Enjoy a selection of area farmers, local growers, and artisans in partnership with Lowcountry Made, as well as health and fitness offerings from Palmetto Bluff’s wellness team.
The chicken coop has been completed! Shane and Wyatt have now started moving the first batch of chickens into the chicken coop. Shane shared, “There are currently twenty-five chickens in the coop and run, with six more babies that will make their way out to the coop in a few weeks.” The food and water stations are now installed as well as a ventilation system to help keep the chickens cool. The ventilation system is 2 – 4” solar powered fans, mounted next to each other on the edge of the coop, at the highest possible area drawing out the hot air in the coop. Shane and Wyatt built a chicken run along side the chicken coop. This allows the chickens a fenced in area to roam during the day. The door on the chicken run came off the back porch of the old Union Camp lodge that used to be on property that was torn down in 2001.
“ I have waited since my first day as The Farm Manager to host my own Farmers Market. I could not be more excited to sell quality vegetables to the residents here at Palmetto Bluff!”
— Shane Rahn Farm ManagerAcross one’s lifespan, what percentage of time does an average American spend indoors? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American spends 93% of their entire lives indoors, 8% of that time commuting in cars. This means that if you are average, you are only spending 7% of your life. Both shocking and depressing, am I right?
We are now living in what is termed the “Indoor Era” and it is compromising our health. Our bodies and brains crave the outdoors, and we so often forget that being outdoors leads to huge health benefits. Here are the top three reasons to spend more time outside this summer.
It is critical to promote a healthy circadian rhythm, sunlight, and timing. Our brain needs to know when it is daytime and when it is nighttime. Regular exposure to sunlight signals the hypothalamus and pineal gland to act so that serotonin is produced during the day, leading to melatonin production at night when needed. The reverse is also true meaning that increased evening light can delay melatonin production and therefore the onset of sleep.
How can you take action? Get 10-20 minutes of direct sunlight within the first hour of waking up. Aim for a total of 3060 minutes of sunlight throughout your entire day. This will improve your ability to get to sleep faster, stay asleep, and wake up feeling rested.
Life is stressful and if you are like me, we are all guilty of coping with stress in an unproductive way. Have you ever heard of the term “nature pill”? It is a free and natural stress-relieving remedy defined by spending 10 minutes or more outside in nature. In an 8-week study conducted by Frontiers in Psychology, researchers had participants take a nature pill at least three times per week. Levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, were measured from saliva samples taken before and after a nature pill, once every two weeks. The study revealed that just a 20-minute nature pill significantly reduced cortisol levels. Participants who spent closer to 30 minutes experienced even greater drops.
How can you take action? Plan a 20-minute nature pill to break up your day. Whether you go for a walk, spend time with a friend outdoors, or have lunch on your patio, this could be the perfect prescription to improve your mood and lower mental and physical stress.
“Green Space” can be defined as open, undeveloped land with natural vegetation. It includes urban greenspaces such as parks and street greenery. Even with the increased real-estate development at the Bluff, it’s remarkable how much green space we truly have, and it will pay dividends for your health.
In 2018, evidence was gathered from over 140 studies across 20 different countries involving more than 290 million people and found that spending time in, or living close to, natural green spaces (like we do) is associated with diverse and significant health benefits which include reduced risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. Additionally, people living closer to nature also have reduced diastolic blood pressure and heart rate.
How can you take action? Take advantage of the incredible greenspaces and outdoor activities our community has to offer. Whether you walk the trail past the conservancy, stroll along the water to the Moreland treehouse, or bike ride around campus, you’ll be immersed in nature. Looking for a social component? Participate in pickleball, tennis, and golf, or join in on aqua fitness, outdoor yoga, or Primal Fit at the basketball courts.
In South Carolina, summer can be a time when many of us avoid getting outside because of the heat. Don’t let that be you this year; get out early and take your nature pill in the greenspace of your choice while participating in the activity of your choice. Life is so much better when you are sleeping soundly, feeling less stressed, and getting healthy.

It’s a Friday morning on the May River. My favorite time of year and, even more so, the best time of day for a ride on the water. Early this morning it was overcast with chances of rain but, magically, now there is not a cloud in the sky. It’s the perfect kind of day in the Lowcountry.
Living in South Carolina has always been a gift, but you haven’t truly experienced the coastal south until you’re on the water. The river looks like glass as we glide along. We are barely underway before we see two dolphins, a momma, and her baby. They swim around our boat and in between each other and move alongside us for a while before we spy the narrow creek we will venture into.
We fly through marsh grass with just wide enough that, if you stick your hand out, you can run your fingers through the Spartina Feeling like explorers, our captain tells us stories of the Lowcountry. Some are fascinating historical tales and some sound like they were woven out of wild imagination. We spot trees with a nest and learn about ospreys and their habits.
We burst into a clearing and are delighted when the captain puts the tube in the water. He shares the secret code to tubing. Thumbs up for faster, thumbs sideways for slower. The adventurous 8-year-old next to me has a different idea about speed, but I roll with it, because it’s impossible to frown on a tube.
Riding on the tube, we see the river from a whole new viewpoint. Our destination ahead looks like a secret uninhabited island, begging to be scouted. Though we are told the Page Islands only cover 40 acres, as we tube alongside the island, it seems like it goes on forever.
We pull up to a rustic dock and unload a cooler with our lunch and drinks. We head up the walkway, under a bower of juniper and the beauty of what we see almost makes us gasp.
Page Island is a unique and secret gem of the Lowcountry, with pathways leading between 8 hummock islands. We drop our stuff at one of the covered picnic areas. I am immediately torn between taking a nap on a hammock or embarking on a hike through the 4 miles of trails that go around the island.
We have time, so we opt for the hike first. Our naturalist captain points out lots of animal tracks and we learn about the tidal marsh that surrounds us. We soak in the island’s peace and tranquility before returning to Island 1. There, our group divides. The kids head down to the dock where the captain transports them over to the adjacent island for dock-jumping. The adults grab some snacks and head for the hammocks.
Shouts of excitement and laughter can be heard as the kids take turns jumping from the dock into the water. They pause to admire the dolphins swimming in the distance just a short way away.
After learning how to paddleboard, the kids finally come up to break for lunch. We then decide to skip over to another, slightly more inhabited island.
A short 10-minute ride later, we tie up on Daufuskie, an island filled with rich history. The kids make a run for the playground and the adults head to the bar to grab a few drinks to take on our trek back to the Bluff.
An Ultimate Lowcountry Day is truly an ultimate experience. Full of adventure and joy, embracing all that the Lowcountry has to offer. Reservations can be made by calling 843-686-6996. For full descriptions please see visit outsidepb.com.
Are you in need of a delicious cold treat this summer? In June, Melt will be crafting smoothies for all our Members. While we do love the ice cream at Melt, the smoothies will offer healthier options by blending fresh, frozen fruits and fruit juices. The inspiration to add smoothies to the menu comes from Melt’s supervisor Aly Buitrago. Aly wanted Members to have a refreshing drink for the warmer summer temperatures and bring variety to Melt’s menu. In additon, the team is able to include kale, spinach, and protein powder for Members looking to include extra protein or additional health benefits in their diet.
Yoder’s Southern Creamery
Melt now carries ice cream from Yoder’s Southern Creamery located in Sarasota, Florida. All their flavors are made in small batches that are handcrafted by their creamery team. Yoder’s makes their ice cream the old fashion way and use ingredients locally sourced out of Florida. Melt has a variety of Yoder’s flavors of ice cream ranging from classics like Cookies & Cream to the delicious Gator Tail, which features peanut butter and caramel.
Aly’s favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla ice cream because there are many options to mix in ingredients. “It’s a nice canvas to build what you want.” Aly says, “You could add caramel, candied pecans, or maybe turn it into a milkshake or an ice cream sundae. There are many possibilities when you have classic vanilla ice cream.”
Melt will also now have dairy-free and sugar-free ice cream. Be sure to stop by and check out all the new offerings from Melt.
“I am a kid at heart. I love being able to enjoy ice cream while being out at the swings in Wilson Village. The views while swinging are spectacular.”
— Aly Buitrago Melt Supervisor
