PALMETTO BLUFF CLUB

November & December 2024 | Volume 7, Issue 6

Palmetto Bluff Members,

As we approach the end of 2024, I want to thank you for another year of continued support of the Palmetto Bluff Club. Our entire team is incredibly grateful for your involvement and constructive feedback. For those who will spend their holidays here on property, we have planned several activities for you and your families to enjoy this Thanksgiving and Festive season, and we look forward to seeing you there.

In this edition of Palmetto Bluff Club Living, you can read more details about our upcoming Thanksgiving events, such as our Family & Friends Flag Football Tournament, Thanksgiving Riding Camp, Thanksgiving Pickleball Mixer and Tennis Clinics, an Italian Feast, and of course, our Feast at Cole’s on Thanksgiving day. Transition into the Festive season with our Lighting of the Village event, where we’ll enjoy a tree lighting ceremony and live music to get into the Festive spirit. We are excited to have a packed event calendar leading up to Christmas, including the Holiday Boat Parade, Nutcracker Tea Party, Ugly Sweater Pickleball Mixer, 12 Days of Christmas Workouts, and and Polar Express Experience. End the year at our nightclub-themed end-of-year celebration, Club PB, featuring a balloon ball drop to ring in the new year.

This edition’s feature article is on a local hero, Admiral Phil Anselmo, who had an inspiring career in the Navy, serving on 240 combat missions and leading thousands of crew members. He and his wife, Mrs. Diane Anselmo, retired at Palmetto Bluff and have been living here for eight years.

Whether you’re spending it here or somewhere else, we hope you have a great end of the year.

Sincerely,

Fitness & Wellness

Hack Your Hormones

Have you ever been caught putting down your hormones? As we get older, it’s easy to put down your hormones. In fact, it’s human nature. It’s not uncommon to feel like the messengers in our body are letting us down. We feel like the correct instructions once received by our brain and organs are out of balance. Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and wellness advocate once said, “When my hormones are balanced, I feel like I’m on top of the world. But when they’re out of sync, everything feels harder.” Can you relate?

Hormones are powerful — they control almost every function in our bodies, from sleep to digestion to mood, which makes understanding the role that hormones play in aging, stress, and weight management very important. We all deserve to know how to address the function of our hormones naturally. What are the regular routines that drive the balancing of our hormones? How can I make my hormones work for me versus against? Here are three key hormones influenced by your physical activity and fitness:

Endorphins

Have you ever experienced “runners high” after an aerobic workout? Classically, when we raise our heart rates for defined periods of time, we receive a rush of “feel good” endorphins post-workout. By regularly participating in aerobic exercise, we have the ability to improve our mood, energy levels, and trigger prolonged feelings of positivity. To reap these benefits focus on developing a routine of aerobic exercise three to five days per week of sessions lasting twenty to sixty or more minutes.

Cortisol

Stress is bad, mitigate it at all costs. There was a time when we educated everyone to fear the stress hormone cortisol, however it is not an inherently “bad” hormone and should not be viewed in this context. Moderate exercise helps us to regulate cortisol and reduce stress; yes, it aids in reducing stress, that’s not a typo. Intense or prolonged physical activity temporarily increases cortisol levels as part of our body’s natural response. Cortisol is key for recovery, energy, and our overall mental well-being. To reap its benefits, focus on doing the right amount of exercise and integrate fitness recovery practices such as stretching, myofascial release, yoga, and breathwork two to four days per week for at least twenty minutes.

Growth

The only way to build muscle is to train and contract it. Our dietary protein consumption only aids in its development and maintenance. Exercise, especially strength training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), stimulates the production of growth hormone which is crucial for our muscle repair, fat metabolism, and overall tissue growth. To reap the benefits, focus on performing foundational strength exercises two to three days per week for thirty or more minutes.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH & APPLE SOUP

We recently hosted a Healthy Cooking Demonstration at Buffalos led by our Executive Chef, Beth Cosgrove, and Registered Dietitian, Lindsay Ford. Members left with recipes that were both healthy and delicious. Try out this recipe from the demonstration!

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil

1 Butternut squash, large, roasted (flesh & seeds removed)

1/2 gallon Vegetable stock

1 Fuji apple, peeled, cored, and chopped Kosher salt to taste

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Cut butternut squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds.

2. Roast the butternut squash on a baking sheet, skin side up, for 40-50 minutes (add a little oil to the top of the skin before roasting). Allow to cool then remove the flesh.

3. Add the vegetable stock to a large pot. Bring to medium high heat/bring to a simmer. Once warm, add the butternut flesh squash.

4. Add the chopped apple then allow everything to simmer until the apples are soft.

5. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup. Strain the soup if desired. Garnish with creme fraiche or sour cream, balsamic reduction or additional chopped apple & chive. Serve in a deseeded & roasted acorn squash if desired.

Behind the Bluff Podcast

What if neglecting mobility and stretching is the reason you’re not achieving your fitness goals? In a recent episode, Jeff Ford and Kendra Till dive into this often-overlooked aspect. Using relatable analogies like comparing your body’s mobility to a computer’s battery, they underscore the importance of keeping our bodies ‘charged.’ Plus, drawing parallels to a pebble in your shoe, they explain how ignoring minor stiffness and pain can lead to bigger problems down the road. A Hero of the Bluff: Rear Admiral Philip Anselmo

As Veteran’s Day approaches, we would like to honor all the heroes who have served our country and highlight Rear Admiral Philip Anselmo, a resident at Palmetto Bluff, who had an impressive career serving in the United States Navy.

Rear Admiral Anselmo enlisted in 1962 after he was drafted into the United States Army and instead wanted to serve in the Navy. His career quickly jump-started as he was commissioned as a Naval Flight Officer in a Navy Fighter aircraft in 1963. He was assigned to VF- 31 aboard the USS Saratoga in 1964, flying as the radar intercept officer in the F-4B. Following a Mediterranean Cruise, he was transferred to VF- 151 aboard the USS Constellation for a combat cruise to the Gulf of Tonkin flying strikes and combat patrol missions over North Vietnam. He returned to San Diego in December of 1966 for assignment to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 4 located at Pt. Mugu, California. There, he was a project officer and developed “Counter Tactics For Surface-to-Air Missiles,” as well as contributing to the development of air-to-air tactics against MIG series aircraft.

In October of 1969, he was assigned to VF-213 aboard the USS Kitty Hawk for a second tour in Vietnam, returning in April 1971 and reporting to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He then served as the F-14 Program Manager at the Naval Air Test Center Patuxent River, Maryland, from December 1972-August 1974. From August 1974 to August

1976, he served as the Aide to Commander Sixth Fleet in Gaeta, Italy aboard the USS Little Rock, participating in the re-opening of the Suez Canal and the evacuation of Lebanon. Following refresher training in the F-4J at VF-121 in San Diego, he was assigned as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VF-154 aboard USS Ranger until December of 1979. This was followed with Command of VF-121 based at Miramar, California. Upon completion of this tour, he was assigned as the Executive Officer of USS Constellation until June of 1981. During this deployment, the Carrier Battle Group was assigned off the coast of Iran for the hostage crisis. In 1985 he was assigned as Commanding Officer of USS Kansas City and then in May of 1987 he was transferred and assumed Command of USS Constellation. During this command, the Constellation provided the critical air cover for the “reflagged tankers” in the Straits of Hormuz providing combat patrol between Iraq and Iran. Following the tour on USS Constellation he was promoted to Rear Admiral and is the first Naval Flight Officer to achieve this rank.

A graduate of TOPGUN, Naval Test Pilot School, Rear Admiral Anselmo holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in Systems Management, and has over 3500 flight hours in F-4 and F-14, 1000 carrier landings, and 240 combat missions. His personal awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (4), Meritorious Service Medal (5), Air Medal (15), and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” (5). Other awards include Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2), Navy Achievement (3), National Defense Medal, and other commendations and Vietnam Campaign ribbons.

Following retirement from the Navy, Rear Admiral Anselmo worked for Northrop Grumman, Baltimore in C4ISR and Space Systems as Director of Marketing, retiring in 2006. He has also served as a board member of the National Correlation Working Group, National Academy of Science/Navy Studies, and the Navy Space Panel.

Rear Admiral Anselmo says that if he had not been drafted into the Army, leading him to join the Navy, he would have been a teacher. In a way, he fulfilled that dream as well, having led thousands of crew Members on several missions, always valuing positive and encouraging mentorship. He now resides in River Road here at Palmetto Bluff with his wife, Mrs. Diane Anselmo, with whom he has two children, Christopher and Elizabeth, and a grandson, Jake.

Mrs. Anselmo shares Admiral Anselmo’s same passion for the United States Navy. She is so proud of everything he’s accomplished and is still amazed by the stories he tells about his time serving. They’ve lived here together for eight years, and are happy to be settled in the Lowcountry after many years of vacationing here. “Nothing scares him,” says Mrs. Anselmo when asked about her husband. “He’s the best person I know — he’s my hero.”
