A nostalgic Journey Across the Palos Verdes Peninsula
By: Italian Photographer, Tom Wayne Bertolotti
Iwas standing on the cliffs in Luanda Bay, looking at the ocean when a white sedan pulled in next to me. A man wearing Jeans and a white T-shirt in his early 60s on a video call got out of his car. He walked to the cliff, flipped the camera toward the coastline away from himself, and said in a delightful accent: “Guarda! La California sembra la Sicilia!” – I could not agree more. Indeed, California looks like Sicily. Well, maybe not all of California.
As a child, I traveled the Pacific Coast from Seattle to Monterey, and it never struck me as particularly Mediterranean. Southern California is different. I first visited Los Angeles seven years ago, and my initial association was Greece. Big LA – sunny, hot, dusty, chaotic, spreading from the mountains to the sea with gridlocked boulevards connecting her multi-faceted neighborhoods immediately reminded me of Athens. This impression grew even stronger when during my first trip to South-

ern California, I hiked the trails overlooking the ocean in Crystal Cove State Park. The barren hills sloping down to the narrow beach, the dry brush, and the air filled with the smell of wild fennel; I could hardly believe my senses. I had entered a twilight zone and the Pacific Coast Hwy. (PCH) had suddenly ferried me to one of my beloved Greek islands. As oddities of restlessness wandered, I treasured these sensations in my heart. Gratefully, they all came back to me 10 times stronger when I moved to the South Bay in late 2018. Funny enough, I know the exact date I discovered Palos Verdes. On dec. 11, 2018, I bought a pair of cowboy boots at the Western store on Hawthorne and hurried to the beach to experience a long walk with no sand in my shoes. Bear with me – I was fresh off the plane and still didn’t get that the best way to prevent sand in your shoes is just to kick them off. I had walked from Redondo to RAT Beach several times before. But for some reason, I had never paid attention to that little trail that winds up the canyon at the end of the beach. My boots emboldened me because they

were not made for walking (nancy Sinatra). I hiked up the hill with a growing sense of wonder as I saw for the first time the delightful villas of Malaga Cove. The sights and the smells gave me once again that sense of being teleported back to Europe. Little did I know, my greatest surprise was still to come. When I reached the Malaga Cove Plaza, I could hardly believe what I saw. not only was it Bellissima, but it also reminded me of the country I left less than a month before. The past few 100 yards offered glimpses of Southern coastal Italy. At the Plaza, I was back in Mia Italia. If you have traveled to northern Italy, you know it. Countless villages have a square that looks like this: a main road suddenly opens on a wide piazza, with a classical-themed marble fountain; porches all around it shelter people from the sun in the summer but mostly from the rain in the winter. Mamma Mia, I had to pinch myself! I could have been some 50 miles from my hometown, Pavia, in the Bassa del Po (the agricultural plains close to the Po River, which stretches for 400 miles between Turin and Venice). That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. To me, Palos Verdes became like an island. Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti titled one of his most famous poems “L’isola.” years later, during an interview, Ungaretti said that what he described in his poem was the gardens of Tivoli in Rome, which are not an island Isola – he explained – è il luogo in cui mii solo. The island is the place where I isolate myself. And so is Palos Verdes to me. It’s an island where I isolate myself from the here and now and lets me travel to Italy
in space and time. The coasts of Palos Verdes bring me back to the Cinque Terre, to Liguria, to Sicily, to the chiseled beauty of Capri and Tropea, to the smell of fennel and sea and lemon tree. But the hills of Palos Verdes take me back to Italy, too. To the hills of Bergamo, to Bologna, Tuscany, and Umbria – to their ornated villas and sturdy Cascina; the “Cascina” (pronounced Kah-she-nah) is the quintessential Italian farm where houses, stables, and granaries are laid out in a squared structure that develops around a court. you have beautiful examples of Calcine around Portuguese Bend. The most difficult question I get from my friends in Palos Verdes is: “does Italy look like this?” In jest, I like to answer that Palos Verdes looks like Italy on Tinder. And maybe it’s my love for my new home that makes me add that Palos Verdes is more beautiful than Italy. But this is unfair to Italy; the true answer is “yes, Palos Verdes does look like Italy.”
To an Italian, Palos Verdes comes across as the dream of some extraordinary people who looked at an extraordinary land and sought to make it even more wonderful. It is humbling because everywhere I go, I see a love poem to the place from which I came, written in my own language. Palos Verdes looks like Italy. Obviously, not all of Italy looks like Palos Verdes, but that’s fine with me. Whenever I feel nostalgic, whenever I want to see and photograph Italy and her Grande Bellessa, all I must do is walk there or drive there, and this makes me smile a lot.

the original r ed o nion Celebrates 60 years

From the small community of Arivaca, AZ in the early 1900s when Catalina Castillo, Original Red Onion owner Jeff Earl’s great-grandmother, operated a small diner and served the townspeople and local mine operators many of the recipes that serve as the basis of the Original Red Onion Restaurant’s menu, to now, Jeff Earle tells his popular restaurant’s story.
“My grandfather Harry (Enrique) Spiva was born in Arivaca, AZ territory in 1904. Grandfather Harry’s father, Guillermo Spiva, died when he and his two brothers were very young, therefore, Grandmother Castillo fended for her family through the diner,” Jeff shares. “Grandmother Castillo subsequently married Arizona ranger William Earle, who adopted Harry and his brothers, giving them his surname.”
Harry used many of Jeff’s Grandmother Castillo’s recipes
to open a series of hard-luck restaurants and small diners before opening the first Red Onion in Inglewood in 1949.
In 1926, Robert F. Earle (“Bart”), Jeff’s father, was born. He went to the 11th grade at Washington High in L.A. before dropping out to join the navy during WWII, where he served as a landing craft operator and saw action in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima.
“Bart” and his brother don worked for father Harry in the first Red Onion, before leaving to open their own individual restaurant chains.
In 1973, “Bart” sold his chain of nine Red Onion Restaurants to Host International Corporation, keeping only his favorite location in Palos Verdes. Shortly after the sale, Host changed the name of their Red Onions to Casa Maria and took the concept nationwide as their signature Mexican chain.

Original Red Onion Restaurant Owner Jeff concludes: I grew up in Palos Verdes, attending La Cresta Elementary School and Chadwick High. I worked as an advance press aide for Ronald Reagan during the 1976 and 1980 presidential campaigns, turning down a White House job offer. Later, I earned my Master’s in history and international relations at the University of Southern California. In 1994, I ran for the California State Assembly, narrowly being defeated. Off and on throughout my adult life, I worked at the Red Onion, first as a dishwasher in 1972, eventually becoming general manager. In 1995, I purchased Red Onion and the property from my dad “Bart” Earle and added a second kitchen, a larger banquet room, and an upstairs office.

The husband and wife team of Vlasis and Virgina Andrianopoulos are proud to call Palos Verdes home, raising their vivacious young family. Vlasis is a native, graduating from Peninsula high – go Panthers! Their five-year-old son attends school in Rolling Hills Estates, which is also where their office is located. Farmers Insurance Exchange,® the largest of the three primary insurance insurers that make up Farmers Insurance, is recognized as one of the largest U.S. companies on the 2019 Fortune 500 list. Palos Verdes Peninsula LAND CONSERVANCY
For the past 35 years, the PVP Land Conservancy has protected more than 1,700 acres of natural lands with 42 miles of public trails on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, two nature centers at the White Point nature Preserve in San Pedro and the George F Canyon Preserve in Rolling Hills Estates, along with the Linden H. Chandler Preserve in Rolling Hill Estates. Working with local and state governments and with the help of volunteers and supporters, the Conservancy launched a $30 million “Go Wild for the Peninsula” initiative to acquire and restore the last remaining natural area on the Peninsula, thereby creating a new 96-acre Wildlife Corridor. Join this important conservation movement by participating in a guided nature walk, an outdoor volunteer day beautifying the preserves with native plants, and attending other upcoming nature-based activities. See how great it feels to support natural landscapes!

Both visitors to and residents of Palos Verdes find exceptional, unforgettable moments at Terranea Resort. Located on 102 acres along the scenic Peninsula, the luxury resort’s premier setting isn’t the only reason why Terranea shines. Amenities include a nine-hole par-3 golf course, an award-winning oceanfront spa, four swimming pools, a variety of restaurants, adventures at sea, and more.
Ultimately, it’s the meaningful connections and personalized service that are truly at the heart of Terranea’s exemplary experiences. Seeing isn’t believing, it’s how this very special destination makes you feel –and the people that help create that magic.
“I’m into taking care of our associates first,” explains Ralph Grippo, President of Terranea Resort “That’s my job.” He explains, “I firmly believe if you love what you do, where you do it, and with whom you do it, it’s not work.”
Known for his handshakes, hugs, and high fives to associates, Grippo’s philosophy is simple – respect for everyone. “I care immensely that our associates respect each other. I have zero tolerance for anything less,” says Grippo.
In addition to Terranea’s immense gratitude for their guests, Grippo exlpains how this beautiful locale and its inhabitants – both on land and at sea – are valued greatly. “I have traveled and worked both internationally and all over the country, and I don’t know of another place like Palos Verdes,” he exclaims. “Where else can you witness whales breaching right in front of you as they migrate along the Pacific, and dolphins splashing by? It’s spectacular.”
Being a good neighbor is paramount, and Grippo welcomes the Peninsula community. He calls himself the ambassador of the moment, acknowledging that Terranea doesn’t belong to any of us – it belongs to all of us.
“It’s everyone’s resort and I feel a responsibility to the neighborhood and to the people that built it,” says Grippo. With the resort’s many restaurants, spa, golf, and activities such as kayaking and archery all open and available to the public – Terranea has maintained its significance and importance to the local community since its opening in 2009. “We want our local community to enjoy us. We are part of the fabric of the community. Everyone is welcome,” Grippo exudes with excitement.
“I want it to be fun for everyone at Terranea and that includes associates and guests alike. It’s all the little things and special, personal touches provided by

“I love what I do, I love the resort, I love the people – from our guests to our associates, everyone is so nice. How could I not be happy working at this beautiful property? The atmosphere is fun. Mr. Grippo is a wonderful person who always makes us feel that we’re working with just a big family.”

the associates that make a difference. I believe that if our associates feel valued, their work will show it in going the extra mile to ensure guests feel well-cared for.”
To show love for Terranea’s staff, Grippo hosted an all-associate gala to celebrate his team’s hard work, featuring a delicious array of food and festivities in the resort’s beautiful Grand Ballroom. “It’s important to have a fun reward, and recognize our associates for all their wonderful work and dedication to our guests,” he shares.
Attention to detail and finding moments to make a guest’s stay special is a hallmark of the Terranea team, and Grippo knows that luxury guests look for personalized, unique, and exclusive experiences.
“Using a guest’s name is very meaningful and powerful, and we often remind staff of this simple thing. Or when you walk into a restaurant, does the hostess sit, or does she open the door? Is it a big deal? no, but slight details make us different,” Grippo adds. “There is a right and wrong way to do things, and our associates do things the right way – guests leave happy. So happy, they want to come back.”
“It is about how we make you feel, what your experience is like, and how we deliver it. This is the difference. This is why customers come back, and tell friends and family about us.” He believes it all comes down to thinking with the heart and trusting your instincts. “I can teach you how to check people in and cook food and make beds, but I can’t teach instinct or how to think with your heart. I look for this in employees.”
The proud father of a 23-year-old daughter and a 25-year-old son, Grippo’s lifelong dedication to teamwork and introduction to the service business began at 15 years old, and included former roles as a cook, busboy, dishwasher, and server.
“My job is to take care of our people first. And I firmly believe we’re in it together.”

In June 1923, 10 years after Frank A. Vanderlip, Sr. and a syndicate of buyers purchased 16,000 acres that make up the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a real estate rally was held in Malaga Cove to interest potential buyers in the area. Well, over 30,000 people and 6,000 automobiles visited the grounds of what is now Malaga Cove School. Many came to picnic on the hills and learn about grand plans for the Peninsula and enjoy airplane flyovers, yacht races, and athletic games for children. The plan’s first subdivision with 3,200 acres, now the City of Palos Verdes Estates, was planned for the northwest portion of the Peninsula. It also included Miraleste, now in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, to the east. In 1923, the Palos Verdes Homes Association and Art Jury were established and responsible for parks, streets, bluffs, playgrounds, amenities, and monitoring buildings’ specifications. La Venta

Inn was completed, and a plant nursery was established in Lunada Bay to provide trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants to the developing community. Plans for roads, utilities, and town centers were well underway.
In just one year, over 3,000 homesites had been sold and by 1930 several recognizable buildings on the Peninsula were completed. These include the Palos Verdes Golf Club, the Malaga Cove School, the Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club, the Malaga Cove Library, the neighborhood Church, Malaga Cove Plaza’s Gardner and Syndicate buildings, and neptune Fountain. Further south, Point Vicente Lighthouse was also completed as were the Vanderlip homesite stables (now the Portuguese Bend Riding Club) in Portuguese Bend.
While there were efforts to purchase and develop the remaining 13,000 acres according to the original plans, the early Palos Verdes Project didn’t have the necessary capital to make this happen. In fact, 15 years after development started and during the Great depression, the Project stalled and found itself with fewer investors and a huge tax debt it couldn’t afford.
The dire tax situation led to the incorporation of the City of Palos Verdes Estates in 1939, the Peninsula’s first city. Although Miraleste was part of the first subdivision, it was excluded from the new city since it wasn’t contiguous to the northwest development. The Peninsula population spiked dramati-
cally after World War II, surging from just under 14,000 in 1950 to 54,000 in 1967. This ultimately led to the incorporation of the cities of Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates, both in 1957, followed by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes in 1973.
