Issue No. 49
Welcome to the June 2024 issue of Palos Verdes Magazine! As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter (hoping June gloom is behind us), our beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula comes alive with the vibrant spirit of summer, the excitement of travel, and the milestones upon us. This month, we are excited to delve into the rich equestrian history and culture that have shaped the Palos Verdes Peninsula into the unique and charming community we cherish today. Equestrianism is more than just a pastime here; it’s a tradition woven into the fabric of our local heritage. From the serene trails that wind through our scenic landscapes to the stables that call Palos Verdes home, horses have been an integral part of our community for generations. In this issue, we celebrate this legacy, exploring the stories and enduring traditions that continue to make our community a haven for horse lovers. June also marks a significant milestone for many families in our community as we celebrate the Class of 2024 graduates. To all the students graduating from our local schools—elementary, middle, and high schools—congratulations on your incredible achievements! Your hard work and dedication have brought you to this moment, and we are all immensely proud of you. As you embark on your next adventure, know that the entire Palos Verdes community is cheering you on and excited to see the remarkable things you will accomplish moving forward. This year’s graduation season was particularly nostalgic for me as my son, who is a senior, participated in the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District’s first-ever Parade of Graduates at the elementary schools. Visiting Montemalaga Elementary, where it all began, was a heartwarming experience. Walking through those familiar halls, revisiting the kindergarten classroom, and seeing the awe and inspiration in the eyes of the younger students reminded us all of the beautiful journey of education. It was a day filled with joy, reflection, and a sense of continuity as the graduates became role models for the next generation. As we embrace the warmth and excitement of summer, let us also take a moment to appreciate the deep-rooted traditions that make our community such a special place to live. Thank you for being a part of our journey, and we hope you enjoy this issue! Palos Verdes Peninsula’s Equestrian Lifestyle By Monique Sugimoto and Dennis Piotrowski |Originally published in the 2015 Palos Verdes Peninsula News “Our Town” Issue
The equine lifestyle and culture is very much a part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and has been for at least the last century. From a work animal for ranchers and farmers in the late 1800s to their recreational use today, horses are an ever-present part of our community. The first riding academy on the Peninsula was developed in 1925 at the site of the current Palos Verdes Stables. With stables, a half mile riding track and jumping fields, the Academy provided horsemanship training and prepared riders for the show ring. In just twenty years, Sportologue, the horse authority magazine of the time, called the Academy “one of the best in all of Southern California.” Fourteen miles of bridle trails were part of the original Palos Verdes Project. With the popularity of horseback riding, however, the Project increased the length of the trails -- extending some to the ocean and others along paths away from the main roads. The area soon drew riders from Pasadena, Hollywood and Los Angeles “to enjoy the novelty of horseback riding near the sea shore.” The Great Depression of the 1930s may have slowed development of the Peninsula, but not the equestrian lifestyle. The Rolling Hills Hunt Club which started in 1937 held “drag hunts” in which colorfully-attired riders accompanied by Englishbred hounds chased a scent that had been laid over open fields. Other clubs have also flourished on the Peninsula. Clubs ranging from the promotion of proper horsemanship, maintaining riding trails, and
managing horses and their equipment, to clubs for competition and the simple pleasure of trailriding - there is something for everyone. In the 1950s, the Palos Verdes Stables, one of the longest running stables on the Peninsula, hosted hayrides which ended up on the beach with a “wiene bake” and watermelon. Long time Palos Verdes Estates resident Nancy Bolton recalls riding “Patty Cake” to Malaga Cove and tying her up at the Malaga Cove Hitching Post while she visited the Plaza. With the explosive growth of the Peninsula after World War II, much of the prime horse-riding area was threatened by residential development. So strong was the horse culture, the cities of Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates incorporated in 1957 to preserve their horse lifestyles. Over the years, housing, streets and shopping centers have become prominent features of the Peninsula’s landscape. But the horses and their riders we see along PV Drive North and the busy Crenshaw and Hawthorne intersections, remind us that the Peninsula’s equestrian culture is still alive and thriving. Dennis Piotrowski and Monique Sugimoto are Adult Services Librarians at the Palos Verdes Library District. Article brought to you from the Palos Verdes Library District, Local History Center. From Sawdust to Saddle, Meet Cowboy Contractor
Tim Zigrang Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n
Tim Zigrang is a man of many hats, quite literally. Hailing from the picturesque hills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula he seamlessly embodies the roles of both a seasoned cowboy and a skilled general contractor Tim’s journey through life weaves together the rugged essence of the cowboy lifestyle with the precision and artistry of custom home construction. Zigrang didn’t fully embrace the cowboy life until he was an adult but reminds us that Palos Verdes is steeped in equestrian culture. “If you go back to PV in the old days, it was a big ranch community,” he reminisces, reflecting on the rich equestrian heritage of his hometown. Indeed, Palos Verdes boasts a long-standing tradition of horseback riding, with meticulously maintained trails crisscrossing the landscape, inviting riders to explore its natural beauty. Zigrang’s passion for horses burned slowly. Growing up he found himself drawn back to the saddle time and time again. “Around 18 or 19, I spent a summer in Colorado as a wrangler,” he recalls, recounting his formative experiences as a

young cowboy. “I learned how to ride, thrust into it, and I loved it.” However, it wasn’t until later in life, when he took his own family on vacation to a Wyoming dude ranch, that he truly immersed himself in the world of roping. “It was a great family experience,” the father of three grown daughters reflects fondly. “We went back for 10 years in a row.” It was during these vacations that he forged lasting friendships with fellow ropers, igniting a passion for the sport that would come to define much of his adult life. Back in Palos Verdes, Zigrang found himself drawn to the Empty Saddle Club, a bastion of western culture amidst the Los Angeles suburban landscape. Founded in the late 1930s, the club serves as a sanctuary for those who share his love for the cowboy way of life. “We call ourselves a cattle club,” he explains with a hint of pride. “We try to preserve our western way of life. We have 120 horses and cattle.” Zigrang’s journey into the world of roping has been nothing short of exhilarating. What started as a casual interest quickly evolved into a full-blown

passion, propelling him into the competitive arena of rodeos and team roping events. “It took some time but within a year I started to compete,” he recalls, reflecting on his early foray into the sport. “Anyone can do it. I’ve seen them from ages 8 to 80-year-olds.” Zigrang has steadily climbed the ranks, eventually finding himself roping in prestigious events such as the World Series Finale of Roping in Las Vegas. One particular year, out of 350 teams, Zigrang and his partner secured an impressive 11th place, earning $20,000 in prize money. “I’ve won 7 or 8 World Series Ropings,” he adds, underscoring his prowess in the sport. His success even took him across the pond, where he clinched the European Championship in team roping. At the heart of roping lies team roping, the most popular event in recreational rodeos. This thrilling sport, where two riders work in tandem to capture a steer by its head and feet, traces its roots back to the practicalities of ranch life. “It came out of necessity of what you do on the ranch,” Zigrang explains. Despite his achievements on the rodeo circuit, Zigrang remains grounded in his roots, regularly practicing at the Empty Saddle Club alongside fellow enthusiasts. “We practice four days a week,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of honing his skills and staying connected to the cowboy heritage. Zigrang’s dedication to his craft extends beyond the arena and into the world of custom home construction. As the founder of Zigrang Construction, Inc., he has spent over 33 years building a reputation for excellence in the South Bay area. “Our homes really are true pieces of art,” he remarks proudly. “They will endure for many lifetimes. It’s all about the detail and we pay very close attention to detail. So close, every customer becomes a family friend,” Zigrang shares. In both his personal and professional life, he adheres to the principles of what he calls the cowboy way; integrity, hard work, and mutual respect. “You give your word, you keep it. You treat people the way you want to be treated,” he says simply. “And they do the same. That attitude and mindset changed the way I do business. It’s more fun and less stressful,” he laughs. As he looks to the future, Zigrang shows no signs of slowing down. Whether he’s astride his horse at the Empty Saddle Club, at one of his homes in Texas or Palos Verdes, or overseeing a construction site, he approaches each day with the same unwavering commitment and passion. “As long as I can keep doing it, I’ll keep doing it,” he declares.

LOMITA FEED STORE Preserving Tradition while Embracing Innovation Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n
The vibrant hills, rich equestrian heritage, ocean culture and serene outdoor lifestyle of Palos Verdes and the South Bay are integral to the region’s character. These elements are seamlessly interwoven, thanks in large part to the essential services and longstanding support provided by the venerable Lomita Feed Store. Standing as a beacon of heritage and community for over a century Lomita Feed offers everything from a comprehensive range of feed and tack for regular and exotic animals and livestock to a curated selection of farm and garden supplies, the store serves as a one-stop destination for all things agricultural. Serving a wide array of customers from small pet owners to ranchers, the store offers a full range of supplies for both exotic and regular animals. From hay, grains, and supplements to pet supplies, tack, and garden tools, Lomita Feed has it all and more is coming. Founded by the Sikes family and later cherished by the Gibson family, this storied establishment passed into the hands of the Lockwood family in 2019, only the third owners in more than 100 years, ushering in a new era of dedication and innovation under the stewardship of Bill Lockwood. “We have been busy. We are doing some remodeling and opening up the old store front. We are adding some fashion and tack and art. I’m looking forward to creating a rotating art gallery, a space to showcase local artists. Our mural is the first of its kind in the city and we brought back the sale of chicks which has been very popular,” says Lockwood. For Lockwood, the acquisition of Lomita Feed represents a lifelong dream rooted in his family’s legacy. Growing up in Palos Verdes as a lifelong surfer amidst the scenic landscapes of the Peninsula, Lockwood’s passion for nurturing animals was kindled by his sister’s affinity for horses. “There is a unique fusion in this area between the ocean and horses. It’s something you won’t find in the larger world. Both surfing and horseback riding are iconic, solitary endeavors. You can do both in groups, and they both have that edgy feel, like cowboys and surfers,” Lockwood says when talking about his vision for Lomita Feed. “My goal is to highlight the many commonalities between these worlds and bring them together.”
Under Lockwood’s leadership, Lomita Feed has undergone a remarkable transformation, embracing new avenues to engage with the community and celebrate its heritage. One notable addition is the striking mural adorning the store’s facade, a masterpiece crafted by renowned artist John Van Hamersveld, the creator of the iconic Endless Summer poster, Lockwood’s friend and a fellow Palos Verdes surfer. “Paying homage to the Western and English equestrian traditions, the mural serves as a testament to Lomita Feed’s enduring legacy and its role in shaping the cultural tapestry of the region. It’s a triptych so there is more coming and it’s the first mural in Lomita,” he explains. For over 100 years, Lomita Feed Store has been more than just a place to buy feed and tack; it has been a vital part of the South Bay community fabric and with Lockwood at the helm it’s poised to endure for at least another century. “Getting up early to surf, and then when the wind picks up, going for a ride. Now that sounds like a good day,” he says, satisfied.

Portuguese Bend National Horse Show Announces
2024 ART Contest Winners
The Portuguese Bend National Horse Show is presented annually by Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital (PCCH). The committee has a tradition of holding an artwork contest with the winning art being used for different forms of publicity for the show, which raises money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. From 1983-1986, Pat Dispenziere created artwork for the show as a special favor, but the committee ultimately decided to hold an annual artwork contest. After local high schools participated for 10 years, the contest moved to the Palos Verdes Art Center in 2018. 2024 saw 30 submissions! The committee is grateful to participating, enthusiastic artists and looks forward to many more successful contests. The 66th annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show will take place Friday, September 6 through Sunday September 8, 2024 at Ernie Howlett Park.

Eid Celebration in Lunada Bay
Palos Verdes Mosaic is a new non-profit organization celebrating diversity and inclusion on the peninsula. On April 27th, 2024 PV Mosaic hosted their first ever Eid Celebration in Lunada Bay. Eid is a special holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. During this month, Muslims around the world abstain from food and water from sun rise to sun down. It is a spiritually enriching month, and once the month is over Muslims celebrate Eid-al-Fitr. The goal of PV Mosaic is to help engage the local community. This first Eid event involved a lot of family fun including crafting, henna, a bubble house, and a children’s book reading. We had a local author, Natasha Khan Kazi read Moon’s Ramadan. A book that illustrates how people all around the world celebrate Ramadan. Palos Verdes Mosaic looks forward to hosting this event annually!

Aidan Shen Reflects on His Experience Writing for PV Magazine
Before writing for the PV Magazine, baseball was my life. For over a decade I dedicated all of my time to the sport, going to practice after school and playing games on the weekends. Once my junior year of high school came, I realized that my love for Aidan reports on Summer Things To Do for PV Teens as he is pictured at car the sport was wavershow with YouTuber Shmee150 ing. I had just come back from a summer program in Boston where I studied journalism and when I returned to Palos Verdes, I searched for a place to put my new interest to work. Thanks to her generosity and because she saw my passion for writing, Mrs. Borden decided to give me a chance to write for her. When I first started out, a future in journalism did not seem like a long-term path that I wanted to take. It was more about staying busy and connected to the area, just seeing if it was something I might want to pursue. I was assigned article after article, making one submission a month with different assignments around the community where I interviewed different individuals and learned in depth about the topics I was reporting on. As I delved deeper into the writing that I was doing, I found that the sense of purpose that I had lost when I quit baseball, had come back and it became my main focus to improve as a journalist. From making movie reviews to visiting local car shows, I gained new work experiences that I had not expected to get from being a “junior contributor.” As someone who spent a small time working in hospitality as a barista, I thought I had seen it all when it came to work experience at my age. But Palos Verdes Magazine feels like a new job every day, with the vast variety of topics to write about in the area. Every assignment intrigues me, and I am always excited to venture out into the community to report. I have now been writing under the magazine for over a year now and am nearing the end of my high school career. Working here has not only helped me get into college with the experiences that it has given me, but it has also prepared me, workwise and for the busy life in general. I hope to encourage other young students and members of the community to branch out and try different things because like me, they may find an unexpected interest in journalism or another passion that they feel a calling towards. As I move forward, I plan to carry the knowledge that I have gained on to Boston University where my passion for writing first started.

Parades were held at all ten elementary schools. Our 2024 Seniors revisited their elementary schools, where they were warmly cheered on by their former teachers and the current students. It was a heartfelt day filled with joy and nostalgia, as younger students made signs and watched with excitement as the older kids paraded through the halls of their alma mater. A Golfer’s Journey through Family, Achievement, and Community at Palos Verdes Golf Club Written by M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n
Amidst the lush landscape of Palos Verdes stands the venerable Palos Verdes Golf Club, a bastion of tradition and companionability for golf aficionados. As the PVGC celebrates a momentous anniversary this year it continues to be more than just a beautiful golf course. It’s a cherished sanctuary where friendships flourish and memories are etched in the fabric of time. In the vibrant universe of the PVGC, the name Karen Mabli resonates deeply. As a golfer and a cherished member of this esteemed club, Mabli’s life story intertwines seamlessly with the rich legacy of camaraderie, competition, and cherished memories that define the PVGC. Karen Mabli is a woman whose passion for golf and unwavering dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the sport and the community she holds dear. “It’s a big anniversary year for Palos Verdes Golf Club, celebrating its 100th year,” Mabli shares with a smile, her eyes sparkling with pride. “And it’s truly an honor to be part of such a milestone celebration.” As the conversation unfolds, Mabli’s journey into the world of golf emerges as a tale of familial love and unwavering determination. “I was very fortunate,” she reflects, her voice tinged with nostalgia. “My parents were avid golfers, and it was at Glendora Country Club where my love affair with golf began at the tender age of nine.” From those early days on the greens of Glendora Country Club, Mabli’s passion for golf blossomed, fueled by the unwavering support of her family. “When competing in National Golf Championships my husband, my biggest fan, became my caddy,” she reminisces fondly. “Together, we embarked on a journey filled with laughter, camaraderie, and countless rounds of golf.” Mabli’s journey took her to Palos Verdes Golf Club, where she found not only a golfing haven but also a second home. “Jim Gormley, the head pro at the time, encouraged me to join PVGC,” she recounts with a smile. “It was the best decision I ever made, besides marrying my husband.” Amidst the backdrop of Palos Verdes Golf Club’s lush fairways and breathtaking vistas, Mabli’s golfing prowess shone brightly. With numerous tournament victories and club championships to her name, she carved out a place
for herself as one of the club’s most esteemed members. “I don’t like talking about myself,” Mabli humbly admits. “But golf has given me a sense of self-confidence and a lifetime of cherished memories.” Beyond the accolades and triumphs, Mabli’s journey is a testament to the profound impact of family and community. “Golf gave us a common bond,” she reflects, her voice filled with warmth. “My parents, my husband, and my brother, we were always together, sharing in the joy of the game.” As Palos Verdes Golf Club celebrates its centennial milestone, Mabli remains a steadfast pillar of the community, her unwavering dedication and infectious enthusiasm inspiring fellow members and newcomers alike. “This club is like a family,” she muses, her eyes alight with emotion. “A home away from home, where every round of golf is a celebration of friendship and camaraderie.” In the midst of life’s challenges and triumphs, Mabli’s love for golf endures, a beacon of hope and resilience in an ever-changing world. “Golf taught me more than just how to swing a club,” she reflects. “It taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of friendship, and the beauty of finding peace amidst the greens.” Mabli’s words linger in the air, a poignant reminder of the enduring power of sport, community, and the human spirit. In the heart of Palos Verdes Golf Club, amidst the echoes of laughter and the gentle rustle of the wind, Karen Mabli’s legacy is a testament to the timeless bonds of family, achievement, and unbreakable ties.
