A Conversation with Local Artist

Robin Jack Sarner Written by Cindy Donn e l l y

Rancho Palos Verdes resident Robin Jack Sarner is an abstract artist whose creations explore nostalgia while offering a narrative about the preservation of precious and vintage things, she explains she uses “old school materials in an abstract new way.” PV Magazine had the opportunity to talk to Robin about her work and her evolution as an artist. When did you move to the Peninsula? “I grew up on the East Coast but moved to California about thirty years ago. My husband grew up on the Peninsula and was part of the last graduating class at Miraleste High School, we decided we wanted to raise our kids on the hill, and now we live walking distance from the school.” When did you realize you had artistic abilities? “I think I was 5 or 6 years old. I started as a photographer taking pictures of different things to create compositions. High school art classes introduced me to drawing and painting and I was drawn to painting.” Robin explains she struggled with math and science, but it was art that drew her into school and eventually the career choice of art teacher. She remembers growing up claiming she was an artist was embarrassing, it did not seem to be something real or important. Now she is very proud to be an artist and able to leave something behind with her art. How did you get in to Abstract Painting? Robin explains that after high school she went on to study art in college earning a degree in Art Education, but traditional methods were always the focus, although students were introduced to the Abstract Impressionist art movement as a topic of study, she had few opportunities in the classroom to work on abstract techniques. It was not until her final year of college that she started to experiment with abstract art after being introduced to the mid-century modern masters. After earning her degree,

she planned to become an art teacher but due to a lack of educational funding for art and music, there was little demand for art teachers. At this point, she left the art world to pursue other employment, and then eventually married, had kids, and stayed home to raise her children. As her kids entered school, she began taking classes years ago with Dale Patton, a well-known and longtime abstract art teacher at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Today, she is a large canvas painter. Working with 7 to 10 foot canvases, action painting. She says she is a hyper person, and this allows the energy out. Robin’s current work deals with her journey of self-discovery through gestural painting styles that allow processing of emotion. Working with vintage items that will be preserved in a tangible way, she intertwines nostalgia into her abstract work. She finds young people are drawn to her work, the contrast to the digital world brings a unique perspective and they are attracted to the continuity of paper and tactile material. Her goal with this type of work is to preserve “old school.” Robin’s work has been exhibited in local and international galleries, published in art magazines, and retained by worldwide collectors. Robin shares, “Art can have a purpose, a different purpose for each person. Whether it’s meaningful for one’s own reasons or not, historical stories and preservation can evoke emotion. There is a lot that art can do.” Do you have a favorite piece? Formidable speaks to my grandmother’s character and fortitude. My grandmother’s impact on my life was profound, shaping my values and passions. She embodied strength, artistry, and dedication, fostering a bond between us rooted in our shared interests of art and genealogy. Her belief in my creative potential fueled my journey

to becoming an artist. Our 1870’s family farm was sold and we discovered personal ephemera spanning the early to mid-1900s. I integrated these artifacts to encapsulate her life journey and our shared experiences using travel maps, receipts, negatives, vintage wrapping paper, hymnal pages, dictionaries, local papers, kodak slides, handwritten mail, knitting and sewing patterns. The final product celebrates her legacy and the resilience she exhibited from a time of horse and buggy to the digital age. What is your connection to the Palos Verdes Art Center? When her children entered school, Robin began volunteering with Art At Your Fingertips and discovered the Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC). Her involvement led her to become a presenting artist for Art At Your Fingertips and other similar art programs in the South Bay. She noticed a need for projects built around both female artists and abstract artists and has created curriculum-based abstract art projects for local school districts serving over 100,000 students. This involvement with Art At Your Fingertips and PVAC lured her back to her artistic roots. Generations of Art A Mother-Daughter Journey Written by Melani Moro s e E d e l s t e i n

Art flourishes and thrives in the coastal haven of Palos Verdes, nestled in unexpected corners, awaiting discovery with each passing day. Jeanne Zaske’s artistry flourishes amidst the breathtaking natural landscapes that inspire her vibrant paintings. This profound connection to the beauty of her surroundings has been ingrained in her daughter, Lynnie, from a young age, shaping her own artistic journey amidst the scenic vistas of Palos Verdes. Now residing in Redondo Beach, Lynnie Sterba, who is also a therapist, continues to draw inspiration from her upbringing, regularly attending art classes at the Palos Verdes Art Center, where both she and her mother are active members of various artist groups. Their connection to the center runs deep, having exhibited their artworks in its prestigious gallery on numerous occasions. Jeanne’s reputation as a respected artist in Palos Verdes precedes her, with a dedicated following of collectors who cherish her evocative creations. Similarly, Lynnie has cultivated her own admirers, drawn to her unique perspective and Still Life by Jeanne Zaske artistic flair. “I can’t remember when I wasn’t doing some kind of drawing or painting,” says Lynnie. Together, mother and daughter have explored the profound influence of nature on their work, infusing their paintings with the essence of Palos Verdes’ breathtaking landscapes. Their artistic journey has been documented in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Artists book by Stephen Smoke, a testament to their contributions to the local art scene. For Lynnie, art has been a lifelong passion and deep love but, “It wasn’t until 2004, with my first group show, that I began to take art seriously,” she says. Since then, she and her mother have collaborated on two successful mother-daughter exhibitions in 2005 and 2012. Now, they’re preparing for their latest endeavor—a joint showcase titled “Art That Inspires” at the Malaga Cove Library Gallery. Scheduled for May 1 to May 31, 2024, with a reception on May 4, this exhibition promises to be a celebration of creativity and familial support. Their commitment to making a difference through art and their belief in its healing power shine through in every brushstroke. Artists Jeanne Zaske and Lynnie Sterba Below: Flock of Colors by Lynnie Sterba As visitors peruse the gallery, they’ll witness the symbiotic relationship between Jeanne and Lynnie’s artistry. Despite their distinct styles, there’s a tangible connection that speaks to their shared experiences and influences. From vibrant color palettes to recurring motifs, their works resonate with joy, beauty, and inspiration, uplifting all who encounter them. Above all, the exhibition is a testament to the bond between mother and daughter, nurtured by a mutual passion for art. Jeanne’s unwavering support has provided a foundation for Lynnie to flourish, while Lynnie’s fresh perspective breathes new life into their collaborative efforts. Together, they invite viewers to immerse themselves in a world where art transcends generations, forging connections that resonate long after the exhibition’s conclusion. There will be a closing ceremony on May 31, 2024 for the “Art That Inspires” show at Malaga Cove Library from 6pm-8pm with a closing reception artist talk. Richard Humphrey Nestled along the rugged coastline of Southern California, Palos Verdes Peninsula boasts a rich tapestry of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Among its many treasures lies the enduring influence of artist Richard Humphrey, whose profound connection with the environment has not only inspired his artistic endeavors but also fueled his dedication to conservation. Richard Humphrey moved to Lunada Bay in 1959 and has been painting and drawing on the Palos Verdes Peninsula since the age of seven. Humphrey’s artistic journey unfolded amidst the splendor of the Peninsula’s rural coastline. His childhood adventures exploring the hills, sea, and open spaces laid the groundwork for a lifelong love affair with landscape painting and a fervent dedication to protecting the natural environment. In 1997, Humphrey’s passion for both art and conservation converged. “Myself and six other artists got together to establish the Portuguese Bend Artist Colony in part to raise funds and awareness for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy,” he says. This ultimately led to the preservation of over 1,700 acres of open space. Humphrey’s role in this endeavor exemplifies his belief in the symbiotic relationship between art and nature, each serving as a catalyst for the other’s preservation. After studying at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Humphrey embarked on a professional career at The Aerospace Corporation, where he honed his skills as both an artist and a designer. In 1985 Humphrey discovered his true calling in plein air painting and his love for the Peninsula’s magnificent landscapes continued to grow. “I have been friends with Jim York, owner of Catalina View Gardens Winery, for several years and have painted on his property many times. A few years ago when I was building my new studio, Jim generously offered me some space on his property to set up a temporary studio. From that, I did several paintings that included his vineyard, one of which he used for the wine label,” he shares.

Celebrating the Artistic Heritage of Palos Verdes Wr i t t e n b y M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l stein

Over the years, Humphrey’s work has garnered widespread acclaim, gracing the pages of esteemed publications and adorning the walls of prestigious museums across the United States. His crowning achievement came in 2007 when he received the California Art Club’s Gold Medal for Best Landscape, a testament to his mastery of capturing the essence of the Palos Verdes Peninsula on canvas. Despite the strides made in preserving open space, Humphrey remains vigilant in the face of new challenges, particularly proposals for coastal development. Through his art, Humphrey hopes to ignite a sense of stewardship and appreciation for the unique landscape of Palos Verdes Peninsula, ensuring that it remains a source of inspiration for generations to come. BETH BOWEN

Her Whirlwind Ascent to Artistic Stardom Written by Melani Moro s e E d e l s t e i n

Life has a funny way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, often leaving us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. But for Beth Bowen, a renowned international abstract artist and mother of four from Palos Verdes, navigating uncertainty has led to an extraordinary journey from doubt to flourishing. At the age of 38, Beth found herself at a crossroads. Divorced with four kids and no clear career path, she grappled with financial instability and the daunting prospect of starting anew. Instead of succumbing to uncertainty, she made a bold decision to confront her fears head-on. Initially, she found herself on a reality TV show, not what she anticipated, leaving Bowen feeling disillusioned with the experience. Faced with uncertainty about her next steps, Bowen sought solace in painting, discovering its therapeutic qualities during quiet moments. What started as a form of therapy soon blossomed into a full-fledged career as an internationally recognized abstract artist. “I learned how to paint from YouTube and found myself really present and in the moment when painting but I never dreamed I’d have a gallery show. I had no idea what I was doing. I called a gallery sight unseen and paid $500. Then I just cranked the pieces out. Nobody knew I did art, nobody. So it was a huge surprise to everyone. I put it on Facebook and 250 people came to my showcase. It was crazy. I sold half my collection that night,” Bowen shares. Born and raised in Fresno, California with no formal art training, Bowen’s resilience and determination quickly paid off. “At first it felt like imposter syndrome. I had no idea how any of it worked, no clue about the art world or how to price my pieces, etc.. I remember creating paintings and bubble wrapping them the night before, and shipping them to Miami to be presented at Art Basel,” she says. Within her first year as an artist, she showcased her work at every major art festival across the nation. Her talent caught the attention of international audiences, leading to extraordinarily prestigious exhibitions at Le Louvre in Paris and even creating a 16 foot mural commissioned for the 2022 World Cup. 18 | PVMagazine | April | 2024

Beth celebrates her print distribution deal with HomeGoods/TJ Maxx

Today, Bowen’s artwork can be found in prominent locations such as NYC Times Square and luxury hotels like the Four Seasons. She has been commissioned to create what she calls a ‘huge piece’ for the 150th anniversary of Kentucky Derby and is very proud of her print distribution deal with HomeGoods/TJ Maxx. “TJ Maxx was my mom’s favorite store so for me when I got in there, that’s when I really felt like I’d made it. That was big, it was for my mom,” she says, further solidifying her reputation as a rising star in the art world. Despite her rapid success, Bowen remains grounded in her roots and dedicated to her role as a mother to four children. As she continues to paint her way through life’s ups and downs, she serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for anyone facing adversity. Bowen’s journey reminds us that with courage, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change, we can turn our fears into opportunities for growth and fulfillment. ROSA KWoN EASTON Rosa Kwon Easton

Celebrating Local Author’s Debut Novel, White Mulberry Written by Melani Mo ro s e E d e l s t e i n

Longtime Palos Verdes resident and trustee of the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) Rosa Kwon Easton’s novel marks the culmination of a remarkable journey that spans continents and decades. As she nears her 60th birthday, Easton finds herself on the verge of realizing a dream she’s cherished for more than twenty years. With the release of her debut novel, White Mulberry, slated for December, she unveils a story woven against a vibrant historical backdrop. Through her writing, Easton extends a warm invitation to readers, urging them to embark on a captivating exploration of the human condition. With her unique perspective and storytelling prowess, she guarantees an immersive literary journey that will linger in readers’ minds long after they’ve closed the book. What makes Easton’s achievement all the more inspiring is her deep connection to our local community. Currently serving her second term as a trustee of the PVLD, Easton’s commitment to literacy and education is deeply rooted in her personal history. As an immigrant from South Korea, Easton’s journey to becoming an author, trustee, and lawyer was shaped by her early experiences at the library. In a heartwarming testament to the transformative power of libraries, Easton learned to read English in libraries all over the South Bay. It was within the walls of the community hub that is a library, where her love for literature was ignited, setting her on a path that would eventually lead to the publication of her debut novel. “Those local libraries in Hawthorne and Torrance, in 1971 when I was seven years old, that’s where my love affair with words and stories began,” Easton says. Right from the start, she couldn’t help but notice the absence of stories featuring people who resembled her. “There was a huge lack of stories with strong Asian heroines, especially ones like my grandmother. She went through some tough times during the Japanese Occupation of Korea, she even had to pretend to be Japanese to survive. Her resilience stuck with me, and I knew I had to tell her story. And that’s how White Mulberry came to be. My first novel is a tribute to her strength in the face of adversity,” shares the first author.

Rosa is a trustee of the Palos Verdes Library District and credits many of her achievements to her early love of reading and libraries.

Easton’s story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that libraries can have on individual lives and entire communities. As she prepares to share her literary creation with the world, she remains deeply grateful for the role that the library played in shaping her destiny. Rosa Kwon Easton’s upcoming novel White Mulberry and its sequel Red Seal, will be released in winter 2024 and 2026 respectively. Learn more about Rosa Kwon Easton, please visit rosakwoneaston.com

For Pfeil, golf isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life, a passion that has shaped his experiences and defined his character. Born in Chicago and moved to Palos Verdes at the age of 5, his introduction to golf came at an early age, under the guidance of his parents who were avid golfers themselves. “My mom was a great golfer, my dad was an average golfer. I played a lot of baseball and some basketball, and I played some golf and I always loved the sport,” he recalls, reflecting on his formative years. “Most importantly, I had the good fortune of having Bud Oakley, PVGC Head Professional, as an instructor and mentor all the way to the PGA Tour.” It was this early love for golf that propelled Pfeil into the world of competitive play. He graduated from Palos Verdes High School, winning the CIF Championship. He attended University of Southern California and was named an all-American. Mark was selected to the 1973 Walker Cup Team, the highest honor in amateur golf. He then embarked on a journey that would lead him to the highest echelons of professional golf. “I think I survived in golf because I played a lot of it,” he muses, reminiscing about the countless hours spent honing his craft on the fairways of the Palos Verdes Golf Club. His dedication bore fruit when he qualified for the PGA Tour in 1975, a feat that underscored his talent and tenacity. Reflecting on his journey through the qualifying school, Pfeil fondly remembers the camaraderie shared with fellow players. “We all became very good friends,” he recalls, highlighting the bonds forged amidst the rigors of professional golf. Throughout his 20 year PGA Tour career, Mark achieved 5 professional victories. His many years of tournament golf has left an indelible mark on his memory. Among his favorite memories was the opportunity to play in The Masters at Augusta National. The courses played, the people met along the way, and the camaraderie and competition shared with fellow professionals was the greatest experiences. Beyond his achievements on the tour, Mark’s connection to Palos Verdes remained steadfast. Raised in the shadow of the PVGC, Mark’s roots run deep in the community. “When we moved to Palos Verdes, we moved to a home opposite the 17th hole,” he recalls, painting a wonderfully vivd picture of his childhood antics amidst the fairways.

Kunal Patel, MD

UCLA Health Welcomes Neurosurgeon to Palos Verdes Office Written by M e l a n i M o ro s e Ed e l s te i n

The Palos Verdes Peninsula welcomes Dr. Kunal Patel to the community. He joined the UCLA Health Palos Verdes office in the summer of 2023. He also sees patients at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in West Los Angeles but he has a special place in his heart for Palos Verdes. “Seeing patients in the PV clinic is my favorite part of the week. I used to live in RPV and I really love the area,” he says. Dr. Patel shares more about his life in the following interview. PVM: Please tell us what you love about your work. Dr. Patel: Neurosurgery is a highly specialized and complex field. Even more, I specialize in surgery for brain tumors. Brain tumors that require surgery require highly trained surgeons and medical centers like UCLA Health. Studies have found that clinical trials are biased towards a population that lives close to the main medical center. To try to address this, UCLA Health is bringing Neurosurgical care into the community. By offering Neurosurgical care in the community I am able to care for more patients closer to their home, and being able to provide residents of PV the highest level of care is really the goal. PVM: What do you want the community to know about you and your practice? Dr. Patel: I am a fellowship trained neurosurgeon focused on the treatment of brain tumors. I see patients with neurosurgical conditions in the UCLA Health Palos Verdes clinic and perform surgery at Ronald Reagan Medical Center in West Los Angeles. My goal is to provide access to high level pre and post operative care in Palos Verdes. This allows patients full access to highly specialized Neurosurgical care and UCLA’s clinical trials in a convenient location, close to home.

PVM: Talk about your education and experience. Dr. Patel: I am a neurosurgeon focused on the treatment of brain tumors. I completed my undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College and my medical degree at Weill-Cornell Medical College. I completed my residency at UCLA and a CAST accredited fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at UCLA. I am now a full-time faculty member and assistant professor at UCLA. I teach undergraduates, medical students, and residents. I have published over 75 peer-review publications and have been the recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health, Jonsson Cancer Center, Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Tower Cancer Foundation, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. I am passionately working to find better treatments for brain cancer to increase the options and outcomes for patients with brain tumors. My father was a physician and always taught me the importance of treating your patient’s like family. People always ask me, “what would you do if it were your mother”, but I always make medical decisions as if my patient was my family member. My field is very special in that the conditions are serious, and I make every effort to see my patients as soon as possible, spend time to explain what exactly is going on and carefully review all options with my patients. Having a brain problem or needing brain surgery is a major event in people’s lives and I treat it as such. I believe communication is an important part of providing care to my patients so I make sure patients are able to contact me before and after their surgery with any questions. PVM: What do you enjoy doing with your free time? Dr. Patel: I enjoy spending time with my family. When I do have some free time, I play in a rec basketball league and enjoy hot yoga with my wife. 2024 | April | PVMagazine | 25

The Peninsula Music Fair has been a part of the Peninsula calendar of events since 1972. Organized by the Peninsula Committee Los Angeles Philharmonic (PCLAP), the event has evolved over the years, but the purpose has remained to support youth music education and foster the appreciation of music in the community. The event started as an outdoor concert held in 1972, with guests picnicking on the tree-shaded lawns of Chadwick enjoying Zubin Mehta conducting the LA Phil, over five thousand attended and tickets were just $3.50! During the 80’s and 90’s the event evolved into a festival atmosphere with professional music performances, LA Phil conductors, and increasing activities for children including hands-on Music Mobile, Jim Gamble Puppets, crafts and more. Beginning in 2009 the event was redesigned in size and title, the youth component to the event has developed into the annual Music In the Garden youth concert held at the South Coast Botanic Garden each Spring. Music In the Garden works to highlight and support school music programs and give them the opportunity to perform while offering the community a chance to see the quality and talent of local young musicians. Participating schools receive a $200 honorarium from PCLAP. This year’s Music In the Garden, took place on Saturday, March 16, 2024. PV Magazine was able to talk with event co-chair Ruth Trotter and longtime PCLAP member, Marian Duntley about this year’s concert and the important work of the organization. Both were very pleased with this year’s event, the weather cooperated, and the concert was held

outdoors in a lovely setting in the South Coast Botanic Garden, and was well attended, not only by family members, but many garden guests that were delighted to enjoy the unexpected music during their visit to the garden. Ruth said she was “struck by the enthusiasm and quality of the music.” Ruth and Marian expressed their appreciation for the South Coast Botanic Garden which supports and collaborates with the PCLAP every year and provides the venue for this concert. This year’s participating schools from the Peninsula included Palos Verdes High School String Quartet, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Orchestra and Choir and Advanced Jazz Band, Palos Verdes Intermediate School Pep Band, and Ridgecrest Intermediate School Advanced Orchestra. Other South Bay schools participating included Casimir Middle School Advanced Orchestra and South High School Spartan Jazz A Band. In addition to hosting Music In The Garden each year, PCLAP organizes The Angel Fund to support music programs on the Peninsula. Music teachers and directors can apply for grants to use for music, repairs, or instrument acquisition. This year, Peninsula High Jazz Band received funds to help acquire new saxophones and students were able to play these new instruments at the concert. There are also major fundraisers to support the LA Philharmonic and audience development along with raising funds to allocate to youth programs. They are currently preparing for a fundraiser on May 5, 2024, at Michael’s Tuscany Room featuring a performance by renowned tenor, Dennis McNeil. The event will benefit the LA Philharmonic and local music education programs.

Grand Vision Foundation For twenty-five years, Grand Vision Foundation has helped to strengthen our community through the performing arts. In the beginning, we brought attention and new life to the historic Warner Grand Theatre, revitalizing it through needed restoration, events, screenings, and the promotion of independent productions in the space. But that wasn’t enough. Grand Vision needed a smaller venue where we could do more experimental work, support performing artists, and build a signature environment. Since 2008, we have seen that vision come to life at the Grand Annex Music Hall. We then founded our Meet the Music education program for local schools and created community classes and events in response to the Harbor area’s need for access to live music and consistent music education. Today, Grand Vision continues to find innovative ways to serve our audiences, artists, and youth through live and virtual programming. We celebrate the power of music and the arts to express who we are and honor our common humanity. Every year Grand Vision hosts The Gathering for the Grand Fundraiser. This year the event will be held on May 11, 2024 at the PV Golf Club and will honor Yolanda Valle-Perry. The theme is Gidget’s Glamorous Beach Party with a special appearance by Kathy KohnerZuckerman, the real-life inspiration for the character of Gidget from the 1957 novel that inspired the movie. The stars shone brightly on the graduating Ticktocker Class of 2024 at NCL Peninsula Chapter’s annual Medallion celebration in Beverly Hills. Starlight was the theme of this year’s recognition, illuminating the six years and over 15,000 hours these seniors have dedicated to serving our community. Chapter President, Jenny Litchfield, welcomed guests and began the evening’s festivities by introducing the chapter’s newest class – the Class of 2029. Then guests were entertained with a fun look back at the senior class when they were first presented as 7th graders. The young women sparkled on stage during the opening fashion show, and highlighted their rewarding, inspiring and memorable experiences volunteering with NCL’s more than 30 philanthropy partners, and at its Ticktocker Thrift Shop, which has raised over $1.2 million dollars during their six years. Ticktocker Senior Class President, Beatrice Navarro, engaged the guests on behalf of her NCL sisters, reflecting on their many experiences volunteering with their mothers and one another throughout their NCL journey. “Tonight, we honor the unwavering dedication, countless hours, and boundless passion that our class has poured into this organization…Here’s to the Class of 2024, a shining constellation of unique individuals, leaving an incredible mark on the universe.” As part of the chapter’s tradition, each of the 25 Ticktockers was presented during the white dress ceremony. Exploring Military Archaeology in P alos V e r des Written and ph o t o g ra p h ed b y J i m S h n ee r

The Peninsula is home to military archaeological remains dating from the 1920s to the 1970s. Most of these structures lie in the area surrounding Rancho Palos Verdes (RPV) City Hall and are accessible to the public. This site was known to the Army as the Long Point Military Reservation. During World War I Fort MacArthur in San Pedro was built to protect the then new Port of Los Angeles from threats of attack by enemy battleships. Fort MacArthur’s original major armaments included four concrete batteries, each with a 14” gun and two batteries each with four 12” mortars. These six batteries each has observation structure called a base end station which is a tiny, standalone concrete room built mostly below ground which can accommodate two soldiers. Each has an

above ground viewing port. The first set of six were built on Fort MacArthur. In the following decade three more sets of six were built further and further away from Fort MacArthur to improve targeting accuracy. The last set of six was built southeast of the RPV City Hall site in the mid to late 1920s on the hillside overlooking Palos Verdes Drive South and the Terranea Resort. All six of these still exist. Prior to World War II, the U.S. Army had developed a plan for upgrading coastal fortifications to keep pace with improvements in enemy naval weaponry and ship protection. When the war began, the implementation of this plan became urgent. One of these planned fortifications was a concrete battery, known as Battery 240 or Battery Barnes, designed to accommodate two 6” guns. It

was built just west of the current City Hall building. This battery provided protection for most personnel, shells, powder, the target plotting room, a room for communicating with newly constructed look-out positions and diesel generators which provided a self-contained power source. The battery and one of its two concrete gun emplacements remain. Finally, during WWII, it was already becoming clear that the day when the threat from battleships was disappearing, and was to be replaced by airborne attacks from manned bombers. So in the early 1940s work began on development of America’s first ground-to-air missile. In 1954 the Army began deployment of the first of this family of missiles, called Nike, around major metropolitan areas and other areas of military significance. The Los Angeles area was surrounded by 16 sites each with numbers of these missiles. The first generation of the Nike missile, called the Ajax, had a small conventional warhead which could destroy a single enemy bomber when the aircraft was no further than about 25-30 miles away. A few years later some of these sites were upgraded to the newer Nike Her-

cules missile, with a range of up to 90 miles, which could host a small nuclear warhead, and usually did. Because a nuclear weapon was more effective, fewer sites were needed and about half of the original sites were retired. One of the sites which hosted the Hercules was designated LA-55. LA-55L, the launch facility for this site, was located in what is now the RPV city yard. It is probably the most complete remaining Nike launch site in the Los Angeles area. A walk around the area reveals the original guard house, missile assembly building, diesel generator building, electrical substation and the tops (roofs) of the underground magazines used for storing the missiles, fuel and warheads. To launch a missile, it would have been raised by elevator from the magazine to the surface, wheeled over to a launcher, now long gone, and then fueled. As the threat from bombers gave way to the ballistic missile threat, the entire Nike program lost its value to national defense and was closed down in 1974 and the property on which LA-55L was located was turned over to the new city of Rancho Palos Verdes.

SERVICE TO CLIENTS & COMMUNITY SINCE 1980

Meet Stella Leo and Juliet Leo, who is 11 years old. And then there’s our lovely Jessica Rabbit, affectionately called Jessie. Jessie is a Lionhead rabbit, and she’s a sprightly 7 years old.

How did Jessie become a part of your family? We welcomed Jessie into our lives during Easter when Juliet was just 3 years old. It was love at first sight when we laid eyes on this tiny fluff ball. We were drawn to the idea of having a pet that could be litter trained like a cat, and rabbits seemed like the perfect fit for our family’s lifestyle. While we might consider becoming dog owners in the future, for now, Jessie fills our lives perfectly. What are some of Jessie’s remarkable abilities? Jessie is quite the clever bunny! She responds to commands (well, mostly) and even understands several words like “treat,” “home,” “crunchy” (her favorite breakfast), and “salad.” When we take her out on a leash in public, she immediately becomes the center of attention. Many people have never seen a Lionhead rabbit before, so they’re often confused about whether she’s a dog, a cat, or something else entirely. In fact, we once convinced TSA that she was a cat when we flew cross-country because the airline didn’t allow rabbits. She’s a sweet bunny who adores cuddles and massages. What’s Jessie’s favorite pastime? Jessie loves to be the life of the party! Her favorite activity is helping host our annual Easter egg hunt with all of Juliet’s friends at our place. She’s quite the social bunny! And if you ever spot her out and about, don’t hesitate to say hello! You can also keep up with her adventures on Instagram @jessienjuliet.

Things to know before getting a Bunny: • Vaccinating for Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease is essential. This highly infectious virus causes pet rabbits to become deathly ill overnight, suddenly... and with no warning signs, the rabbit dies. • Strongly consider adopting instead of buying. Many bunnies at rescues are former pets purchased as babies that were taken from their mother’s too young because people will pay more for cute and little. Many of these bunnies get sick and turned over to a rescue for urgent and expensive care. For more information about rabbit care: rabbit.org or to volunteer or adopt a bunny you can contact Linda from Too Many Bunnies (714) 264-4241 Stella and Juliet Leo with Jessica Rabbit
