez, Gaspar Enriquez, Ricardo Ruiz, John Valadez, and Jaime “Germs” Zacarias.

About FLARE FLARE (France Los Angeles Residency Exchange) is an artist residency exchange program between Paris and Bordeaux, France and the City of Los Angeles. Now in its third edition, each year, FLARE has supported two artists from Los Angeles to conduct residencies in France and two, from Bordeaux and Paris, to conduct residencies in Los Angeles. To date, 12 artists have traveled between France and the City of Angels. The program, which is supported by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and its partners, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in Los Angeles, with funding support from the City of Bordeaux and the Institut Français, works through two residency centers in France: Cité internationale des Arts in Paris and Bordeaux’s La Fabrique POLA. Over the past three years, Los Angeles artists such as Richard Hawkins, Patricia Fernández and Pauline Shaw were able to spend two months in Bordeaux and discover its dynamic contemporary art scene, while Bordeaux artists, Benoît Maire, Laurent Le Deunff and Sabrina Soyer had an opportunity to develop projects in Los Angeles. On the Paris/Los Angeles side of the program, recipients included French artists Cyprien Gaillard and Armand Jalut, and LA artists Joel Kyack and Peter Harkawik. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles and Bordeaux as Sister Cities, the LA Art Show will host a special presentation of artworks by FLARE recipients from Los Angeles and Bordeaux including Patricia Fernández, Laurent Le Deunff, Benoît Maire, Pauline Shaw and Sabrina Soyer. FLARE (France Los Angeles Residency Exchange) is a project created by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the French Cultural Services in Los Angeles with the support of the Institut Français, the City of Bordeaux and local institutions.
Patricia Fernández Patricia Fernández was born in Burgos, Spain. She studied at Saint Martin’s College of Art, the University of California Los Angeles, and in 2010, received a MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Fernández applies an archeological approach to the family archive in order to investigate the inaccuracy of our inherited memories and the subjectivity of personal experience. Through a complex network of forms and information, she seeks to investigate histories and literatures forgotten, misplaced, or buried.

Fernández is a Joan Mitchell Grant recipient (2010) and a California Community Foundation Fellow (2011). Her project, A Record of Succession, was exhibited at the Los Angeles Biennial, Made in LA, and at ltd los angeles. Fernández was awarded the France Los Angeles Exchange Grant (2012) and since then, has been working along the Spanish-French Pyrenees, unearthing memories of the border and rewriting histories through walking. She will be presenting her project Points of Departure (between Spain and France) in upcoming exhibitions at LAX Art and the 18th Street Arts Center.
Laurent Le Deunff Born in 1977, Laurent Le Deunff lives and works in Bordeaux. At the heart of his work, there is a mechanism, which involves turning the illusion on its head and so reminding us that any worthwhile toy must ask questions. Even if the object is perfectly recognizable – staying on the subject of his sculptures, a bone, a strongbox or a tent – the raw materials are different even if they are similar. The way that Le Deunff composes his drawings and empties them of all narrative content places the spectator in front of an open expanse. This expanse, within the drawing itself (the untouched white of the paper), evokes a certain emptiness. Recent solo shows include Galerie Semiose (2013), FRAC Basse-Normandie/Caen (2012), Musée des Beaux Arts de Libourne and Abbaye Saint-André, CAC, Meymac (2011). Benoît Maire Since 2008, Benoît Maire has been writing a manual of aesthetics where images, objects and writing take form to bring forth some of contemporary aesthetics’ main issues. Starting from the différend (insurmountable conflict) between saying and seeing, Maire works in an in-between where art and philosophy merge into a practical use where forms spread out and surpass one another. Born in 1978 in Pessac, Maire, a graduate of the Villa Arson in Nice and of the Sorbonne, Paris, 1 did a post-diplôme at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Recent solo exhibitions included Spiaggia di Menzogne, Fondazione Giuliani, Rome, Weapon, David Roberts Art Fondation, London (2013), History of Geometry, Walden Affairs Den Haage, History of Geometry, Halle Für Kunst, Luneburg, The Object of Criticism, De Vleeshal, Midelburg, and Soon the metal between us will turn into gold, Kunsthalle Mulhouse (2011). He directed a full-length film, Repetition Island, presented at Tate Modern in London and at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Pauline Shaw Born in 1988, Pauline Shaw studied at Rhode Island School of Design and The University of Southern California. She has travelled and lived in both Europe and Asia. Her background has infused her art with a fanciful surrealism mixed with pop cultural connotations. Thinking about youth and the ability that children have to exist within the intersection of reality and imagination, Shaw utilizes this duality to create objects that are both whimsical and grotesque, exploring the underside of seemingly precious artifacts or mundane objects. Her work focuses on the archetype of a dream, where seemingly disparate ideas and forms coalesce to achieve a surrealistic object and state of being for the viewer. By exploring these juxtapositions, Shaw effects a form of naivety, desire, and confusion. Recent shows in 2013 include Untitled Solo Show, The Impermanent Collection Los Angeles and CutLog Art Fair, New York.

Sabrina Soyer Born in 1984, Sabrina Soyer works and lives in Bordeaux and Geneva. She uses writing, photography, sculpture and film in her practice, in order to create installations that combine stories extracted from novels and contemporary ways of life. She uses literature as a way to access the « constructed intimacy » of actors and people she works with to make her films and interviews. The objects that compose her installations are derived from cultural property, personal and communal goods, lawful inheritance and unconscious responsibility. She mixes a repertoire of materials sourced from private stories and shared histories and traditions. Her artistic career is distinguished by a fusion of collaborations in the duo SSB, which acts to base her artistic approach on the exchange of possessions and dispossession of objects, ideas and identities. Writing is a large component of her practice - both fictional and narrative texts. Travel, in theory and practice, is often the starting point for the invention of new forms of writing. She is currently working on a film adaptation of Madame Bovary in Los Angeles; this project will be fully presented in a coming exhibition at CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain in June 2014, in Bordeaux, France. 249

An Exhibition by The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA) The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA), sponsored by the 2014 LA Art Show, is proud to present a panel discussion, Will L.A. reclaim its title as “The Mural Capital of the World”? moderated by Isabel Rojas-Williams (Executive Director, MCLA) on Sunday, January 19th, 2014 at 2 p.m. In conjunction with the panel discussion, MCLA will also present a continuous exhibition (January 15th – 19th) at the Convention Center that includes pioneer muralists and artists inspired by LA’s mural culture, connecting the politics of the street to the politics of the canvas.

Simultaneously, MCLA’s exhibition will showcase artworks by pioneer muralists, such as Kent Twitchell and John Valadez, together with emerging and mid-career artists such as Pablo Cristi, Augustine Kofie, MEAR ONE, Risk, and Sonia Romero. Remaining true to our mission, MCLA played a key role in the crafting and passage of the mural ordinance that lifted the 2002 ban on murals and was signed into law by Mayor Garcetti in September, thereby giving a new generation of artists the opportunity to create as freely as their counterparts did in past decades. With the passage of the ordinance, the cultural landRISK, Collateral Damage2 scape of Los Angeles recovers something essential that had been lost for more than ten years. This new mural ordinance changes artists’ relationship with City Hall by 180 degrees, thus giving Los Angeles a new opportunity to once again enjoy a period of fresh cultural renaissance. hoi Jeong Hwa, the internationally recognized leader of Korea’s Pop Art movement, will present a special exhibition, “The Present of the Century,” an ambitious installation featuring large scale, colorful pillars. An immersive experience, Choi Jeong Hwa’s works explore the beauty of everyday, mass produced plastic materials as a commentary on consumerism in our throw-away culture. He invites an audience to experience things in a new way that is both beautiful and humorous. Growing up in a generation that experienced a drastic modernization and economic growth, Choi Jeong Hwa’s works speak a language that transcends the boundaries of art, design, and architecture.

ee Yong Baek will be presenting a special exhibition of his work at this year’s LA Art Show titled, “Angel Soldier” which was featured in the Venice Biennale 2011 will be revisited in a special exhibition at the LA Art Show 2014. Lee Yong Baek is known for using a broad variety of media and technology in relation to the social environment. His video installation will be accompanied by a photograph exhibition on view during the course of the show. As a highlight during the Opening Gala Night at LA Art Show, two Angelenos dressed in “Angel Soldier” uniforms will be interacting with the visitors as performance art.

James M a g n i Originally trained as an architect, James Magni found his calling in residential interior design. He established Magni Design, Inc. in 1988 and launched Magni Home Collection, his furniture design studio, in 1996. Magni has been named to Architectural Digest’s prestigious Top 100 Designers list, and his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Architectural Digest, Veranda, Robb Report, and numerous other publications.
A go-to resource for elite clientele; many of Magni’s clients are part of the “Top 200” art collectors in the world. Working with global clients, Magni Design’s project range is far reaching - London, Paris, Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, and across the United States. TREASURES OF THE MAYA SPIRIT Treasures of the Maya Spirit is an exhibition that celebrates Maya culture and its contributions to the world. The exhibition will present more than 200 extraordinary examples of Pre-Columbian Maya Art, and will also feature some of the finest examples of native Guatemalan textiles, antique masks, and dance costumes, as well as contemporary works of art by prize-winning artists and anonymous artist-artisans, reflecting the Maya region´s worldview. Treasures of the Maya Spirit focuses on the art and civilization of the Maya people and is curated by several organizations headed by Gio Rossilli: Sofia Paredes Maury, Fundacion La Ruta Maya; Ines Guzman, Museo Maya de America; Raymond Senuk, Friends of Ixchel Museum; Professor Peter Markman & Dr. Alison Heney, Xipe Projects; and Adrian Lorenzana, Paiz Foundation.
La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation is a non-profit organization supporting the rescue, conservation, and preservation of Guatemalan cultural values by promoting education, dissemination, and valorisation of the Maya’s cultural heritage in the Mesoamerican region. The Foundation has a collection of more than 4,000 Pre-Columbian objects, and is responsible for the custody and management of these objects, duly registered at the Registry of Cultural Property. TREASURES OF THE MAYA SPIRIT Friends of Ixchel Museum The Friends of the Ixchel Museum, a US charitable foundation, was established in 1984. There are two primary missions for the organization: to promote interest in the Maya textile tradition through exhibitions, education and publications outside of Guatemala, and to support the work of the Museo Ixchel by funding selected projects. The textiles on exhibit are from the collection of the Friends of the Ixchel Museum. Over the years the collection has been built solely through the donation of textiles. For the most part the textiles on exhibit are ceremonial textiles reserved for special occasions including but not limited to cofradia (religious co-fraternities), weddings, baptisms, and mass attendance. They date to the first half of the 20th century and represent some of the finest examples from the period. These kinds of textiles are still being produced today but in limited numbers and with very different materials. The textiles in this exhibition were curated by Raymond Senuk. The museum/Foundation is committed to the dissemination of information through exhibitions and publications aimed to stimulate interest in Latin American masking and popular art through conducting and underwriting research that will be presented in publications, lectures, and seminars; exhibitions of material drawn primarily, but not exclusively, from the Markman’s extensive collections; and acquiring, conserving, and publishing information about the masks, costumes, dance paraphernalia, and popular art of various Latin American traditions. Their social work program started helping young Guatemalans achieve better access to education. Presently the Foundation has a yearly impact on more than 70,000 people and is dedicated to the cause of developing educational programs using the arts and culture as tools for social development. In 1978, the Paiz Foundation started a Guatemalan art Biennial, a very ambitious program which now happens to be the area’s most important visual arts event. Many of the most renowned artists in Guatemala’s modern art history have had their first exposure through the Paiz Biennial. There have been 18 editions since the Biennial’s inception, spanning 36 years of building the Foundation’s visual arts collection, where some of the most outstanding works of art can be found. Guatemala is proud to be honored at this year’s LA Art Show and in response the Paiz Foundation will exhibit a special selection of pieces from the collection curated by Adrian Lorenzana to share with the viewing public. Fundación Museo Maya de América unveils the design of Central America’s largest museum of Maya artifacts and culture. The Museo Maya de América, will be located in Guatemala City, and is to become a leading venue for the public to view objects, artifacts, artworks, textiles, and information on the history and culture of the Maya civilization. The institution is among the most ambitious cultural projects in the region, containing approximately 60,000 square meters (more than 600,000 square feet) of construction with a budget of US$60 million.
“With an enormous sense of optimism and a vision for the future, we aim to create a museum that celebrates Maya culture and carefully explains it,” states Fernando Paiz, President of the sponsoring organization Fundación Museo Maya de América. “We want the world to understand the sophistication and richness of this civilization in Guatemala and beyond.”

Organized for maximum public interaction with the site, the ground is given almost entirely to open space. The galleries reside within the floating box, which is connected to the lower levels by stairs that climb their way around a central courtyard. “The central court evokes a cenote, a type of natural sinkhole characteristic of the Yucatan and held sacred by the Maya,” states Roberto de Oliveira Castro, principal of over,under. “Open to the sky and lushly planted, the eight-story cenote functions as the heart of the museum, and it forms an orientation point within the museum that extends down to the parking levels below ground, providing an interesting route into the museum and a special place to display underworld-related artifacts.” The design of the Museo Maya de América has been developed by Harry Gugger Studio of Basel and over,under of Boston. Seis Arquitectos of Guatemala City will serve as the architect of record. Conceptual design work has been completed, and a fundraising campaign has commenced.
