Traditional Thangka Art Exhibition
Thangka is one of the most precious treasures of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. It is the traditional Buddhist scroll painting and also an important symbol of Tibet culture. In recent years, Thangka has become a focus of collectors from home and abroad because of its distinctive cultural value. It not only implies a concept of art, but also reveals a kind of faith and spirit of Buddhism.
Chinese Classical Mahogany Furniture Exhibition Regions south of the Yangtze River, especially Suzhou, are the birth place and main place of production of Chinese Ming-style furniture. Suzhou style mahogany furniture inherits the exquisite tradition of Ming-style furniture. Especially in recent centuries, Suzhou style mahogany furniture has become the superior household products in China. TRADITIONAL THANGKA ART & CHINESE CLASSICAL FURNITURE
44
Traditional Thangka Art
Thangka is one of the precious treasures of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. It is the traditional Buddhist scroll painting and also an important symbol of Tibet culture. In recent years, Thangka has become a focus of collectors from home and abroad because of its distinctive cultural value. It implies not only art concept, but also reveals a kind of faith and spirit of Buddhism. During this exhibition, we try to present various kinds of Thangka to satisfy different audiences. For example, the Guan-yin of Thousand Arms, White Tara, Sakyamuni Buddha and Yellow Jambhala are all the popular themes of Tibetan Buddhism. Above all, these works of Thangka are all from outstanding painters. We believe it would be a good chance for collectors to find wonderful works of Thangka.
Chinese Classical Furniture
Because of the difference of nation, custom, climate, technique and so on, Chinese classical furniture forms a special Eastern furniture system differs with Western furniture. Regions south of the Yangtze River, especially Suzhou, are the birth place and main place of production of Chinese Ming-style furniture. Suzhou style redwood furniture inherits the exquisite tradition of Ming-style furniture. Especially in recent centuries, Suzhou style redwood furniture has become the superior household products in China. Moreover, the Beijing style furniture produced in the place near Beijing will show a different art style with Suzhou style furniture. Beijing style furniture is noble and solemn. In the exhibition, the Beijing style furniture will present the concept of classical Chinese household products.
45
Thangka’s art skill is the most exquisite among traditional Chinese paintings. The procedure of making Thangka contains complicated steps, such as making the canvas, planning the composition, finishing the line drawing and so on. Every piece of Thangka needs long time of hard work and pious attitude to accomplish. Some of them even take years to finish. The whole image of a piece of Thangka is glorious and exquisite, people have to use magnifier to see the details.
In addition, the pigments of Thangka are all made from valuable materials such as natural minerals, gems, gold, deer antlers, pearls and so on. After choosing best materials for the color, the Thangka painters need to grind these materials into fine and smooth powder through handwork, so that the colors of Thangka are brilliant and durable. Such feature of pigment makes Thangka attractive and charming.

New NY rules could protect authenticators ■ Suggested changes aim to discourage lawsuits against views expressed in good faith Alex Capon reports LEGISLATION designed to protect art authenticators from lengthy and expensive legal claims has been proposed in New York. The bill, which seeks to amend the state’s art and cultural affairs law, is designed to discourage lawsuits against those who authenticate works of art in good faith and enable them to recover their expenses in the event of an unsuccessful claim. According to The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, who have recommended the proposed legislation,
the changes would “address certain deficiencies” in the current framework and would protect “authenticators in rendering independent, goodfaith opinions about the authenticity, attribution and authorship of works of fine art”. Earlier this month the bill was unanimously endorsed by The New York Senate Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and it will now move forward for consideration by the full senate. The legislation comes at a time when the role of authenticators and authenticating bodies has been brought into focus following the demise of several artists’ authenticating boards over the last few years. These include, most prominently, the Andy Warhol Foundation in 2011, as well as the Keith Haring Foundation and Jean-Michel Basquiat authentication committee, both in 2012.
Art Deco classics ring a bell DESIGNED and manufactured by the Siemens factory in Woolwich from 1929, the 200 Series dial telephone (aka the Neophone) is today considered an Art Deco design classic and the first truly modern telephone. Standard issue black versions, rented en masse to customers by the General Post Office, will now command two- and three-figure sums depending upon type and condition. But those encased in ivory-coloured plastic (typically urea formaldehyde for early models and acrylic for later ones) are harder to find in good order while the small number in ‘jade green’ and ‘lacquer red’ are a different commercial proposition entirely. Handsets in these two special colours attracted a substantially increased subscription cost at the time, enough to make them something of a novelty, even before most phones of this type were discarded or replaced as obsolete in the 1960s. The pair of red and green 1950s-era Neophones seen at Richard Winterton of Lichfield on May 2 were both in very good condition and sold with matching bell sets (the separate pedestal unit to make them ring), a combination collectors know as ‘king pyramids’. These models also included the small exchange drawer in the
