Editor’s Letter Hello Palos Verdes!
Hope everyone is enjoying time with family and getting into the holiday spirit! The holidays are quickly approaching and on cool foggy PV mornings it almost actually seems like fall. Truth be told, though, on most days, by afternoon, the sun comes out, the views are back and the beach starts calling. We are so lucky to have weather that allows us to be outside and enjoy our beautiful peninsula year round. The colorful fall sunsets remind me daily that we really do live in paradise. What a great month it has been! Lots of fun events are happening around town and we have been all over the place shooting photos of our community back in action. Fundraisers, parties and performances are all in full swing. Make sure to post your event for free to our community calendar! Also, if you are looking for something to do, we’ve got things to do for all ages. If you have an event coming up and want us to cover it, send us an email. info@palosverdesmagazine.com. This is a very special issue. We sat down with Mrs. Jennifer Hennessey as we wanted to learn more about the whole family. She is a dynamo and does it all! While I was talking to her on the phone she told me to hold on as she was taking her “famous coffee can pumpkin bread” out of the oven. I immediately started to miss my own mom and could already picture this warm family spending their holidays together. I hope you enjoy the story. We also met the incredible Chadwick student, Audrey Lin, who thoughtfully curated an art show to raise awareness of hate crimes against Asian Americans, pretty powerful stuff. We also have some other talented teens featured as well as a fun Around Town section packed with event coverage and things happening in the community. We always welcome your ideas and any local business support for the magazine! Palos Verdes, The Great Peninsula book has finally arrived and we can’t wait to share it with you and let you know how you can get your signed copy! Celebrating a Life Rooted in Love and Laughter Wri tte n by M e l a n i e M o ro s e Ed e l s te i n | P h o to g ra p hy by E ri k J ay
The measure of a successful mogul is not only their next acquisition but it is often the love and support of their partner that drives them to achievement. Never has that been more true than in the case of longtime Palos Verdes residents Jennifer and Paul Hennessey. Playing the lead role in the epic drama known as The Hennessey Family, matriarch Jennnifer Hennessey gives herself credit for making her 50 year marriage to her restaurateur husband Paul, the thrilling ride that it is. When asked what the secret to maintaining such a long and loving relationship is, Jennifer quickly responds with an easy laugh, “it’s me”. A mother, wife, partner, philanthropist, friend, traveler and voracious reader, Jennifer Hennessey is loving every minute of her seventh decade. The hard work she has put into her family over the years is evident in the smiles and closeness of this impressive extended family. “We are nowhere near retired. We just constantly have so much fun. We’ve got such a great family. It is because of perseverance. I’ve always tried to be the glue that kept

this entire three ring circus together. I’ve realized that I am a very strong woman,” she says with a radiant, confident smile. Jennifer Hennessy says family life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula is idyllic. Today, the Hennessey family is reaping the rewards of a lifetime of hard work. Laughter, honesty and a caustic sense of humor are cornerstones to the couple’s happiness and prosperity. “We were always able to really feed off each other,” Jennifer jokes. “You know, it really is a woven tapestry that we put together. And it’s strong because both of our roles are equally important.” The couple’s lasting love is in part because they have had faith in each other since the beginning. “I was always going to allow him to follow what he needed to do in order to be successful. I wanted a family, that was more important than anything. I felt from the beginning that he was going to do something amazing, something big. I didn’t know what it was but I knew. He was just somebody that was going to do something special.”

“ We were always able to really feed off each other. You know, it really is a woven tapestry that we put together. And it’s strong because both of our roles are equally important.” —Jennifer Hennessey
COMING TO CALIFORNIA “It began when we met on a commuter train coming out of New York City and I was 21 years old. We decided we wanted to set forth on an adventure and quickly we were traveling across the country in a pup tent. We came out to California. We just didn’t know what we didn’t know but it was the best time of our lives,” Jennifer remembers. “We went to San Francisco. I got into retail and he got into the restaurant business. As a busboy. We didn’t have any money and we were really lucky that we didn’t kill each other because we didn’t really know each other. Can you imagine?” she beams. The Hennesseys have always trusted their instincts and each other. They admittedly built their hugely successful life on a wing and a prayer. “Me being the practical person and him having a strong entrepreneurial spirit, there’s the balance, and that’s what works.” BUILDING A LIFE AND STAYING TOGETHER This couple has a fun and exciting life that was built with intention and love.We were very interested to know how they have managed to stay together in an industry that touts one of the highest divorce rates. Work life balance is hard for anyone but starting at the bottom in the restaurant and bar business and building it into a total of 16 restaurants in different cities adds significantly more stressors on a marriage and family dynamic. We asked Jennifer about this and she told us, “There are a few words that I feel are really important to describe what we have. Leniency is one of them. I gave him understanding and the allowance to put the time in he needed to achieve his goals, probably more than most women would, but it was my choice to do it. Because I know that that’s what he needed to do. Also, you know, you have to be tolerant, but you also have to be accepting of what you
give out. I knew that giving him all this leniency to work as many hours as he was, that he needed to do that in order for us both to fulfill our dreams of having a successful marriage and a successful family. That’s what we needed to do. And we had to do it because neither one was more important than the other. That was the nice thing. What I did was just as important as what he was doing. And he saw it that way too.” The couple’s restaurant empire is vast and includes sixteen restaurants that expand from Manhattan Beach to San Diego to Las Vegas. In an industry where more than two-thirds of the new entrants fail within the first year, the Hennesseys have demonstrated atypical longevity and prosperity. Their South Bay locations include Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach Hennessey’s Taverns, The Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa, HT Grill Redondo and Rebel Republic Social House in Redondo. “We opened our first restaurant in 1976, the very first Hennesseys. Our daughter Erin was a toddler and I worked at that restaurant for a short time and stopped because I wanted to be home with the kids,” she says. Jennifer and Paul boast a beautiful gaggle of three grown girls and a bevy of six grandchildren. Daughters Erin, Devon and Shannon and grandchildren Aidan, Brendan, Ryan, Brody, Grayson and Ledger continue to bring their couple immeasurable joy every day, as does life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

“We just love it. It wasn’t until the third restaurant that we were able to afford to move to the Peninsula but it was worth the wait,” says Jennifer. That was the beginning of their life in PV and neither one of them have looked back. “I love Palos Verdes and I love the people in Palos Verdes.” Their first home was in Rolling Hills Estates near Dapplegray Lane followed by a home in Rolling Hills behind the gates where they lived for 25 years and raised their three girls. Paul remembers those early PV days as some of the very best. “We moved to Palos Verdes and it was perfect. Best decision,” he says. “We moved to raise the kids there and they are like so many of the kids that grew up here. They’re kind of filtering back because it’s five minutes to the beach. It’s beautiful and it’s just a great place,” Hennessey says nostalgically. “ We raised the kids in Rolling Hills. Dogs are running around, kids are running around. It’s so great. It’s so gorgeous you could be in Europe. There are peacocks, horses and in minutes you’re at the beach it’s spectacular. Honestly, it’s one of the most gorgeous places in the world.” In 2007 the Hennessey’s left Rolling Hills and built a home in Lunada Bay which they eventually sold before moving into what Jennifer tells us is her “dream home”. Honestly, I fell in love with the Peninsula early on. Its people, its education system, everything. But the Queen’s Necklace view was something that I always wanted, and I finally got it,” she says delightedly, before explaining that this is the last move. Her final house. She also gratefully acknowledges that all of these homes are a direct result of the couples hard work and determination as a family. “You have to be strong and stay strong, committed to fighting for things like marriage and family.” Although Paul is the well known entrepreneur, Jennifer also has an innovative spirit. From 1989 to 1997 Jennifer owned a store in Riviera Village called, After Dinner andshe came up with
the unique concept for it. “After Dinner featured things you would do after dinner”, she tells us, “We had it all. I used to say,’ from truffles to telescopes’!” Philanthropy has been interwoven and invariably a huge part of her many years living on the Peninsula. “The girls were introduced to it early, many charities and philanthropies through the years. I really believe it’s the best education. They all learned so much from volunteering. All three of them learned how to do so many invaluable things from their volunteering.” Jennifer says. In the years since, the Hennesseys have continued to nurture and stay committed to their home life. Life isn’t always perfect but it seems Jennifer’s strength and strong will is the glue that holds this family together. All of the Hennessey’s daughters live have moved back to the Peninsula and Jennifer also tells us that two of their grandsons, Aidan and Brendan both work at Hennesseys. It is a tight group and she runs a tight ship. As the Hennessey family gets ready for a big family Christmas and all the hoopla that comes along with the holidays, she tells us, “It is amazing. I mean we are so lucky. We go on vacations and we all love to travel. We take the kids everywhere. (They’ve taken the extended family to Puerto Vallarta, Disney Cruise three times and Hawaii for many years for Thanksgiving.) We are just really close. Very close. We love being together. So we just pick up as a group and we get along really well. It’s loud. We are a loud bunch and it’s just such a great time to talk, and laugh and just enjoy each other,” she says. “I mean look where we are today. Look where we came from. I am really proud.” Celebrating the magic of family and a life rooted in love and laughter and the hills of Palos Verdes, the Hennessey family legacy lives on.

Meg Walker is stoked about her Palos Verdes life these days. With 18 month old Sloane and her three year old sister Eve happily situated at the family’s Palos Verdes Estates home and and her recent acquisition of the coveted location La Venta Inn and being awarded as the Exclusive Manager and Caterer of Events there. Chef Meg is engaged, active and committed to what she calls this exciting, amazing journey in making the world and the Peninsula a happier, better place. While cooking up the reinvention of the newly reopened historic La Venta Inn in Palos Verdes Estates, Walker is conscious of the legacy she is inheriting and is thankful to call the Peninsula home. “We moved up here a few years ago and we really love it. We love the home. We love the community. It’s not just our community, we know. La Venta is not just a business, it’s a very big part of this whole Palos Verdes community and we respect that. We bring everyone in and we are gracious. That’s our philosophy at La Venta. It’s in the Peninsula’s blood and this, we realize, is a huge honor. We are just grateful to be part of this community,” says Walker, whose husband Anthony Walker is in the real estate business. As owner of the highly esteemed Made by Meg Catering Company, based in Redondo Beach, Walker says she’s always loved sharing food, bringing people together and creating happiness. As a teenager she would often cook for her entire family. She developed her prowess in the kitchen through a lifelong love affair with cooking. She began her career brewing up deals in the world of finance, but it wasn’t her calling. While working for Smith Barney, Walker refined her skills in the kitchen at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. She worked in restaurants all around Los Angeles and eventually began cooking on her own. When a friend asked her to cater an event for a large corporation it was such a success the jobs just kept on coming and Made by Meg Catering was born. “I started my business in 2007 and at that time all I knew was that I had nowhere to cater. I realized I needed to find a place to cater and it hasn’t been easy. I researched and researched. The landlord information is concealed so just locating that took some effort. It’s been an arduous process,” she says of her journey to becoming the Exclusive Manager and Caterer of Events at La Venta. November 2021 | PVMagazine | 15

Audrey Lin
15-year old Chadwick Student takes the future into her own hands by hosting an art show to unify the Asian and greater Los Angeles community
“ I love art because it universally unites us through human emotion,” said Audrey Lin. Driven by the past year’s increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Audrey Lin, a 15-year-old Chadwick student helps unify the Los Angeles community by celebrating the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) people and cultures through the power of art. In late September, Audrey along with Chadwick School hosted a weeklong art show to help break up stereotypes in the Asian culture and raise awareness about the hate crimes against AAPI. The show focused on how the AAPI community has contributed to society. It featured pieces from Audrey and artists from the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes and the local community. Local artists could submit pieces across any medium depicting AAPI historical contributions, music, food, famous figures, gaming, or a personal reflection of the recent hate crimes. Multi-talented teen finds balance in school, music, sports and community Wri tte n by Me l a n i Mo ro s e Ed e l s te i n
The communities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula breed world class achievers, boast outstanding schools and generous philanthropies. Our neighborhoods are made up of phenomenal people of all ages and Skylor Sun exemplifies the best of them. Born and raised on the hill, Skylor earned his third degree taekwondo black belt at age 10, and his fourth degree black belt at age 16. He’s also an avid club and high school soccer player who maintains a 4.95 GPA and membership in several honor societies. “I think academically, my parents really drive me. Both are extremely successful and I want to be at least somewhat close to what they are and what their standards are. Sports wise, it’s my coach, my soccer coach is really really inspirational. He drives me to be a better person overall, and a great soccer player,” Skylor explains. His talents extend far beyond the classroom or the athletic field. Skylor has proven a genuine interest in making an impact on his community through his extraordinary community service work. He earned the Gold Medal Congressional Award, which recognizes initiative service and achievement in American youth and over the last five years he’s earned a total of six consecutive gold and one silver President’s Volunteer Service Awards by volunteering over 100 hours, each year, for different non-profits. So, when the pandemic struck and Skylor found time on his hands he had an epiphany. “My neighbor is an old lady. She’s 93 and has always done so much for our family and I just wanted to help her. She was afraid to go out during the pandemic, to get groceries and other things. So I volunteered to help. I’d drive out to Trader Joe’s every weekend, every Sunday to buy her some groceries,” he says easily. “It just really made me feel special,
like, I feel honored that I was able to help. I was the one able to do it. I really enjoy helping others, I do. I honestly have a drive to help others, no matter what.” Skylor’s devotion to the Palos Verdes community comes from his heart. Realizing the loneliness many senior citizens endured during the pandemic, Skylor founded the nonprofit Music for Seniors, by reaching out to local senior homes and offering free live classical music performances. “I play with the Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra. It’s a volunteer orchestra where we receive service hours but due to COVID and the pandemic we were not able to meet or have performances. So I came up with the idea that these students and young violinists and young musicians, they’re unable to perform and get that experience that they used to have, of performing in front of a crowd and all that. So I decided to create a little organization, a nonprofit organization for these young musicians to perform in senior homes. I contacted many senior homes. Many were interested but especially Merrill Gardens. They were open to having us perform once a month. So we play every Saturday and it’s been great,” he humbly admits and there is no doubt he will continue long into the future with the same spirit and acumen that has served him well so far. “The Congressional Award takes a minimum of two years so I signed up at thirteen and a half and received the award. It was important to me. I just kept grinding and reaching my small goals, to try and get it,” he explains. Whether it’s excelling academically or athletically or connecting older adults through live interactive music Skylor Sun is one teenager to keep an eye on and one phenomenal Palos Verdes resident for the whole community to be proud of.

ARTIST
Dallas Ginder
Written by M elani M o ro s e Ed e l s te i n Ph otograph ed by Eri k J ay
12 year old Dallas Ginder is wise beyond her years. The Ridgecrest Intermediate school student and lifelong Palos Verdes resident represents the best of the Peninsula’s young people and inspires creativity all who meet her. Palos Verdes was built on the foundation of supporting the arts and celebrating local artists and we recognize and celebrate Dallas for continuing the longstanding tradition. Her spirited approach to creating artistically beautiful representations of our Peninsula and her kindness in community spirit, sharing her positive vibes wherever she goes, gives her confidence beyond that of your typical middle schooler.
“ Do what makes you happy. Be proud of it. Stand proud and do what you love,” she says. The pandemic was life changing for Ginder. Rather than retreat behind a screen, Ginder set out to explore during the lockdown. She spent hours walking our luscious fields and exploring the Peninsula’s many cool coves and miles of shoreline, trading virtual reality for the real deal and loving every single minute of it. “I go back to the same place more than once because you get different details every time. You get the small details that you may overlook the first time,” she says. Art is no stranger to the Ginder family. Dallas’ grandmother Judy was also rich in artistic talent, becoming a successful and in demand artist and sharing her pride in the Peninsula with her granddaughter which is reflected in the way Dallas’ creations portray our local landmarks and landscapes.
When school’s closed and everyone retreated inside, Dallas headed outside looking for her muse and she found it in the nature that surrounds her. She says there were many days when she found herself walking alone with sketchbook and ink in hand, ready to sit down and create. “When I begin I am in my picture. I am part of it and I work on it so people feel like they are in it too.” When she is not able to go outside and enjoy the elements in person, she studies other kinds of art and photography because she believes changes are inevitable and going with the flow is critical to survival. “Just do what you feel like doing and keep yourself happy. Who cares if you change all of a sudden. If you’re happy, that’s all that matters. Of course you’re going to change at some point,” she explains with conviction, and she wants to be prepared for whatever might be next. Dallas refuses to put boundaries on her exploration of art. She experiments with oil painting, watercolors and sketches because not just in art but in life, you never know what’s around the next corner and preparation and knowledge are powerful. Teaching Gratitude to Kiddos During the Holidays and Beyond Written by L auren D e n n i s - Pe re l m u te r
I have always enjoyed books, quotes and articles written by known thought leaders that remind me to be present and grateful for what I have. Pausing to really observe and think about what makes me grateful has trulyhelped me see what I “have” versus what I “don’t have or miss.” I do this frequently and it really does make me feel better. My mood becomes elevated, my worry scale is minimized and my overall outlook becomes much more confident. But how does this work and why should we teach our children these ever so important values and skills? As noted in Harvard Health Review, August, 2021, “the word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives...they recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves.” In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Well, I am all for that!
Lauren Dennis-Perelmuter Founder and CEO The Art Box Academy Art to Grow On Children’s Art Center, Inc.
So, how do we break this down for your young children to understand? For young children it is a tough concept. Most kiddos are in the moment, and abstract ideas of looking to the future or past can be difficult, but the most impactful gratitude techniques that I used for years with my boys truly have worked!
GRATITUDE LIST We created Gratitude Lists…and it seemed that when the boys wrote things down it seemed to have a larger impact than just chatting about it. Our Gratitude List looked something like this: • I am grateful that Jake could spend the night last night (my son wanted him to spend two nights, but realized one night was pretty good) • I am grateful and happy I could go on a bike ride even though I wanted to go all day with my friends. (6 hours was enough and I could go again tomorrow) The list writing is really endless. You can even do a “I am grateful it is another day!” or “I am grateful the sun is out!” It really becomes like a game and it does change your mindset. You can purchase a little sketchbook or journal, create a special stack of papers that makes it easy to do. Creating a routine, possible at night just for 5 minutes to write a few things down, really does have impact. In addition to the writing of the Gratitude List, of course talk about the simple things to be thankful for like a sunny day or yummy food from the market.
My Gratitude List this season includes a truly thank you to you, our amazing South Bay community, for your incredible support for both Art To Grow On Children’s Art Center and The Art Box Academy, valuing the creative process and participating in our 20+ years of art classes, programs, boxes and more! My second special Gratitude Note is to Kristin and her incredible team at PV Magazine, giving me the opportunity to share my words that hopefully move us all a little forward and upward to ensure our kiddos thrive in our ever changing world. Wishing you all a beautiful holiday season with much gratitude, Lauren For more information: www.theartboxacademy.com • @theartboxacademy 310.625.6028 • Studio Location: The Academy Center, 4010 Palos Verdes Drive North #107, Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274

AROUND TOWN TOAST ON THE COAST PEF Fundraising Event Ph otography by E ri k J ay
On November 6th PV Magazine joined the Peninsula Education Foundation for the Inaugural Toast on The Coast event. This outdoor coastal festival featured live music, food tasting stations, wine, beer and cocktail stations, a special VIP area and private cabanas! All proceeds will benefit our Palos Verdes Public Schools. Many are surprised to learn that the PVPUSD receives less money per student than surrounding school districts(we are nearly last in LA County.) The Peninsula Education Foundation raises funds for all public schools on the Peninsula to ensure important programs that have been cut by the state such as music, P.E., counseling, engineering/technology, teaching positions and student wellness programs continue to enrich the education and lives of our students as they prepare to be our leaders of tomorrow.

GETTING TO KNOW...Glenn Thompson Lifelong Palos Verdes Resident Glenn Thompson Knows Palos Verdes Has It All, and Loves It All
Written by Mela n i Mo ro s e Ed e l s te i n
The pleasures of life in Palos Verdes are nearly impossible to replicate anywhere else and if you believe Glenn Thompson, there is no reason to even try. Thompson, a successful PV realtor, is the ultimate Palos Verdes man about town. Having lived and worked on the Peninsula for more than fifty years he wouldn’t want it any other way. “I grew up here. My kids are all growing up here and I can honestly say that Palos Verdes is an extraordinary place to live because in the course of my lifetime I have lived in all the cities on the hill, Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates and Rolling Hills Estates.” Thompson was educated in the PVPUSD having attended Montemalaga Elementary, Ridgecrest Intermediate and Rolling Hills High school. A former employee of Marineland from the age of 16 until the park closed, a former docent at the Point Vicente lighthouse, a longstanding member of the PV Chamber of Commerce and an eight year PTSA board member at Vista Grande Elementary school Thompson now serves as the president of the Ridgecrest Intermediate school PTSA. “It’s a really good time to be president at Ridgecrest. My 12 year old twins Liam and Sophie attend and so does my older son, Kyle,” says Thompson. “So two sixth graders and an eighth grader. My godchild also goes there, so having all the kids at the same school makes it fun for me.” He says the schools are some of the most considerable benefits of life on the hill. November 2021 | PVMagazine | 40
“The schools are great, the teachers are great. Our backyard is Highridge Park and we visit with friends and play on the field.” Honestly, it seems that Thompson enjoys practically everything about PV. “We have two dogs and I walk them on the trails multiple times a day. The thing is familiarity. On a personal level I can’t go anywhere without knowing someone,” he explains. Along with community, family is everything to him. “My hobbies are my kids,” he says. “My daughter spends a lot of time riding horses and we are at Ernie Howlett Park a lot and my wife is a horseback rider and my sons play baseball.” Along with his wife of 16 years Marla and their kids, Thompson’s parents also loved Palos Verdes. “We lost my father during Covid but he was a retired physician who practiced at Torrance Memorial and my mom was an RN.” Being a top producing Coldwell Banker agent since 2007 and the Coldwell Banker Commercial President’s Achievement of Excellence Award Recipient, Thompson also appreciates being able to work in Palos Verdes. “I can’t imagine a more beautiful or safer place to raise a family. I know the city like it’s the back of my hand.” Glenn Thompson is clearly living his best PV life.

HOME & DESIGN outdoor living
Who in Palos Verdes hasn’t dreamt of an outdoor living space to enjoy with family and friends? Renovating your backyard creates a natural extension of your home by adding a whole new dimension for crowd pleasing entertainment, or simply a space to unwind at the end of the day by the fire. The first step is to divide the yard into the distinct zones you are looking for: cooking, dining, relaxing or sports activities. The large outdoor kitchen island and bar makes firing up the gas grill a breeze. When planning a gourmet outdoor kitchen consider all the components: gas grill, side burner, sink, refrigerator, and bar seating. With ample cooking and prep areas as well as storage space, it’s easy to prepare dinner for two or twenty. Also don’t forget to light each area, provide dimmable task and accent lighting. Seating is the next key item to consider for your outdoor living space. Here a lounging area surrounds a natural stone fire pit. Casual Adirondack chairs wrap around one side for the amazing view, while custom seating surrounds the other. This backyard has now been transformed into the perfect place to relax and enjoy your time with family and friends.
