In preparation for spring, Farmer Shane and Farm Assistant Wyatt invited members to pick the last of the winter produce. Between visiting members and the culinary team, the garden was completely cleard of kale, turnips, and herbs.
Shane and Wyatt have been working tirelessly to rejuvenate the garden in anticipation for planting. They have laid down new mulch and used their tractor to cover the mulch with drip tape to water plants and cover the new garden beds with black plastic. This process “helps with weed suppression, moisture control, compaction of the soil, and nutrient retention” explains Shane. “The plastic also keeps the soil hot, the hotter the soil the faster the plants will grow.” In total, there will be just over two thousand plants growing in the garden this spring, not including the rows of sweet corn. This will make for an abundant summer in terms of produce, “June is the prettiest month on The Farm, everyone needs to come out and see it”.
The chicken coop has been put together, and the next step in construction will be adding a fifteen-foot run for the chickens. “This will connect to the end of the coop so the chickens can come out and play. We plan to incubate about sixteen chicken eggs and five or so duck eggs until they hatch. The incubation period is a two-month process, and they will stay in the shop until they are old enough to be transferred into the coop.” The Farm will have a variety of Plymouth Rock chickens, New Hampshire Reds or Rhode Island Reds, and Leghorn chickens. “We may have a few unique looking chickens in the mix too.” Both the ducklings and chicks are expected to hatch late spring into early summer.
“June is the prettiest month on The Farm. Everything is so green, everyone needs to come out and see it.”
— Shane Rahn Farm Manager
In a survey on gratitude in adult professionals, British psychologist and wellness expert, Robert Holden, found that 65 out of 100 adults selected happiness over health although they indicated that both were equally important for a good life. Holden and his studies suggested that the roots of many mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress are unhappiness. The problem is we can go an entire day feeling unhappy. The one bad day can turn into a week, the week can turn into a month, and the month turns into a year. Unhappiness can take over.
Time and time again, I meet people who are frustrated with their job. Giving their lives to something they are not truly passionate about. The demands placed on them by their work culture are high, the hours are long, and they brush their personal life to the side. One of the other obstacles, we will all face (if you have not already) is worrying about our family. For example, taking care of a parent or spouse is hard and it can take over one’s world in a heartbeat. Since we love our family, we will do anything for them, which inadvertently leads to a consistent drip of anxiety, worry, and stress. We stop putting ourselves first when we need to. We become unhappy.
The last example is waking up each day and feeling uncomfortable in your body. Asking the question, why can’t I just be in shape like I was a few years ago? I used to feel good, but now when I look in the mirror, I don’t like what I see. My confidence is lost. I am not happy.
Now, whether it is our work, family, or self-confidence all these things might lead to unhappiness. Just like you, I am not always happy at work or with my family. Just like you, I have days when I look in the mirror and don’t like what I see. But just like you, I have so many things that I can be grateful for, that I should be grateful for.
The message today is simple. It is not happiness that brings us gratitude. It is gratitude that brings us happiness. We must always remember this fact in times of unhappiness. Gratitude gives us more vitality, energy, and enthusiasm and we can use gratitude to get an advantage. We can channel it daily and reflect often on what we are grateful for. Secondly, it is important to note that the connection between gratitude and happiness is multidimensional. By expressing gratitude not only to others but also to ourselves brings positive emotions and what we are all after, happiness.
The final reminder today is said best by author and speaker, Zig Ziglar, “gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you are to have even more to express gratitude for.

What fish can we catch in the spring months?
“In April, May, and end of June we’ll have a large influx of Cobia coming in. In may, we might even see some Tarpon rolling in depending on water temperatures. The Redfish, Trout, and Flounder are going to continue to bite as well. The fishery gets a little bit harder as the warm weather comes in because the fish become more solitary, they’re not reliant on each other for warmth anymore like in the fall and winter.”
What is the ideal time to go fishing?
“I personally prefer getting out early in the morning because I don’t have to compete for attention or spots with other fisherman. Early morning and late afternoon lowtides are the best times.”
What is the ideal weight of the line for fishing this spring?
“What we use is a medium-heavy rod, seven foot in length, a 2,500 series reel, with a twenty-pound braided line, down to a about a twenty-pound fluorocarbon leader. The Wilson Landing team is available for individual advice, members are also welcome to attend our Bass Fishing Seminar hosted in the Conservancy Classrom in Moreland Village on Wendesday, April 12th.”
What do you typically use for bait?
“Shrimp is tried and true, that is everyone’s favorite bait. I personally use mud minnows because they eat the eggs of Redfish, Trout, and Flounder, so instinctually you get fast, heavy bites. Shrimp is a more savored flavor resulting in a slower, softer bite.”
How do you find a great fishing spot?
“Honestly, so much goes into finding an ideal fishing spot. The captains are here to be a resource in locating a sweet spot for shrimping, crabbing, oystering, and fishing. We highly encourage members to also compete in our Bass Fishing Tournament for more educational opportunities with our team. For example, Deb Watkins, I took her fishing for the first time ever when she first moved here, and now she’s catching fish every single day.”
Marina Director, Stephan Szymanski, and the Wilson Landing team share a strong passion for the waterways that create such a unique coastal lifestyle here at the Bluff. “You can really get lost in areas that are isolated, serene, and untouched. We like to take the time to teach our members about the little nooks and crannies of the May River. On the river you can find Speckled Sea Trout and Flounder in pockets and estuaries raising their young. Same with dolphins, this is a huge breeding ground for the Dolphin migration throughout the year. With all the twists and curves in the back marsh creeks, it makes for a perfect feeding ground with deep water holes of juvenile fish and shrimp.”
For Palmetto Bluff members planning to attend this year’s RBC Heritage Tournament or Bluffton’s annual Mayfest, Wilson Landing is offering an exciting opportunity to show up in style on the 36’ Hinckley Picnic Yacht, Miranda, and additional Boat Club vessels. “It definitely beats traveling by car. Going by boat is opting for a scenic route on the marsh with no worries about traffic or parking” shares Stephan. To learn more about the Boat Club or member offerings at Wilson Landing, please call the Harbormaster’s Office: 843.706.5468.
During the early spring and the late fall, the Lowcountry waterways experience extreme low tides falling below sea level because of the moon phase. “I couldn’t believe what Tom and Andrew found on our last Shark Tooth excursion. Members found over 200 teeth, and Andrew found a near perfect megalodon tooth.” Stephan explains during the excursion, members are taken down the Savannah River to Shark Tooth Island. This island is a result of dredging the river to deepen waterway access to the Savannah port. All the material, or spoils, from dredging collect together to form a rich archeological site perfect for finding hidden gems like cannon balls, pottery pieces, and fossilized shark teeth.
The Children & Family department, also known as PB GO, is proud to share the newly branded program offerings available to members. These programs all share the overarching goal of enriching the lives of children and families while growing outdoors at Palmetto Bluff.
PB Root: The root of a plant provides water, nourishment, and life just like our parents. PB Root is a support group for our parents of Palmetto Bluff. They are the foundation of children’s lives and ultimately the foundation of PB GO.
PB Sprout: As the root provides nourishment and life to the plant it will soon sprout and see the world from a new perspective. Our 5-8 year old members are curious and excited to experience life as they begin to discover who they are
PB Tide: The tide is constantly changing and adapting to new obstacles everyday. A tide is not freeflowing and is directed by nature. PB Tide encompasses the creativity, growth, and change in our 9-12 year old members. .
PB Indigo: The indigo plant thrives in the sun. Although it requires some space and freedom to grow, it also needs to be positively influenced by its surroundings. Our 13-16 year old members deserve a community here at Palmetto Bluff and this is the perfect group to ensure that happens.
PB Evergreen: The Evergreen plant is steadfast, bright, and resilient. PB Evergreen will be a community for our members with disabilities. Our PB GO team wants to adapt to needs in a way that is specialized for every member. This will be a place for inclusivity, adaptation, and community.
Director Lexi Yager reiterates, “If there is ever an activity that you know your child would enjoy, but they do not meet the age range please reach out to our team and we can further discuss if the specific activity would be a good fit. We never want a child to miss out on something they would enjoy as we are working to build a stronger community amongst programs with more age-appropriate activities.”
“With our programs growing quickly, we brought another amazing team member on board. Megan Feist is our new attendant and will play a huge role in our department. Megan has worked with kids for years and has already helped enhance our space. Loni and I are so excited to welcome her to our PB GO family.”
- Lexi Yager, Director of Children & Family ProgramsIf your child is attending Camp GO, or may potentially attend this summer, a parent must complete one of the camp orientations that will be held on Wednesday, May 31st, Thursday, June 1st, and Friday, June 2nd from 5-6:30pm. During orientation the PB GO team and counselors will review expectations for the summer, new implementations, and overall camp offerings. It is highly encouraged for parents to attend orientations in-person, however, there will be a live zoom webinar for those who are unable to attend. Please contact Lexi directly for zoom access.
To learn more about summer camp and program offerings, please opt-in to the the PB GO monthly newsletter by selecting PB GO under the Special Communications section within profile preferences on the member website.

Starting this spring, our Executive Pastry Chef, Jae Newby, and her team will have fresh breads and savory pastries available daily at RT’s Market. “We’re going to have baguettes, loaves of bread including sourdough, multi-grain sourdough, pecan, wheat bread, marble rye with a pumpernickel swirl, and we will also have fresh-baked pastries in the morning.” Artisan pastries include but are not limited to red velvet croissants filled with cream cheese, pecan sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, pumpkin cinnamon rolls glazed in caramel, raspberry cheesecake cookies and coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, and banana nut muffins.
“The pastry choices are endless, anything is possible here at RT’s.”
— Jae Newby Exectuive Pastry Chef
Along with the pastry team’s daily offerings, Sous Chef Sarah Humphrey will be crafting homemade pasta for purchase. Using the Jemma from the Arcobaleno collection, a new countertop pasta extruder and mixer, Sarah can make up to twenty pounds of pasta in just one hour. For a more bite-size batch, she can create delicious, vegan pasta with three simple ingredients - flour, water, and salt in as little as three to five minutes. Once the pasta is pulled from the extruder - whether it be Bucatini, Shells, Mafalda, or one of the 150 other forms of pasta Jemma can make, it is then collected and dried overnight. Once dried, the team carefully packages the homemade pasta and stocks the shelves of RT’s. “Moving forward we definitely want to offer a variety of beet pasta, kale pasta, spinach pasta and other produce we collect from the farm” Sarah shares.
“We’ve heard from our valued members, and we want to create an elevated experience at RT’s with artisanal offerings produced in-house.”
— Mike Gardner Director of Retail Operations
You’ll likely find Jim Lauderdale making music at any given time, whether laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. “It’s a constant challenge to keep making better and better records and write better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys, released 34 full-length albums, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted WagonMaster Award. Jim will be joined by fellow songwriters Verlon Thompson and Lillie Mae to bring the magic of music’s written word to Palmetto Bluff.
