JULY/AUGUST 2024 | VOLUME 7, ISSUE 4
Letter from the Director of Operations
KEVIN RHATIGANPalmetto Bluff Members,
I hope this letter finds you well, whether you are in the Lowcountry or seeking cooler climates this summer. This spring we enjoyed great weather and numerous memorable events and activities. As spring comes to a close and we begin summer, I would like to reflect on the wonderful spring events like the return of the Farmers Markets, fresh tomato tastings at The Farm, the Summer Slam golf tournament, and the Backyard BBQ and Oyster Roast events during Memorial Day weekend. If you would like to view and download photos from past events, please visit the Photo Galleries page on the Member website under the My Community tab.
In this issue of Palmetto Bluff Club Living, you will find information about club events in July and August, the Artist in Residence Series, and happenings at Montage. The feature event of the summer is sure to be Fourth of July weekend. This will be my first Fourth of July at Palmetto Bluff and I look forward to celebrating with all of you. The weekend includes the Firecracker 5K, the annual parade consisting of golf carts, bicycles, and pets through Wilson Village, and Stars and Stripes. Please carefully review the calendar of events so you don’t miss other fun summer activities such as the Dive N’ Movie at Moreland Pool and the Twilight Jumper show at Longfield Stables.

What’s Growing at The Farm
Summer Sights at The Farm
In early July, Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt will plant pumpkins. They will also continue to pick produce through the month of July including sweet corn, tomatoes, okra, and eggplant. In mid-August, the remaining plants will be harvested and dug up to prepare for Fall planting. The soil will then rest for two weeks to before plastic rows are added. Once the soil and plastic settle and heat up, the team will begin planting fall crops in early September.
Farmers Market
Thank you to everyone who attended the first Farmers Market of the year. The Farm had a variety of vegetables for sale including carrots, four pepper varieties, collard greens, sqaush, zucchini, and beets. Supplemental plants were provided from other local farms in the area.
The Palmetto Bluff Culinary and Pastry teams also created delicious items for patrons to enjoy. Each Farmers Market, the culinary team features a J-1 International Intern and a food from their home country. This past market, Fabian’s Empanadas made a tasty addition to the made-to-order lineup. Additionally, the pastry team offered Mexican conches, cinnamon rolls, banana pound cake, muffins, and cookies.
Tomato Tasting
Tomatoes are the number one plant grown across the United States. While tomatoes are a delicious addition to any meal, they also have substantial nutritional properties. One tomato can provide almost half of our daily recommended vitamin intake. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, a natural antioxidant that acts as an anticarcinogen.
While tomatoes can grow in many environments, they grow best in hot areas with full sun. Tomatoes are hard to grow in the Lowcountry due to the high humidity, bugs, and frequent rainstorms. To grow a perfect tomato, all aspects of weather and nature must join together perfectly.
Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt began planting by preparing the soil and adding plastic over the rows. The seedlings are planted
18-24 inches apart and are watered through an irrigation system each day to ensure that the roots can grow deep into the soil. Farmer Shane will also monitor the pH levels of the soil to ensure the soil is at the optimal level for growing the plants.
Farmer Shane planted four varieties this year; German Johnson, Better Boy, Celebrity, and Parks Whopper.
Each tomato variety falls into one of two categories, Shane explained, indeterminate or determinate. The plant form is the most common way to determine the category type.
Tomatoes that grow on a vine are indeterminate and tomatoes that grow on a bush are determinate.
“Celebrity and Better Boy tomatoes are two of my favorites and in my opinion the best tomatoes you will ever eat in your lifetime,” said Shane.
On a humid day in June, Members gathered at The Farm to enjoy the first tomato tasting of summer. After enjoying a brief description of tomato farming and an overview of The Farm, Members set off into the small garden to search for ripe tomatoes.
Each Member picked a few tomatoes, or even snacked on a cherry tomato right off the vine. After this, Members returned to the pavilion to build their sandwich with a choice of freshly sliced tomatoes, and delicious baked bread, courtesy of the Palmetto Bluff Pastry team. They then added different toppings and dressings to make their perfect tomato sandwich. It was a simple afternoon enjoying simply prepared delicious food, taking in the ambiance of the outdoors, and conversing with friends.
Fitness & Wellness
STOP BLAMING YOUR METABOLISM
Have you ever heard of NEAT? It is an acronym that stands for nonexercise activity thermogenesis which is fancy for the movement that takes place in your day. It is movement that makes a significant benefit on your metabolism but isn’t prioritized by most people like exercise and it is not practiced in the majority of our lives.
Early in my career, I came across a book authored by Mayo Clinic Research, Dr. James Levine called Get Up, Why Your Chair is Killing You. What an alarming title! This book was written back in the late 2000s and will remain relevant for decades to come because of how we collectively continue to live. On a population level, we get sicker and sicker because we no longer stick to the fundamentals that promote healthy metabolism.
Metabolism is a word that gets thrown around with little knowledge of how it functions or how we can positively impact it. Traditionally, the thinking is that our age is a big factor in our metabolism and it’s tough to influence it, you don’t have control. There is a general truth that as we age our metabolism becomes less efficient, but that doesn’t give us free reign to blame our metabolism when health benchmarks move in the wrong direction.
Quick crash course. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the energy required for core body functions and is measured at complete rest without food; it accounts for 60% of daily energy expenditure. The bigger the person, the more muscle the person has, and the greater his or her basal metabolic rate. Next is the thermic effect of food which is the energy expended in response to a meal associated with digestion, absorption, and fuel storage; it accounts for 10% of daily energy needs and is quite unflappable. The controllable is activity thermogenesis which can be subdivided into exercise activity thermogenesis and nonexercise activity thermogenesis; both account for the remaining 30% of energy expenditure. This is how it all works from a purely quantitative perspective.
So what does this mean for us?
Person-to-person, NEAT can vary as much as 2,000 calories per day. Many of us expend far more energy than others outside of exercise sessions because of how we live and as a community that is the epitome of an active lifestyle, we can not forget that our leisure activities and frequent walks throughout our day help to control blood sugars and increase our metabolism.
Recently, I was inspired to go back to sharing the fundamentals of healthy living because I had the opportunity to listen to a podcast on the Huberman Lab, featuring Dr. Casey Means, M.D. physician trained at Stanford School of Medicine and author of the book “Good Energy.” The podcast was sent to me by a Member and to me it drove home the point of establishing the fundamentals in your life and not wavering from them.
You see we get so caught up with the latest fat loss miracle, Ozempic as of late, that we forget that the fundamentals of healthy living cannot be bypassed, our bodies won’t allow it. In the case of your metabolism, start taking three 20-minute walks throughout your day, do so after meals to assist in the control of your blood sugars, strength train regularly, eat real unprocessed foods, and sleep. All of which won’t cost you anything.

Fit for All
Breaking boundaries in private community wellness programs and how to enjoy fitness outdoors with Wellness Director Jeff Ford.
Palmetto Bluff’s focus on outdoor enjoyment and connection with nature is evident in its fitness programming, which promotes a healthy lifestyle. Fitness plays a crucial role in maintaining overall mental and physical well-being. At Palmetto Bluff, there are programs catered to the individual needs of each Member, and programs that are breaking boundaries of private community fitness. One of these programs, Primal Fitness, started as a way to introduce Members to new outdoor workouts that were out of their routine. Many people tend to complete the same workouts week after week, eventually leading to fitness fatigue. Jeff Ford, Fitness Director, expressed his desire to introduce creative and innovative workout programs, taking advantage of the beauty of Palmetto Bluff and ensuring that the fitness programming remains fresh.
The Primal workouts initially took place at the Wilson Lawn & Racquet Basketball Courts and expanded into different monthly locations and themes. Each workout offers an outdoor functional workout that challenges typical gym exercise. According to Jeff “our reason for existing is not to stay with what we like to do. We as humans deserve to experience life in different ways. Fitness can be an example of that. Primal acts as the bridge to experience fitness in a new way.” Each location offers a unique challenge based on the terrain. For example, the High Noon workout took place at noon in the intense summer heat, making for a challenging experience. The River Road workout incorporated sled drags and uphill climbs, while the sandbar workout used both sand and water for resistance and cardio. The Moreland Pool workout combined swimming, stair climbs, and heavy lifting.
For Members stuck in a fitness rut, try shifting your focus from exercise to movement and explore the outdoors. Classes like Primal connect traditional exercise and movement. Additionally, biking between activities and brisk walks are effective ways to incorporate more movement into your day-to-day life, improving your overall health whether you currently work out or not. Fitness classes also provide socialization and the opportunity to meet new people. By meeting new people and adding fitness classes into your routine, you may also experience accountability to stay healthy. As you attend more classes, you will develop relationships with other Members who also enjoy health and wellness. “What better way to improve, strengthen, and foster social relationships than also doing something great for your body,” said Jeff Ford.
For Members just starting their fitness journeys, Primal Fitness might seem intimidating. Try incorporating 30-60 minutes of cardio five days a week. Cardio can include activities such as running, biking, or brisk outdoor walks, with the goal of increasing the heart rate without reaching a point of discomfort. This can be measured by the “Talk Test,” where one can talk to someone while walking, but not engage in a fully conversational pace. The shaded and flat Moreland Trail is an ideal option for walking, especially during the summer months. Walking not only benefits physical health, but also mental well-being by aligning with the body’s natural wake-sleep cycles. The benefits of walking are not just for physical health but also mental. In the morning, the sun signals your brain to turn off melatonin and wake up for the day. In the evening, the sun going down signals for melatonin to turn on and prepare for a good night’s rest.
If you are debating joining a fitness class, consider scheduling a comprehensive wellness screening to provide a baseline for your body’s health and fitness needs. From there, the fitness team can recommend classes tailored to your needs and requirements. All fitness programming at Palmetto Bluff aims to support your body’s wellbeing, allowing you to fully enjoy the fun events around property such as golfing, pickleball, and swimming. Jeff says “the purpose of working out is to take full advantage of Palmetto Bluff Club. If we are doing our job well, you should be able to visit the other departments on property be in less pain, and enjoy activities the way you want to.”
