Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome all attending the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show. Florida is proud to host this event, which draws visitors from throughout the United States and around the world. As you enjoy the show, our scenic beauty, and friendly businesses, I also invite you to learn more about what we are doing to make Florida the best place for businesses to succeed. As a lifelong entrepreneur, I understand what it takes to grow a business. That is why during the three years since I took office, we have reduced the size, cost, and scope of government in order to expand opportunities for entrepreneurs, and Florida’s increased rate of private-sector job creation indicates that our strategy is working. To that end, I am focused on three goals for our state: making Florida the No. 1 place for businesses to succeed, keeping the cost of living low for families and businesses, and making sure our schools prepare students for the career of college of their dreams. As a result, Florida’s economy is moving in the right direction because we have the right strategies in place. You have my best wishes for a memorable and successful show, and I hope each of you will visit Florida often. Sincerely,

Rick Scott Governor

Dear Guests of The Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antique Show, It is a privilege to be invited by Scott Diament, President of the Palm Beach Show Group, to be the charity partner of the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antique Show for the third consecutive year. I am so pleased that our HOPE Designer Showcase has become a creative highlight of this most successful event. I founded Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) seven years ago to fund cutting-edge research in depression and its related mood and emotional disorders. Over 18 million Americans have depression and the creative community is especially vulnerable. Studies show that the incidence of depression in all areas of the arts is significantly higher than in the general population. From the start, HDRF has recognized this fact with the formation of its Arts Committee, a group of leaders from the visual, performing and decorative arts who lend their time and talent to help advance the HDRF research mission. Once again this year, six renowned interior design members of the HDRF Arts Committee have created an extraordinary HOPE Designer Showcase under the direction of Scott Snyder, HDRF’s Palm Beach Chair. They have selected art, furniture and accessories from all the exhibitors and created room settings that incorporate these objects to show their versatility in a variety of design trends. The Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antiques Show is the largest vetted show in the United States. It has become an annual Presidents' Day tradition and draws local visitors as well as national and international collectors from many corners of the world. We are proud of our dynamic partnership with the Show, and hope you are inspired by the creative vision of the HOPE Designer Showcase. With best regards, Audrey Gruss Founder and Chairman

An Italian Renaissance Hand-and-a-half Sword circa 1490–1500 Niccolò Machiavelli, in his celebrated political treatise The Prince, completed by him in 1513 and eventually published in 1532, wrote in the opening lines of his dedication to Lorenzo di Piero de’ Medici (1492–1519):

Those who strive to obtain the good graces of a prince are accustomed to come before him with such things as they hold most precious, or in which they see him take most delight: whence one often sees horses, arms, cloth of gold, precious stones, and similar ornaments presented to princes, worthy of their greatness. Article By Peter Finer

O

ur magnificent sword is one that would undoubtedly have been deemed ‘worthy of the greatness’ of any of the Renaissance princes. ‘As in all other fields of applied art,’ observed the late Dr John Hayward when writing of it some years ago, ‘the high point of hilt design, either as [a] ceremonial or fighting weapon, was reached during the Italian Renaissance in the fifteenth century.’ ‘The excellence of the weapons of this period’, he went on to note, ‘is reflected in their superb proportions and exquisite decoration.’ Few could deny that our sword, with is elegant lines and rich ornament arranged in counter-changed panels of contrasting gold, silver and gilt copperalloy, fully satisfies both of these criteria. Although it must be seen as likely from its superlative quality that our sword was intended primarily for ceremonial use, its design nevertheless accords in all essential respects with that of a practical fighting weapon. With its long hand-and-a-half grip enabling it to be wielded with either one or two hands, and its long, acutely pointed blade, our sword was suited to both cutting and thrusting. The pronounced medial ridge running

down each side of the blade served to stiffen it in order that it might more readily penetrate any gaps that were to be found in the full plate armour favoured at that the time. Ridges of this kind appear to have come into fashion around the middle years of 15th century, being found, for example, on the blades of several swords recovered from the River Dordogne near Castillon-la-Bataille, where they had been abandoned by English troops fleeing the victorious French army in 1453. From the evidence of such contemporary representations as those that appear in the illuminations of Tallhofer’s Fechtbuch of 1459, in the library of Schloss Ambras, near Innsbruck, and in a painting, The Coronation of the Virgin, in the Museo Civico, Pesaro, by Giovanni Bellini, of about 1474, it would seem likely that blades of this medially ridged pattern were very soon afterwards being fitted to the hand-and-a-half version of the type under discussion. Interestingly the illustrations just mentioned in both instances represent swords with hilts similar to that of our example excepting only that their pearshaped pommels are formed with transverse belts rather than flattened faces. Although it is unclear whether

19

their long spatulate quillons are horizontally recurved in the manner of those of our sword, the fashion for such recurved quillons was nevertheless to become a popular one in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Surviving early Renaissance swords of a quality comparable to ours are few in number and invariably associated with persons of great wealth and rank. Among the most celebrated of them is a splendid sword in the Rüstkammer, Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden (no. hm.a36), identified in early inventories of the Saxon Electoral Armoury as that of Graf Leonhard von Görz (1440–1500). Aside from the fact that its pommel is of plummet-shaped rather than pear-shaped form, it shows a strong general resemblance to our sword. The presence on its blade of the inscriptions jesus maria and in eternvm, has led to the suggestion that it might perhaps have been given to von Görz at the time of his marriage to the Mantuan princess, Paola Gonzaga, daughter of Luigi III Gonzaga in 1478. Whether or not that is the case, it seems certain from its association with von Görz that the sword should be dated to a period before the time of his death in 1500. Of perhaps even greater interest in this context is a splendid sword now in the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer, Vienna (no. a.170) made for Maximilian I, King of Rome and later Holy Roman Emperor (1459– 1519). Aside from its possession of a key-shaped pommel and straight rather than recurved quillons, it once again bears a striking resemblance to our sword. Its hilt, also of gilt copper-alloy, bears the inscription in dio amor which together with the representations of Amor and putti in the decoration of its blade has led to the suggestion that the sword was given to Maximilian at the time of his marriage to Bianca Maria, daughter

20

21

of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza of Milan in 1493/4. The possibility arises in that case that the sword was made in Milan, then the greatest of all European arms-producing centres. Affording support for that view is the fact that a sword in the Museo Civico L. Marzoli, Brescia, very similar to ours other than in its possession of an elaborately chiselled pommel with scrolled margins, was stated by Hayward to be struck on its tang with the Sforza mark of a viper. Significant perhaps, is the decoration of the so-called ‘Martelli Mirror’ in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (no. 8717–1867), which like that of our sword involves gilt copper-alloy inlaid with silver and gold, and is thought to have been produced by the Milanese artist Caradosso Foppa (1452–1527) around 1495–1500. Through a combination of their skill and inventiveness, the goldsmiths of Renaissance Italy brought to the decoration of arms a richness and vigour that clearly accorded with the spirit of the age. More than in any other period, the nobleman of the Renaissance, with his passion for pageantry and display looked to the contemporary craftsman to provide him with arms that could compete with or even exceed in splendour those of his political rivals. The quillons of our sword, like its pommel, are divided into panels of various metals: seven on one face and five on the other. The plaques are either chiselled in relief or engraved intaglio with conventional floral ornament. Each side of the cross is chiselled with the same plaited design as the edge of the pommel, while the tongue or langet, which was intended to cover the mouth of the scabbard, is chiselled with acanthus foliage issuing from a scallop shell and fleur-de-lis at its base. The purpose of this socket was the practical one of preventing water from seeping into the scabbard and so rusting the blade, should the sword be exposed to rain or condensation. Hayward, in his assessment our sword, observed that although having affinities with that of Leonhard von Görz at Dresden, it excels it in richness and is the equal of the wedding sword of the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. It is tantalising, given its opulence, to speculate upon the identity of its original and obviously wealthy owner. Its elegant lines and rich ornament, coupled with its harmonious proportions make it a true masterpiece of the Renaissance: bella e graziosa – beautiful and gracious. The Life of a London Antique Dealer

article by Ian Butchoff, Butchoff Antiques, London

An Exhibition Quality Centre Table in Thuyawood By Holland & Sons

T

he life of a London Antique Dealer swings between the glitz of the antique shows – London fairs such as Masterpiece, Lapada and Olympia, to the repetitious searching through catalogues, both in print and online, looking for my next must have purchase; disseminating daily phone calls from private houses extolling that they have the Crown Jewels of an item they are interested in selling to me, and gazing from my showroom door at the rain splattered street wondering when, if ever, the weather will clear and our

next new client will walk through the door. If you were looking for a secure and certain way to make a living then this is not it. If however the excitement of knowing the chase is on for a “sleeper” (an item at auction that is mis-catalogued or has been estimated well below its true value), or you feel the sheer pleasure and satisfaction of purchasing something so unique it is almost impossible to price - a craftsman made item in which hours of toil and trouble has been employed, then the life of an Antique Dealer may be for you. 23

My father David was a silver dealer and founded Butchoff in 1964. This year is our 50th anniversary and I hope, if he were still around, that he would be pleased with where our business now stands. Before I reached my teenage years I was travelling around the country to markets and auction houses with my father and he started to teach me how to hone my “eye”. I have now been joined at Butchoff by my two nephews Adam, (here for twenty years), and James Kaye (a mere fledgling at ten years) who both bring their individual talents to bear. We truly are a family business and pride ourselves on the excellent customer service

Before I reached my teenage years I was travelling around the country to markets and auction houses with my father and he started to teach me how to hone my “eye”. that we build with our long term clients all over world. An “eye” is something that takes years to obtain – it is an innate understanding of the aesthetics of what is before you, the quality and style of a piece, its inherent beauty and integrity. How does one develop this “eye”? There is only one simple answer – do your homework: study, read, go to museums, visit auctions, country houses, antique fairs and dealer’s shops. Ask questions and handle things and in 5 to 10 years it should start to come – simple as that! My passion became furniture and initially I sold within the trade. As the years have passed I up scaled the level at which I was buying and believe that we now hold one of the finest collections of what is known as Exhibition Furniture – that is of a quality worthy to have been exhibited at International shows around the world commencing with the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, in the UK. We have 18th and 19th century furniture, chandeliers, mirrors,

clocks, and decorative items – between our showroom and four warehouses you name it, we may well have it. We have had royal pieces – an oak gothic library table by Pugin and an Amboyna centre table both from Windsor Castle, letters from Queen Victoria to her Commissioner at Balmoral, a silver gilt Christening Cup given by George III in 1773 to his godson. Unique pieces such as the Hausberg Cabinet - a marquetry masterpiece that took a German émigré 17 years to make just for the pleasure of it and with which we were thrilled to have been awarded the Antique of the Year by our peers, and an enameled Viennese Neff by Herman Bohn who was the ultimate goldsmith and enameller of his time. The list goes on. One of the ways we source our stock is by trawling the Internet, which is a very slow and laborious process that only occasionally reaps results. A few years ago, Peter, my researcher, alerted me to a seventeenth century French Cabinet on a Stand that was to be sold at auction the following week, in a sylvan corner of England’s green and pleasant land. The auction house – no Christie’s or Sotheby’s - operating from an unprepossessing ex-agricultural building in the middle of farmland normally handles antique items from the lower third division, bankrupt stock, and household clearances, and, in this particular sale, as well as the cabinet, there were the contents of a defunct toy shop, including over a hundred lots of Matchbox toys, Barbie dolls, and Star War figures. The cabinet was probably the best piece the saleroom had ever, ever handled. Of considerable size, it was constructed in carved ebony, (the French term for a skilled cabinet maker, ‘ebeniste’ derives from this root), and similar cabinets are to be seen in Windsor Castle, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Louvre, amongst others. We were truly excited as

we thought we had discovered a “sleeper”. The cabinet was estimated by the saleroom at £10-15,000, a figure, from our point of view, a fraction of its true worth. Personal inspection was necessary; with questions such as was the stand contemporary with the cabinet? Had alterations or adaptations been made? Were the hinges, locks and handles original? Was it of the period? How were the proportions? The colour? The quality? Was it a ‘looker’? And, finally, what was it worth? Peter and I arranged with the saleroom for a private viewing before the official view day, thus avoiding the melee that invariably occurs on viewing days, and most importantly, to have uninterrupted inspection. Armed with torches, since this saleroom was dingily lit, and magnifying glasses, we set off early on the four hour drive to the saleroom. The cabinet did not disappoint. It was a jewel of Parisian cabinet making, and, surely by the eben-

iste to Louis XIVth. Bearing in mind that ebony was an expensive raw material, even nearly four centuries ago, and only a very skilled worker would have been permitted to carve it, there was no doubt that is had been made for one of the great and the

good of the period, and if we bought it, would also require further research. The discussion between Peter and me on the return drive to London was nothing less than very animated, we had surely found an elusive “sleeper”. A week later, on the sale day, we returned to the well attended saleroom, finding the only seats available happened to be next to a life size model of a Silverback gorilla, which regarded us with disinterest and more than a little disdain. Peter observed we had found ourselves next to a lucky mascot, which we ought to own, and I told him he should take more water with his whisky. The sale commenced, and at once we were into the Barbie dolls and Star Wars models, the auctioneer extolling their possible worth when we were all dead and gone. Bids of a £5 were notable. Peter was deeply immersed in the Times crossword, surfacing only to put his hand up to buy the gorilla for £50, claiming the gorilla was

At that point, a man I had not noticed before who looked rather like a local farmer and was standing behind a pillar, raised his paddle. now the official Butchoff mascot, and, having Mr Gorilla with us, how could we fail? So, the three of us waited with anticipation for lot 267, the cabinet. It was now on the block, and suddenly the auction woke up. Saleroom assistants appeared with mobile phones, the auctioneer asked if the internet bidders were all on line, and smirked as three important dealers from London and the Continent entered the room. Bidding started at £10,000, went quickly up to £50,000, and then started to pause. Encouraged by Peter and Mr Gorilla, I joined in the bidding, and quickly found myself bidding £90,000. At that point, a man I had not noticed before who looked rather like a local farmer and was standing behind a pillar, raised his paddle. Eventually after some excited bidding between the two of us I reluctantly put down my hand as I had bid more than I intended, and it was knocked down to him for £120,000, which when the auctioneers buyers premium had been taken into account amounted to nearly £150,000. A not insubstantial amount for a cabinet estimated at just £10,000 – some sleeper indeed! Feeling very deflated and defeated, we paid for our purchase and strapped

him unceremoniously into the backseat, ready for our long journey home. As we pulled away from the auction room I swear I heard the Gorilla utter with a sneer in his voice “you should have kept bidding”. We are hugely excited to be exhibiting for the first time here at Palm Beach and have brought with us a selection of furniture by both the premier English makers – Gillows, Holland & Co, Hamptons and Sons, and also the very top Continental names such as Picard, Fourdinois and Dasson. We look forward to meeting you and making new friends from across the pond. If you

should find yourself in London, do drop by and say hello. You are assured of a very warm welcome. n

Chinese

Contemporary Ink Art: Why Buy Now?

C

Chinese ink artists are profoundly relevant to contemporary Chinese society but until recently have been largely neglected by curators and critics alike with prices therefore undervalued. They are important as representing the link between China's great past and the galloping pace towards her future. Their work incorporates a deep understanding of classical Chinese culture which they believe to be essential in their quest to create a new pictorial language which expresses the fundamentals of today's world. I believe therefore that the new generation of collectors in China and the diaspora will look at this area of the art-market as the most significant contemporary manifestation of Chinese civilization, with all that that will mean for price levels. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND China is the oldest surviving civilization on earth and it is our contention that Chinese contemporary ink works, from calligraphy and painting to photography and video, express the continuation of this vast past in ways which are meaningful for society today both in China and the West. Visitors to China today will have noticed that, unlike in India, virtually no

historical monuments, let alone country houses, literati pavilions or even old villages, still exist. The architectural heritage of the past has been extinguished and now we are only left with what has been built in the past 100 years or less. This is a phenomenon virtually unique to China and is relevant to why the moral and spiritual life of the Chinese became embodied, not in their material heritage, but principally in works of the written word… in calligraphy and painting. This dissolution of China's architectural legacy is not just due to the ravages of 28

her many violent dynastic conflicts. Much indeed was destroyed by the Taiping insurrection in the mid-19th century and even more devastation was inflicted by the Cultural Revolution, during which many cities lost almost every historic and cultural relic forever. But the main reason, unlike in monuments from ancient Egypt to the modern West which were built to last, has been the perishable and fragile materials used which decay rapidly and require frequent rebuilding. The reason why this is pertinent to our study of contemporary ink art is that we have to understand that in Chinese society it has never been the survival of monuments that has counted... it is the survival of a 'past of the mind… the only truly enduring embodiment of eternal human experience are LITERARY ones'… as F.W. Mote has so eloquently expressed it. CALLIGRAPHY: THE SUBLIME AND CENTRAL ACHIEVEMENT OF CHINA It has been almost impossible until recently for westerners to grasp the significance of calligraphy for the Chinese. It has been the foundation-stone of their society since the dawn of civilization. As Simon Leys has written ‘it is the most elite of all

Our view can be summarized in the following points: A. Ink painting and calligraphy is the supreme art of China. B. As such it has had enormous prestige not only for the educated elite but also for the Chinese in general. C.

The Chinese are deeply sensitive to the loss of much of their cultural heritage extracted from them by the colonial powers in the 19th century and are now aggressive buyers.

D.

The exponential increase in wealth allied to an annual proliferation of new museums can only lead to an intensification of buying, and contemporary in China, as in the rest of the world, is... or will shortly be... cool.

E. Ink art is the quintessential art-form of Chinese civilization and its contemporary version, rooted in works of unquestioned virtuosity and quality, will provide the new buyers with a foothold not only in what is fashionable but what is meaningful as a continuation of the vitality of Chinese culture. F.

Finally leaving aside the all-important China factor, it is evident, as we see in the current museum programs and auction-house initiatives, that ink is attracting the attention of both in a big way, with all that implies for its new status in the art-world at large.

arts… practiced by emperors, aesthetes, monks and poets' throughout history but also ostentatiously alive today in advertisements cinema posters, restaurants, teahouses, railway stations, temples and on rough peasant village doors and walls. The original purpose of Chinese script, which goes back c.3700 years and appears on tortoise shells and shoulder-blades of oxen, was to forecast all major decisions of state: harvest and hunting, war and peace.

Right: Wei Ligang Along the Vivid Outlines of the Aged Ridge, a Wild Stream Splashes and the Deer Flee in Shock, 2011 Ink and acrylic on paper Each panel: 96½ x 48½ in (245 x 123 cm) Left: Qiu Deshu Fissuring - landscape, 2012 Acrylic on xuan paper and canvas 71½ x 71½ in (182 x 182 cm)

Gradually however, from the latter part of the Han period (3rd century AD), its original purpose was eclipsed by a growing interest in its aesthetic character and in its role as a conduit for the calligrapher's individual creativity. And from then on it became the most important of all the arts, with painting as its intimate but subservient partner. Calligraphy is executed in ink on silk or paper, with a brush. In order to master this brush on the absorbent paper, which tolerates no error or correction, the artist has to achieve a high degree of concentration, balance and control. It is these qualities, allied to intuition and intelligence, that make his art, like the other three major arts of china, painting, poetry and music (of the 'Qin' or zither) one of interpretation. In this respect the calligrapher can be compared to the pianist who interprets the composer but whose every touch, like every brush-stroke by a great calligrapher, becomes an extension of the interpreters mind. Although calligraphy became the preeminent and elite art of China, with its masters, critics, connoisseurs and collec-

30

tors, it has also been practiced for hundreds of years by literally millions of Chinese for whom it is a method for achieving the harmonious integration of mind and body, the key to supreme enlightenment. But as its high status evolved, it was its indissoluble association with the scholargentleman and his mastery of the art that established it as manifesting the core concept of Chinese civilization… HARMONY… whether it pertains to the structure of society or to the individual's alignment with the universal rhythms of the universe. And so it became the purpose of civilized man, of the gentleman, to become part of the dynamic rhythm of creation and to contribute to the coherent ordering of society. So this elite of scholars became perhaps the most cultivated elite the world has known... intent on practicing the arts of calligraphy, painting, poetry and music in order to realize their own humanity by cultivating and developing the inner life. The rich intellectual and spiritual life of these literati has been captured in many enchanting paintings depicting their gatherings in shaded garden pavilions, drinking wine,

composing poetry, practicing and enjoying calligraphy and painting, as well as refining the art of convivial conversation. PAINTING Painting, together with calligraphy, poetry and music, constitutes one of the four key traditional arts of China and is an extension of the art of calligraphy. It is therefore, like calligraphy, linked to the sacred prestige of the WRITTEN WORD. One's first encounter with a Chinese painting will immediately betray its literary nature. Unlike a western painting that hangs on a wall, the Chinese work is mounted in the form of a scroll, which by its nature is related to the world of books. It belongs to the realm of the written word. A further distinction that has made it difficult for western art lovers to fully appreciate Chinese painting is that the Chinese is simply not interested in transcribing or depicting reality. His objective is rather to 'write the meaning of things’… to express the IDEA. Thus the role of the painting is to incorporate the minimum visual codes or clues to inspire its full and invisible fruition in the viewer’s IMAGINATION. Again, the Chinese aesthetic is very different to that of the West. The prime purpose for the scholar is the cultivation of an inner life, the ultimate aim of which is to perfect one's character in order to attain the moral stature befitting one's status as a gentleman. Thus the notion of beauty as such is irrelevant, indeed is often considered to be a superficial distraction from the purpose of nourishing the energy of the gentleman in capturing the spirit or essence of nature. In fact the ultimate 'beauty' of a work does not depend on its beauty. It is the result of its inner 'truth' and it is this moral concept that is at the heart of all Chinese aesthetics. The above background is I hope helpful in coming to understand that art for the

Chinese is part and parcel of their concept of morality and of how to live ones life and how to order society. And it is the written word (the word in ink) that is the binding agent constituting the continuity of the revered civilization and essential for understanding Chinese society past and present. CONTEMPORARY LITERATI ART: INK ART The successors of the gentleman-scholars described above are today's ink artists. They are deeply aware of the classical canon and its aesthetic and moral imperatives and have carefully studied the old masters. However, just as Picasso and Cezanne studied Raphael, Poussin, Velasquez and others in order to create THEIR revolutionary pictorial language, so the new literati are doing the same in order to formulate their own revolution for their work to be relevant to, and meaningful for, the world of today. And revolutionary and culturally subversive it is. More subtle than the contemporary oil painters with their abrasive handling of overtly political themes, the ink painters embody their revolutionary message in works that are not afraid to take account of the past in order to make sense of the present. Very many different stylistic approaches have therefore evolved over the past 30 years. Works now range from those that at first sight look quite traditional but in fact embody powerful fresh aesthetic initiatives by artists like Liu Dan, Li Xubai, Li Huayi and Yang Yanping, to those that are unambiguously avant-garde seen in the works of Yang Jiechang, Qiu Anxiong, Qiu Zhijie and others. But all of the best contemporary practitioners have a common purpose… to create works that do not jettison the great cultural legacy of the past in formulating a language that addresses the intellectual cul31

tural and social issues of today. It is our view therefore that these few (only 50 or so of international stature) artists are poised to assume a historic relevance as the cultural conduit between China's great past and her future. And as such they are likely to shortly become the target of the new generation of collectors and museums in China and the diaspora who, in their new-found national pride and following the global fashion that only contemporary is cool, will be hungry for contemporary manifestations of their country's enduring civilization. THE MARKET We have been collecting and dealing in contemporary Chinese art since the early nineties and have increasingly focused on ink works which until recently have been largely neglected by curators and critics and are still commercially very undervalued. Contemporary Chinese art, including ink painting, was a niche product from the early nineties to 2004 when an explosion of interest from a small but intense coterie of buyers emerged from first Europe and then America which drove prices to five times their then value in three years. Ink painting was part of this movement but rose much less dramatically in price, yielding popularity to the oil painters' titillating political themes that attracted a somewhat gullible western audience. Many of the minor stars in the latter field have witnessed a sharp fall in their prices due to a belated re-evaluation by collectors and of course to the economic crisis, which affected western buying. Now however, as the art-market regains momentum and connoisseurship becomes more mature, there is a growing groundswell of interest in ink art both because of its inherent quality and because of its relevance to the society of China today and by extension to the art-world in general.

The three major auction houses in the West and the two leading houses in China are all now involved in creating specific ink art sales platforms… both via conventional auctions and private treaty sales. This is a new and significant development which is allied to the series of ambitious ink exhibitions that have been taking place in western museums over the past two years (MFA Boston, British Museum, Musée Guimet, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and others, with a major initiative INK ART at the Metropolitan Museum in December 2013). All of this has of course begun to affect price levels and now, for a handful of artists (Liu Dan, Li Huayi and Xu Lei are examples), prices are hitting the hundreds and thousands of US dollars. But the remaining best practitioners, of whom there are only approximately forty or so in the world of recognized international stature, can still just be acquired for $100,000 downwards. It is worth noting here that this generations' ink painting predecessors… artists who have died in the last few years… are now fetching up to $50 million at auction

in China, where the demand for modern ink painting is reaching ever new heights.

are therefore appropriate for market development. He now works in London and internationally to expand his

CONCLUSION As stated in the beginning of this brief survey, we believe that it is almost inevitable that the new generation of Chinese museum and private art-buyers, fuelled by increasing wealth and renewed national pride, as well as the for them aggravating competition from the exhibitions taking place in WESTERN institutions, will shortly turn their attention to this quintessential current manifestation of Chinese civilization. And this will have a dramatic effect on the price levels of the relatively few works of art produced in any one year by the handful of ink artists that can be ranked as world-class. He now represents many of the most promising emerging artists as well as the most established masters. The current program concentrates on promoting the best Chinese ink painters working throughout the world today. The culmination of these early pioneering years was the exhibition he organised with Sotheby’s in New York in 2001. The last landmark exhibition, now focusing on Chinese Ink Painting, took place at the Saatchi gallery in London in 2012 and included most of

The Mar-a-Lago Club: A Palm Beach Icon for the Ages

Article BY AMY WOODS • photography by jerry rabinowitz

T

he crescent-shaped casa that has stood as a symbol of Palm Beach prestige since 1927 remains a timeless treasure and an idyllic icon – as well as a popular place for pampering, partying and playing. The magnificent Mar-a-Lago Club’s architectural achievements nearly 90 years ago have received more ink than Taliesen West, and its high-end standard of service resulted in the Six Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. Its exquisite array of accoutrements, including a 16th-century Belgian tapestry, Capodimonte porcelain chinaware from Italy and a gold – yes gold – “thousand-wing” ceiling that towers temptingly over the luxurious living room make Mar-a-Lago a museum. “Only I have to tell people we are not a museum,” said Bernd Lembcke, managing director of the private club.

Known as “the jewel of Palm Beach,” the club also embodies a richly rooted history that began in 1923, when the wife of E.F. Hutton commenced construction of the castle on a piece of Florida scrubland. Five hundred connoisseurs from 50 countries enjoy the privileges of membership at the exclusive enclave, a number that has increased from the 150 who belonged when Lembcke first started. Mara-Lago, Spanish for “sea to lake,” offers acres of amenities from its pristine parcel between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

Known as “the jewel of Palm Beach,” the club also embodies a richly rooted history that began in 1923, when the wife of E.F. Hutton commenced construction of the castle on a piece of Florida scrubland. Post worked with Joseph Urban, a Viennese architect, Marion Sims Wyeth, a South Florida architect, and Franz Barwig, a sculptor whose elaborate and intricate models leap from the structure, on the overall design. She shipped in three boatloads of Italian stone for the curved and arched exterior – and its 75-foot tower – and acquired 36,000 Spanish tiles to add to the clever and creative craftsmanship. In 2013, the Florida chapter of the American Institute of Architects put The Mar-a-Lago Club on its “top-10” list of beautiful buildings. An impossibly heavy cast-iron door leads to the front foyer, and thick, dark cypress-wood doors lead to the four corners of the living room accented by wide

glass windows and a uniquely hooded fireplace. Now covered by carpet for safety, the floor of the main dining room comprises black-and-white marble from an old Cuban estate. The artifacts, finery and furniture found in Mar-a-Lago have such significance and style, the Smithsonian Museum should show them off. “When Trump bought the home, he paid $2 million for the inventory,” Lembcke said of famous owner Donald. The amenities the club offers begin with breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared to European perfection and served in the decadent dining room, the comfortable cloister and the tented tea room. From the bacon-braised osso bucco served with saffron polenta, to the appropriately named Trump chocolate tower, to the Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët and Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Mar-a-Lago’s epicurean engineers cast off culinary delights designed to stimulate all the senses. The Beach Club, accessible via a stone sidewalk that leads to an underground tunnel traversing A1A, offers members a modern mecca of sun, surf, sand and swimming. Trump, who purchased the $9 million mansion in 1985, envisioned an elaborate, edge-of-the-world environment paying homage to the ocean. In 2002, he opened the 5,000-square-foot cabana- and lounge chair-surrounded pool and beachfront bistro. The Trump Spa and Trump Salon purvey personal pampering amid a suite of nine private treatment rooms. Those who indulge will find themselves in the remarkably remodeled laundry facilities of Mar-a-Lago matriarch Marjorie Merriweather Post’s staff. The Trump Fitness Center occupies the former butlers' and maids' quarters, and the men's and wom-

Five signature red-clay courts nestled in the scenic southwest corner of the property make The Mara-Lago Club a natural choice for those who play the sport. The well-maintained, beautifully colored surfaces, the quality of the instruction by pro Rob Goetz and the investment Trump made in the program earned the club the Private Facility of the Year Award from the Professional Tennis Registry. British tennis legend John Lloyd and U.S. ATP great Vince Spadea also teach at the club, accentuating its allure. “The addition of these world-class players has added another dimension to our program and heightened the awareness to excel,” Goetz told the Palm Beach Daily News after hearing about the honor. “The tennis participation has become more social, and the members also derive enjoyment from inviting their friends to experience the courts.” A lush, lavish lawn on the ocean side of the property serves as the site of competitive croquet, a game that continues to gain participation and grow as fast as any other professional sport in America. Once the pastime of English aristocracy, croquet has evolved since the mid-19th century and offers several levels of play. No. 1-ranked John Osborn heads the

fairway-esque field and its top-of-the-line mallets, balls, wickets and flags. “We are basically a full, elegant mini-resort,” Lembcke said. “We have the beach, we have the lake, the only thing we don’t have is golf.” The glorious Gold & White Ballroom underwent a renaissance in 2005 for the purpose of housing charity balls, celebrity affairs and decadent dinners. In December, the gilded great room welcomed guests to the “Lady in Red” gala benefiting Lois Pope’s LIFE organization, the Renaissance Dinner for Autism supporting the Autism Project and the Making Cancer History Award Gala funding the MD Anderson Cancer Center. “We have one charity event after the other,” Lembcke said. “There’s probably 100-plus.” The celebrity affairs have ushered in such talents as Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion and Elton John, Paul Anka, the Beach Boys and Diana Ross. Oprah Winfrey brought Maya Angelou there for the poet’s 80th birthday. “We have incredible events in the ballroom,” Lembcke said. The 20,000 square feet of interior space drips with Louis XIV gold and sparkling crystal finishes, while the exterior conforms to the original Moorish design of the mansion. A state-of-the-art industrial kitchen caters all of the events and passed probably the toughest test of time when The Mar-a-Lago Club recreated the 1867 Dinner of the Three Emperors. The original feast of 17 courses featured some of the finest champagnes of the period. Discerning guests can join The Mar-aLago Club for $100,000, with an annual fee of $12,000. An Exquisitely Detailed Gold & Garnet Document Box Date: 2nd - 4th Century CE Size: 10” Assembled

Making utilitarian objects into works of art appears to have been a passion for the elite of ancient Eurasia. This fanciful artifact is a prime example, turning a simple two-part container into an elaborate and rather realistic looking carp. Each of the fins is detailed with wire, in imitation of the bony ridges seen in the living fish. Hundreds of individually cut sheet gold scales have been soldered, one at a time, to the body of the fish, giving the surface a naturalistic texture. Rough polished garnet inlays form the eyes, which are set in bezels of twisted wire filigree. Even the gills are accented with a line of filigree, separating the smooth head from the scaled body. Some theorize that it was used as a document box, to send important messages between kings in Central Asia.
