THE 24TH ANNUAL LA ART SHOW THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW
IN
AMERICA
LA Art Show is the unparalleled international art experience with more than 120 galleries from over 18 countries exhibiting painting, sculpture, works on paper, installation, photography, design, video & performance. All works presented by galleries are available for your purchasing pleasure.
Los Angeles has emerged as a global epicenter of art & culture, with a distinct, interwoven multi-cultural influence unique to the city. Diversity is our strength and art is most impactful when it includes or transcends all borders. As LA rises as the world-class destination for art, LA Art Show continues to lead the way with innovative programming and one-of-a-kind experiences for an expanding collecting audience.
More than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space is committed to today’s prominent galleries. These domestic and international galleries, beyond their booths, curate special exhibits that are at the forefront of the burgeoning contemporary art movement. The fair offers an extraordinary array of works and experiences in specialized sections. Capitalizing on the city’s position on the Pacific Rim, DIVERSEartLA is a special programming section devoted to nurturing the creative energy of international collectors, artists, curators, museums and non-profits by connecting them directly with audiences in Los Angeles. The LA Art Show donates 50,000 square feet of exhibition space to participating organizations each year as a civic duty, and the featured work is not for sale. Overall curation is by Marisa Caichiolo, with individual curators from institutions around the world. This year, DIVERSEartLA will feature installations and video by Marta Minujín and Andrés Parades (presented by CCK — Buenos Aires, Argentina), performances by Sarah Trouche and Dorian Wood, and additional curated spaces by Arte Al Límite (Chile), LACMA, MOLAA, Launch LA, The Los Angeles Art Association, Art Share LA, and more.

Whether you are a seasoned collector or merely an admirer of the arts, we are certain that the LA Art Show will provide you with a special experience in the world of Modern and Contemporary Art. We have created the most diverse art show in the world. We strive towards making the LA Art Show a premiere international arts destination, in the likes of Art Basel, Frieze and The Armory Show. Art has always been at the forefront of society, bravely going where others feared to tread, whether it was the use of color, texture, composition or materials, artists have always pushed the envelope. It takes a discerning eye and measure of courage to embrace and appreciate the new and the different and today’s collectors are a brave and appreciative crowd. A show of this magnitude requires coordinated efforts from a myriad of people, and I wish to thank my entire team, especially Kim Martindale, whose dedication and hard work made this show possible. I am grateful to all our new participants and to the many great galleries that return each year who travel here so that we may enjoy their spectacular works of art. The LA Art Show is proud to serve as a vehicle for today’s galleries to showcase their artists. Our guests are provided the opportunity to enjoy a unique assortment of creative expression from all corners of the globe. I am proud to welcome you to the 24th edition of the LA Art Show and to celebrate the fertile efforts of the human mind.
Enjoy the Show!

C A M ILL E RO S E G A R C I A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Camille Rose Garcia was born in 1970 in Los Angeles, California. The child of a Mexican activist filmmaker father and a muralist/painter mother, she apprenticed at age 14 working on murals with her mother while growing up in the generic suburbs of Orange County, visiting Disneyland and going to punk shows with the other disenchanted youth of that era. Garcia’s layered, broken narrative paintings of wasteland fairy tales are influenced by William Burroughs’ cut-up writings and surrealist film, as well as vintage Disney and Fleischer cartoons, acting as critical commentaries on the failures of capitalist utopias, blending nostalgic pop culture references with a satirical slant on modern society. Her work has been displayed internationally and featured in numerous magazines including Juxtapoz (her work has twice graced the cover), Rolling Stone, Flaunt Magazine, Nylon, Paper Magazine, The Los Angeles Times and Modern Painter, and is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Resnick Collection, and the San Jose Museum of Art, which held a retrospective of her work, entitled “Tragic Kingdom,” accompanied by a catalog of the same name. Garcia’s recent book, The Illustrated Alice in Wonderland (published by Harper Collins,) was a New York Times bestseller. Garcia recently moved to the Pacific Northwest after 38 years in Los Angeles.

DIV E RS E A R T L A DIVERSEartLA is back for the third consecutive year in a row with the LA Art Show as part of the fair’s special programming.
As an international art curator, my research mainly focuses on social and politically-driven changes in society and examines cultural exchanges that take place between theory and practice.
My interests and the breath and scope of my work show through and are reflected in DIVERSEartLA, which is dedicated to honoring and highlighting the vast cultural richness of museums and civic organizations from all over the world. But DIVERSEartLA also stands as a solid critical-thinking platform for the exploration and exchange of ideas at local and international institutions.
A project as ambitious as DIVERSEartLA has only been made possible by the incredible generosity of the fair, LA ART SHOW, which has donated 50,000 square feet to this initiative and brought together an engaging group of art institutions, foundations, collectors, curators and artists.
We are eternally grateful to this year’s participating artists, directors and curators from renowned institutions in the US and abroad, whose invaluable support and commitment has contributed to producing one of the country’s top contemporary art shows: Arte Al Límite Collection from Chile, CCK from Buenos Aires, Argentina (presenting installations by Marta Minujín and Andrés Paredes), LACMA, MOLAA, Launch LA, The Los Angeles Art Association, Art Share LA, MAC Salta, Rober E. Holmes Collection, Dorian Woods and Sarah Trouche.
Additionally, I would like to thank Katrina Fernández, with whom I have worked very closely on the production of this project and has helped me to materialize my artistic vision.
Finally, I would like to thank Kim Martindale for his unconditional support, exceptional leadership and for giving me, once again, the opportunity to be part of this formidable journey that I hope you all truly enjoy.

C C K , B UE N O S A IRES Located in the former Central Post Office building, with an architecture and size that are distinctive in the heart of the city of Buenos Aires, the CCK stands as an authentic “house of public content,” acting as federal, participatory space for plural thinking and interaction.
Its program, a multi-disciplinary proposal, that covers visual arts, music, theater, dance, children’s workshops, conferences and lectures, is always focused on the quality and diversity of experiences, ranging from a more traditional approach to more contemporary and avant-garde forms of expression.
The CCK became a platform to promote the exchange of ideas associated with art and culture, in order to consolidate itself as an active center for the construction of a collective culture, involving an increasingly heterogeneous public.
Launched in 2015, the CCK is the largest cultural center in Latin America. With more than 50 exhibition rooms, it covers approximately 15,000 square meters and features a Symphonic Room that holds up to 2000 people; 16 rehearsal rooms, a glazed dome with two terraces and a breathtaking view of the city.

A N DRÉ S PA RE DE S AndrÊs Paredes’s work ranges from drawings and two-dimensional cutting paper to immersive installations, and make up private collections in Argentina and in several countries abroad. He lives and works in both Misiones and Buenos Aires (Argentina). Memorable Mud is a participative installation that delves viewers into a multisensorial experience featuring scents, music - exclusively composed for this art work - and a carefully designed system reflecting light through translucent stones. The piece is the end result of an exploratory process that generates two experiences for attendees.

Andrés Paredes | Memorable Mud | Installation | 2017
The first experience begins as the viewer enters the room and comes across giant clay structures, clay domes with pinnacles and other elements, which hang from the ceiling down from a height of 1.4 meters. This landscape acts as a bubble of clay, which is retrieved from the production place. The domes have their own inner world –– one which can be accessed by the public through holes located in the lower part. This all acts as a place where the artist’s life and personal memories are stored and materialize in clay.

M A RTA MIN U J ÍN The CCK (Cultural Center / Buenos Aires, Argentina) is pleased to present renowned Argentinean artist Marta Minujín, who arrives at DIVERSEartLA with two of her most emblematic artworks: The Parthenon of Books and Rayuelarte. Marta Minujín (Buenos Aires, 1943) is a multifaceted artist and a highly emblematic figure of Argentinian art since the 1960s. Hailed as one of the world’s greatest pop artists, her work has been shown across continents and in countries all over the globe. The Parthenon of Books: The return of democracy to Argentina in December 1983 was the inspiration that led Marta Minujín to create a replica of the Greek Parthenon on the “9 de Julio Avenue,” a street located in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Parthenon has a metal structure covered with more than 20,000 books, many of which had been banned during the military dictatorship. The Parthenon of Books honors the world’s first democracy and the values of that era, which have served as the basis for today’s Western democratic societies. This work also stands as a symbol of the country’s prolonged need and renewed hope to transition back to democracy. Over time, Minujín’s throught-provoking work has become an icon of freedom of expression. In 2017, the artist was invited to present a new version of this project at the 14th Edition of Documenta, one of the world’s top contemporary art events that takes place every five years in Kassel (Germany). Her new work was praised and highly acclaimed by the critics, who saw in this powerful piece an emblem of democracy and global freedom.

CRISTIAN CASTRO
Cristian Castro, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1971 and currently based in LA, expresses his artistic talent by repurposing discarded vintage household appliances and old mechanical tools with contemporary designs of his own. In the 27 Fish installation, the artist used 1950s Johnson brand outboard motors for the main body, stainless steel cat bowls, kitchen hinges, nails for the teeth, electrical conduits, fiber glass, custom laser cut aluminum parts molded with a hydraulic press for the fins, and automotive paint with chromed and polished parts to create these hybrid creatures that appear to come from a 19th century vision of the future.
Very much like the Argentinian collective Center for Art and Communication (CAyC) in the 70s and 80s, the artist conceives his installations as a multidisciplinary space in which to explore the relationship between art, science, environment and society. The deep-sea fish in 27 Fish were created in a retro-futuristic style, incorporating kinetic movement and light.
Cristian focuses his art on environmental issues. Humans create their own realities based on an idealization of nature. The artist decontextualizes nature to recreate the reality we are facing today: ocean pollution, destruction of natural habitats, and uncertainty about the future.
The work of Cristian Castro is representative of the increasingly important position that contemporary Latin American art holds in the international art world.

For Bob Holmes who calls himself “a citizen of the world,” his art collection is a reflection of his life and times. The history of both colonial oppression by Europeans in Africa, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, and the history of slavery in the United States have created a warped perception of Black people as they have moved, or been forced to move, throughout the world. That perception has often created a narrow impression of Black people’s and other peoples of colors’ interests, limitations, possibilities and futures. Holmes says, “As one steps out of the manner in which he is perceived, challenges widely held perceptions about the Black body, travels throughout the world and accumulates broad interests, that accumulated knowledge and experience can lift one out of seeing and being seen in a purely racial context, while at the same time, standing firmly upon the foundation of one’s ethnic culture.” In Holmes’ particular case, those tenets have enriched his life beyond the prescribed boundaries of narrow perceptions and identity, and have led to a broad collection of art that reflects his appreciation and love of rich cultural identities of so-called ethnic categories. In his wide collection, we can find a diverse offering of cultures through artists such as Dan McCleary, Matsumi Kanemitsu, Derrick Maddox, Charles White, Romare Bearden, Gronk, Deni Ponty, Betty Parsons, Elizabeth Catlett, David Alfaro Siquieros and Aime Mpane, among many others.

Adah Glenn, also known as “AfroPuff,” is a Los Angeles-based artist, designer, and entrepreneur. Graffiti, hip-hop, punk, and rock, as well as Japanese anime, inform her work. Her practice is multidisciplinary, extending broadly from murals, paintings on canvas and shaped board, prints, art quilts, and books, to digital art and animation. Glenn has also ventured into the applied arts, creating wearable art, such as hats and jewelry, and toys, including fabric dolls and resin collectable figurines. Most recently, Glenn has embarked in performance art, that provides her an opportunity to integrate her many creative impulses.
Glenn’s art is vibrant and colorful, multi-layered, and highly textural. As an African American woman, she often interweaves themes of race and gender politics in her work. Adah Glenn: Boho Highs & Visual Drive-bys presents a wide selection of her many talents in many mediums. The exhibit not only celebrates ethnic and cultural pride, music, and the female form, but also features a selection of Glenn’s poignant social commentary works.

DORIAN WOOD
Artist Dorian Wood seeks to glorify both the sanctity and irreverence of intimacy. Through the use of their corpulent body and booming voice, Wood revels in challenging the artist-audience separation, using subject matter informed by their own position in society as a nonbinary person of color and an autodidact without a formal college education nor a strong alliance to any particular community. Their work has been showcased in concert halls and performance spaces around the world, including at such institutions as The Broad (Los Angeles), LACMA (Los Angeles), The Stone (NYC), MASS Gallery (Austin), Kulturhuset (Stockholm), and Hebbel am Ufer (Berlin).

P IN G P O N G Los Angeles Art Association is pleased to present Ping Pong, an independent exhibition project founded in 2007 to cultivate artistic interaction and exchange between selected cities Basel, Miami and Los Angeles. Artists working in a wide range of mediums and subject matter reflect the current cultural situation in the chosen cities. Ping Pong strives to show both the similarities and differences in the various cultural landscapes represented. While the artists represented in Ping Pong have shifted over the years and venues, the spirit of artist-centered collaboration and ambition remain intact. This iteration of Ping Pong at the 2019 LA Art Show will feature artists Pam Doulas, Jerry Haenggli Cathy Immordino, Sue Irion, Dan Künzler, Sungjae Lee and Elizabeth Tobias. Each artist’s singular vision is maintained while adapting to the aesthetic and cultural aesthetic imposed by their fellow artists. Sungjae Lee’s expansive piece Her Real Secret and Elizabeth Tobias’ performance Survivor! Share Your 98 Second Story are both timely reflections on the state of gender politics and identity. Pam Douglas and Cathy Immordino share a fascination with historical relevance but differ dramatically in execution and approach. Furthermore, Jerry Haenggli and Dan Künzler share a certain Swiss formality that approaches narrative with opposing emotive centers. This iteration of Ping Pong mirrors the commonalities and conflicts surging through our culture in 2019.

S . C . ME RO Art Share L.A. has partnered with skid-row based, emerging guerrilla artist S.C. Mero to bring a taste of the streets of Downtown Los Angeles to the LA Art Show. Embodying the nature of downtown, the onsite installation pieces are just a teaser to the larger site map of her work–which guides attendees into downtown to explore our community under the guise of a pseudo street art scavenger hunt. Each of her site-specific, clever creations calls attention to issues surrounding homelessness, gentrification, drug use, global warming, and more. The goal of this project is to encourage further exploration of underground art, arts activism, and social justice in the Downtown community in a way that is inviting and accessible for everyone.

ELIZABETH TOBIAS
Elizabeth Tobias will amplify her fusion of social practice, performance and sound to debut Survivor! Share your 98 Second Story at 2019 The Los Angeles Art Show. This immersive project addresses the sexual assault epidemic, one of the most pervasive, yet most underreported crimes. Survivor! addresses the staggering statistic that every 98 seconds, there is a sexual assault in America.
Weaving together spoken word and improvised sound, Elizabeth Tobias will perform with an ensemble of artist survivors to collectively promote needed awareness and advocacy for sexual assault survivors in the art community and throughout the public sphere.
Those victimized by violence often lack the support and resources needed to come forward. For artists who have been impacted by the trauma of sexualized assault, rarely, if ever, are there adequate opportunities to create work that addresses their stories within and beyond the larger art community.
Dr Jennifer Freyd, expert in the field of interpersonal violence, has identified that the act of speaking out has a measurable impact on decreasing violence. Consequently, the performance has the potential to directly reduce the statistics. Survivor! Share Your 98 Second Story is a ground breaking new performance that addresses trauma, courage and continuance.

This work is part of a project Hemisphere, created in Antarctica and generating a dialog on the geographical situation (hemispheres north & south) and of the mind (hemispheres right & left).
Antarctica is a radical environment and could be considered a geographic displacement. The hemisphere is presented as an undefined state where the body is situated as an idea of territory and landscape but also as a state of mind.
In the beginning this project consisted of researching the use of fresh water on the Antarctica bases, because Antarctica is the largest reservoir of fresh water on the planet, an ongoing interest of the artist. “To Make Water” is a phrase used by the people working on the base to describe the production of consumable water, because although it is the largest reserve of fresh water, it is very difficult to procure. “To Make Water” is a video filmed the day the members of the base attempted the extraction.

V I RTU A L F UT URE S : XR S HO WC AS E Virtual Reality is one of the most eagerly discussed topics in contemporary culture, yet many in the art world are only starting to consider its impact—aesthetic, technological, psychological, therapeutic, economic, and so forth. This year, DIVERSEartLA offers four VR experiences that demonstrate the range of practices and possibilities that are defining VR in 2019.
The tools for VR and AR creation and display—once the purview of engineers, available mainly in academia and the military—are now much more accessible to anyone with a story to tell: game designers, painters, screenwriters, documentarians, journalists, architects, choreographers, and many more. Often working collaboratively across several disciplines, this diverse community of creators is discovering the technology’s potential, involving audiences in the very act of creation. According to consulting curator Jesse Damiani, “The advent of mainstream immersive technologies is the single greatest amplification of human capability since the discovery of fire, a paradigm shift so massive we’ve only just begun to taste its impact.” Visitors to the LA Art Show’s DIVERSEartLA can get a glimpse of the future as seen by four different creative innovators: Wesley Allsbrook, Nancy Baker Cahill, Jorge R. Gutiérrez, and Drue Kataoka.
“Virtual Futures: XR Showcase” is held In conjunction with the exhibition “3D: Double Vision.” (Currently at LACMA, the 3D exhibition opened in July and remains open through March 31, 2019.

SARAH TROUCHE
Sarah Trouche is a French visual artist who uses performance, photography, video and sculpture in her practice. She uses her body as a social and political tool. Trouche’s work is centered around cultural and political issues such as migration and displacement, and invites us to question the major challenges we face today.
For the You Should Wear Your Revolution project, Sarah Trouche is committed to research on women’s emancipation, inspired by the history of France during the French Revolution and the movement of the “Sans Culottes.”
Sarah Trouche will perform using hundreds of underwear that she has collected, washed and dyed beforehand. Through this action, she imagines a manifesto around the notion of female emancipation, radical and collective.

B E N J AM I N S H I N E Award-winning artist and designer, Benjamin Shine has established a multidisciplined creative approach dedicated to challenging perceptions through original constructional ideas and craftsmanship. Following his studies in fashion design at Central St. Martins in London, Benjamin has spent over a decade exploring the potential of materials to express ideas through his artworks, public sculptures, fashion, furniture, and product designs. Benjamin is most known for his tulle works, which centre on ideas of impermanence, energy and the fleeting moment - each made by pleating and manipulating the delicate material into form with an iron and often generated from a single uncut length of tulle.
Benjamin’s work has been exhibited in galleries and international art institutions, including Opera Gallery, London, Paris and Monaco; The Museum of Arts and Design New York; The Goss-Michael Gallery in Dallas, Texas; The Crafts Council UK; The London Design Museum; and the iconic Lloyd’s Building of London. Over recent years, Benjamin’s work has been exhibited alongside eminent British artists including, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn and Tracey Emin. His 2013 fashion collaboration with Givenchy saw him develop his signature tulle technique alongside Givenchy’s Creative Director, Riccardo Tisci, creating a limited edition series, which blurred the lines between art, sportswear and Haute Couture. Most recently, Benjamin was invited to collaborate with John Galliano for Maison Margiela. The resulting work of couture was shown at Paris fashion week 2017 and received worldwide recognition as an iconic piece and is currently being acquired by one of the world’s leading

C H UN I PA RK Baik Art will be exhibiting works by Korea-based artist Chuni Park. Inspired by his environments and art-historical traditions, Park creates fragmented recollections of familiar landscapes, often sourcing from both memory and imagination. A rich assortment of symbolic motifs complement the artist’s stylized panoramas and provide glimpses into the painter’s worldly interpretations. “I gain much of my inspiration from traveling around the world, meeting people, observing fantastic landscapes, and marveling at the great power of nature,” he says in his artist statement. “I also, however, find beauty in what may be considered mundane aspects of ordinary life. Images from my past, often memories of performing these everyday actions, regularly find new life in my paintings. My landscape paintings embody this cross-section of my life and bring to life my traveling experiences.” Featured in the showcase will be Park’s large-scale, multi-panel installation titled, Black Landscape, which depicts the seasons in a traditional Korean ink derived from pine soot. The exhibition of this piece within the 2019 LA Art Show will mark the work’s inaugural debut outside of South Korea. In the months leading up to the fair, Park is also traveling through California and the American West, visiting national parks like Yosemite for inspiration. He will premier several new pieces inspired by his explorations of this unfamiliar landscape, joining iconic artists like David Hockney who have tackled similar subject matter. This comprehensive body of work will reflect Park’s first depictions of American topographies —opening new possibilities for his work and commencing a new chapter in his creative career.

E DG A R P L A N S One of the few things that I can say with 100% certainty is that I was born in Madrid in 1977. If I am asked when I started to paint or indeed why, well that’s something I can’t define so easily. I can say how and where, using pencils and crayons on every wall within reach, outside the house in Majadahonda, on the nursery walls and the pavements. The when is the most difficult, since creativity and the arts were always present and encouraged at home, my earliest memory is the sound of the my father’s typewriter (Juan Jose Plans, 1943-2014). In his office there was a low table with four chairs, and there I would sit drawing with my brothers while my father would write. I never faced any restrictions, only encouragement for my need to draw and paint. In fact when we moved to Gijón in 1985 I was put into a class…not because I wanted to but because my sister wanted to go and “useful” to have us at the same class. However I have never wanted to draw what other people would suggest. I liked to draw comic strips, short stories, not still-lives of bowls of fruit, nor charcoal sketches of plaster-of-paris figures….so I didn’t go much. It wasn’t until I was 15 when I decided to learn more. I don’t know why but I felt I needed to learn more disciplines and techniques. In the studio of José María Ramos I learnt to express what I wanted via painting and drawing. After two years in the workshop I realised that I wanted to not have anyone looking over my shoulder to correct and guide me through my faults, and needed to work alone and find my own ways. I rented a room in an art studio – previously an apartment belonging to Nicanor Piñole, an important asturian artist – and in that attic I began my own path. Currently I have my own studio where I continue to look for my own path, between my faults and truths. I’ve always liked street art. Urban art. It is an art that I see very free, just like when children create. And I have wanted to transform it to translate into my paintings. Currently I am internationally recognized for my characters, the Animal Heroes and my marked colorful, expressive and lively style.

G A B RIE L LA P O S S U M In Aboriginal life where people sleep under the stars with little shelter, the night sky is enthralling and dominating. The desert people are aware of nearly every star in the heavens and most of these stars have stories associated with their origins. All over Australia, it is believed that the stars and planets were once men, women and animals in the Creation Time, although the creation stories differ greatly between tribes.
The Milky Way with all its soft glowing stars and dark starless patches is a place with many landmarks for the Aboriginal people. The Milky Way is considered by the Aborigines as a visual representation of the microcosm within the self. Tracking the inner self is knowing the pathways of the Milky Way. Those pathways remain esoteric and can only be released by the artist during ritual.
The Milky Way is a sacred
residence for totemic beings.
The song lines of the Milky Way Dreaming have travelled from the far northern reaches of Arnhem Land down across the continent, through Central Australia and beyond. This is the story of the seven sisters. They were the mythological sisters of the Tjukurrpa. Today they can still be seen wandering across the skies at night as the constellation Pleiades.
A Jakamarra man, (The Morning Star in Orion’s belt), is pursuing seven Sisters (the cluster of seven stars in the constellation Taurus, known as Pleiades).
The story
tells of the women who, in a final attempt to escape Jakamarra, turn into fire at Kurlunyalimpa and ascend the heavens to become stars. This Dreaming is closely associated with men’s secret sacred ceremonies. The colours in the painting reflect the night sky with its brilliant glowing stars.

CHA, YUN SOOK
The tradition of Eastern calligraphy, both in practice and medium, has profoundly influenced modern and contemporary “Korean Abstract Art.” For instance, Dansaekhwa is a style of ‘Korean Monochromatic Painting’ that became prominent in the 1970s. It uses paint or ink-wash to create a surface that enables the viewer to transcend the mundane. Furthermore, this influence continued to become integral, inspiring the younger generation in their painting methods. The main mediums of the traditional eastern ink painting consist of Hanji (rice paper), brush, inkstick, and inkstone. Inksticks are mainly made of soot and animal glue. The colored pigments that are derived from vegetable dyes and mineral ingredients are all made from natural organic materials. Cha, Yun Sook (b. 1971, Korea) has worked in the style of Korean ink painting for many years and is now taking a new approach to this tradition with her indigofera tinctoria (jjog in Korean) dying method on cotton, linen or silk. Cha, Yun Sook creates her artworks as a way of paying homage to Nature. Acutely aware of our civilization’s disregard for Nature, Cha expresses her gratitude for Nature through the mark making process of ink on Hanji paper and textile. She also celebrates Nature through performance by dressing others in clothes dyed with ink imbued with healing properties meant to lift the wearer’s spirit. “Homage to Nature” is her debut show in Los Angeles. Cha cherishes her love for Nature through her work and ritualistic performance, and shares her eastern philosophies with the West, the art community in Los Angeles.

More than 10 years ago, when I began using the computer to paint, print and display art, I was exposed to a sharp division between likes and dislikes among art critics. To some, my work was interesting and very appealing. To others, it was so embarrassing that it made them wonder how printed cartoons could be art and they directed hate speech towards me. Since I have exhibited extensively and through various experiments, I will show my new works which combine my paintings and the masterpieces that are said to have a universally accepted quality of beauty. I will attempt to bring new life to those famous paintings - rebirth them as my new works of 2018. I am very interested as to how the viewers will respond to the combination of my images superimposed on the famous oil paintings using computer-based mockup and printing technology. Will they be able to acknowledge them still beautiful because they still retain the so-called universal beauty in spite of the added prints or cartoons? Will they criticize that the latter is not art? The discussion provoked will in itself make this exhibit a great success. I as an artist am thrilled to take this opportunity to wake up those great paintings in history from a hard sleep at museums and summon them to the LA Art Show 2019.

MIK E S T ILK E Y
Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey is an internationally recognized artist who has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. He is best known for creating small and large-scale installations that use discarded books as their canvas. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales. A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer into their introspective thrall with a mixture of capricious poetry, wit, and mystery. His work is reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism and his style has been described by some as capturing features of artists ranging from Edward Gorey to Egon Schiele.

EMMANUEL BOOS
Emmanuel Boos (b. 1969, St. Etienne, France) lives and works in Paris and in Mannheim. For the French artist Emmanuel Boos, glaze is more than ceramics. It is a form of poetic space at the same time as glaze. It is also a form of certainty and uncertainty in the creative process. He systematically collects and arranges color palettes with each mineral mixture, but he admits that the coating is blindly applied. He explores the unpredictability by paying attention to the physical and chemical phenomena that go into high-quality ceramics. For him, this process is a game in which the winner is the winner of chance. By presenting the deflection, deformation and textural change of the sculpture, the result is a solid block set called a monolith.

RIS K
Beloved LA graffiti artist RISK makes his LA Art Show debut with two sculptures from his ongoing “Shark” series that has evolved to explore predators in their many forms. One of the most talked about sculptures of 2018 was his bisected police cruiser, an actual cop car dipped in formaldehyde and sliced open “like bacon,” revealing the vehicle’s inner workings. In the LA Art Show exhibition, this controversial piece will be juxtaposed with a similar sculpture of a shark comprised of spare machine parts. Inspired by Damien Hirst’s “Natural History,” the pairing are a commentary on how police “patrol the hood like sharks.” “Embrace what you fear” is an idea that stems from Buddhist teachings and RISK’s bisected cop car was the surprise outcome of a meditation on this principle. The project actually began as a sculpture of a shark and metamorphosed into a different kind of predator, complete with its own version of telltale fins, shape and color palette. Across from it will be the finished sculpture of the shark he originally intended to create—a predator from a different era that still strikes just as much fear.

SCOTT HOVE Scott Hove returns to the LA Art Show this year with this museum-scale wall installation, The Best Days of Your Life, an Atlas. Formerly known for the first large scale archway at Littletopia and then for his widely acclaimed cake-themed mirror infinity chamber, Scott is presenting a more detailed and crafted wall piece that will illuminate minds and the immediate space.
For this piece, he has used a more painterly approach to composition, and has applied multiple illumination points to provide a sense of radiant heat and fantastical texture to engage viewers in a very active way.
The 36 gallons of acrylic “frosting” create a compelling illusion of imminent satisfaction, and a re-imagined and idealized contextualization of personal memory. For much of Scott’s work, artifice serves as a medium to support a fantasy narrative that can seem at once safe and inviting, and then questionable and menacing.
Scott currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

S I M O N E PH E UL PI N Born in 1941, Simone Pheulpin is a French textile sculptor who lives and works in the Vosges.
Her works are the result of an instinctive expression that uses both the suppleness and firmness of an untreated, natural material, a simple nonbleached cotton.
From her fabric strips and thousands of pins, a veritable vocabulary of forms and shapes with an organic allure, a supernatural world where surprising rocks and the seabed take form, sprung from her spirit and guided by her hands.
For Simone Pheulpin, a fundamentally atypical textile sculptor, folding is a language, her language. Her strips of raw cotton, tirelessly stacked, twisted and connected, produce organic sculptures that reflect Simone Pheulpin’s intense, deep, astonished perspective on nature and convey her view of the world with infinite poetry.

LEE LEENAM
Lee LeeNam’s (b.1969) Tang Dynasty Beauty (Beautiful Woman), Velazquez (5min) is a digital reinterpretation of classical masterpieces that reveal nature’s wonders and life’s aura; he attempts to breathe new meaning and vitality into each pixel of image. It also seeks to communicate with the public in a close manner with his stories in the works, and to communicate various messages such as life value and happiness. His work is also famous for “five minutes’ aesthetics,” which stops a piece from being published for more than five minutes. Among others, his work is included in the collections of Incheon International Airport, National Library of Korea, United Nations headquarters in New York, and numerous prominent museums such as the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Suning Art Museum and the Zebrastraat Museum in Belgium.
Through the changing clothes of the royal lady in Tang Dynasty and the princess of Velasquez, it shows the intercultural communication. The artist transmits the crossover of eastern and western, moved by numbers of ants with their own will, creating a new, and unnoticeable, flow.

We Are Animals is an educational project with the aim of making people aware of the protection of the species. The series is formed by a total of 22 works, among them are the two main figures, each 69 x 47 inches. The 2 pieces are oil on methacrylate, one with closed eyes is painted on transparent methacrylate with a golden background of 15,000 bullets; this work represents the destruction and blindness of humanity regarding the disappearance of the species. The other is the same size and the same format; the figure has open eyes and a background of golden tree leaves, this represents protection.
The central pieces are the ten animals chosen to represent the ten animals with the most danger of extinction, each measuring 14 x 20 inches. Each animal is painted in oil on methacrylate with a text on vinyl and each of the animals explaining scientifically where they live, those that remain, and what led each species to the danger of extinction.
Under each animal there are ten other pieces where the world map is marked to show the area each animal inhabits. Each of these pieces measures 6 x 18 inches.

the basis for much contemporary works in the region. Ink is as synonymous with painting in the East as oil is with painting in the West. From traditional and historical,
to contemporary, to avant-garde, these eight galleries offer us an opportunity to appreciate the rich spectrum of ink painting styles.

E A S T A RT C E N T E R From China, Beijing’s East Art Center spotlights a handful of leading artists who, in various ways, incorporate the techniques of calligraphy into their pieces. Bian Hong is a pioneer in the New Abstract Calligraphy movement originating in China. Her work subverts the Chinese artistic convention that calligraphy is more important than visual painting, and in her work, she approaches them as equivalent. The result is neither painting nor calligraphy, but a different creation altogether; pulled from modes of Chinese tradition and Western aesthetics and abstraction. Li Huichang is a master in oil painting, ink arts, and calligraphy, and has enjoyed a prolific career in China. His works feature his mastery in ink, creating mysterious and ghostly images through traditional techniques such as po-muo (splash ink). Due to its difficulty to master, he is one of the only artists to continue practicing this technique. In Realm, Fan Peng’s body of work is a ritualistic comment on, and response to, the natural chaotic and social forces that shape much of the world. Li Zhihong uses traditional Chinese ink as his medium to present viewers with his inner perception of life, which he perceives as consisting of particles.

Reiko Tsunashima has exhibited all over the world, and is best known for her body of abstract landscape Scene of Sumi, which she characterizes as a true collaboration with nature. M IC H A E L G O E DH UI S Ink paintings emerged 1000 years ago from calligraphy: the sublime and central achievement of China. Calligraphy is executed in ink on silk or paper, with a brush. In order to master this brush on the absorbent paper, which tolerates no error or correction, the artist has to achieve a high degree of concentration, balance and control. Painting is an extension of the art of calligraphy. It is therefore, like calligraphy, linked to the sacred prestige of the written word. Michael Goedhuis, who was the first dealer in the west to recognize the significance of these radical innovations in Chinese culture, has concentrated on identifying the artists who are in the process of shifting the axis of Chinese aesthetics.

The Art of Excellence Art & Antiques is tailored to readers who are actively involved in the international art market. Our editorial policy places special emphasis on the interests of the serious art aficionado—a collector whose passion is acquiring and living with art, antiques and highend collectibles. Our internationally recognized writers, many of whom are experts in their fields, speak with the voice of authority as they explore the significance and nuances of masterpieces that span the history of art and design—from ancient to contemporary. In our fourth decade, we will continue to provide our readers with insight into connoisseurship, sophisticated analysis of the global art business and lively, critical essays.
