Palmetto Bluff Club
Letter from the Director of Operations
Palmetto Bluff Members,
It is hard to believe that Spring is coming to a close and summer in the Lowcountry is right around the corner. The year is off to a great start, and we are looking forward to a full schedule of events and activities in May and June at the Bluff. Some highlights over the last few months include the opening of Crossroads, the successful start of monthly Buffalos Brunch, and the beginning of the annual event calendar which featured numerous Easter activities along with wine dinners and more.
In this issue of Palmetto Bluff Club Living, you will find a variety of happenings such as Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day weekend, FLOW FEST, and Mother’s and Father’s Day. You will also see that June marks the start of CampGO, Palmetto Bluff’s summer camp for ages 5-14. Please carefully review the active schedule of events across the property and sign up when registration opens 30 days in advance for those of interest to you.
We officially restarted the Longfield Stables Trail Ride program at the end of December. Since then, numerous improvements have been made that will benefit Members, guests, and the horses. Under the leadership of Julien Beaugnon, Equestrian Director, and Bella Urie, Trail Program Manager, many hours have been invested in creating another amenity we hope Members and guests will enjoy. Read more about the program in Saddle Up: Exploring Longfield Stable’s Trail Ride Program.
Thank you for your support as we strive to exceed member expectations. Your feedback is always welcome in support of our goal to build positive relationships, and enrich the experiences of Palmetto Bluff Members.
Sincerely,
Kevin Rhatigan Kevin Rhatigan Director of Operations Palmetto Bluff ClubWelcome to the Club

What’s Growing at The Farm
Summer Harvest Season
May and June are the prettiest months at The Farm, with plants and flowers in full bloom. With the rain of the spring season bringing nutrients, the plants are almost ready for harvest. At the end of May, sqaush, zucchini, and cucumbers will be ready to pick and available at the Farmers Markets. Soon after in June, tomatoes and peppers will also be ready for picking. The Palmetto Bluff Club Chefs go out to The Farm daily during this season, to pick the freshest harvest to serve to Members. You may notice a variety of Farmer Shane’s vegetables and herbs available on Club restaurant menus.
Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt also added fourteen new garden boxes that will hold herbs like cilantro, oregano, parsley, basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, and sage. Garden boxes help with drainage and weed control as they have confined borders to protect plants.
Farmers Market
The Palmetto Bluff Farmers Market is returning to The Farm starting May 22. Last year marked the first full season of markets featuring a variety of vendors in partnership with Lowcountry Made. Members can enjoy a taste of summer with delightful culinary creations from the Pametto Bluff Club Chefs, fresh bread and bakery items from the Palmetto Bluff Club Pastry team, and live music. Come and support local growers and vendors who will feature everything from fashion to treats for your furry family members, or homeade soaps and candles. A few vendors who will be in attendance on May 22 are Petwants Hilton Head, Wandala’s Lowcountry Sugar Scrub, Lowcountry Fresh Market, and Nibbles ‘n Bites. We look forward to another successful Farmers Market season!
What’s Growing at The Farm
Wildflowers
Farmer Shane also plants four to five types of wildflowers including nasturtiums, zinnias, and cosmos. While the flowers are pretty to look at, they also play an important role in supporting the healthy growth of plants. Planting wildflowers around the crops attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. Pollinators support plant growth and overall plant health. The Farm maintains its own pollinator source through a bee colony, located on the edge of the forest at The Farm. Wildflowers also promote healthy soil through their deep roots that stablize plants that could move from water or wind. When they decompose, the nutrients from the plants goes into the soil and fertilizes crops that may be planted later. Different wildflowers also attract different types of pests, to keep them away from the crops. In addition to pests, wildflowers attract healthy insects like ladybugs that eat other pests who may hurt the crops. This reduces the need for pesticides, which can have a negative impact on some plants and animals.
Farmer Shane plans to add more wildflowers around The Farm’s small pond in the coming months. Wildflowers do not just help the crops but also support biodiversity by offering plant variety for animals that call the Bluff home. Wildflowers are relatively easy to care for as they require very little maintenance, and grow naturally in many areas of the country. Stop by The Farm this summer to take in the beauty of the colorful wildflowers.
Fitness & Wellness
INDOOR OR OUTDOOR EXERCISE: WHO WINS?
In 2003, the term “green exercise” was introduced as an umbrella term to describe physical activity in the presence of nature. This type of exercise can range from being fully immersed in the outdoors like riding a bike on the River Road Trail to RT’s Market or indoor exposures with natural elements like the large glass windows that make up the Canoe Club studio allowing members to view the May River or even the birds that hang from the ceiling in the Moreland Studio, quite the natural aesthetic.
When you think about living at Palmetto Bluff, “green exercise” opportunities are vast because our neighborhoods are immersed with protected green spaces, and trails connecting the villages, and no matter where you are on property, you’re never short of a spectacular view. The natural waterways, master-planned landscaping, and natural environment are second to none. This property invites us to be active outdoors.
So, here’s the question, we have all heard that exercising “outdoors” is good for us, but what’s the proof? Is there strong scholarly evidence that working outdoors is superior? Spoiler alert, maybe. And if it is that much better further evidence is required.
In February of 2023, the International Journal of Environmental Research in Public Health released a study on The Effects of Outdoor versus Indoor Exercise on Psychological Health, Physical Health, and Physical Activity Behavior. After searching nine databases from inception to March 2021, the team was able to review 10 eligible studies and make a total of 99 comparisons between outdoor and indoor exercise. In all, only 25 of the 99 comparisons were statistically significant. However, it is noteworthy that all findings of statistically significant differences between outdoor and indoor settings favored outdoor exercise. This means that there is a benefit, but more research is required.
So, should you abandon your outdoor exercise plans and stay indoors? Not at all. Exercising outdoors may not necessarily be better than indoors, but here are three outstanding benefits:
Being Outdoors Makes Exercise Feel Easier. Many people find outdoor exercise more enjoyable, accessible, and motivating than working out indoors. The changing scenery, fresh air, and sense of freedom can make physical activity feel less like a chore and more like an adventure. Being active with a friend or groups of people outdoors has also been shown to increase feelings of social connectedness.
Outdoor Exercise Boosts Your Immune System. Spending time in natural environments exposes the body to a diverse array of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. While some of these microorganisms may be harmful, exposure to a variety of microbes can strengthen the immune system by training it to recognize and respond to pathogens more effectively. This process, known as microbial diversity, helps to develop a robust and adaptable immune system.
Fitness & Wellness
Outdoor Exercise Enhances Mood. Have you ever taken a walk for 15 minutes on a beautiful day at lunchtime and been upset about it? That’s a hard no. Outdoor exercise has been shown to improve mood and reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. The combination of physical activity and exposure to nature can boost endorphin levels, leaving you feeling happier and more relaxed.
- Jeff Ford, Director of Fitness & Wellness1. Add frozen berries and banana to a blender and blend on low until small bits remain.
2. Add milk of your choice and protein powder (optional), and blend on low again, scraping down sides as needed, until the mixture reaches a soft serve consistency.
3. Scoop into 1-2 serving bowls and top with desired toppings such as chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut, strawberries, granola, or a nut or seed butter.
4. Enjoy! The smoothie mixture is best when fresh, though leftovers keep in the freezer for 1-2 weeks. Let thaw before enjoying.
SMOOTHIE BOWL
Total Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
• 1 heaping cup frozen mixed berries
• 1 small ripe banana (sliced and frozen)
• 2-3 Tbsp. milk of your choice
• 1 scoop plain or vanilla protein powder

Saddle Up: Exploring Longfield Stables’ Trail Ride Program
Nestled between the trees and busy roads of the Bluff, Longfield Stables is the picture of serenity. With lush green pastures, and horses grazing in the field it is a picturesque destination for both Members and horses alike. Members may have noticed an influx of new horses grazing in the field over the past few months. A welcome new addition to support the re-launched Trail Ride Program, these horses have already settled right in and are enjoying their new lives at Longfield Stables.
Before the launch of the new program, only three horses could be taken out for a trail ride at a time. In addition, each trail ride needs a lead horse to guide the herd through the trails, and not every horse was well-suited to lead. Late this fall, South Street Partners brought in nine new horses to join the program. The team started by getting to know the horses and teaching them what their new job would be by fitting them with equipment and showing them the trails. Just like people, horses find a purpose through having a job, however, some jobs can be physically taxing. Trail rides are the least physically demanding job that a horse can have. The horses are also rotated so that each horse only works one trail ride per day to give them time to rest.
“We work alongside these animals every day and it
is important that we support them. We love them so much.”
— Bella Urie Trail Ride Manager
While each horse has a stall in the activities barn, the horses spend most of their days outdoors in the Hayfield pastures roaming freely. Members may notice the horses enjoying their days outside when driving down Old Moreland Road. Many of the horses at Palmetto Bluff are former working horses and have lived a much simpler life since coming to Palmetto Bluff. Trail Ride Manager, Bella Urie, shared more about the program and what the horses mean to her. Bella started with Palmetto Bluff three years ago in the Upper Barn, before which she was a horse wrangler in Montana. She has done everything from teaching lessons to leading pony rides, to now managing the trail ride program. “Here the health, safety, and well-being of the horses are put first. We work alongside these animals every day and we must support them. We love them so much. That is what sets us apart from other programs. It’s so rewarding to give these horses a good life,” she said.
Trail rides are offered at 10am and 1pm in the cooler months and 8am and 10am in the summer. Times are subject to change based on weather as rainy days can make for unsafe terrain. When Members arrive for a trail ride, they will watch a brief safety video to learn the do’s and don’ts. Next they will get their helmets fitted and take time to meet their horse. Horses have unique personalities much like us, and it is the most fun part to learn the personality of your horse. Once everyone is acquainted, an instructor will help each Member mount their horse before mounting their own horse. The lead horse will guide the group on a one-hour ride through beautiful Spanish-mosscovered trails, exclusive to the Trail Ride Program. To make a reservation, Members can call the Club Concierge at 843.706.5515.
Big Mama
Big Mama, or Mama as we often call her, is a Draft Cross that came from Pennsylvania. She certainly lives up to her name. She serves as the “Mom” to her friends out in the pasture and will always makes sure everyone is behaving themselves! We love her for her floppy ears and droopy lower lip.
Daisy
Daisy is the smallest member of our herd, and the most laid back. She always seems to be in her own little world, not bothered by much of anything at all. Before Daisy came here, she was used on a ranch as a kid’s horse, and seems to be enjoying the slower lifestyle here in Palmetto Bluff. She loves to sleep and can be seen multiple times a day lying down in her pasture or stall taking a nap.
Saddle Up: Exploring Longfield Stables’ Trail Ride Program
Cowboy Bill
Cowboy Bill, or just ‘Cowboy’ as we often call him, will quickly steal your heart with his gentle eyes and calm demeanor. Although he is our biggest horse, he is by far the gentlest. He can be slightly reserved when you first meet him, but is quick to warm up after a cookie or banana! Cowboy can be quite selective with his treats and will make sure to sniff the treat before accepting. Cowboy has found a unique friendship with Phoenix, and the two have become inseparable!
Phoenix
Phoenix has been at Longfield for about eight years. He is a Kentucky Mountain Horse. It is hard not to fall in love with Phoenix’s quirky personality and cute face. You can often find Phoenix begging for treats by making funny faces at you from his stall, and he will never forget to remind you when he feels like he has earned one. You will rarely see Phoenix without his best friend Cowboy somewhere close by. Phoenix is also a natural in front of the camera and loves to model with his long blonde hair!
Ollie
Ollie is a staff favorite; we love his unique coloring! Just like his best friend, Magic, nothing ever seems to bother him. He’s a go-with-theflow kind of guy and does best when he’s with all his friends! It’s hard not to fall for his adorable baby face and inquisitive personality! When he is outside with his friends, he is very playful and sometimes can be a troublemaker!
Magic
Magic is a barn favorite. He is a quarter horse who is often stoic and calm. It’s hard not to love him with his easy-going attitude and cute face. Although he is small, he can be quite bossy when out with his friends. His best friend is Ollie, and the two of them can always be seen hanging out together while out in their pasture! One thing Magic hates is bugs!
Polly
Polly is an Appaloosa, a unique breed and color of horse. She is very sweet and loves attention anywhere she can get it! Out in the field she is the first to come over and say hi! She can be inquisitive and careful but is very laid back. Her best friend is Big Mama!
Surely
Surely is another one of our most easy-going and friendly horses. He loves people and is always the first one to come over for pets and treats! We love him for his fluffy coat and long mane. He is always in charge of the herd when outside with his friends and can sometimes be a loner, preferring the company of people instead of other horses.
Belle
Belle is a draft cross that has never met a stranger! She loves all horses and people and always likes to have a friend nearby. She has become a favorite and is very observant of her surroundings. She is quite the heartbreaker out in the pasture, with her looks and personality winning over all the boys. She loves to have her face pet, and would be happy to spend hours being pampered by the staff and guests.
Hokey Pokey
Hokey Pokey is another staff favorite. He has really come out of his shell since arriving on property, and has grown into one of our best lead horses. Although he is not very big, he has a big heart and a big personality. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and you can always tell what he is thinking with his animated facial expressions. He always tries his best for his rider and is a great partner out on the trails.

“Off the Wall” Cocktail in Hush Benefitting The Trevor Project
To celebrate Pride, Mel Albaladejo, bartender at the Stonewall Inn today, created a cocktail called “Off the Wall” one night while listening to Michael Jackson’s song by the same name. “The song captures how I live my life and how I see myself. I live life on my terms, being free and throwing caution to the wind no matter what people think or say,” she says. Our team in Hush wanted to join in on the fun. Our team crafted their own specialty cocktail for PRIDE. You can order any of these cocktails all month in Hush and the proceeds will benefit Lowcountry Pride.
