Letter from the Director of Operations
KEVIN RHATIGANPalmetto Bluff Members, Thank you to everyone who attended the South Street Partners Community Update last month. We hope that you share in the excitement for future Club improvements, just as much as the Club team. Additionally, we appreciate the feedback given and look forward to making Palmetto Bluff an even better place to live.
With Spring just around the corner, I look forward to spending more time outdoors around the Bluff. I encourage Members to enjoy a relaxing boat ride through the Inland Waterway, play a round of golf at Crossroads, and try an outdoor workout with Fitness & Wellness.
In January, we released the first The Culinary Corner newsletter, highlighting all things food and beverage. The communications team has an exciting lineup of events and information to share such as cocktail and cooking recipes, team spotlights, and restaurant
features. To sign up for The Culinary Corner and all other Club communications such as Golf, PBGO, Wellness, and more, please update your preferences on your Member Profile on the Member website.
In this issue of Palmetto Bluff Club Living, explore new events in March and April. Experience retro-style tennis at the Wooden Racquet Tournament, step into an enchanted forest for the PBGO Easter Egg Hunt, and learn how to craft new cocktails with Cole’s. Meet the Artists in Residence Julie Mcallister and Kurtis Shumm, learn how to Conquer Cardio with Jeff Ford, and kick off the first Around the Table of the year at Buffalos. Whatever you decide to attend, it is sure to be a spring full of excitement.
Sincerely,
Kevin Rhatigan Kevin Rhatigan Director of Operations Palmetto Bluff ClubWelcome to the Club

What’s Growing at The Farm
Spring Planting
With warmer weather just around the corner, The Farm is beginning spring planting. Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt are excited to plant new crops this season that will give the Palmetto Bluff Chefs more variety to pick from. Every week, Chefs from each restaurant meet with Farmer Shane and Wyatt at The Farm to discuss what crops are ready for harvest, what is being planted, and what can be changed for the future. In a culinary meeting in January, the Chefs expressed how it would be beneficial to have new types of peppers. Farmer Shane then got to work deciding what types of peppers would work best in the hot and humid climate and decided on eight varieties: jalapenos, serranos, green bells, cherry bombs, cubanelles, sweet bananas, poblanos, and orange habaneros. Other spring plantings include tomatoes, potatoes, peas, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and okra.
To prepare for planting, the first two weeks of March will be used for site preparations like ripping out the remaining plastic. Farmer Shane and Wyatt will plant twenty-four rows with the help of a few volunteers. The first plants going in the ground will be peas and potatoes in mid-March, followed by the remaining plants at the end of March into early April. The first spring planting will provide the harvest for the spring Farmer’s Markets, returning in May. After such a successful year in 2023, Farmer Shane and Wyatt are looking forward to another exciting year at The Farm.
What’s Growing at The Farm
One Year with the Chickens
The chickens will celebrate their first birthday in March! During the past year, the chickens not only began to lay eggs, but were able to supply a large amount to the pastry team for the delicious desserts Members enjoy around property. The chickens currently lay about 20 eggs per day. This is a slight decrease from the Fall where the chickens laid about 25 per week. As the weather gets colder, the chickens produce less and will eventually produce no eggs for one to two months. This is due to the decrease in daylight hours. During this time, the chickens rest to save energy for staying warm. However, by the first Farmers Market in May the chickens should be back to laying their normal amount of eggs.
Farmer Shane and Wyatt are also building a new seating area around the chicken coop for Members enjoyment. Stop by The Farm to wish the chickens happy birthday in March!

STOP PUTTING UP THE SHIELD OF BUSY
These days, it seems like everyone loves to talk about how busy they are. We share it vocally at work, with our families, in our heads; the classic, and I quote “I’m just so busy.”
The problem with being busy is when it’s used as a shield. Yes, we use being busy as a shield. We hide behind busyness and our schedules. We think we can’t do something or develop a new healthy routine that serves our lives because we don’t have the time.
If you are like me, how many times have you said: I’ll start that when things slow down, or I’ll eat healthier after this trip? Probably multiple. You’re human. Here are four ways where we all go wrong with busy.
Busy as a shield against unwanted tasks: In a professional or personal context, we may appear busy so that we can discourage others from adding more to our plate. If I tell my partner that work is stretching me thin, I won’t have to help around the house or take the kids to school.
Busy as a defense mechanism: It can be a shield against emotional or personal challenges. We may immerse ourselves in work or activities to avoid dealing with deeper issues or difficult emotions. Humans are smart, when a life event rocks our world, it is much easier to devote more time to activities we are already proficient in, it’s a coping mechanism.
Busy as a status symbol: When we use being busy to convey a sense of importance or success. Being constantly busy may suggest to the outside world that we are in high demand. This is where our ego gets in the way of change. I’m too important to take time in the morning to work out. I can’t go to sleep at a reasonable hour, there are way too many people depending on me.
Shielding from new commitments: Who wants additional commitments or responsibilities, that doesn’t sound very good. In this case, we claim to be busy, so that we can decline new tasks or obligations. Often, this is an internal decision where slowing down and developing a new habit feels too daunting, too much of a commitment that deep down we are unwilling to stick to or haven’t connected to the difference it will make in our lives.
So, as you can tell, it’s easy to put up this shield, but it’s also a problem because life’s just too short. We can’t wait until things slow down because they just aren’t going to. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, reminds us that: “the cost of your good habits is in the present, the cost of your bad habits is in the future.” If we want our future to be bright, we must lower the shield.
Once the shield is lowered, think about the one routine, experience, or to-do you’ve been putting off. Start by asking yourself why you haven’t acted yet. Is there anything getting in your way? Or do you just need to build it into your schedule? The next step is figuring out how to make it a priority and take it further by enlisting someone who can help you.
Remember, we make time for the things that are important to us. If you want to get healthy, strengthen a relationship, or have more fun in life, stop hiding behind the shield of busyness.

Crossroads Opening
One year ago, Crossroads was merely an open lot. With an idea to create a reversible course, King Collins knew that this plot of land could become much more. The development of the lot was fast-moving. Trees were removed, the site was de-watered to remove excess water, and the digging process began to shape the course. The team moved mounds around, carved out the Inland Waterway, and built up the practice green. “We were able to take a plot of land that did not originally have a lot of natural interest and create something wildly interesting, wildly different, wildly unique, and hopefully something that is wildly fun to play,” said Chris Johnson. The natural evolution of the course developed into more than was anticipated. Throughout the construction process, Rob Collins visited the site and made adjustments that ultimately made the course better.
Once the materials were laid and the irrigation installed, the sodding process began. This infrastructure was a lengthy process to create but now allows for easier maintenance of the extensive greens. Adam Deiwart and his team worked twelve to fourteen-hour days, seven days a week with no running water or electricity to create what Members can enjoy today. The team is still working hard to maintain the course conditions and is proud to see how the course has come to life.
“It means so much to be supported by Members and it is a part of the reason I love working at Palmetto Bluff.”- Chris Johnson Director of Agronomy
As the construction process took off, Steven Potter, Crossroads Head Professional, joined the team, moving from the May River course after a decade of service. “To unveil an incredibly different type of golf course to the many Members who have been looking forward to it has been really fun and exciting. I have heard the word fun more in two weeks than I have ever before. Being a part of this whole project and leading the operations side has been a real joy and a privilege.” This all plays into an exciting new golf experience that is completely different from the May River course. For Members who love to golf but also require flexibility in their schedule, Crossroads is a great option, as playing the course only takes about two hours. Members who would like to get their children into golf can also utilize Crossroads as parents can tee off from a regulation length, and their children can tee off from a shorter distance.
Crossroads Members can also enjoy a communal gathering space with the addition of a Lowcountry barbecue food truck and beverage cart. The food and beverage team has created a flavorful array of options, with smoky sandwiches and tacos, creamy mac and cheese, and classic cocktails to complement the fare. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
The whole Crossroads team is excited to welcome Members to experience all the course has to offer. Chris Johnson left us with these parting words, “there’s nine-hole courses, and there’s reversible courses, but there’s only one Crossroads.”
“Being a part of this whole project and leading the operations side has been a real joy and a privilege”

The Women of Palmetto Bluff: March Meatball Madness
This year marks fifteen years for the group, Women of Palmetto Bluff. The Women of Palmetto Bluff (WOPB) started as a small group of women wanting to connect with new Palmetto Bluff Club Members through social gatherings. Over the years, the organization has grown in numbers and in purpose. In 2015, the WOPB formed a Charitable Fund through the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Each year, the Women of Palmetto Bluff board selects one or two local charities to fundraise for through one large charitable event. The upcoming year is then spent organizing donations, sponsors, and the event details. At the beginning of each social, the group discusses upcoming timelines to keep the event on track.
In the past, the Women of Palmetto Bluff has supported Bluffton Self Help, Boys and Girls Club, Hopeful Horizons, Palmetto Bluff Conservancy, Palmetto Animal League, and more. This year, WOPB has chosen to support the Bluffton
Soup Kitchen and Backpack Buddies. The Bluffton Community Soup Kitchen provides assistance to underserved families through food, job assistance, child development, education, and community engagement. Backpack Buddies supplies underprivileged children with fresh produce to bring home and eat each weekend when they do not have access to school meals. Unlike other charitable organizations, all money raised by WOPB goes back to the charities. Last year, the WOPB raised the largest amount of money ever given to Meals on Wheels through one donation. The WOPB’s motto “Connect and Give Back‘’ is highlighted through their numerous socials to connect Palmetto Bluff women, and dedication to raising money for local charities.
The Women of Palmetto Bluff is hosting March Meatball Madness on Monday, March 18, at Cole’s. Open to all Members, March Meatball Madness will feature a sweet sixteen Meatball competition. Attendees can taste test each meatball creation, mingle with fellow residents, and compete in a bracket-style Pop-A-Shot competition. In addition, Members can participate in a wine pull and games, stop by the bar for complimentary beer and wine, and enjoy a live auction and DJ. Live auction items include a two-hour wine and hors d’oeuvre tasting for the winner and their friends, a Napa Valley vineyard tour and wine tasting experience, a one-year Dormie Golf Membership, and a three-night stay at at one of The Cliffs luxury four bedroom cottages. Dress in your college team’s attire and get ready for a slam dunk charitable event!
To join the Women of Palmetto Bluff, please vist www.wopb.org or contact Donna Litten at donnamlitten@gmail. com. The Women of Palmetto Bluff also invites any women who would like to join to attend an upcoming social free of charge.

Spotlight on Oyster Recycling
According to the Coastal Conservation League, only 10% of our local oyster shells get recycled back into our waterways. Why does this matter? Our baby oysters need shells to adhere to for their growth. This means that our oyster population growth is limited by the amount of oyster shells available in the waterways. Our culinary and service team have committed to an ongoing recycling program that will bring 100% of our oyster shells back into the May River for continuing the oyster population.
